[Overview]
Ting-Lu's stats, moveset, and ability allow it to act as a strong defensive Pokemon that can work well on several team structures. In particular, it can switch in against powerful special attackers such as Chi-Yu and Gholdengo and use Vessel of Ruin to reduce the damage inflicted on both Ting-Lu and its partner, while still maintaining solid physical bulk, and having the ability to phase out Pokemon either to prevent them from setting up on it or accumulating hazard damage with Whirlwind. Its great bulk shines when paired with other Pokemon who also look to slowly whittle away at the opponent like defensive Glimmora, Garganacl, and Wo-Chien. Ting-Lu can end up being a momentum sink due to its passivity, especially without Whirlwind, in addition to it struggling vs certain structures such as physical offense teams anchored by Chien-Pao. Ting-Lu is also vulnerable to opposing passive damage such as Glimmora's Toxic Spikes, Garganacl's Salt Cure, and opposing entry hazards.
[Set]
Name: The Wall
Ting Lu @ Leftovers / Sitrus Berry
Ability: Vessel of Ruin
Tera Type: Grass / Water
EVs: 172 HP / 84 Atk / 252 SpD
Adamant / Brave Nature
- Stomping Tantrum
- Ruination / Payback / Stealth Rock
- Spikes / Stealth Rock
- Whirlwind
* Stomping Tantrum provides a strong STAB option and hits Pokemon such as Chi-Yu, Iron Hands, and Gholdengo decently hard.
* Ruination allows Ting-Lu's teammates to pick off Pokemon weakened by it.
* Payback can hit Ground resists or immunities. Ting-Lu will almost always benefit from the double damage since it will rarely move before it´s target.
* Stealth Rock and Spikes whittle down the opposing team, which matches the slower pace Ting-Lu usually operates at.
* Whirlwind can force Pokemon out to either reset boosts or accumulate hazard damage.
* 84 Attack EVs and an Adamant nature allow Ting-Lu to OHKO Chi-Yu with Stomping Tantrum, with the rest of the EVs in bulk. 32 Speed EVs also allow Ting-Lu to outrun Modest Gholdengo in Tailwind.
* Leftovers or Sitrus Berry greatly increase Ting-Lu's longevity, with the former being better over a long period of time, and the latter being more immediately useful.
* Ting-Lu benefits most from a defensive Tera Type, Grass-Type makes it immune to Spore and Rage Powder, while Water-Type is all around excellent at withstanding hits if Amoonguss isn´t a big concern.
* Vessel of Ruin weakens the Special Attack stat of other pokemon by 25%, it greatly augments it´s team´s special bulk, however, one must be careful of it´s effect on it´s partner, making it a double edge sword.
[Strategy Comments]
Other options.
If one fears Amoonguss' or Brute Bonnet's Spore, and doesn´t intend to use Tera Grass-Type on Ting-Lu, Safety Googles may be used, however, it constitutes a substantial commitment. Other defensive Tera-Types may be adequate for a given team, for example Tera Poison-Type helps against Fighting-Type powerful attackers such as Iron Hands, as does Fairy-Type which trades a weakness to Steel- and Poison-Type for Dragon-Type immunity and a Dark-Type resistance. Snarl can further cripple Special attackers while Taunt may be useful for stopping Trick Room, recovery and status moves, however, it is often hard to make room for them.
