PU's Matchmaking Thread!

Art drawn by the talented Modeling Clay and coloured by his talented partner. (New art by the legendary clay soon to come!)

Welcome to PU Matchmaking! This thread acts as both a resource and a community project to find the best cores in the PU meta! Thank you in advance to everyone who tags along and is involved.

What is matchmaking?

All Pokemon are unable to function effectively without their checks and counters gone, which is where their teammates come in. These partners are capable of dismantling multiple Pokemon proving a threat to their teammates, providing invaluable support and thus are often seen as the heart of the team. This project aims to brainstorm various ideal and effective partners to various Pokemon that may range from metagame defining Pokemon to more underrated threats.

Every week, I will nominate a Pokemon for discussion of potential partners and submissions. There will be 5 days from the day I nominate a Pokemon for you to submit a partner for that Pokemon! During the next two days, you and the PU community will vote on your favorite partner for said Pokemon. There will be a leaderboard! The winner for the week will receive 2 points and the runner up will receive 1 point and both users' submissions will be archived.

Whoever tops the leaderboard would be declared PU's next Top Cupid!!

PU's Top Cupids:
SM
:luvdisc: keppy :luvdisc:
:luvdisc: gum :luvdisc:

How to matchmake?

You will nominate one Pokemon that would match well with the weeks featured Pokemon. You will explain how and why the Pokemon that you chose is a good partner and what the synergy of the core is.

Please nominate Pokemon that are viable and have used or have knowledge of using. Reservations are allowed as long as they users update the post 24 hours after the reservation has been made. This rule will change if it's not followed.

PU Leader
:bw/sneasel:
cruel world (Sneasel) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Knock Off
- Triple Axel
- Ice Shard

sneasel makes for an incredible partner to roserade for multiple reasons; first, sneasel invites in bulky water-types like vaporeon that roserade can easily pressure and use to set spikes up, which sneasel greatly appreciates to pressure its switchins. in return, sneasel can knock off boots from pokémon like hitmontop, making it easier for roserade to pressure the opposing team with its spikes. it can also take on faster threats like zen headbutt virizion, heliolisk, and archeops roserade struggles against. lastly, they both pressure steel-types for eachother, while roserade's support goes beyond just setting spikes - thanks to sleep powder, it can provide sneasel with setup opportunities.

old meta replay, but this still showcases this core pretty well. here, sneasel was able to effectively wallbreak and clean thanks to roserade's spikes, and pressured sigilyph and guzzlord for roserade. roserade also took advantage of regirock, a pokémon that sneasel invited in freely

:guzzlord: Guzzlord :guzzlord:

So i decided to pair roserade with guzzlord because of its naturally good bulk and how well it pairs with the weakness points of roserade and viceversa. Being inmune to psychic attacks while also resisting fire is amazing. Roserade can be used as an offensive fighting resist which really helps with guzzlord to keep healthy. And overall the damage output this 2 can get togheter is just so good.

Guzzlord @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 76 SpD / 180 Spe
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Heat Crash
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
(this set is meant to be very offensive being able to outspeed no speed on sandslash-A)

Guzzlord @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 160 HP / 36 Atk / 252 SpD / 60 Spe
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Heat Crash
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
(more defensive set, outspeeds the base 50 speed)

Gigalith.

:ss/Gigalith:

So what is Rose weak to again? Flying, Fire, Psychic, Ice.

Funnily enough, Gigalith beats and resists 3 of those types, and there are only 2 mons with those types that can actually break Gigalith (Braviary with Close Combat, although if its locked into Brave Bird it dies 1on1 and it cant switch into Giga; Gallade cuz its Fighting type)

Rocks and Toxic also are really nice for Roserade as chip damage can help Rose get a bunch of OHKOs and kills with its massively high SpAtk stat.

Gigalith @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
- Rock Blast
- Earthquake

P.S thanks gum for the laughing emote but I had schoolwork and preparations for exams so rip

Archeops @ Power Herb
Ability: Defeatist
EVs: 136 Atk / 120 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Meteor Beam
- Acrobatics
- Earth Power / Heat Wave
- Roost

Mixed Archeops is a great partner for Roserade, appreciating its Spikes support to wear down the Pokemon that would normally wall it as well as its ability to threaten bulky Waters like Vaporeon and Lanturn. Roserade in turn likes Archeops' ability to KO both opposing Flying- and Steel-types. Defensively, Archeops doesn't offer much, but it does resist Fire and Flying for Roserade which actually lets it check even max Attack Talonflame and Roost off Brave Bird/Flare Blitz damage. The EV spread allows Archeops to OHKO Silvally-Fairy with Meteor Beam after three layers of Spikes provided by Roserade, as well as guaranteeing a 2HKO on Silvally-Steel with Earth Power even without Spikes and the +1 from Meteor Beam if for some reason you have to switch out after using your Power Herb.

Centiskorch @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Fire Lash
- Knock Off
- Power Whip
- Scorching Sands

This set is an All-Out Attacking set, with the Scorching Sands used to hit would-be checks such as Aggron much harder. Centiskorch backs up Roselia offensively, pressuring steel types that Roselia cannot and provides Flash Fire and adequate typing to switch into several Roselia checks, and vice versa (Roselia offensively pressures most rock types in the tier). However, the real reason that I chose this mon to pair with Roselia is how it takes advantage of one of Roselia's biggest boons: spikes. Centiskorch forces switches with Fire Lash and disrupts the opponent's boots with Knock Off, making the hazards that Roselia set up very hard to deal with. Of course, these two should be accompanied with mons that beat Flying types, but together they make a good offensive hazard-stacking presence.

Lanturn @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 40 HP / 160 Def / 20 SpA / 180 SpD / 108 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Scald
- Toxic
- Heal Bell

Lanturn's Electric/Water typing allows it to be an amazing partner with Roserade due to it helping with Flying-, Ice- and Fire-type Pokemon like Magmortar, Charizard, and Xatu. Lanturn pivots Roserade and neighboring teammates in safely with Volt Switch and has the ability to burn Atk-based Pokemon that may try to threaten Roserade. Heal Bell does not really compliment Roserade since its normally using Natural Cure to heal status ailments but together they can spread status together from a various amount of forms like burns from Scald and Toxic or Toxic Spikes, Sleep Powder, and Stun Spore.

Hi friends! I wanted to attach to this post a video montage appreciating each user and having them discuss their posts but I couldn't get it done in time and I have been away from home since Saturday enjoying my summer up in the central coast. I will do this next week though so if you want to be involved, hit me up on the dms or on discord to organise a 2-5 min quick chat about your submission! (ps. thank you in advance)

Congratulations to SergioRules for submitting the winning match of Archeops and being the best cupid this week.

Week 2: Mesprit

(this mon is the cutest thing)

This week we have one of PU's all time favourite mons Mesprit looking for a match. Mesprit has multiple sets and it is open for you to decide in your submissions which set you want to match. Just a reminder, reservations can only be held for 24 hours.

Good luck!!

:ss/virizion:

Virizion @ Life Orb
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge

SR Mesprit often has trouble beating walls such as Gigalith and Palossand, as well as not being able to do much against mons like Guzzlord and becoming set up fodder for Scrafty. Virizion patches up those issues, as none of the aforementioned mons want to switch in to a LO Leaf Blade or CC. Mes’ access to U-turn also eases up prediction, and in return, those mons become fodder for Viriz to set up on or to fire off an attack. Defensively, Virizion takes Dark-type attacks for Mes and makes the opposing team think twice about clicking Knock Off. To be fair, Virizion doesn’t have the physical bulk to take more than one or two Koffs, but that can be remedied by a mon like Silvally-Fairy or Aromatisse.

:ss/exeggutor-alola:

Exeggutor-Alola @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Harvest
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Teleport
- Substitute
- Giga Drain / Psychic / Flamethrower / Dragon Pulse / Knock Off
- Synthesis / Toxic / Knock Off

This thing pairs with Mesprit to make an absolutely phenomenal voltturntele core (i added the tele in bc this thing uses teleport). Mesprit deals with the Poison types which this doesnt like, and this provides good defensive utility, and can run many different moves depending on the team's wish. Flamethrower for example deals with Steel types that Mesprit/Eggy-A usually arent able to deal with. You can use normal Eggy, but I just didn't want double Psychic.

Paired with mesprit, this match made in heaven is designed to provide amounts of momentum for your teams previously unheard of before. Vote for Eggy, the central force of this new Mesprit-building ideology. (ok thats it for my propaganda)

thanks for reading :).

Hello all! I will be running Matchmaking starting this week, and I'd like to thank PTF for getting this off the ground running this generation. I plan to keep this up and running smoothly so that our lonely PU mons can find their true loves to work with.
That being said, our previous winning mon is newly single after the ban of Roserade a few weeks ago, so let's all welcome them back to the matchmaking scene and help them find a new partner. This week's hopeless romantic is none other than:

Archeops!
Currently being an S-tier Pokemon along with Virizion, Archeops spends most of its time being a
strong offensive pivot with its access to U-turn and a very quick base 110 Speed stat. You can often
find it in the gym, working out with its 140 base Attack as well. With strong STAB moves like Stone Edge
and Dual Wingbeat or Acrobatics, Archeops can be tough to handle for some people, not to mention
its wide array of coverage moves like Earthquake, Heat Wave, Knock Off, and Aqua Tail, but no doubt
that pairing with it will be well worth it in the long run. You may even find it gardening in its free time,
using its own Power Herbs to unleash a brutal Meteor Beam while boosting its Special Attack.
Unfortunately, Archeops does suffer from a terrible ability in Defeatist, and potential partners may want
to take this into consideration.

Please help our lonely lover find their place with a partner, and feel free to use whatever Archeops set you care to match with, but please specify what set it is in your post for accurate voting. Submission periods will now last until Friday, while voting will take place until around 6pm Sunday. You may reserve a Pokemon in a post as long as you submit a set within 24 hours, otherwise you forfeit the reservation.

Good luck and have fun matchmaking!

Exeggutor-Alola @ Choice Specs
Ability: Frisk
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Leaf Storm
- Flamethrower
- Sludge Bomb

Paired with standard HDB U-turn Archeops, Choice Specs Exeggutor-Alola is an excellent teammate, as Archeops lures in bulky Ground- and Water-types due to its threatening offensive presence, and can pivot into Exeggutor-Alola as these Pokemon come in. Archeops's previous hassles in Vaporeon, Palossand, Sandaconda and Regirock are taken advantage of with ease, Exeggutor-Alola has a very limited amount of competent switch-ins and hence it almost always gets an OHKO. To a lesser extent, Archeops also helps with Charizard and offensive Talonflame that may attempt to come in on a Choice Specs Leaf Storm and set up, generally patching each others weaknesses well. I prefer Sludge Bomb over secondary Grass-type coverage due to being a nice mid-ground against Fairy-types when those nasty Fire-/Flying-types are existent in the back, as well as just generally being more useful over time; however, Giga Drain is also an option.

Lanturn @ Leftovers
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 36 HP / 196 Def / 16 SpA / 220 SpD / 40 Spe
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Volt Switch
- Toxic
- Protect

Lanturn ability to take on Water- and Electric-type moves like Flip Turn from Basculin and Kabutops and Thunderbolt from Jolteon makes it a great pair with Archeops. Lanturn also provides a slow Volt Switch which safely allows Archeops onto the field. As such, Lanturn and Archeops forms an effective volt-turn core which provides teams with strong momentum.

:ss/Archeops:
Archeops @ Heavy-Duty Boots

Whimsicott @ Choice Specs
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Moonblast
- Energy Ball
- U-turn
- Switcheroo

Whimsicott forms a U-turn pivot core with Archeops, and can handle various physically bulky pokemon like Regirock and Palossand with Energy Ball. Switcheroo can also create opportunities for either Archeops or another team member to exploit.

So when building with archeops you want something that helps to deal with fat water types and fat ground/rock types and what other mon does that better than virizion? This pokemon not only is amazing but covers perfectly all the weakness from archeops, same way archeops does with virizion's. This 2 togheter form a perfect offensive core with little to no defensive counterplay.

Mesprit @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- U-turn
- Stealth Rock
- Healing Wish

Mesprit helps standard offensive pivot Archeops in several ways. First, by setting Stealth Rock
to help wear things down for Archeops to more reliably break through things. Secondly, it forms
a double U-turn core to continuously force switches and chip things for Archeops and other
teammates. Lastly, Healing Wish is a great support option that can help a weakened Archeops
come back in at full even at the lowest HP.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And with that, submissions have concluded! Here are this week's potential matches.

Please vote for two submissions, ranked in order of preference and no self-votes:
1. Virizion
2. Alolan Exeggutor
