AG (QC [3/3]) Magearna (GP [2/2])

[OVERVIEW]

Magearna offers a fantastic answer to Xerneas, Arceus-Dark, Yveltal, Deoxys-A, and Mega Mewtwo Y variants lacking Fire Blast that can also provide the team with momentum. It has support moves such as Heal Bell and Heart Swap at its disposal, which help it thrive in the Anything Goes metagame; the latter specifically makes Magearna a reliable Geomancy Xerneas and Calm Mind Arceus-Dark answer. Furthermore, Magearna's great defensive typing allows it to check Flying-types like Yveltal, Vivillon, and Arceus-Flying as well as Rock-types such as Tyranitar and Arceus-Rock. However, even with such valuable defensive utility, Magearna has a disadvantageous matchup against some important offensive threats in the tier such as Primal Groudon, Arceus-Ground, and Ho-Oh, the former two of which also stop it from using Volt Switch freely. Other Steel-types in the tier such as Necrozma-DM and Arceus-Steel compete with Magearna by offering different utility like Stealth Rock and reliable recovery. They can also use Magearna as setup fodder because of how weak it is. Since Magearna is forced to maximize its bulk, it sacrifices most of its offensive presence, making it a very passive Pokemon to have on a team.

Moves
========

Fleur Cannon gives Magearna powerful STAB move to hit the likes of Yveltal, Arceus-Dark, Mega Rayquaza, and Marshadow. Volt Switch enables Magearna to gain momentum on the opposing team while avoiding trapping from Mega Gengar and Gothitelle. Heart Swap is essential for Magearna because it makes it a reliable answer to Geomancy Xerneas and Calm Mind Arceus variants barring Arceus-Ground and Arceus-Steel. It also allows Magearna to swap over its Special Attack drops from Fleur Cannon onto the opponent. Pain Split can help Magearna stay healthy throughout the game. Heal Bell supports Magearna's teammates by curing them from status but makes it much more vulnerable to getting worn down, though Z-Heal Bell fixes this issue.

Set Details
========

Maximum HP and Special Defense investment help Magearna take on special attackers as best as possible. No Speed IVs make Magearna as slow as possible, allowing it to get the slowest Volt Switch possible off. Leftovers gives Magearna passive recovery, which is especially important if it lacks Pain Split. Normalium Z can be run alongside Heal Bell to offer Magearna one full HP heal. Soul-Heart is Magearnas only ability, which can give it a Special Attack boost occasionally.

Usage Tips
========

Use Magearna as a slow pivot to bring your team's wallbreakers in safely. Try to keep Magearna healthy to check Pokemon such as Xerneas, Refresh Calm Mind Arceus variants, Yveltal, and Deoxys-A reliably throughout the game. Also, use Magearna to absorb status from Lugia or Chansey. Fleur Cannon should be used carefully because of its low PP. Try to remove Ground-types on the opposing team for Magearna to freely bring in your team's breakers with Volt Switch. Be careful when scouting for coverage moves on Yveltal and Arceus, as they can carry moves such as Heat Wave and Fire Blast. Use Pain Split throughout the game to keep Magearna healthy. Heal Bell should be utilized when you want to cure the status of one of Magearna's teammates or when you want to heal up with Z-Heal Bell.

Team Options
========

Reliable answers to Primal Groudon, Arceus-Ground, and Ho-Oh are vital for Magearna to function, and Arceus-Water and Zygarde-C make for good examples. Magearna enjoys entry hazards being set up alongside it to take even more advantage of momentum gained by Volt Switch and weaken Ground-types even further. Ferrothorn or Primal Groudon achieve this very well. Powerful breakers such as Primal Kyogre, Marshadow, and Mega Rayquaza make for good partners because they can take advantage of the free switches Magearna can provide for them. Ho-Oh pairs well with Magearna because it can check Necrozma-DM, Calm Mind Arceus-Ground, and Calm Mind Arceus-Steel reliably unless they pack super effective coverage moves. Yveltal and Arceus-Dark appreciate Magearnas ability to reliably answer Fairy-types. Mega Gengar and Gothitelle can take advantage of Magearna's slow Volt Switch and aim to trap Pokemon that switch into it. Lunala also pairs well with Magearna due to its ability to switch into Yveltal and its pivoting ability.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Flash Cannon can be run on Magearna as a STAB attack that doesn't drop Magearna's Special Attack and allows Magearna to potentially clean up late-game. It also allows it to beat Calm Mind Arceus-Fairy variants, but it gives up the opportunity to nail Dragon-types such as Mega Rayquaza and Dark-types such as Yveltal and Arceus-Dark. Volt Switch can be dropped to run both Heal Bell and Pain Split, but it lets Magearna be trapped by Gothitelle and Mega Gengar and gives up its ability to gain momentum. Offensive sets might look appealing, but due to the metagame's power level, they fail to do major damage or set up effectively.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ground-types**: Primal Groudon and Arceus-Ground stop Magearna's momentum due to blocking Volt Switch and can retaliate with powerful Ground-type STAB attacks, since they don't worry about getting damaged by Fleur Cannon.

**Ho-Oh**: Ho-Oh easily takes Magearna's Fleur Cannon and can freely use Defog or Sacred Fire afterwards, though it risks switching in on a Volt Switch and allowing something to switch in for free.

**Steel-types**: Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Necrozma-DM don't stop Magearna from using Volt Switch but can comfortably take Fleur Cannon and take advantage of Magearna by heavily damaging it, setting up entry hazards, or using Leech Seed in Ferrothorn's case.

**Physical Attackers**: Necrozma-DM, Life Orb Mega Rayquaza, Marshadow, and Swords Dance Arceus formes can unleash powerful attacks against Magearna, heavily compromising its defensive utility.

**Powerful Special Attackers**: Strong special attackers that can hit Magearna neutrally like Primal Kyogre and Lunala both can deal heavy damage with their STAB attacks.

  • Magearna offers a fantastic answer to Xerneas, Arceus-Dark, Yveltal, Deoxys-A, and Mega-Mewtwo-Y variants lacking Fire Blast, while providing the team with momentum. Mention Vivillon here because eating Hurricanes + taking boosts from that thing is really useful.
  • Magearna has support moves such as Heal Bell and Heart Swap at its disposal, which help it thrive in the Anything Goes metagame.
  • Furthermore, Magearna serves as an important flying resist to check Pokemon such as Choice Band Mega Rayquaza, Yveltal, and Arceus-Flying. I'd change this to a general comment about Magearna having a good typing, Magearna also does not switch into Band MRay even though it resists Dragon Ascent.
  • Even with such valueable defensive utility, Magearna has a disadvantagous matchup against some important offensive threats in the tier such as Primal Groudon, Arceus-Ground and Ho-Oh.
  • Other Steel-types in the tier such as Necrozma-Dusk-Mane and Arceus-Steel offer Magearna competition by offering different utility like Stealth Rock and reliable recovery.
  • Magearna also heavily suffers from prominent Ground-types in the tier, namely Primal Groudon and Arceus-Ground. mention that blocking Volt Switch prevents it from generating momentum
Include something about Magearna being passive. It's a good defensive mon, but it does little to actually pressure the opposing team outside of Volt Switch pivoting.

  • Fleur Cannon gives Magearna powerful and reliable STAB to hit the likes of Yveltal, Arceus-Dark, Mega Rayquaza, and Marshadow. I don't think "reliable" describes Fleur super well because it has low pp and can miss.
  • Volt Switch enables Magearna to gain momentum on the opposing team while not letting it get trapped by Mega Gengar and Gothitelle.
  • Heart Swap is essential for Magearna because it makes it a reliable Geomancy Xerneas and Calm Mind Arceus answer (barring Arceus-Ground) Magearna's not great against Calm Mind Arceus forms if it doesn't resist their stabs or if they have coverage. It might be better to mention something else here. Also mention that it can pass drops from Fleur Cannon to the opponent because that's nifty.
  • Pain Split can help Magearna stay healthy throughout the game.
  • Heal Bell supports Magearnas teammates by healing them from Status. Mention the drawback of not having Pain Split - very easy for Yveltal and stuff to wear you down

Set Details
========

  • Maximum HP and Special Defense investment help Magearna take on special attackers as well as possible.
  • Soul-Heart is Magearnas only ability. this isn't necessary
  • Leftovers give Magearna passive recovery, which is especially important if it lacks Pain Split.
  • Normalium Z can be run alongside Heal Bell to offer Magearna one full HP heal.

Usage Tips

  • Use Magearna to check Pokemon such as Arceus-Fairy, Geomancy Xerneas, Yveltal and Deoxys-Attack reliably throughout the game. Magearna can also be used to absorb status from Lugia or Chansey.
  • Try to remove Ground-types on the opposing team for Magearna to freely bring in your teams breakers with Volt Switch.
  • Be careful to scout for coverage moves on Yveltal and Arceus, such as Heat Wave and Earth Power or Fire Blast respectively. Also keep Magearna healthy in case you face an Hidden Power Fire or Ground variant of Xerneas. I'd move the second bit up to the first bullet, it's really important to not get Magearna worn down so it can take a boosted Xerneas hit.

Team Options
========

  • Reliable answers to Primal Groudon, Arceus-Ground, and Ho-Oh are vital for Magearna to function. Arceus-Water and Zygarde-Complete make for good examples.
  • Magearna enjoys entry hazards alongside it to take even more advantage of momentum gained by Volt Switch and weaken Ground-types even further. Ferrothorn or Toxapex achieve this very well. Toxapex isn't a very good partner, replace it with Primal Groudon or another rocker.
  • Powerful breakers such as Choice Specs Yveltal, Marshadow and Mega Rayquaza make for good partners because they can take advantage of the free switches Magearna can provide for them.
  • Ho-Oh pairs well with Magearna because it can check Necrozma-Dusk-Mane, Calm Mind Arceus-Ground and -Steel reliably unless they pack super effective coverage moves.
  • Mega Sableye offers a way to keep off Ferrothorns entry hazards and checking Marshadow and Extreme Killer Arceus. It doesn't seem like Mega Sableye offers that much from this bullet. Maybe change it to anti-hazard support in general.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Flash Cannon can be ran on Magearna for STAB that avoids Special Attack drops but it gives up the opporunity to nail Dragon-types such as Naganadel and Mega Rayquaza. Naga seems like a weird example here given that it's niche and not even weak to Fleur Cannon. I'd say the bigger drawback is no longer hitting the Dark-types it wants to check for a near ko in addition to not nailing Mega Ray.
  • Choice Specs Magearna can be considered for its offensive prowess but it gives up all of Magearna's defensive utility. Don't mention this, Specs Magearna isn't good.
  • Volt Switch can be dropped to run both Heal Bell and Pain Split but it lets Magearna be trapped by Gothitelle and Mega Gengar and gives up its ability to gain momentum.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ground-types**: Primal Groudon and Arceus-Ground stop Magearnas momentum and can retaliate with powerful Ground STAB. Elaborate a bit on how Magearna can't gain momentum vs these - it can't pivot out with Volt Switch. Also mention that both of these don't really mind Fleur Cannon (PDon resists, Arc Ground just recovers unless it's SD)

**Steel-types**: Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Necrozma-Dusk-Mane don't stop Magearna from using Volt Switch but comfortably take Fleur Cannon. Mention that Dusk Mane can hurt Magearna with strong attacks and Ferro can set hazards or Leech Seed freely vs it.

**Physical Attackers**: Necrozma-Dusk-Mane, Life Orb Mega Rayquaza, Ho-Oh, Marshadow, and Swords Dance Arceus formes can unleash powerful attacks against Magearna, heavily denting its defensive utility.

Mention Fire-types, or particularly Ho-Oh. It takes no damage from anything and isn't worn down by Volt Switch thanks to Regenerator, Sacred Fire is a ko from offensive sets.

  • Volt Switch enables Magearna to gain momentum on the opposing team while not letting it get trapped by Mega Gengar and Gothitelle.
  • Heart Swap is essential for Magearna because it makes it a reliable Geomancy Xerneas and most Calm Mind Arceus variants check running Refresh (Most CM Arceus cannot beat it unless their name is CM Arceus Ground). It also allows Magearna to swap over its Special Attack drops from Fleur Cannon.
  • Pain Split can help Magearna stay healthy throughout the game.

  • Be careful to scout for coverage moves on Yveltal and Arceus, such as Heat Wave and Earth Power or Fire Blast respectively.
This section could use a bit of work
  • First mention keeping Magearna healthy as a slow pivot that can gain momentum
  • Point about checking xerneas is solid but tack on CM Arceus Formes too, altho HP ground does the same thing as focus blast so that's marginal
  • Talk about how fleur cannon should be used sparingly but can be used occasionaly to chip ground type switch ins
  • Arceus with Earth power really doesn't damage magearna much, but heat wave yveltal does in fact chip this

Team Options

  • Reliable answers to Primal Groudon, Arceus-Ground, and Ho-Oh are vital for Magearna to function. Arceus-Water and Zygarde-Complete make for good examples.

  • Powerful breakers such as Choice Specs Yveltal, Marshadow and Mega Rayquaza make for good partners because they can take advantage of the free switches Magearna can provide for them. Specs Yveltal isn't a great breaker as of late, try mentioning Kyogre-Primal
  • Ho-Oh pairs well with Magearna because it can check Necrozma-Dusk-Mane, Calm Mind Arceus-Ground and -Steel reliably unless they pack super effective coverage moves.
  • Pokemon that can keep entry hazards, more specifically Spikes, off the field such as Mega Sableye, Giratina-O, and Defog Arceus variants help Magearna stay healthy.
  • Mention Gengar-Mega + Magearna to trap fairy types
  • Mention Yveltal / Arceus-Dark as magearna handles fairy types
  • Lunala appreciates the blocking of yveltal
  • Sableye-Mega does form a nice pivot core with Magearna, but otherwise Magearna doesn't mind SR

Good work, QC 2/3

Stoward

Ah, you're finally awake
AM check. Implement what you agree with:

Overview

I feel like Magearna's misrepresented in the overview. While it is a fantastic answer to the Pokemon mentioned, I don't really feel like providing the team with momentum is something that should be stated in the first sentence. Especially when that momentum invites in some of its biggest threats such as Primal Groudon and Arceus-Ground. Personally, the biggest selling point that Magearna provides is its ability to deter Xerneas, Vivillon, specific Calm Mind Arceus Formes (I.e Dark and Rock), and to a lesser extent, baton pass Pokemon from setting up, thanks to the unique move, Heart Swap (Yeah Manaphy gets it too, but you're never going to see Manaphy outside of ladder and no manaphy has run it ever).

Also a selling point about Volt Switch, is that it prevents it from being trapped by Gothitelle and Mega Gengar - something that is a struggle for most passive Pokemon. I know that this is mentioned in moves, but I feel like it's decent enough to mention in the overview.

I'd also like to see more detail about Magearna's lack of recovery, as Pain Split only works with foes with a large amount of HP, and Z-Heal Bell means you can't run another Z move user on your team. Also it's a single-use recovery move and removes the small amount of recovery that leftovers offer. Furthermore, this lack of recovery, combined with the fact that Magearna falls to hard hitting attacks, both from physical and special attackers (As mentioned in C&C), means that Magearna can essentially only check specific threats. As a result, it needs a lot of support in order for it to function effectively.

I get the idea behind 0 speed IVs allowing Magearna to have a slow volt switch, but in that case, why not run a Sassy Nature? Only upside to running a Calm nature is that you take less damage from Foul Play (Which Magearna takes like 15% from anyway), and if you were that concerned about Foul Play damage, why not run 0 IVs in Attack?

Moves

Mention what Z Heal Bell does. I feel like set details only needs to mention why Magearna runs Normallium-Z, rather than what it does.

Set Details
Yeah these are fine. Since you're mentioning what Z-Heal Bell does in Moves, you don't need to mention it here anymore.

Usage Tips

I'd like to see something stating to avoid clicking Volt Switch until Ground-type Pokemon are eliminated. Magearna is passive enough as it is, so it's a huge momentum loss if Ground-types are brought in freely.

Team Options

Looks good to me

Other Options

Noice.

Checks and Counters

**Ho-Oh**: Ho-Oh easily takes Magearna's Fleur Cannon and freely uses Defog or Sacred Fire afterwards, though it risks switching in on a Volt Switch.
0 SpA Magearna Volt Switch vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Ho-Oh: 88-104 (24.9 - 29.4%) -- 100% chance to 4HKO

Even if it doesn't run roost (idk if Scarf Ho-Oh is a thing in AG), it gains back any damage that Magearna can dish out with Volt Switch with Regen. (I'd remove the risk bit.

**Ground-types**: Primal Groudon and Arceus-Ground stop Magearna's(+apostrophe) momentum due to blocking Volt Switch and can retaliate with their powerful Ground-type STAB moves since they don't worry about getting damaged by Fleur Cannon.

**Ho-Oh**: Ho-Oh easily takes Magearna's Fleur Cannon and freely uses Defog or Sacred Fire afterwards, though it risks switching in on a Volt Switch and allowing something to switch in for free.

**Steel-types**: Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Necrozma-Dusk-Mane Necrozma-DM don't stop Magearna from using Volt Switch but can comfortably take Fleur Cannon and can take advantage of it by heavily damaging it, setting up entry hazards,(+comma) or in Ferrothorn's(+apostrophe) case,(+comma) using Leech Seed.

**Physical Attackers**: Necrozma-Dusk-Mane Necrozma-DM, Life Orb Mega Rayquaza, Marshadow, and Swords Dance Arceus formes can unleash powerful attacks against Magearna, heavily denting its defensive utility.

**Powerful Special Attackers**: Strong Special Attackers that can hit Magearna neutrally, like Primal Kyogre and Lunala,(+comma) both deal heavy damage with their STAB attacks.

Magearna offers a fantastic answer to Xerneas, Arceus-Dark, Yveltal, Deoxys-A, and Mega-Mewtwo-Y (AHS) variants lacking Fire Blast, (RC) while providing the team with momentum. Magearna It has support moves such as Heal Bell and Heart Swap at its disposal, which help it thrive in the Anything Goes metagame. Heart Swap specifically makes Magearna a reliable Geomancy Xerneas and Calm Mind Arceus-Dark answer due to it stealing their boosts and making Magearna stronger. Furthermore, Magearna serves with a great defensive typing, (AC) allowing it to check Flying-types like Yveltal, Vivillon, and Arceus-Flying, (RC) as well as Rock-types such as Tyranitar and Arceus-Rock. Even with such valueable valuable defensive utility, Magearna has a disadvantagous disadvantageous matchup against some important offensive threats in the tier such as Primal Groudon, Arceus-Ground, (AC) and Ho-Oh. Other Steel-types in the tier such as Necrozma-DM Dusk-Mane and Arceus-Steel offer Magearna have competition with Magearna by offering different utility like Stealth Rock and reliable recovery. They can also both use Magearna as set up setup fodder because of how weak it is. Magearna also heavily suffers from prominent Ground-types in the tier, namely Primal Groudon and Arceus-Ground, (AC) because they stop it from using Volt Switch freely. Since Magearna is forced to maximize its bulk, it sacrifices most of its offensive presence, making it a very passive Pokemon to have on a team.
