Life of the party
[OVERVIEW]
Access to Chlorophyll and a boosting move in Swords Dance allows Sawsbuck to become a formidable sweeper under sun, outspeeding every unboosted threat in the PU metagame, including Choice Scarf users such as Primeape and Togedemaru, even with an Adamant nature. One of Sawsbuck's main perks over other sun-based sweepers is its access to Jump Kick, which enables it to easily whistle past Steel-types such as Aggron and Alolan Sandslash, threats that the likes of Leafeon otherwise struggle to deal with. STAB Double-Edge, boosted by Swords Dance and Normalium Z, also allows Sawsbuck to break through physically defensive walls like Weezing and Tangela. Unfortunately, despite Sawsbuck's solid Speed, it's still dependent on sun being active to function, as threats such as Jynx and Primeape outspeed it otherwise and OHKO it. Sawsbuck's defensive typing also gives it six weaknesses to common types including Fighting, Flying, and Ice, making it easy to revenge kill should sun not be up. Users of Mach Punch such as Hitmonchan and Gurdurr are especially threatening, as they always hit Sawsbuck first with a super effective move and punch through its mediocre defenses. Furthermore, setup is mandatory in order for Sawsbuck to power through foes, and finding time to set up is difficult given its several aforementioned weaknesses. The prevalence of bulky Calm Mind Oricorio-G is a major roadblock for Sawsbuck, as it possesses a resistance or immunity to all of its attacks. Lastly, Sawsbuck competes with Leafeon and other Chlorophyll users such as Shiftry for a teamslot, as these Pokemon possess their own useful traits such as high physical bulk and STAB priority in Sucker Punch, respectively.

Moves
========
Swords Dance gives Sawsbuck the functionality of a wallbreaker and setup sweeper. Double-Edge is a powerful STAB move capable of breaking through physically bulky Pokemon like Weezing, Mesprit, Musharna, and Tangela with Normalium Z and Swords Dance boosts. Horn Leech is Sawsbuck's Grass-type STAB move that hits Rock-, Water-, and Ground-types such as Regirock, Omastar, and Golurk while also recovering 50% of damage dealt. Jump Kick fills in the last slot for its ability to target Steel-types such as Aggron and Togedemaru.
Set Details
========
An Adamant nature increases Sawsbuck's offensive presence, and as it's already able to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame in sunny weather, a Jolly nature isn't necessary. Chlorophyll is important for Sawsbuck to function, doubling its Speed when under sun. Normalium Z gives Sawsbuck a one-time powerful attack, which lets it break through walls such as Weezing and defensive Mesprit and lacks Double-Edge's recoil. Life Orb is a viable option over Normalium Z for well-rounded damage output and the ability to run a Z-Move on another teammate, but the recoil caused by both this item and Double-Edge reduces Sawsbuck's longevity and can force it to use Horn Leech on crucial turns to avoid being KOed by recoil.
Usage Tips
========
Sawsbuck serves as both a wallbreaker and late-game sweeper. It can utilize Swords Dance and Normalium Z to punch holes through walls for other teammates, while at the same time it can put its impeccable Speed tier to use to clean up late-game. Since Sawsbuck's frailty and common weaknesses prevent it from reliably switching directly into attacks, bring it in safely through means of momentum from Pokemon like Mesprit and Volbeat, as they preserve Sawsbuck's limited longevity. Feel free to set up on Pokemon such as Audino, Altaria, and Clefairy lacking Thunder Wave, as due to their passive nature and poor matchup, Sawsbuck threatens to break through them. Sawsbuck can additionally pressure Pokemon like Lanturn and Silvally-Water, as while they sometimes carry Ice Beam, the prospect of Sawsbuck's Horn Leech is often enough to force a switch. An opponent may try using Protect with Pokemon like Audino and Regirock or otherwise try switching out in order to stall out sun turns, which makes for another opportunity to utilize Swords Dance. Save Sawsbuck's Z-Move for dire situations, as it's an important tool for breaking through walls as well as preventing Double-Edge's recoil. Sawsbuck will fail to break through Pokemon like Weezing and Tangela if they're healthy and Sawsbuck can no longer use its Z-Crystal. Using Breakneck Blitz can also help Sawsbuck win over matchups against powerful offensive threats such as Drampa and Alolan Exeggutor, which can otherwise survive an unboosted Double-Edge if kept relatively healthy.
Team Options
========
Having sun up is key for Sawsbuck to function, so setters such as Regirock and Volbeat are important for granting it a Chlorophyll boost; Regirock can provide additional support through Stealth Rock, while Volbeat can comfortably switch into priority moves such as Mach Punch. Mesprit and Liepard can also provide support through Thunder Wave, and all of these can pivot with U-turn or Explosion to bring Sawsbuck in safely. Wallbreakers such as Victreebel and Ninetales are valued on sun teams, as they can weaken physically bulky Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Gourgeist-XL. Victreebel can additionally absorb Toxic Spikes by switching in. These Pokemon appreciate Sawsbuck being able to power through specially bulky Pokemon such as Muk and Probopass. Other sun sweepers like Shiftry and Exeggutor appreciate Sawsbuck's ability to remove Steel-types with Jump Kick, as well as its ability to check miscellaneous threats to sun teams such as Drampa and Munchlax. Pokemon such as Mesprit and Lilligant can provide Healing Wish support, giving Sawsbuck a second chance if it was used early-game.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Wild Charge covers Oricorio-G, which is immune to or resists Sawsbuck's other moves. However, this move has limited use outside of this and is therefore hard to justify fitting into a moveslot. In a similar manner, Toxic cripples Gourgeist-XL by putting it on a permanent timer, but this offers little utility elsewhere. Sawsbuck can function independently from sun teams and utilize its other ability, Serene Grace. This ability, alongside the move Headbutt, can be used to cause an opposing Pokemon to flinch 60% of the time, which can be utilized with Thunder Wave to minimize the chances of a foe being able to attack. However, faster Pokemon such as Scyther, Swanna, and Choice Scarf Primeape are quite common and can revenge kill Sawsbuck provided they're not paralyzed. A Jolly nature allows Sawsbuck to outspeed Pokemon like Skuntank and Lilligant outside of sun, but the drawback in power is considerable. Return is an alternative STAB move to Double-Edge that doesn't deal recoil damage, but it is not recommended for similar reasons to running a Jolly nature, as Sawsbuck forfeits a lot of its attacking power. Most notably, Sawsbuck will fail to OHKO Weezing with a Swords Dance-boosted Breakneck Blitz.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Lack of Sun**: Without sun being active, Sawsbuck's merely decent Speed is exposed, letting threats such as Jynx, Primeape, and Swanna outspeed and OHKO it. Opposing weather setters such as Abomasnow and Aurorus can freely shift weather by switching in and can even outspeed Sawsbuck if holding a Choice Scarf, but they must be careful about taking an unwanted Jump Kick. Other weather sweepers such as Alolan Sandslash and Ludicolo can take advantage of either hail or rain being active and can use their STAB or coverage moves to exploit Sawsbuck's common weaknesses and poor defenses.
**Priority Moves**: Moves such as Kangaskhan's Fake Out and Spiritomb's Sucker Punch hit Sawsbuck first. Fake Out notably burns a turn of sun, while Spiritomb can also threaten Sawsbuck with Will-O-Wisp. Additionally, Abomasnow's Ice Shard and Hitmonchan's Mach Punch are super effective and severely dent Sawsbuck.
**Oricorio-G**: Oricorio-G is able to take a hit from Sawsbuck and OHKO it back with Supersonic Skystrike due to its immunties and resistances to its moves. Bulky variants of Calm Mind Oricorio-G are even able to switch into Sawsbuck after a Swords Dance boost. Oricorio-G lacking Flyinium Z are forced to risk a coinflip with Hurricane due to sun, however.
**Physically Defensive Walls**: Without any boosts or a lack of a Z-Crystal, Sawsbuck struggles to break through Pokemon like Weezing and Tangela, which threaten to do serious damage to it in return. Gourgeist-XL gets a special mention, as it's immune to Double-Edge and Jump Kick, takes negligible damage from Horn Leech, and threatens to burn Sawsbuck with Will-O-Wisp.
