RU Starmie Full Analysis [GP:2/2]

[OVERVIEW]

Starmie is a great defensive spinner that matches up well into the common entry hazard setters of the tier and can pivot. Starmie's phenomenal Speed tier and ability to force foes out with its great super effective coverage also make it an exceptional wallbreaker and allow it to take advantage of Analytic. However, Starmie has to fear being picked off by First Impression users such as Golisopod. Moreover, naturally faster Pokemon like Raikou and Noivern can take advantage of Starmie's frailty and force it out, while specially defensive walls like Registeel, Assault Vest Reuniclus, and Porygon2 are difficult to beat without Analytic. Additionally, Analytic can be rendered useless by the opponent positioning themselves correctly.

[SET COMMENTS]

Starmie is a consistent entry hazard removal option due to its favourable matchups against common hazard setters such as Cobalion and Steelix giving it opportunity to pivot or use Rapid Spin. Teleport allows Starmie to take advantage of these entry hazard setters and get teammates in safely. Toxic is an option that cripples bulky Water-types such as Volcanion , Milotic and Seismitoad, although Roserade and Toxicroak can take advantage of it. Psyshock with 64 Special Attack EVs is an option to OHKO Roserade.

Starmie can fit on any archetype but is preferred on entry hazard and offensive teams , assisting teammates like Darmanitan and Lucario. Wallbreakers such as Toxtricity and Chandelure benefit from Teleport giving them a free switch and allowing them to threaten Starmie's checks such as Vileplume, threatening certain sets with an OHKO. Starmie's Rapid Spin and Teleport also benefit Choice Scarf Darmanitan and Calm Mind Raikou. Noivern and Crobat resist First Impression from Golisopod and stop Grass-types such as Celebi from freely setting up on Starmie; in return, Starmie's Rapid Spin allows Crobat and Noivern to run another move instead of Defog.

move 3: Grass Knot
move 4: Recover
item: Life Orb

[SET COMMENTS]

Starmie's expansive offensive movepool allows it to act as a powerful wallbreaker that can use super effective coverage and Analytic to break past usual Water-type checks. Hydro Pump is an option over Surf to deal more damage to neutral targets, although its accuracy is a concern due to Starmie's below-average bulk. Ice Beam hits Grass- and Dragon-types such as Celebi, Roserade, and Noivern. Grass Knot nails bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Seismitoad, and Suicune. Starmie can take advantage of forced switches to regain health with Recover and continue firing off hits. Rapid Spin is an option if a team desperately needs entry hazard removal, and it has the added benefit of potentially making Starmie a threatening cleaner.

Entry hazard setters such as Roserade, Necrozma, and Klefki can help Starmie pressure balance cores more easily. Pivots like Talonflame and Incineroar can bring it into Pokemon it threatens such as Diancie and Galarian Weezing. Other wallbreakers like Darmanitan and Calm Mind Raikou can form cores with Starmie to break down each other's checks in bulky Water- and Grass-types. Pangoro, Obstagoon, and Heracross deal with specially defensive walls like Umbreon and Porygon2. Finally, cleaners such as Sharpedo and Mimikyu take advantage of Starmie's wallbreaking to sweep.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Starmie can run specific coverage moves to hit certain targets. Thunderbolt is an option that hits Water-types Volcanion and revenge kills Golisopod, although it misses out on Seismitoad and Gastrodon, which can be nailed by Grass Knot. Psychic provides ample neutral coverage and eases prediction but has few relevant targets. Life Orb Starmie can run Protect to block First Impression from Golisopod and threaten it with Thunderbolt. Choice Specs allows Starmie to garner crucial OHKOs, such as on Cobalion with Hydro Pump after Stealth Rock and Decidueye, Dhelmise, and Vileplume with Analytic-boosted Ice Beam, but being Choice-locked prevents it from taking advantage of its coverage.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Faster Threats and Priority**: Due to Starmie's lack of bulk on offensive sets, Golisopod can pick it off with First Impression, and Toxicroak can OHKO with boosted Sucker Punch. Starmie is also susceptible to faster Pokemon like Raikou and Noivern, which force it out.

**Specially Defensive Walls*: Assault Vest Reuniclus, Snorlax, and Umbreon can take any of Starmie's moves and 2HKO in return, with Umbreon being able to also heal off before so.

**Bulky Water-types**: Bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Volcanion and Suicune wall defensive Starmie, but they cannot preemptively switch in due to Teleport . Offensive Starmie can still be walled by bulky Water-types; however, they cannot freely switch in due to Analytic-boosted super effective coverage.

[SET COMMENTS]
Starmie has is a consistent hazard removal role option due to its (I think a mention of Starmie's reliable recovery here would be very appropriate as well its ability to threaten the Ghost-types of the tier that could thwart Rapid Spin)great favorable match-up matchups into the tiers common hazard setters such as Cobalion and Steelix giving Starmie opportunity to Rapid Spin. that allow Starmie to switch in and spin freely for teammates that rely on Stealth Rock(Starmie is also capable of removing Spikes) removal such as Shell-Smash Cloyster and Choice Scarf Darmanitan.(You mention teammates in the second paragraph, also these were pretty poor mentions given that you generally should not be running Starmie and Cloyster on the same team, and I think you should mention something more relevant then Scarf Darmanitan.) Psyshock enables Starmie to have a better match-up into Roserade to which is threatened by an OHKO, allowing pivot heavy teammates like Xurkitree to consistantly Volt-Switch without chip from hazards.(Again teammates in the teammates section also it feels much more appropriate to say Psyshock does not let Roserade come in freely threatening it with an OHKO.) With 120 Special Attack EVs, Starmie can offensively check Spikes Bulky Cloyster by securing a 2HKO with Thunderbolt whilst freely switching in on it due to Starmie resisting its STAB. As well as this, it allows Starmie to offensively check Steelix by Scald allowing Starmie to 2HKO it, the remaining bulk in 136 HP EVs is to live two Earthquakes from uninvested Flygon and Steelix if it is needed to switch in on them. (Firstly EV spreads are mentioned at the end of the first paragraph, also Bulky spin Cloyster isn't really a thing so its not worth mentioning and Flygon runs attack investment even on its Defensive sets) Grass Knot is also a viable option if Starmie's teammates struggle to break Seismitoad, a perpetual Stealth Rock setter, since Grass Knot nails it by leaving it in critical health, susceptible to being picked off by sweeping teammates such as Xurkitree and Raikou.(Seismitoad is like a B+ Pokemon on the viability rankings its not really worth running Grass Knot just for it) Recover allows Starmie to have longevity, allowing the Pokemon to consistently switch in to provide support for the team without leaving itself in fatal damage ready to be picked off by common revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Flygon.(Recover is fairly self explanatory and I do not think you need to explain it, Recover can of course heal you outside the range of attacks)Teleport and Flip Turn can be used too as they create momentum that allows Starmie's teammates to break holes through defensive cores whilst switching in safely.(Flip Turn is not a good option and I think there is very little merit to using it over Teleport. "as they create momentum that allows Starmie's teammates to break holes" The wording is pretty clunky, just get to the point)

(I think Toxic and Ice Beam deserve mentions as Toxic is able to cripple switch ins like Volcanion, Milotic, and Seismitoad but also mention the downsides for example not being able to hit Roserade or Toxicroak. Ice beam 2HKOs Decidueye after Stealth Rock, and has a chance to 2HKO Dhelmise, threatening these Ghost-types can be crucial in Starmie's ability to pull off a Rapid Spin)

Starmie fits well on hazard stacking teams that appreciate removal without their own being removed such as pairings with Roserade. (Starmie is certainly worth using on teams without Roserade) This allows late-game pressure to be created once Starmie's teammates hazards are down, allowing offensive switches from Starmie that would check the tiers hazard removers, forcing them out and chipping the opponents team.(This entire sentence is very fluffy and doesn't really tell me anything about good Starmie teammates.) This play-style is beneficial for late-game cleaners such as Dragon Dance Flygon or Choice Scarf Xurkitree which hit KO's that it usually wouldn't due to hazard chip on walls such as Seismitoad or Steelix.(This isn't really telling me how these Pokemon are effective Starmie teammates at all) Finally, reliable answers to First Impression Golisopod or the tier's plethora of hard hitting Electric-types are needed as teammates for Stamie like Roserade and Steelix in order to keep Starmie healthy until needed for hazard removal as this set is highly vulnerable to these.

For the teammates section I would like to see why Starmie is good on Hail teams with Arctozolt and Ninetales-A, reasons such as its Steel resistance and ability to pull of Rapid Spin. The First impression mention was good but don't mention it alongside electric checks. Durant should also be mentioned under First Impression, Steelix isn't a good Golisopod answer think of Pokemon that can actually swap into First Impression like Noivern and Talonflame. There are some Pokemon that Starmie struggles to do much of anything to like Celebi and Vileplume so mention answers to those. Mention wallbreakers that Teleport can give opportunity to.

Can you explain why you put 64 SpA on this set? For spreads that aren't just 252/4/252 we tend to want an explanation. Is there a specific mon you wanted to OHKO / 2HKO?

This can of course be thwarted by Ghost-types blocking the spin, however they cannot switch in freely due to threat of being nailed by Ice Beam coverage that 2HKOes Decidueye after Stealth Rocks aswell as Dhelmise.
since your set doesn't run ice beam this comment isn't accurate. i'd instead focus on how decidueye / dhelmise do block your spin, but psyshock does decent damage -- then mention in the 2nd paragraph how you can force chip onto them with an electric type partner like xurkitree / shadow ball raikou

Starmie is an excellent choice pairing with Hail due to its bulk and great typing that allows it to resist Steel and Fighting-type hits and freely Rapid Spin to remove hazards for teammates Ninetails-A , Arctozolt and Arctovish that heavily rely on hazard removal.
this comment is true -- hail does appreciate starmie removing hazards -- but hail isnt important enough for this to be the only thing you mention. talk about other mons that appreciate starmie keeping hazards off the field: Stealth Rock-weak mons like scarf darmanitan / specs ninetales-alola (which can be used outside of hail) and hazard-prone setup mons like cm raikou or sd cobalion

Wallbreaker teammates such as Toxitricity and Flygon benefit from a free switch-in from Teleport allowing them to capitalise on pre-emptive switches from Starmie's checks such as Sharpedo and threaten certain sets with an OHKO.
you'd really never be running teleport, tbh, since starmie should pretty much never drop scald (otherwise it loses to stealth rockers like steelix). Just like the Ice Beam mention earlier, avoid discussing the benefits of moves that aren't being recommended in your analysis.

implement these comments then i can look at it again, this isn't all i wanted to discuss but it is the most important.

Implemented these comments but kept Teleport comments as i think its key to the set if you have roserade checks already which naturally occur with starmie's team comp. (+ ziza approved of a slash for it)

Edit: All changes are made with a full Analysis of it, if i need to post it under a new thread lmk

[OVERVIEW]

Starmie has a variety of move coverage that is aided by its high base speed total that allows it to have great wall-breaking potential as well as adopting a support role through spinning. Starmie can outrun the vast majority of the metagame, giving it high wallbreaking potency by forcing in walls and blasting them with its Analytic-boosted super-effective coverage. (these first two sentences seem to overlap quite a bit so if youd merge them that'd be great) However, Starmie is vunerable (typo) to the tiers priority users such as First Impression Durant and Golisopod as they can bypass Starmie's excellent speed tier and force it out. Additionally, specially invested walls are hard to break without correct prediction such as Registeel, making Starmie's time harder when breaking. add something more about the rapid spin set here

This can of course be thwarted by Ghost-types blocking the spin such as Dhelmise and Decidueye, however they cannot switch in freely due to threat of being chipped down by Psyshock or being burnt from Scald. Psyshock pressures Roserade from coming into the field freely by threatening it with an OHKO due to its 64 Special Attack EVs, preventing hazards from going up. (talk about teleport here first) Toxic is also an option that cripples bulky Water-types such as Volcanion , Milotic and Seismitoad - chipping them down greatly for other cleaners late-game. This is not always reliable however as threats such as Roserade and Toxicroak can capitalise on a lack of Psyshock and absorb the Toxic freely to then force Starmie out. change the order of the move discussion according to moveset change, please keep a mention of psyshock with the 192/64/252 ev spread

Starmie is an excellent choice pairing with Hail due to its bulk and great typing that allows it to resist Steel and Fighting-type hits and freely Rapid Spin to remove hazards for teammates Ninetales-A, and Arctozolt and Arctovish that heavily rely on hazard removal. It can take on would-be offensive threats like Choice Scarf Heracross by resisting Close-Combat and forcing it out with Psyshock or using Teleport to maintain momentum. This however is not always reliable as Heracross can bring Knock Off coverage which can weaken Starmie from a correct prediction. Wallbreaker teammates such as Toxtricity and Flygon (flygon isn't really a breaker, maybe mention durantor pangoro instead) benefit from a free switch-in from Teleport allowing them to capitalise on pre-emptive switches from Starmie's checks such as Sharpedo Vileplume and threaten certain sets with an OHKO. Pokemon that appreciate Starmie's ability to get them in unscathed, such as Choice Scarf Darmanitan and Calm Mind Raikou need hazard removal in order to keep offensive threat throughout the game without being picked off by Choice Scarf or priority users .Noivern. (remove period) and Crobat are also viable team options paired with Starmie due to their resistance to First Impression Durant, and Grass-type resistance from threats such as Celebi freely setting up on Starmie.

Starmie can be opt to take an EV spread with 252 HP / 48 SpD / 208 Spe with a Timid nature, Heavy-Duty Boots as an item and Natural Cure as an ability to become a status sponging and spreading role with Toxic for pokemon such as Milotic and Volcanion. This EV spread allows Starmie to outrun Ninetales-A whilst maintaining maximum bulk to check Choice-Specs varients as well as Offensive Volcanion. However this isn't advised as teammates can naturally absorb status through their typing rather than having a delegated slot for Starmie.

**Bulky Water-types**: Bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Volcanion and Suicune can wall out Starmie, but cannot pre-emptively switch in due to Starmie having teleport on non-offensive sets. do mention that they must be careful of the offensive set

**Revenge Killers**: First Impression Durant, Golisopod and boosted Toxicroak Sucker punch can by pass Starmie's excellent speed tier and can force it out as well as Choice-Scarf Xurktree (typo) and Heracross (add period)

**Umbreon**: Umbreon can switch in on any of Starmie's moves and 2HKO with Foul Play or Wish the damage off.

However, Starmie is vulnerable to the tiers priority users such as First Impression Durant and Golisopod as they can bypass Starmie's excellent speed tier and force it out well spin starmie isn't vulnerable to a "priority" category, its weak to those to specifically, while LO starmie is just frail in general so fast stuff is dangerous. rephrase this sentence

Additionally, specially invested walls are hard to break without correct prediction such as Registeel, making Starmie's time harder when breaking. mention it isn't particularly strong itself - the thing that makes it good is coverage to break and analytic, and if it doesn't have that vs say av reun it does like 3 dmg. also specify that you're talking abt life orb

Defensive sets with Rapid Spin gives excellent support for teammates relying on hazard removal due to its high speed and ability to check and force out the majority of the Hazard setters in the tier. move this up, this sentence is out of place in the end of the overview

i would also mention how relying on analytic for dmg means you're forced to predict to break

Starmie is a consistent hazard removal option due to its favourable matchups into common hazard setters such as Cobalion and Steelix giving Starmie opportunity to Recover or Rapid Spin recovering is p intuitive if you need it, replace it w pivoting. This can of course be thwarted by Ghost-types blocking the spin such as Dhelmise and Decidueye, however they cannot switch in freely due to threat of being chipped down by Psyshock or being burnt from Scald. i don't think spinblockers are particularly relevant to starmie? if anything i would mention this in team options with stuff to take advantage of ghosts Teleport allows Starmie to gain momentum for the team as it can slow-pivot out against what it checks such as Cobalion and Steelix, giving wallbreaker teammates an opportunity to get in safely on an opponents switch. Toxic is also an option that cripples bulky Water-types such as Volcanion , Milotic and Seismitoad - chipping them down greatly for other cleaners late-game. This is not always reliable however as threats such as Roserade and Toxicroak can capitalise on a lack of Psyshock and absorb the Toxic freely to then force Starmie out. you can condense this by saying "toxic cripples water types like x, although Roserade and Toxicroak can then take advantage of Starmie" or similar. Psyshock can be used to pressure Roserade from coming into the field freely by investing 64 Special Attack EVs and threatening it with an OHKO , however this comprimises a little less bulk on Starmie. lack of bulk isn't very relevant, just say you don't really have the moveslots for it

Starmie is an excellent choice pairing with Hail due to its bulk and great typing that allows it to resist Steel and Fighting-type hits and freely Rapid Spin to remove hazards for teammates Ninetales-A and Arctozolt that heavily rely on hazard removal. this is too specific to be the opening sentence of a team options paragraph, mention something more generic at first and put this later as a cool side note. Starmie can also run a fully fledged offensive set with 252 SpA / 4 Def / 252 Spe EVs, Choice Specs as an item and with a Timid nature that maximises wallbreaking ability by its boosted Special Attack stat gaining unexpected OHKOes such as Hydro Pump on Cobalion after Stealth Rock chip, Decidueye, Dhelmise and Vileplume after Analytic boosted Ice Beam and a 2HKO on Milotic with Grass Knot once switching in. However, Choice-locking yourself is dangerous if the opponent has Protect Umbreon or Volcanion as they can absorb the majority of what Starmie throws out meaning that Teleport is a must for this set.

this is a good example of a very fluffy paragraph which I've seen a bit through this analysis. a lot of this stuff is intuitive and you could easily chop this up into something like "choice specs starmie improves its lacking raw power, for example (calc), however choice locking is very annoying and prevents it from exploiting coverage". we generally want the reader to have easy access to the relevant info so being brief is important.

also mention protect on lo helps vs impression

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Water-types**: Bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Volcanion and Suicune can wall out defensive Starmie, but cannot pre-emptively switch in due to Starmie having teleport . Offensive Starmie however can threaten Milotic and Suicune with a 2HKO with correct predictions, meaning these staples cannot switch in properly unless knowing Starmie's set. this good but they're not great checks so drop this bullet to last

**Revenge Killers**: First Impression Durant, Golisopod and boosted Toxicroak Sucker punch can by pass Starmie's excellent speed tier and can force it out as well as Choice-Scarf Xurkitree and Heracross. again its not really so much abt priority than starmies frailty so just reword this and mention naturally faster mons as well

**Umbreon**: Umbreon can switch in on any of Starmie's moves and 2HKO with Foul Play or Wish the damage off. umbreon is too specific here, id rather see this into a more general special spongies ie regi snorlax umby av reun etc.

[OVERVIEW]

Starmie's phenominal speed tiers makes it an exceptional wallbreaker due to its great super-effective coverage that forces foes out, making it the optional Analytic abuser. However Starmie has many functions like defensive Rapid Spin which is aided by its great defensive typing and match up into the common hazard setters in the tier allows excellent support for teammates relying on hazard removal . Furthermore it has the ability to pivot out on what it checks, forcing offensive switchins that Starmie's teammates can take advantage on. its counterintuitive to start by talking abt breaker starmie when the first set is spin, swap those around Starmie has to fear being picked off by First Impression users such as Durant and Golisopod from bipassing its speed tier. Moreover, naturally faster Pokémon like Raikou and Noivern can take advantage of Starmie's frailty without bulk investment and force it out. Additionally, specially invested walls are hard to break without correct prediction such as Registeel as Starmie without Analytic and Life Orb is rather weak, meaning you have to rely on predictions to generate any power. er, no. what i meant here is that breaker starmie relies on 2 things to break: its good coverage and analytic. however, it is possible to play around these: its coverage is moot against special sponges like av reun, regi, p2 etc, while analytic can be useless if the opponent positions themselves correctly through aggressive switching.

Psyshock can be used to pressure Roserade from coming into the field freely by investing 64 Special Attack EVs and threatening it with an OHKO , however Starmie usually doesn't have move slot space to run Psyshock. "Psyshock with 64 Special Attack EVs OHKOs Roserade, although Starmie doesn't usually have the space for it." or similar is less convoluted

Starmie can fit on any arch-type, but it's preferred are mostly Hazard stacking teams and offensive teams due to its ability to remove hazards ,but keep your own which assists hazard prone threats like Durant and Lucario that need hazard chip to connect crucial KOs . Starmie is an exeptional choice pairing with Hail due to its bulk and great typing that allows it to resist Steel and Fighting-type hits and freely Rapid Spin to remove hazards for teammates Ninetales-A and Arctozolt that heavily rely on hazard removal. Wallbreaker teammates such as Toxtricity and Durant benefit from a free switch-in from Teleport allowing them to capitalise on pre-emptive switches from Starmie's checks such as Vileplume and threaten certain sets with an OHKO. Pokemon that appreciate Starmie's ability to get them in unscathed, such as Choice Scarf Darmanitan and Calm Mind Raikou need hazard removal in order to keep offensive threat throughout the game without being picked off by Choice Scarf or priority users. Noivern and Crobat are also viable team options paired with Starmie due to their resistance to First Impression Durant, and Grass-type resistance from threats such as Celebi freely setting up on Starmie. With Starmie packing Rapid Spin, other teammates can free up a slot rather than having to run Defog.

[SET COMMENTS]

Starmie's expansive offensive movepool allows it to act as a powerful wallbreaker that can use super effective coverage and Analytic to break past usual Water-type checks. Hydro Pump is an option over Surf to maximize damage on neutral targets in exchange for accuracy, although missing is a concern due to Starmie's below-average bulk. Ice Beam hits Grass- and Dragon-types such as Celebi, Roserade, and Noivern. Grass Knot nails bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Seismitoad, and Suicune. Starmie can take advantage of forced switches to regain health with recover and continue firing off hits later. Rapid Spin is an option if a team desperately needs hazard removal, and it has the added benefit of potentially making Starmie a threatening cleaner.

Pokemon that deal with special blanket checks, like Umbreon and Porygon2, are appreciated. Pangoro, Obstagoon, and Heracross are good options. Finally, cleaners such as Sharpedo and Mimikyu can take advantage of the holes Starmie breaks into opponents' teams to sweep.

Starmie can also run a fully fledged offensive with Choice Specs which boosts its lacking raw power by gaining unexpected OHKOes such as Hydro Pump on Cobalion after Stealth Rock chip, Decidueye, Dhelmise and Vileplume after Analytic boosted Ice Beam . Thunderbolt is an option that hits Volcanion and revenge kills Golisopod, although it misses out on Seismitoad, Gastrodon and can be used to 2HKO Milotic. Psyshock provides ample neutral coverage and eases prediction, but has few relevant targets. However Choice locking is usually annoying as it stops Starmie exploiting its coverage. Life-Orb Starmie can opt to run Protect to prevent First Impression, and can OHKO Durant in return.

this is weirdly structured, should go like this
- first mention that lo has a few other options it can use
- tbolt can be used over grass knot
- psyshock
- protect

- then you can mention specs but its not great

Checks and Counters
===================

**Anything moving before than Starmie Faster threats and priority**: Due to Starmie's lack of bulk, anything faster than it has a high chance of dropping it such as Noivern and Raikou. Golisopod and Durant can both pick it off with First Impression and Toxicroak can fire off a boosted Sucker Punch to each KO respectively. this is only really true of life orb, spin starmie has alright bulk although you can still mention faster mons that beat it anyways

**SpDef Sponges*: Assualt-Vest Reuniclus, Snorlax and Umbreon can each take any of Starmie's moves and fire off their own to 2HKO, as well as Umbreon being able to heal off before so.

**Bulky Water-types**: Bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Volcanion and Suicune can wall out defensive Starmie, but cannot pre-emptively switch in due to Starmie having teleport . Offensive Starmie however can threaten Milotic and Suicune with a 2HKO with correct predictions, meaning these staples cannot switch in properly unless knowing Starmie's set. fat waters can usually check lo starmie, they just cant switch in because of analytic

Implemented all comments but changed the Psyshock mention in on offensive in OO to psychic since psyshock is only tailored for roserade so starmie can invest as little as possible to KO on defensive and psychic hits harder in general for bulky waters

Starmie can choose to run a specifically tailored offensive sets to aid breaking walls that teammates simply cannot or find it hard to specific coverage moves to hit certain targets. GP 1/2. [DC, 449990] Please proofread. You have many instances where moves are not capitalized and random spacing errors. Also, Smogon uses the Oxford comma, where a list of 3 has 2 commas (like Milotic, Volcanion, and Suicune).
