QC (0/2) Ting-Lu DOU analysis

Written by Commander Beta.

[Overview]

Ting-Lu's stats, moveset, and ability allow it to act as a strong defensive Pokemon that can work well on several team structures. In particular, it can switch in against powerful special attackers such as Chi-Yu and Gholdengo and use Vessel of Ruin to reduce the damage inflicted on both Ting-Lu and its partner, while still maintaining solid physical bulk, and having the ability to phase out Pokemon either to prevent them from setting up on it or accumulating hazard damage with Whirlwind. Its great bulk shines when paired with other Pokemon who also look to slowly whittle away at the opponent like defensive Glimmora, Garganacl, and Wo-Chien. Ting-Lu can end up being a momentum sink due to its passivity, especially without Whirlwind, in addition to it struggling vs certain structures such as physical offense teams anchored by Chien-Pao. Ting-Lu is also vulnerable to opposing passive damage such as Glimmora's Toxic Spikes, Garganacl's Salt Cure, and opposing entry hazards.

[Set]
Name: The Wall
Ting Lu @ Leftovers / Sitrus Berry
Ability: Vessel of Ruin
Tera Type: Grass / Water
EVs: 172 HP / 84 Atk / 252 SpD
Adamant / Brave Nature
- Stomping Tantrum
- Ruination / Payback / Stealth Rock
- Spikes / Stealth Rock
- Whirlwind

* Stomping Tantrum provides a strong STAB option and hits Pokemon such as Chi-Yu, Iron Hands, and Gholdengo decently hard.

* Ruination allows Ting-Lu's teammates to pick off Pokemon weakened by it.

* Payback can hit Ground resists or immunities. Ting-Lu will almost always benefit from the double damage since it will rarely move before it´s target.

* Stealth Rock and Spikes whittle down the opposing team, which matches the slower pace Ting-Lu usually operates at.

* Whirlwind can force Pokemon out to either reset boosts or accumulate hazard damage.

* 84 Attack EVs and an Adamant nature allow Ting-Lu to OHKO Chi-Yu with Stomping Tantrum, with the rest of the EVs in bulk. 32 Speed EVs also allow Ting-Lu to outrun Modest Gholdengo in Tailwind.

* Leftovers or Sitrus Berry greatly increase Ting-Lu's longevity, with the former being better over a long period of time, and the latter being more immediately useful.

* Ting-Lu benefits most from a defensive Tera Type, Grass-Type makes it immune to Spore and Rage Powder, while Water-Type is all around excellent at withstanding hits if Amoonguss isn´t a big concern.

* Vessel of Ruin weakens the Special Attack stat of other pokemon by 25%, it greatly augments it´s team´s special bulk, however, one must be careful of it´s effect on it´s partner, making it a double edge sword.

[Strategy Comments]
Other options.

If one fears Amoonguss' or Brute Bonnet's Spore, and doesn´t intend to use Tera Grass-Type on Ting-Lu, Safety Googles may be used, however, it constitutes a substantial commitment. Other defensive Tera-Types may be adequate for a given team, for example Tera Poison-Type helps against Fighting-Type powerful attackers such as Iron Hands, as does Fairy-Type which trades a weakness to Steel- and Poison-Type for Dragon-Type immunity and a Dark-Type resistance. Snarl can further cripple Special attackers while Taunt may be useful for stopping Trick Room, recovery and status moves, however, it is often hard to make room for them.

[Overview] [OVERVIEW]

The combination of it´s stats, ability, and solid support options, make Ting-Lu a very valuable defensive asset, especially for balance and hazard stack teams who don´t mind having their partners´ special attack reduced as much. Ting-Lu's stats, moveset, and ability allow it to act as a strong defensive Pokemon that can work well on several team structures. In particular, It it can switch in against powerful special attackers such as Chi-Yu and Gholdengo and use Vessel of Ruin to reduce the damage inflicted on it´s partner on both Ting-Lu and its partner, while still maintaining solid physical bulk, (RC) and phazing out any pokemon trying to set-up (except Gholdengo due to it´s ability) while also accumulating Stealth Rock and Spikes damage which it can set up the ability to phase out Pokemon either to prevent them from setting up on it or accumulating hazard damage with Whirlwind. It´s great defenses thrive when combined Its great bulk shines when paired with other pokemon Pokemon who also look to slowly whittle away at the opponent like defensive Glimmora, Garganacl and Wo-Chien(Please keep in mind Smogon Analyses use the Oxford comma, which means when doing a list, you put a comma after every option). However, Ting-Lu can become passive and be ignored in some cases, especially against Physically Offensive teams led by Chien-Pao, who aren´t affected by it´s ability, they can also overwhealm it if they choose to focus it, as can rain. Ting-Lu can end up being a momentum sink due to its passivity, especially without Whirlwind, in addition to it struggling vs certain structures such as physical offense teams anchored by Chien-Pao. It is Ting-Lu is also vulnerable to opposing passive damage like such as Glimmora´s Glimmora's Toxic Spikes, Garganacl´s Garganacl's Salt Cure and even Ruination from a Ting-Lu mirror.. , (AC) and opposing entry hazards.

- Stomping Tantrum / Earthquake
- Throat Chop / Stealth Rock / Ruination

*Stomping Tantrum or Earthquake provides a strong STAB option, especially useful against Chi-Yu, Gholdengo, Garganacl and pokemon who use Tera Type-Steel, who are hit super effectively. and hits Pokemon such as Chi-Yu, Iron Hands, and Gholdengo decently hard.

* Throat Chop can hit Ground resists or immunities and is very useful versus Trick Room teams, it can also disables sound moves, like Snarl, or Sylveon´s Hyper Voice which might otherwise force it out. (Not gonna comment on this one since the set was changed)

* Ruination can half HP, which is very useful against bulky pokemon. Ruination allows Ting-Lu's teammates to pick off Pokemon weakened by it.

* Stealth Rock and Spikes can be easily set up thanks to Ting-Lu´s bulk, and whittle down the opponent as they switch. whittle down the opposing team, which matches the slower pace Ting-Lu usually operates at.

* Whirlwind can deny setup (except Gholdengo due to it´s ability) and force hazard damage. force Pokemon out to either reset boosts or accumulate hazard damage.

* Protect can maximize the residual damage from Poison, Salt Cure and/or Sandstorm.

* 84 Atk EV and a +Atk nature allows Ting-Lu to 0HKO Chi-Yu, and the rest is invested into bulk. Additional speed EV´s may be used to Whirlwind opposing Ting-Lu. 84 Attack EVs and an Adamant nature allow Ting-Lu to OHKO Chi-Yu with Stomping Tantrum, with the rest of the EVs in bulk. 32 Speed EVs also allow Ting-Lu to outrun Modest Gholdengo in Tailwind.

* Leftovers or Sitrus Berry provide healing to extend it´s life and ability to check the enemy greatly increase Ting-Lu's longevity, with the former being better over a long period of time, and the latter being more immediately useful.

* Ting-Lu benefits most from a defensive Tera Type, Fairy- and Water-Type are good options. (Change this for the new tera types)

Other options.

If one fears Amoonguss´ or Brute Bonnet´s Spore, Safety Googles or Tera Grass-Type may be used. (Grass is now on the main set) Other defensive Tera-Types may be adequate for a given team, for example Tera Poison-Type. (Rewrite the defensive tera line but mention more than one Tera-type and explain what makes them worthwhile over the main two) Snarl can further cripple Special attackers while Taunt may be useful for stopping Trick Room, recovery and status moves. (List the downsides of using these moves, for OO you have to talk about what makes these moves inferior) More Atk EV is an option, although it won´t be able to 0HKO relevant targets unless several layers of hazards have been set up.

Change the moveset to the one below and the tera types to grass/water

- Stomping Tantrum
- Ruination / Payback / Stealth Rock
- Spikes / Stealth Rock
- Whirlwind

Also, please just use the copy paste format we gave you next time, there's a ton of reasons why you have to use it and this just makes things way harder for all parties involved.

The DOU QC team has decided to reassign this due to the general quality of it making it extremely difficult to check, as well as the overall time needed to check it also potentially being long, which is undesirable with HOME potentially releasing soon. Apologies.
