Polteageist functions as an effective sweeper on hyper offense teams due to a combination of good stats, ability in Cursed Body, and Strength Sap, which allows it to beat most would-be checks and counters. Strength Sap lowers the Attack of Pokemon like Obstagoon and Snorlax to where it is unable to KO Polteageist and provides reliable recovery. The combination of Giga Drain and Strength Sap allows Polteageist to beat Obstagoon, which otherwise walls it. Giga Drain also hits Water-types such as Gastrodon and Haze Milotic while providing an alternate method of recovery. Alternatively, Polteageist can run Stored Power over Giga Drain in order to hit normal-types such as Snorlax and Porygon2 for more damage. White Herb reverses the stat drops from Shell Smash and enables Polteageist to take on Obstagoon. The given Defense EVs let Polteageist survive a -1 Knock Off from Obstagoon from full health if Polteageist has used up White Herb, while 224 Speed EVs allow it to outspeed Choice Scarf Mienshao after one Shell Smash boost.
Polteageist's sweeps can be cut short by status ailments such as poison. Hence, it appreciates Misty Terrain support from the likes of Galarian Weezing, which can also support it with Memento, allowing it to set up on an effected foe. Alternatively, Psychic Terrain from the likes of Indeedee also benefits Polteageist by Increasing the strength of its Stored Power as well as blocking priority moves such as First Impression from Durant and Shadow Sneak from Doublade. Barbaracle synergises well with Polteageist, beating Incineroar in order to let Polteageist sweep. Polteageist also struggles to break through special walls such as Registeel and Umbreon, meaning that Ground- and Fighting-type Pokemon such as Flygon and Cobalion are great teammates for it. Entry hazard support from the likes of Roserade and Necrozma eases Polteageist's ability to sweep through teams. Aurora Veil support from the likes of Alolan Ninetales eases Polteageist's time on the field and allows it to set up safely.
