Choice Scarf Tyranitar has a great surprise factor at picking off foes like Thundurus-T and Mold Breaker Excadrill that may stay in. Earthquake nails Tinkaton and Cobalion and is the strongest neutral attack against Quaquaval and Keldeo. Ice Punch provides coverage to hit Hydrapple and Zarude though this slot is flexible and can be alternative options like Stealth Rock or Fire Punch. Tera Rock delivers an additional boost to Tyranitars' Rock STAB while retaining the SpD boost under sand. For this reason, Tyranitar appreciates Pokemon like Scizor, Lokix, and Sand Rush Excadrill, which can threaten them with their priority. In the latter's case, its near-unrivaled speed under Sand gives it the jump on these Pokemon. Likewise, naturally fast Pokemon like Tornadus-T and Ogerpon can help patch Tyranitar's unreliability as a revenge killer. Ogerpon in particular, after Terastaliziation, can punish many set up sweepers like Dragon Dance Salamence and Swords Dance Zarude with Encore. Entry hazards from Skarmory and Cobalion can help wear down foes into range of Tyranitar's attacks, both are also great checks to Scizor, Lokix, and the Ogerpon formes. While Tyranitar has an amazing typing, this set can struggle to utilize it so bulky pivots like Slowking, Tinkaton, and Toxapex are necessary to help answer Pokemon like Heatran, Tornadus-T, and Latios. Slowking and Tinkaton are also reliable answers to Keldeo and Quaquaval who fear little from Tyranitar.
