In any metagame, all the Pokémon that reside on it tend to have one or more standard sets which are used almost everytime. However, most of these Pokémon have great options that are left behind due to the consistency of the more common sets. This project is an invite to start digging for those buried pearls and maybe make some of them as common as their standard counterparts!

  • Each week, a RU Pokémon will be chosen for analysis. You have four days to post an original set for that Pokémon, alongside a nice explanation about what can this set do. after that phase, the community will vote on which set is the most creative and viable.
  • An "original set" stands for any set that doesn't have a main set analysis. When it comes to Pokémon that don't have analysis yet, you have to judge what is creative and uncommon enough to be worth a shot.
  • When thinking about what set you will nominate, keep in mind how viable and unique it is. Despite this project being about uniqueness, avoid posting gimmicky sets such as Choice Specs Machamp.
  • Your set should not be simply a standard set with a slight deviation either, such as White Herb over Rockium Z on Barbaracle.
  • Single move changes are generally okay as long as the new move does something specific that the normal set cannot do, such as breaking past a certain check or counter, or even assuming a new role.
Rules:
  • Feel free to be as creative as you want, just make sure that you can prove that your set stands apart from the standard sets, especially if yours does not appear much different from the standard ones. Make sure you set is viable as well. The Smogon Strategy Dex is your best friend here
  • Add an explanation to your post about what your innovation accomplishes, how it differentiates itself from standard sets, etc. It helps people, including the host and even yourself, to understand where your nomination is coming from. Not making one inconveniences others and is, quite frankly, lazy.
  • Adding formatting to your post in the correct areas also helps readers to understand how your set is special from the standard. Keep it under check, though; adding too much formatting doesn't help and just makes your post obnoxious to read.
  • Feel free and encouraged to post replays of your set in action; this will only help everyone (including yourself) understand whether/how your set can be game changing in some particular situations.
  • Do not edit your nomination post after voting phase has started.
  • You may reserve sets, but must have the nomination up in 24 hours of that reservation. Afterwards, others may take your set if you do not get up your own set before them.
  • During voting stage, please don't vote for your own set; if you think your own set is the best, just abstain from the vote.
  • Bandwagon votes are illegal and will not be counted.
  • Changes in votes are allowed, but must be done within the three day deadline and as follows;
Voting for beraldinho RyLon

sooo lets start in this new world of adventures! and for our first subject, we have the single most broken Pokémon of all time:

Cycle 1: Barbaracle
Barbaracle quickly skyrocketed as the premium setup sweeper of the tier due to it's access to Shell Smash, a powerful ability in Tough Claws and unrivaled STAB combination that can blow up almost anything on the tier with a Rockium Z and a boost. Boasting a plethora of coverage options and some support, what can we do with this beast?

banned sets: http://pokepast.es/5f1d5dc7abb9226a
deadline: 22/07

Barbaracle @ Life Orb
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Liquidation
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake

Offensive Rocks Barbaracle
A Barbaracle meant to function as an offensive rocker, pressuring much of the removal in the tier such as Gligar, Mandibuzz, Florges, and even Mega Blastoise with Life Orb boosted attacks. The most notable hazard control that this set loses to is Forretress. Simple STABs and Earthquake to dissuade Toxicroak and get some decent chip on Doublade.

252 Atk Life Orb Barbaracle Stone Edge vs. 56 HP / 0 Def Blastoise-Mega: 157-187 (50.1 - 59.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Life Orb Barbaracle Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mandibuzz: 257-304 (60.6 - 71.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Life Orb Tough Claws Barbaracle Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Gligar: 190-226 (56.8 - 67.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Life Orb Barbaracle Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Rotom-Mow: 173-204 (71.7 - 84.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Life Orb Tough Claws Barbaracle Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Florges: 278-329 (77.2 - 91.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Life Orb Barbaracle Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Toxicroak: 348-411 (113.3 - 133.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Life Orb Barbaracle Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Doublade: 117-138 (36.3 - 42.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 Atk Life Orb Tough Claws Barbaracle Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Forretress: 117-138 (33 - 38.9%) -- 7.5% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

White Herb Barbaracle

Barbaracle @ White Herb
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Shell Smash
- Stone Edge
- Liquidation
- Grass Knot

General idea
I really like Barbaracle because after a single Shell Smash it hits really hard; a major problem I think it is the decreased defences which usually leaves us prone to be revenge killed.
The addition of White Herb allows this pokemon to keep its nice bulk after a boost, thus allowing us to set up even twice if necessary (and two Shell Smashes are really game-changing).

252+ Atk Choice Band Tough Claws Barbaracle Low Kick (100 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Fluffy Bewear: 242-286 (63.3 - 74.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Tough Claws Barbaracle Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Doublade: 120-142 (37.2 - 44%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Barbaracle Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Doublade: 146-172 (45.3 - 53.4%) -- 34.4% chance to 2HKO

It basically 1HKO some mons and 2HKO all the metagame except Doublade (3HKO) (that is 2HKO by EQ) choosing the correct attack.

Barbarcale @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Liquidation
- Stone Edge
- Superpower / Shell Smash / Aerial Ace / Earthquake
- Switcheroo / Aerial Ace

Scarf Barbaracle:
Pretty cute revenge killer thats able to outspeed and heavily damage any unboosted offensive mon with a base speed stat equal or less than 125. Hits relatively hard on nuetral and SE targets thanks to its solid attack stat. Switcheroo is there to give Barb an option outside of STAB or coverage to aide it in incapacitating its checks. When paired with Shell Smash it also gives Barb the ability (when played perfectly) to setup and sweep on its choice locked switchins.

252 Atk Tough Claws Barbaracle Aerial Ace vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Virizion: 384-456 (118.8 - 141.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Barbaracle Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Toxicroak: 268-316 (87.2 - 102.9%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Tough Claws Barbaracle Liquidation vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zygarde-10%: 207-244 (83.1 - 97.9%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

FS/Ground-Z Barbaracle
Barbaracle @ Focus Sash/Groundium-Z
Ability: Tough Claws
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shell Smash
- Razor Shell
- Stone Edge
- Switcheroo/Taunt/Earthquake

I made this set to basically use a shell smash without punishment, and then hit a quick razor shell or stone edge. You could substitute the final slot and item for eq and groundium z to hit some mons but it wouldn't be ideal and fun as this is to use.

Barbarcale @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Liquidation
- Stone Edge
- Superpower / Shell Smash / Aerial Ace / Earthquake
- Switcheroo / Aerial Ace
I think that this is a typo because a Scarf Shell Smash is completely useless.

Barbaracle @ Rockium Z
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Shell Smash
- Stone Edge
- Liquidation
- Protect

Protect is a cool tech on Barbaracle that drops coverage in Low Kick or Aerial Ace, but allows it to be safe against it's most common countermeasure after setup: Golisopod's First Impression (And Comfey's Giga Drain. Try it out!), which wrecks it. This move makes Barbaracle completely safe against it, while also letting it scout moves that would heavily hurt it before setup, such as Noivern's Draco Meteor, Drapion's Earthquake or not choiced Escavalier's Megahorn and making mindgames vs Milotic harder for the Milotic user, since Barbaracle can be safe with Protect and scout a switch-in with Protect instead of burning it's Z-Move. Pretty cool set that wins games by itself when played properly.

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ru-757102739

Let's go for voting now; i'm not accepting nameless90's and xOliver's submission since there are no calcs or replays to backup Sash, Groundium Z or White Herb utility (And nameless90's is literally pointed out in the op lol).

Vote on your favorite Barbaracle!

El Paraflinch's CB Barbaracle

(although I still think that White Herb on Barbaracle is not a slight variation of the standard set because it can also prevent Barbaracle's Atk from being lowered by Intimidate and so on or defensces from being lowered after a boost. Next time I'll add more details to my description.)

It is just a variation. Anything that was shell smash + stabs and replaces the item or last moveslot should've been vetoed.

Alright, let's hop into cycle 2! First of all, I MUST let you guys aware of the amazing art T-Lukke made for this project! Go take a look on the OP, it is really THAT great!

Secondly, i must point that one-move changes are allowed, if there is enough evidence of what it can do compared to it's standard set, specially with replays and calcs. Does it lure something, like Z-Dream Eater Rotom? Does it avoid something, like Protect Barbaracle? Does it take a new role? If so, don't worry about submitting it!

So, the subject of this week is the newest addition to the tier. Go ham with him:

Cycle 2: Alolan Marowak!
Alolan Marowak is the newest Fire-type on RU after the meta shifts, like we didn't had enough Fire-types to care about! As fresh as it is, Alolan Marowak is a great addition to the tier's roster, having access to Stealth Rock, Swords Dance, a good exclusive Ghost-type STAB and nice coverage options, while also boasting Rock Head to improve it's insane capabilities as an wallbreaker! What can we do with him?

General idea
Swords Dance is really threatening on a pokemon like this that has a Choice Band without drawbacks (Thick Club), but I find myself forced to switch-out when the opponent switches onto a Water type.
Even at full health Marowak is prone to be revenge killed due to the lack of reliable recovery.

For example:
0 SpA Milotic Scald vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Marowak-Alola: 206-246 (63.7 - 76.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO,
but with the ban of Entei Milotic can use a more offensive spread like this one:
168 SpA Milotic Scald vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Marowak-Alola: 246-290 (76.1 - 89.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO, so you are dead with a single SR damage .

Toxic allows us to catch the majority of our revenge killers off-guard and to put a timer on them. You are still forced out, but you leave a poisoned (=weakened) pokemon behind you without wasting a turn.

EVs spread and item
44 Spe EVs are enough to reach 137 Spe points, one point higher than 0 Spe Registeel, so you can OHKO it with ease.
The remaining EVs are put in the HP for extra bulk and Atk + Adamant nature.
