Scrafty mainly plays as a sturdy check to special attackers like Salazzle, Rotom, and non-Growth Vileplume, but it can also act as a great wincon once opposing Fairy- and Fighting-types are removed. Thanks to its great bulk, decent defensive typing, semi-reliable recovery, and status resilience due to Rest + Shed Skin, Scrafty finds numerous opportunities to set up with Bulk Up in front of passive Pokemon like Curse Snorlax, Gastrodon, Sableye, and Coalossal, thus forcing them out. Early- and mid-game, Scrafty should use Knock Off as much as possible to cripple its checks by removing their item. Drain Punch is a secondary STAB move that has the added benefit of recovering some health. This, in combination with the recovery from Leftovers, helps alleviate its dependency on Rest to stay healthy, giving the opponent less free turns to react. The investment in Speed allows Scrafty to outpace Adamant Rhydon, making it easier for it to win the duel. Alternatively, a spread of 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD can be used if Scrafty's teammates can handle Rhydon well enough and if the extra bulk is wanted.
Special attackers like Salazzle, Vanilluxe, Ninetales, Alolan Raichu, and Indeedee-M appreciate Scrafty's ability to safely switch into Snorlax and easily beat it one-on-one. Scrafty is shut down by Fairy-types, especially Aromatisse, which can OHKO it with Moonblast and recover chip damage with Wish, so pair it with Pokemon that threatens them like Vileplume, Salazzle, and Copperajah. Scrafty has especially good synergy with Salazzle, since the former can handle most of the latter checks, such as Snorlax, Gastrodon, and Coalossal. Because Scrafty is so slow, it can be easily revenge killed by one of the numerous Fighting-types in the tier, such as Passimian, Virizion, or Bewear; pairing it with a Pokemon like Xatu, Vileplume, Choice Scarf Indeedee-M, or Alolan Raichu that can deal with them can prove useful.
