Skarmory is one of the strongest Spikes setters in SS OU. It matches up very well against common entry hazard removers like Corviknight, Mandibuzz, and Excadrill, while bringing a load of defensive utility to the table through checking Pokemon like Rillaboom. Body Press is considered mandatory, allowing Skarmory to consistently threaten Pokemon like Excadrill, Tyranitar, and Ferrothorn. Taunt is typically preferred in Skarmory's last moveslot, preventing Corviknight from removing Skarmory's Spikes with Defog and recovering HP with Roost. Brave Bird is a solid alternative however that can be run to put more immediate pressure on Rillaboom. Toxic is also an option to cripple Pokemon like Rotom-H, Dragapult, and Zeraora. Rocky Helmet is generally preferred as an item to passively wear down Pokemon like Excadrill, but Shed Shell can be run to avoid being trapped by Magnet Pull Magnezone. A Bold nature is generally preferred to minimize confusion and Foul Play damage, but an Impish nature should be run with Brave Bird to not hamper its damage output.
Pokemon that struggle with Excadrill and Rillaboom benefit greatly from Skarmory's presence. Clefable, Hatterene, and Crawdaunt are some good examples. Skarmory is an incredible Spikes setter, and Pokemon such as Volcarona, Calm Mind Clefable and Hatterene, and Zeraora can capitalize off Spikes very handily, as they tend to force a large amount of switches. Skarmory will often invite Electric-type wallbreakers like Zeraora, Magnezone, and Rotom-H. As such, checks to those Pokemon like Gastrodon, Amoonguss, Hippowdon, and Rhyperior are very important teammates to keep them in check. Dragapult and Volcarona are 2 Pokemon that Skarmory will often allow to switch in; checks to them like Clefable, Blissey, Toxapex, and Gastrodon are good teammates as a result.
