**Substitute and Taunt Users**: Substitute and Taunt users such as Poliwrath, Froslass, and Oricorio-G all shut down Pyukumuku from being able to use any of its moves. Taunt also forces Pyukumuku out, to prevent it from taking Struggle recoil.
**Electric- and Grass-types**: Electric- and Grass-type Pokemon such as Alolan Raichu, Eelektross, Simisage, Victreebel, and Ludicolo are all able to force Pyukumuku out with their super effective attacks.
**Poison- and Steel-types**: Poison- and Steel-types fully wall Pyukumuku variants running Toxic, as they are immune to being poisoned. Several of these Pokemon have additional methods of beating Pyukumuku one versus one. Skuntank for instance can use Crunch or Acid Spray to eventually get Defense or Special Defense drops, while Alolan Dugtrio can set up a Substitute freely against Pyukumuku and threaten to Toxic it.
**Wallbreakers**: Wallbreakers such as Stoutland, Choice Specs Aurorus, and Guzzlord are all able to overcome Pyukumuku’s naturally high defensive stats and 2HKO it. Guzzlord is especially worrisome, as after it knocks out Pyukumuku and acquires a Beast Boost, it can begin to steamroll over a stall team.

- As one of only two viable Unaware users in the tier, Pyukumuku has established itself as solid check to several physical attackers such as Mudsdale, Primeape, and non-SubToxic variants of Kangaskhan.
- With its mono-Water typing and access to reliable recovery options, Pyukumuku provides stall teams with a way to check setup attackers such as Swords Dance Dodrio and Lycanroc while not compounding weaknesses with its teammates.
- However, Pyukumuku faces competition from Quagsire and Poliwrath, two other bulky Water-types that can check setup attackers with Unaware and Circle Throw, respectively whilst maintaining some sort of offensive presence. Quagsire and Poliwrath also both have access to Scald, unlike Pyukumuku, giving them further utility.
- Pyukumuku also lacks any attacking moves other than the rare Counter, being fairly easily shut down by Substitute and Taunt users such as Kangaskhan, Froslass, and Oricorio-E.
- Lastly, Pyukumuku cannot fit on any playstyle viably outside of stall, further hampering its ability to fit onto a multitude of teams unlike Quagsire and Poliwrath.

Moves
========
- Rest restores all of Pyukumuku’s health and most importantly changes its status condition to being asleep. This gives Pyukumuku a viable, albeit awkward, way of alleviating its status, namely Toxic.
- Block traps more passive Pokemon such as specially defensive Alolan Sandslash, Mudsdale, and Regirock.
- Spite gives Pyukumuku a viable method of PP stalling does after trapping them with Block, especially considering the guaranteed turns of sleep Rest provides.
========
- Maximum HP and Defense EVs alongside a Bold nature allows Pyukumuku to check a myriad of physical attackers such as Alolan Sandslash and Choice Scarf Primeape.
- Unaware ignores an opposing Pokemon’s stat boosts, giving Pyukumuku a niche on stall teams that would otherwise be overwhelmed by setup attackers.
- Ghostium Z in tandem with Spite fully heals Pyukumuku and gives it a one-time recovery option when it is Taunted and cannot otherwise
- Poisonium Z, on the other hand, can make available the one-time use of Z-Toxic, giving Pyukumuku a Defense boost to check physical attackers and bypass Taunt users, badly poisoning them. Both Ghostium Z and Poisonium Z prevent Pyukumuku from having its item removed or traded away, which is beneficial for stall teams.
- Leftovers is yet a third option to use as Pyukumuku’s held item, allowing it to gradually restore its health beyond just Rest and Recover. Notably, Leftovers is the only recommended item to not use of the Z Crystal; however, Leftovers can also be Tricked away unlike a Z Crystal, which can incapacitate Pyukumuku if given a choice item.
========
- Pyukumuku should be used primarily as a way to check physical attackers, including ones that setup such as Bulk Up Gurdurr and Swords Dance Alolan Sandslash.
- Pyukumuku should try to maintain a sufficient amount of health at all times in order to consistently check the physical attackers it aims to check.
- From Team Preview, one should look to see which Pokemon on the opposing side is susceptible to being trapped by Pyukumuku and removed from play. This may change by running Spite over Toxic or vice versa.
- If PP stalling with Spite, use the guaranteed sleep turns Rest provides to further drain the PP of an opposing trapped Pokemon.
========
- It can be hard for stall teams to check set up attackers that Pyukumuku has a rough matchup against such as Alolan Raichu and Simisage. Teammates such as Guzzlord and Altaria can help against such foes.
- Specially defensive walls such as Audino and Articuno complement Pyukumuku well in stall teams as they’re able to take on special attackers that Pyukumuku gets worn down more easily against. They also happen to take on several of the other Electric- and Grass-types Pyukumuku struggles against such as Eelektross and Ludicolo.
- Entry hazard support from Pokemon such as Regirock and Roselia can help Pyukumuku wear down teams faster, especially if its runs Toxic.
- Likewise, Pokemon such as Skuntank and the aforementioned Altaria and Articuno can remove entry hazards for Pyukumuku and its team. Pyukumuku directly benefits from having entry hazards removed on its side by no longer having to prematurely use one of its recovery moves, which is important to PP stall foes and keep itself healthy.
Other Options
=============
- Pyukumuku could use Soak to make Poison- and Steel-types such as Skuntank and Metang susceptible to Toxic. However, these threats can just switch out after seeing Pyukumuku use Soak, and Pyukumuku is strapped for moveslots.
- Counter is Pyukumuku’s only attacking option, dealing twice as much damage back to physical attackers. However, the strategy takes up an important moveslot and still leaves Pyukumuku open to special attackers.
- Innards Out may at first seem like an impressive ability, allowing Pyukumuku to inflict recoil against an opposing Pokemon after it’s taken out similar to that of Skuntank’s Aftermath. However, Unaware is Pyukumuku’s defining niche on stall teams, and without it, Pyukumuku can easily be overcome by setup attackers.
