Subject of this week's TOTW, a-tales was a mon I was excited to try out. It has a lot of useful traits for HO. Its snow defense boost means it can at worst, trade with a strong physical attacker (takes 89% max from tera flying scarf gapdos brave bird lmao), it completely dominates the sun/rain matchups by resetting the weather and forcing out the abusers, allowing chip on the defensive mons of the team or the setter (politoed is 2hit ko'd by freeze dry), and has a very high speed stat. I decided to use a NP set for this mon. Freeze dry was chosen over blizzard to allow a-tales to super effectively hit water types, moonblast is good stab, and tera blast ground means it can eliminate steel types for teammates. LO is needed in order to get crucial rolls, such as always OHKO'ing specs hoodra and having a high chance to OHKO specially defensive empoleon at +2. Plus, it means if a-tales isn't able to get an NP up, it isn't a complete paper towel.
The second mon of the main core, yanmega does yanmega things. Flinch targets and sweep games. Normally, the main issue of yanmega is that other teammates want to use tera as well, and it can't break through steels without tera. This team tries to remove steels as much as it can, between tera blast ground a-tales, low kick bisharp, and terrakion+armarouge doing there thing. However of course, if required, yanmega can tera ground to remove steel types for its teammates. Standard set, because that's the best set.
I of course, needed a suicide lead for the team, so I decided on terrakion. This is just a standard set, I decided against taunt on it in order to make it a much more threatening mon with SD and since we have maushold, hazards can be lifted if needed.
With two stealth rock weak mons, I of course needed to use maushold to alleviate that issue. This is mostly a standard mouse set, and it also appreciates ninetales and yanmega luring in and destroying the steel types, which commonly wall it. Tera ground helps in the thundy matchup, ignoring its t-wave to setup again or pop-bomb it.
I needed some sort of anti HO element, and bisharp was exactly what the doctor ordered. This set of bisharp contains one move that is a pick unique, low kick. This allows bisharp to win the 1v1 against opposing bisharp and helps against steel types that may wall it. Tera flying helps it set up against fighting types and can turn them into setup fodder if they are choice locked.
Honestly, the last slot on this team was kinda flexible, as the other members covered most bases. I started out with feraligatr, but it didn't do too much. So I decided on good old armarouge. Standard set, it does well into most things lmao.
So unlike these normies, I decided to use a different rotom form (see what I did there). Rotom normal actually is pretty different to the other formes. It has 5 more base speed, with 30 less in defense and special defense and 10 less in special attack. Most times, this is worse, as 5 less speed is not worth much compared to the much superior bulk. However, rotom normal is able to outspeed revavroom, lucario, deo-d, brambleghast (who has been seeing more usage) and porygon-z, where its other counterparts cannot. I decided to use a dual status set with hex, which was suggested by EviGaro on Discord, and this set rocks. Most t-wave immunes don't like getting burned, such as krookodile, gligar and flygon and most burn immunes don't like getting t-wave'd, such as armarouge, infernape and entei. Hex allows rotom to deal great damage, as late game it can spam hex's in order to clean up weakened teams. Volt switch allows rotom to gain momentum and get out of bad situations. Tera fairy can be useful to resist dark moves in a pinch, and allow it to t-wave something like noivern in a pinch. Leftovers allow rotom to stay on the field longer, and its a great check to the standard thundy set (knock is annoying and psychic can 2hit ko rotom, but focus blast+g-knot is walled decently well by rotom).
I needed a ghost type switchin, and some hazard removal would also be nice. So I decided on cyclizar. This is just the standard AV set, with body slam to spread para, though draco meteor can be used to have more burst damage.
I needed a stealth rocker and a bulky physical mon, so I chose gligar. This is just the standard rocker set, with tera water to resist the many water type attacks in the tier.
I needed a setup sweeper that could abuse all the status flying around, and I found registeel to be a great ID+BP is a great wincon, and registeel can still provide early game support with t-wave, crippling its switch ins and paving the way for teammates. Registeel can also act as a switch in to the many dragon type moves flying about in the meta. Tera dragon resists the fire type moves aimed at it while making it great against weather teams who usually rely on fire, water and grass moves.
I needed speed control (yes, in case the team could not para targets), and I decided on scarf terrakion. Scarf terrakion is able to clean up weakened teams very quickly, and can swap into knock off's if needed to get a justified boost. X-scissor hits the psychic types of the tier for big damage, and with tera bug and stealth rock chip, can actually 2hit ko slowbro, which is pretty neat. Tera bug is also good for resisting the ground and fighting moves aimed at terrakion. Quick attack can finish off a low health foe, such as barraskweda, from low ranges (you can even swap out tera bug for tera normal if you want to).
Finally, I needed another physically defensive mon, and slowbro is a classic. This is the standard defensive set that can spread para for the team, and with terrakion, set up nasty combos through future sight.
I started out this team by using glastrier, a mon which isn't very good. However, I believed that glastrier had potential. I don't think SD sets would ever work unless they are supported by screens and hail as it simply had too many super effective weaknesses that could OHKO it. And plus, chilling neigh means it can still snowball if needed. So I decided to go a different route, with roar. Despite its bad defensive typing, glastrier has insane defensive stats at 100/130/110. This means any setup sweeper that isn't threatening it for super effective damage can't OHKO glastrier, and thus it can roar them out. Roar also builds up hazard chip and can allow glastrier to do more damage to its switch ins. The speed evs outspeed palossand, with the rest in attack and hp. Icicle crash is good stab, throat chop can hit slowbro for big damage (guarenteed 3hit ko at neutral, while 2hit ko'ing at +1) while stopping pokemon from roaring it out (and if its tera'd, they can't psychic noise it). CC is just a good neutral attack that can deal good damage to the bulky water types that resist its stab. Tera fighting removes all of its normal weaknesses while also boosting the power of CC.
I needed a spinner in order to keep off hazards, and who better then the bike. Cyclizar is great at dealing with special threats and rapid spinning from there. Moveset is mostly standard, last move can be anything but I chose iron head to flinch down potential threats to the team and deal with fairy types that may want to switch in.
Subject of this weeks teambuilding comp, I decided to go with a physically defensive set. This gastrodon set can usually trade pretty well with cyclizar, as rocky helmet+hazards+earth power at the very least heavily chips it down. Storm drain helps against rain teams A LOT and also unironically helps against knock off users, as with sticky hold it still takes way too much damage from knock off. Earth power benefits off a storm drain boost, spikes allow gastro to pressure switchins easier and sludge wave hits the fairy types of the tier for more damage. You can switch out sludge wave for ice beam if you want to though, as that pressures cyclizar more and hits revavroom. Tera poison gives it a fighting and fairy type resistance while also making sludge wave do more damage.
We have not one, but TWO UR mons on this team. I needed a ghost type on the team, and since I was using gastrodon, palossand was not going to work. I could also a more offensive ghost, but for this team I honestly wanted to be more defensive. I initially used sableye, but it wasn't really doing too well. I slapped on houndstone as a last ditch effort, thinking I would have to switch up to a different mon, but man, it put in work. Houndstone is incredibly physically bulky with fluffy, allowing it to take non stab super effective hits quite easily (and in a pinch stab ones too). Pain split allows houndstone to keep itself healthy over time, body press allows it to do solid damage to dark types, will-o-wisp cripples physical attackers, and shadow sneak is decent stab that can pick off a weakened foe from low health (does about 30% to hersculegion). Tera fighting removes its dark weakness while also boosting the power of body press.
I realised that I didn't have a rocker, and it needed to be something that could help on the specially defensive side. Here comes empoleon to help out. I went with the specially defensive set, as that can stomach a lot of special attacks. Stealth rocks was needed of course, so I decided to also use knock off to remove items and make it so something like volcanion is not a free switchin. Competitive also dissuades defog attempts from happening as +2 surf will still hurt. Tera flying helps against the fighting types that may threaten it while also removing its ground weakness, allowing it to slam them back with surf.
Finally, I needed another abuser of spikes, and oh boy, was armarouge a good fit. It not only can use spikes chip to slam its few answers harder, but its also a rapid spin detterence, as it can proc weak armour allowing it to gain +2 speed. This is just the standard set.
-- I really like this mon rn as u can make quite a few combos with your STAB, (Fairy-Ground) (Ice-Ground) (Ice-Electric) (Fairy-Fighting). Its a tera merchant but who cares if you are winning. Nasty Plot cuz duh, Encore is a broken ass move. So is the Ice + Ground combination.
-- I'd have pink gastro on my team but Sneakyplanner is threatening to ban me from RU discord (help). Gastrodon is pretty good for it checks half the tier.
-- I added a Spiker to aid Alolatales' breaking and sweeping stuff. Chesnaught forms a cool core with Gastro soo. Its also a fighting type check which my team desperately needs.
-- Hisuian Goodra is cool I don't like the av set but I needed it so.
