Congratulations to the Top 8 that made it all the way to Playoffs from the Seasonals, Best of 3, and Ladder tournaments! The Top 8 will now face each other in one final tournament for the coveted PU Ribbon

!

Specific Rules:
  • This is a standard SM PU tournament.
  • This tournament will be a single elimination tournament.
  • All rounds will be best of three.
  • Matches are to be played on Pokemon Showdown!.
  • To encourage the development of the metagame, and so that everyone is on an even playing field, all matches must have replays recorded. If neither player posts replays of the match, regardless of whether you confirm that your opponent won, your series will be coinflipped unless you can provide replays. We will not disqualify both players, but we will coinflip the series, not because we don't believe that you played, but because the replay rule ensures everyone is on an even playing field, as stated. If you wish for your replays to stay hidden, you may PM them to me instead.
  • PU is a usage based tier. Essentially you can use anything that is not in a higher tier; NU effectively serves as the PU banlist. However, there are several Pokemon banned from PU which are not in NU or a higher tier; aka BL4.
Standard Rules and Clauses
  • Species Clause: A player cannot have two Pokemon with the same PokeDex number on his team.
  • Sleep Clause: You cannot inflict sleep upon more than one member of the opposing team.
  • Evasion Clause: The moves Double Team and Minimize are banned.
  • OHKO Clause: The moves Horn Drill, Guillotine, Sheer Cold, and Fissure are banned.
  • Endless Battle Clause: Anything capable of intentionally creating an endless battle is banned.
General Tournament Rules:
  • Identity: I expect many battles to be completed under alts. This can be bad for tournament security, and thus I will make this clear: If I hear any whispers of identity theft (battling as someone you are not) or proxy battling (helping someone else battle through pm) I will not be pleased and I will take severe actions.
  • Scouting: Next, I do not want to hear anything about counterteaming, at all. Do not complain about it. I also don't want to hear about any blatant scouting. There is a difference between "[user] is known for using stall" and "let me follow [user] around all day to watch all his battles since I am his opponent". I expect a lot of the former and none of the latter. I give permission to all battlers to ask any person spectating their battle to leave if they do not want them watching. Everyone will have access to your replays from earlier rounds though.
  • Timer Clause: As for taking long between moves, if your opponent asks you to hurry up, please oblige. If you are doing a damage calc for a key turn that is one thing, but prolonging every move is suspicious and annoying. Don't do it. Furthermore, Battle Timeout is a rule for a reason. If you run out of time, you lose, simple as that. It does not matter what your opponent says. Do not battle if you think you will have to leave mid battle, and instead reschedule for a better time.
  • Disconnections: Finally, in the case of a disconnect, the decision is in the hands of the player who did not disconnect. The options are: redo the battle move for move, redo the battle with the same teams but different moves, or redo the battle with completely different teams. If the battle was without a doubt over, they may also take the win. Any suspicion that a disconnect was committed on purpose to redo a match may be appealed to me, and if I feel this happened there will be severe consequences, don't do it.

ok so this playoffs flew by really fast, here are my predicts

Ktutverde a.k.a. King Ktut a.k.a. The Scientist has been doing absolutely phenomenally over the past year, continually improving both his plays and teambuilding. It's always great to see a new face who comes up with his own unique innovations and teambuilding quirks rather than just following the face of the meta like Ktut is, and this creativity combined with his ability to consistently make bold plays I think will give him a strong chance here. If I were to rate his stats I would give him something like this:

Intelligence- 8 (one hella smart lad, though some of his VR opinions are quite odd)
Discipline- 8 (Ktut has gotten out of a lot of tight situations with careful plays though occasionally he can be a bit trigger-happy)
Creativity- 10 (this goes without saying, just watch his replays)
Experience- 6 (Ktut has played some high-stakes PU games but no doubt much weaker than his opponent)
Intangibles- 8 (He's on an upward trend, there's no doubt about it)

Megazard a.k.a. Meganerd a.k.a. Bippy- surprising to see our esteemed TL got to the finals tbh considering his greatest achievement in pokemon prior to this was inventing Scarf Gabite. Zard man never struck me as a particularly masterful pokemon trainer but I suppose if you got a tamed monkey to play 1000+ games on Showdown it too would eventually become good, and if there's one thing Zard has, it's experience. Anyway, here's how I would rate him:

Intelligence- 8 (big nerd)
Discipline- 9 (man practically defined tryharding before TJ even existed)
Creativity- 5 (he is creative in the same way that tie-dying a shirt is creative)
Experience- 10 (as said before, the guy has probably spent a majority of his life playing PU games)
Intangibles- 8 (I bet he's feeling the Tier Leader plot armor pretty heavy rn)

in conclusion, it's about a 50/50. gl Zard I am rooting for you :]

ktut finally got back to me but wont really be around to schedule until sunday and probably cant play until late next week so yeah, probably gonna need the full week extension. this is... just really silly to take a full week seemingly knowing in advance but without warning, but nobody wants activity in finals so ig we'll be playing late next week. hopefully gonna post an exact time when that gets figured out in a few days.

Well I said on untier talk I didnt care who won as long as it was a good set and I didn't just go out to bad matchups, but I couldn't make that second bit happen, pretty much just stupid hard matchups for 1 and 3 and my incredible g2 matchup ended up getting ridiculously tense after a crit. Props to Ktütverde on his win, the matchup thing is in no way meant to be a slight because that is your biggest strength as a player and has been throughout the entire circuit (plus I brought stall convinced it'd have a good one so who am I to judge). I don't think we've ever seen a player so consistent at bringing super matchup focused and risky teams with such a high success rate, and it is telling how dominant of a strategy this was when pulled off right (seriously did not see sun coming after I used scarf aurorus and stall the last 2 games), and I really hope we see more of this in Exhibition, open, more circuit, etc. I was definitely annoyed in the aftermath because of one miss but like, I still had a huge deficit to crawl out of and I've still gotta just be content with having my best tour performance ever over the last few months between circuit and DPL, even though it just ultimately wasn't good enough. Also s/o to all the people I repeatedly spammed for tests over the last 4 weeks, I've played way too many games vs you guys and you probably need a break just as much as I do.

Idk if I'm supposed to do some speech or whatever.

About my teams:
Team1: entirely based on NP persian, my favourite PU set that I started using a long time ago and still like. Added 3 fighting resists+spikes+spinblock+toxic toge to get rid of fighting types and fairies

Team2: AV throh BO. A team I used a lot vs a friend in test games and was super consistent, although a bit weak to stall. Was healbell lilligant but changed it to HP fire bc i didnt expect MZ to stall vs me, given that almost all my teams handle stall p well. Stone edge lures flying types for lilligant.

team3: Ktut sun. yeah I didnt create sun, but I never saw anyone using a viable sun team so I tried to make one. The original core was Simisear+vic+"normal" stuff, but why not try to make sun competitive and not too much MU based? (simisear handles hail teams and destroys RainDance users).

Otherwise was a really nice circuit, Idt I'm a king of counterteaming as some people say. I just have a bunch of teams ready and choose which ones I will use against X player, but they are all able to beat every playstyle. I hate winning by MU, I just try to build consistent teams that I test and think about a lot. I guess what matters is to just win, although my goal was to win with consistent and unique teams and it's what happened. I basically deleted 80% of the teams I had otherwise I couldnt help but bringing unreliable stuff, and deleted everything that would be too standard bc I wanted this finals to be really fun. I hope you enjoyed the series, grats Megazard for reaching finals too, and for winning the g2, making the series a lot spicier than expected with this unlikely persian sweep late game.

Thanks everyone for making PU a wonderful tier!

SHoutouts to:
yandaud : best friend ever on PS!, I would have stopped playing a long time ago if you weren't here to chat, build and test teams. Thank you so much bro!
Urusius : thanks for coaching me in January and encouraging me to get into PU. With yandaud and you, talking about PU is super fun, thanks fren!
Sam I Yam , Drud , jklioe and Many who regularly supported me and made me believe I could actually win Ssnl and circuit playoffs games
The PU room: J0gurt, Oathkeppre, Slowbroth, Shuckledad, zoowi and everyone who makes the chat alive and fun. i'm going to forget many names so I will stop there.

My last words will be: ALOLAN PERSIAN FOR S RANK (watch the replays for real)
