Ubers Smeargle

QC: Cynara, Serial EKiller, Nayrz
GP: Fireflame479, The Dutch Plumberjack

[OVERVIEW]

* With access to almost all moves in the game, Smeargle is considered one of the most versatile utility lead Pokemon.
* Access to all entry hazards such as Stealth Rock, Sticky Web, and Toxic Spikes makes Smeargle one of the best lead Pokemon in the tier.
* A decent Speed tier allows Smeargle to set up hazards early-game against slower Pokemon such as defensive Primal Groudon and defensive Necrozma-DM.
* It can also provide massive team support with entry hazard removal such as Rapid Spin and cripple opposing Pokemon with status-inducing moves such as Spore and Nuzzle.
* Hyper offensive teams benefit heavily from Smeargle, as hazards and status-inducing moves allow such teams to perform their roles with ease.
* However, due to its lackluster offensive and defensive stats, Smeargle's role is limited to a suicide lead.
* Once Focus Sash is broken, Smeargle is almost useless.
* Outside of Nuzzle, Smeargle's reliance on status moves means that it can easily get shut down by Taunt users and hazard removers and struggles against common leads likes Excadrill, Cloyster, Magic Bounce users, and Mega Gengar.
* Smeargle will struggle against stall teams that depend on Magic Bounce, which can render it useless for the majority of the battle.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Sticky Web is the premier utility move for Smeargle, allowing its otherwise slower teammates to outpace faster grounded Pokemon.
* Nuzzles allows Smeargle to cripple non-Ground-type Pokemon with paralysis and avoid being crippled by fast Taunt leads like Yveltal and Deoxys-S.
* Taunt prevents opposing Pokemon from easily setting up on Smeargle.
* Whirlwind is useful against setup Pokemon like Substitute + Dragon Dance Mega Salamence and Zygarde, which would otherwise be problematic for a Sticky Web-oriented team.
* Toxic Thread cripples opposing non-Poison-type Pokemon by dropping their Speed and inducing poison, which can help Smeargle avoid being shut down by Ground-types that are immune to Nuzzle and faster Taunt users.

Set Details
========

* A Jolly nature with maximum Speed investment is mandatory for Smeargle to be as fast as it can be to effectively set up entry hazards.
* Maximum HP investment increases Smeargle's bulk. However, it's essentially useless due to Smeargle's frailty and vulnerability of getting OHKOed or 2HKOed by many Pokemon in the tier.
* Focus Sash guarantees Smeargle the opportunity to use one of its utility moves before fainting.
* Own Tempo prevents Smeargle from getting confused, which risks breaking its own Focus Sash.

Usage Tips
========

* Smeargle's only role is a suicide lead that helps its teammates by setting up Sticky Web.
* Generally, it is ideal for Smeargle to set up Sticky Web first and then deal with the opposing lead Pokemon. However, this is solely based on lead matchup. It is important to analyze the opposing lead Pokemon in determining the optimal play for Smeargle. For example, if the opposing lead Pokemon knows Taunt, Smeargle should use Nuzzle first to cripple the foe and then set up Sticky Web. If the opposing lead Pokemon has moves with secondary effects, such as flinch or burn, it is important to realize that those factors risk preventing Smeargle from setting Sticky Web.
* Smeargle should only be led if the opposing team does not have a lead that can directly deal with it. For example, opposing lead Excadrill can be problematic, as it is immune to Nuzzle and Toxic Thread, can spin Sticky Web away, and can break Smeargle's Focus Sash.
* Mega Gengar poses as a threat to Smeargle, as it can either use Taunt to prevent Sticky Web or use Substitute to prevent being paralyzed. Therefore, Smeargle must be used with the right predictions.
* If the opposing lead Pokemon is a setup user, Smeargle can get Sticky Web up first and then phaze it with Whirlwind.
* Against lead hazard removers, Smeargle can use Toxic Thread to lower their Speed and get Sticky Web set up while the foe is poisoned. This will pressure the foe into staying in against Smeargle to remove hazards, but it will lose out from poison in the long run.
* If Smeargle cannot set up Sticky Web due to lead matchup, it can help cripple the opposing lead Pokemon with its status moves.

Team Options
========

* Strong wallbreakers such as Swords Dance Mega Lucario, Swords Dance Rayquaza, and Calm Mind Primal Kyogre, which would otherwise struggle against offensive teams, can take advantage of Sticky Web by setting up.
* Since Smeargle's primary role is to set up Sticky Web, an offensive Stealth Rock setter like Primal Groudon and Necrozma-DM ensures that the entry hazard can be set up more than once, as opposing bulky offense and balance teams will attempt to get rid of Sticky Web. This means that the opposing team's defensive core will be vulnerable to the offensive pressure of trying to remove Sticky Web and will concede with either Stealth Rock, Sticky Web, or both for the duration of the battle.
* Ultra Necrozma benefits from Sticky Web, as it can outspeed threats like Mega Gengar. Its pre-Ultra Burst form can be either Necrozma-DM or Necrozma-DW depending on team composition. Necrozma-DM is able to be an offensive threat with Swords Dance without transforming into Ultra Necrozma, and Necrozma-DW can spinblock prior to transforming.
* Offensive Fairy-types like Choice Specs Xerneas can deal with crippled Yveltal, Mega Salamence, and Marshadow. Arceus-Fairy can set up with Calm Mind and provides another option for a Stealth Rock setter.
* Mega Diancie is a great teammate for Smeargle, as Magic Bounce covers most Taunt leads for Smeargle. Mega Diancie also has access to Stealth Rock and Explosion to complement Smeargle's Sticky Web and punch a hole into offensive teams early.
* Smeargle can cripple opposing threats with Nuzzle, which can slow down faster threats like Choice Scarf Yvetal, Geomancy Xerneas, Marshadow, and Deoxys-A that teammates can check or counter more easily.
* Taunt users like Yveltal can prevent opposing teams from potentially undoing Smeargle's entry hazards with Defog.
* On the other hand, Ghost-types like Marshadow and Mega Gengar can block Rapid Spin from opposing Excadrill and Smeargle.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Rapid Spin gives Smeargle the option to remove entry hazards, though this will risk Smeargle's Focus Sash breaking if it is still intact.
* Glare can be an alternative to Nuzzle but is shut down by Taunt.
* Spore is another status-inducing move Smeargle can use to cripple an opposing Pokemon, allowing its teammates to easily set up while the foe is asleep.
* Once Smeargle's HP is reduced to the bare minimum, Endeavor can cripple opposing threats and walls for its teammates to revenge kill.* Magic Coat can help Smeargle against opposing Taunt, entry hazard setting, and status infliction.
* Toxic Spikes can used as an alternative entry hazard, though Stick Web and Stealth Rock are more valuable to hyper offensive playstyles.
* Memento can be used to cripple opposing offensive threats once Smeargle uses up its Focus Sash.
* Stealth Rock can be an alternative to Sticky Web, as it damages Flying-types such as Yveltal and Ho-Oh.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Taunt**: Taunt is Smeargle's worst nightmare in the lead matchup and can shut it down. However, opposing Taunt users like Yveltal and Mega Gengar can be susceptible to Nuzzle.

**Rapid Spin Users**: Excadrill can undo Smeargle's Sticky Web with Rapid Spin and is immune to Nuzzle and Toxic Thread. Cloyster can also fulfill the same role but must be wary of Nuzzle and Toxic Thread.

**Substitute Sweepers**: Substitute sweepers such as Arceus-Ground and Zygarde cannot be touched by Nuzzle and are very threatening if Smeargle lacks Whirlwind. Both can set up with their respective moves and can be problematic for the rest of the team to deal with.

**Magic Bounce**: Magic Bounce users such as Mega-Sableye and Mega Diancie can easily deflect the majority of Smeargle's moveset. However, Nuzzle can easily cripple them.

**Flying-types and Levitate Users**: Flying-types like Yveltal and Mega Salamence and Levitate users like Giratina-O are immune to Smeargle's Sticky Web. Mega Salamence threatens Sticky Web teams with the Dragon Dance + Refresh set and is one of the most effective Defoggers.

**Faster Pokemon**: Smeargle's base 75 Speed stat means that it is vulnerable to faster Pokemon like Yveltal and Excadrill that can pressure it with status or hazard removal. However, Focus Sash guarantees that Smeargle sets up at least one entry hazard.

I know this might not be a big difference, but when you run no physical moves then it would be better to slash Timid first and have 0 atk iv to minimize the damage of Foul Play. Jolly also weakens the damage done by Nuzzle.

Off the top of my head, the only prominent Foul Play user in Ubers is Yveltal. Personally I don't think it makes any difference if it's Jolly or Timid with 0 Atk IVs because 1) Smeargle is 99% gonna be leading, so why use Foul Play in the first place, and 2) Nuzzle's 100% paralysis chance is what Smeargle relies on to slow down threats to its teammates and break potential Sashes. Its a good point you bring up, but because Smeargle's lack of offense, the nature's nor ivs really matter in the end.

Stealth Rock should not be in moves on Smeargle, dedicating double hazards on sticky web is not very effective as smeargle will be able to get webs up at best against most teams, Sticky web teams want to dedicate stealth rock on a offensive Pokemon with some longevity such as Primal Groudon that is able to set Stealth Rock more than once throughout a game, since webs forces Bulky offense / Balance teams to defog the webs away meaning their defensive back bone folds to the offensive pressure trying to remove webs and concedes with stealth rock on their side in the long run or both. Smeargle also cannot beat Mega Sableye teams such as stall and other structures you absolutely want to have rocks up against, effectively making it a wasted slot.

move 3: Taunt
move 4: Whirlwind / Toxic Thread
item: Focus Sash
ability: Own Tempo
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Hp / 4 Atk / 252 Spe

Please implement the above set and moves and warp the analysis around them, then I will look at it a later point for a qc check.

Toxic Thread is more useful than spore due to the speed drop and poison status which wears down targets and hits grounds. Whirlwind is useful against anti targets such as Sub dd mence / Zygarde which it would otherwise be problematic for a webs team.

any questions/concerns, you can find us in #analysis on the ubers discord or don't hesitate send me a pm.

Usage Tips

in usage tips, it's worth mentioning how nuzzle / toxic thread can operate, Nuzzle paralyses Pokemon that would otherwise be troublesome for Sticky web teams such as Yveltal and it's worth mentioning it can benefit slower team team mates, if it's utilised against these Pokemon.

Team options:

Team options is looking a bit weak.

* Sweepers like Rock Polish Necrozma-DM, Dual Dance Primal Groundon,
I don't think these two are the most optimal for sticky web teams; Rock Polish Don or Rock Polish Dusk Mane doesn't really benefit from the speed drop, Swords Dance Primal Groudon is good however, it can also fulfill the stealth rock role. Same goes for dusk mane, Ultra Necrozma is more welcomed on Sticky Web due to it's superior wall-breaking ability and gets the jump on Mega Gengar, etc that would usually outspeed it. Dusk Mane itself is better off running 3 attacks SD on webs or 2 attacks + Moonlight.

Fairies like Choice Specs or Geomancy Xerneas to deal with the Yveltal / Mega Salamence / Marshadow Options and provide an additional breaker are also worth mentioning in team options, in a similar vain, Arceus Fairy is worth mentioning as it can perform well with Calm Mind or on the occasion, Stealth Rock.

Other strong breakers like Mega Lucario, SD Rayquaza and Primal Kyogre (CM) are also worth mentioning as these are team options that would usually struggle vs offense teams.

Checks and Counters

Arceus ground should get a mention as it's the only support Arceus that cannot be touch by Nuzzle and is one of the main reason to run Toxic Thread and Sub SD set is very threatening if lacking Whirlwind. Sub DD Zygarde also poses a similar issue and also outspeeds Smeargle before a Dragon Dance if it isnt in complete forme.

Mega Salamence should get a separate mention Above Arceus Ground, it threatens Sticky web teams considerably both with the occasional Sub DD / DD Refresh and is one of the most effective flying defoggers.

Mention Excadrill just below Taunt in C&C.

please implement my check in as much detail as possible.

* With access to almost all moves in the game, Smeargle is considered one of the most versatile Pokemon.
* Due to its lackluster offensive and defensive stats, Smeargle's role is limited to suicide lead.
Reword so that these points don't contradict each other.

* Unless it is carrying Magic Coat, Smeargle's reliance on status moves means that it can easily get shut down by Taunt.
Since Magic Coat is OO, make this point about Nuzzle instead. Expand this point to include many other common leads Smeargle struggles with, such as Excadrill, Cloyster, Magic Bounce, Mega Gengar, etc.

* Although Smeargle has pitiful stats, Nuzzles allows it to crippled non-Ground type Pokemon with paralysis and avoids Smeargle from being crippled by fast Taunt leads like Yveltal and Deoxys-S.
* Toxic Thread cripples opposing Pokemon by dropping their speed and induce poison status, which wears down threats and hits Pokemon that Nuzzle otherwise cannot.
Elaborate either in Moves or in Usage tips how these moves allow Smeargle to get up webs vs Taunt users/faster Ground types.

Add tips on what to do in bad lead matchups (eg Excadril, Cloyster, Mega Gengar, Defog or Substitute Groundceus depending on Smeargle's 4th move) to Usage tips. Should something else lead instead? How do you play around Excadril and Cloyser if you have a spinblocker?

Add Mega Diancie to Team Options. Magic Bounce covers most Taunt leads for Smeargle, which can allow it to drop Nuzzle, and Diancie also has access to Rocks + Explosion to complement Smeargle's webs.

Add teammates that can deal with Substitute boosters to Team Options, if Smeargle is running Toxic Thread.

Add Cloyster to the point about Excadrill in Checks and Counters. Mention that Rapid Spin can be blocked.

**Arceus-Ground**: It is the only support Arceus that cannot be touch by Nuzzle and is one reason to run Toxic Thread. The Substitute Swords Dance set is very threatening if lacking Whirlwind. Substitute Dragon Dance Zygarde also poses a similar issue and also outspeeds Smeargle before a Dragon Dance if it is not in its 100% forme.
Either make a separate point for Sub DD Zygarde, or a separate point for boosting sweepers with Substitute.

**Mega Salamence**: Mega Salamence threatens Sticky web teams with the occasional Dragon Dance, Refresh sets and is one of the most effective flying defoggers.
**Flying-types and Levitate Users**: Flying-type users like Yveltal and Mega Salamence, and Levitate users like Giratina-O are immune to Smeargle's Sticky Web. They can also potentially remove Sticky Web and other hazards with Defog.
Either merge these two points together, or remove Mega Salamence from the second.

**Stall Teams**: Smeargle cannot apply offensive pressure against Stall, and stall teams with Magic Bounce and render Smeargle useless.
Remove. Mega Sableye is already mentioned, and Smeargle's role isn't to apply offensive pressure, but to set Webs so its teammates can.

Implemented. Thank you! Is this part of QC, since you are part of the QC team?

* Although useless the majority of the time, Own Tempo is the best for Smeargle.
why?
* Whirlwind allows Smeargle to faze out Pokemon that are Substitute Sweepers immune to Nuzzle such as Arceus-Ground and Zygarde.
*Whirlwind should be used to faze out Pokemon behind a substitute, or have already set up, assuming that Focus Sash is still intact.
repetitive
* It can also be used in late-game situations against set-up Pokemon like Xerneas, Arceus, and Mega Salamence. However, Focus Sash should be intact to prevent such sweeps.
Smeargle should never really be alive at this point...

The general idea I'm getting here is that Usage Tips is duplicating the descriptions in Moves too often, and sometimes duplicating earlier points made. I'd like to see a thorough review of this section going over better suited details, in-depth views on difficult lead matchups and general proofreading before I stamp it. Smeargle is mostly a simple mon but matchups and move selection is an important aspect to it - any easier bits in other sections of the analysis should therefore come with a good amount of information regarding these sections.

No need to mention that Moody is banned as its assumed when talking about Ubers. I'm fine with the explanation otherwise.

* If the opposing lead Pokemon is a non-ground type, Smeargle should use Nuzzle to cripple it and set up Sticky Web during the next turn for easier teammate sweeps.
This may come across wrong if taken literally. Against Substitute Gengar its a guess if it will Taunt or Substitute, meaning Smeargle also has to get a prediction right. Yveltal can lead and Dark Pulse to flinch past web setting, or potentially Taunt, so there is a play to evaluate there too. Defog Ho-Oh can lead and chance a Sacred Fire burn, and if Smeargle Nuzzles turn 1 then it can die without webs going up at all. I'd cover these matchups appropriately. Generally setting webs and THEN dealing with the opposing mon is ideal (assuming Smeargle is carrying the move that stops said anti-lead going crazy), but this is entirely down to matchup.

When talking about Ultra Necrozma in Team Options, go over that this can come from either Dawn or Dusk. Dawn provides spinblocking utility and Ultra in one slot (it runs the same SD set as Dusk in this instance), while Dusk comes with a superior forme to setup in or be a threat without necessarily turning to Ultra.

* Roar can allow Smeargle to faze phase opposing set-up setup Pokemon, though this can be is only effective if Focus Sash is intact.
* Once Smeargle's HP is reduced to the bare minimum, Endeavor can cripple opposing threats and walls for its teammates to revenge kill.
* Magic Coat can help Smeargle against opposing Taunt, entry hazard setting, and status infliction.
* Toxic Spikes can used as an alternative entry hazard, though Stick Web and Stealth Rock are more valuable as for what they bring for to hyper offensive playstyles.
* Memento can be used to cripple opposing offensive threats once Smeargle uses up its Focus Sash.
* Stealth Rocks Rock can be an alternative to Sticky Web, as it flying times damages Flying-types such as Yveltal and Ho-Oh.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Taunt**: Taunt is Smeargle's worst nightmare in the lead matchup,(RC) which and can shut it down Smeargle. However, opposing Taunt users (give examples) can be susceptible to Nuzzle.

**Excadrill Rapid Spin Users**: Excadrill can undo Smeargle's Sticky Web with Rapid Spin and is immune to Nuzzle and Toxic Thread. Cloyster can also fulfill the same role,(RC) but must be wary of Nuzzle and Toxic Thread. Ghost types such as Mega Gengar and Giratina-O can potentially block Rapid Spin from these Pokemon. (unrelated to Smeargle's matchup against them)

**Substitute Sweepers**: Substitute sweepers such as Arceus-Ground and Zygarde cannot be touch touched by Nuzzle and are very threatening if Smeargle is lacking lacks Whirlwind. Both can setup set up with their respective moves and can be problematic for the rest of the team to deal with.

**Magic Bounce**: Magic Bounce users such as Mega-(RH)Sableye and Mega Diancie can easily deflect the majority of Smeargle's moveset. However, Nuzzle can easily cripple them.

**Flying-types and Levitate Users**: Flying-types users like Yveltal and Mega Salamence,(RC) and Levitate users like Giratina-O are immune to Smeargle's Sticky Web. Mega Salamence threatens Sticky Web teams with the occasional Dragon Dance, Refresh sets Dragon Dance + Refresh set and is one of the most effective flying Defoggers.

**Faster Pokemon**: Smeargle's base 75 base Speed stat means that it is vulnerable to faster Pokemon (examples) that can pressure it with status or hazard removal. With However,(AC) Focus Sash however, it will guarantee guarantees that Smeargle to sets up at least one entry hazard.

[OVERVIEW]

* With access to almost all moves in the game, Smeargle is considered one of the most versatile utility lead Pokemon.
* Access to all entry hazard moves such as Stealth Rock, Sticky Web, and Toxic Spikes makes Smeargle one of the best lead Pokemon in the tier.
* Due to its lackluster offensive and defensive stats, Smeargle's role is limited to a suicide lead.
* Once Focus Sash is broken, Smeargle is almost useless.
* Outside of Nuzzle, Smeargle's reliance on status moves means that it can easily get shut down by Taunt and hazard-removal users and struggles against common leads likes Excadrill, Cloyster, Magic Bounce users, and Mega Gengar.
* Smeargle will struggle against stall teams that depend on Magic Bounce, which can render it useless for the majority of the battle.

Moves
========

* Toxic Thread cripples opposing non-Poison-type Pokemon by dropping their Speed and induce poison, which can help Smeargle avoid being shut down by Ground-types that are immune to Nuzzle and faster Taunt users.
* Whirlwind is useful against setup Pokemon like Substitute + Dragon Dance Mega Salamence and Zygarde, which would otherwise be problematic for a Sticky Web-oriented team.

Set Details
========

* Own Tempo is the best ability for Smeargle, as Technician does not aid it. Own Tempo prevents Smeargle from getting confused, which risks breaking its own Focus Sash.

Usage Tips
========

* Smeargle's only role is a suicide lead that helps its teammates by setting up Sticky Web.
* Generally, it is ideal for Smeargle to set up Sticky Web first, then deal with the opposing lead Pokemon.
* Opposing leads such as Excadrill can be problematic, as it is immune to Nuzzle and Toxic Thread, can Rapid Spin Sticky Web, and can break its Focus Sash. Therefore, Smeargle should only be led if the opposing team does not have a lead that can directly deal with Smeargle.
* Mega Gengar poses as a threat to Smeargle, as it can either use Taunt to prevent Sticky Web or use Substitute to prevent being paralyzed. Therefore, Smeargle must be used with the right predictions.
* If the opposing lead Pokemon is a setup user, Smeargle can get Sticky Web up first and then phaze them with Whirlwind.

========

* Strong wallbreakers such as Swords Dance Mega Lucario, Swords Dance Rayquaza, and Calm Mind Primal Kyogre, which would otherwise struggle against offensive teams, can take advantage of Sticky Web by setting up.
* Since Smeargle's primary role is to set up Sticky Web, a offensive Stealth Rock setter like Primal Groudon and Necrozma-DM ensure that the entry hazard can be set up more than once, as opposing bulky offense and balance teams will attempt to get rid of Sticky Web.

=============

* Rapid Spin gives Smeargle the option to remove entry hazards, though this will risk Smeargle's Focus Sash breaking if it is still intact.
* Glare can be an alternative to Nuzzle but is shut down by Taunt.
* Spore is another status-inducing move Smeargle can use to cripple an opposing Pokemon, allowing its teammates to easily set up on it while asleep.
* Roar can allow Smeargle to phase opposing setup Pokemon, though this is only effective if Focus Sash is intact.

I know this is a little late since this is already on GP and all, but is there any reason to talk about Roar on Other Options? Whirlwind is already on the main set and the only difference between those is that Roar is sound based, making Soundproof Pokémon immune to it (not that there any viable Pokémon with it, but it still is redundant to include both on the analisys).
