SMOGON CHARITY BOWL
(Thanks to brightobject for the logo!)

Systemic racism and police violence have destroyed innumerable lives and communities. While the world faces a global pandemic, the United States is dealing with a pandemic of its own, one born out of a long history of racist policing that has led to overincarceration, the decay of civil rights and even outright murder. Smogon stands with the protesters across the world who are rising up against the senseless brutality that has led to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless others.

To that end, Smogon is hosting its first ever Charity Bowl, a live tournament to take place on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at 12 PM EST (GMT -4). The Smogon Charity Bowl will be raising funds for the following organizations:
  • NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund
  • Black Lives Matter Global Network
  • The Bail Project
  • The National Police Accountability Project
You can join us for this tournament as a participant, or follow the action live on our Twitch streams at twitch.tv/smogonu. Smogon will be raising money via donations throughout the event, and will contribute an additional $100 in the winner’s name. We are encouraging all participants and spectators to stand with us against police violence and injustice by giving today at https://secure.actblue.com/donate/smogon.

FORMAT

The Smogon Charity Bowl will consist of two parts: a live tournament qualifier, immediately followed by seeded best-of-three playoffs for the top 8. The format will be Sword & Shield OU.

  • All tiers are based on Smogon tiers. The current status of the appropriate standard ladder will function as the prevailing tier list. If you have any question about whether a particular Pokemon is banned or not in any particular tier, reference the banlist of the appropriate ladder on PS! with '/tier'. This is not confusing. There will be no exceptions.
  • Species Clause: A player cannot have two (2) of the same species of Pokemon on their team, based on National Pokedex number. For example, a player cannot have two Koffing on their team.
  • Sleep Clause: A player cannot put two or more different opposing Pokemon to sleep using attacks that induce sleep to opposing Pokemon.
  • Evasion Clause: A player cannot increase their Pokemon's evasion stat with a move that specifically increases evasion. Items or indirect boosts do not break this clause.
  • OHKO Clause: A player cannot use a move that has a chance of instantly KOing an opposing Pokemon. For example, Horn Drill or Sheer Cold are illegal moves.
  • Timer Clause: If a player exhausts the timer, that player loses. SmogTours staff will not turn the timer off in any circumstance.
  • Self-KO Clause: If a player uses a recoil move to cause a draw, that player wins. If a player uses Explosion, Selfdestruct, Destiny Bond, or Perish Song to cause a draw, that player loses. If a draw would be caused by a hold item or ability that causes recoil to the opponent, the player that controls the Pokémon with the hold item or ability wins. (This clause helps determine the winner of what would be called a tie in DPP. Later generations do not apply this clause, because their cartridge mechanics will prevent ties from happening.)
  • Endless Battle Clause: A player cannot use a combination of items / moves / abilities to force a game that will never end (example: Recycle / Leppa Berry / Heal Pulse, etc).
  • Moody Clause: A player can not use the ability Moody.

PRIZES

In addition to the $100 contribution made in their name, the winner will also receive a prize banner to appear on their Smogon account. In addition, the following Pokemon Showdown prizes are being offered:
  • A custom avatar.
  • The ability to recolor your PS username.
  • The ability to claim an unused PS username.
The winner will be able to choose two of the above options; the remaining option will be granted to the runner-up.

The $100 contribution will be distributed to the following organizations:
  • NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund
  • Black Lives Matter Global Network
  • The Bail Project
  • The National Police Accountability Project
The winner can determine how the funds are distributed (for example, they could request that all of the prize money go to one particular organization, or to split it between two of the four, etc.). If no preference is provided, all four charities will receive equal contributions.

The prize banner will appear under the user’s custom title and state that they are the winner of the Smogon Charity Bowl.

The custom PS avatar must meet all ordinary rules for custom avatars, and is subject to Zarel’s approval.

The PS name recolor will allow you to change your PS username color to the color of another account that you own.

Regarding claiming an unused PS username, only names that have not been used for four or more years are eligible to be claimed.

Congrats to suapah for winning through a brutal 7+ hour tournament and emerging victorious, and to Ewin for the fantastic run as well! I've got plenty I want to say here but need to go put a kiddo to bed, so I'll just say this for now: we managed to raise $9,256 this tournament, which completely blows my expectations out of the water. Will post more later, but again, huge congrats to suapah!

EDIT: $9286 actually, should have hit refresh before posting.

EDIT Again: $10,000!!!

^congratulations to both, very well played all around.

Thanks to everyone who donated and checked out the stream; your guys comments and donations kept me going for that long. This was my single favorite Smogon event ever, and that says a lot because I have been on here for years. What we did today is amazing and we truly are making a difference!

Awesome tournament with a great cause and good turnout!

Shoutouts to kjdaas and Perry . They hosted this tournament superbly and it went very smoothly. Thanks to Kalalokki for hosting the stream as long as he did, and people like Finchinator Hogg Mannat Eo Ut Mortus and other commentators for tuning in and making the viewing experience super enjoyable.

As for the players, y'all showed off some awesome early meta innovations and hilarious memes that we had to endure such as a Whirlpool Eiscue vs Whirlpool Kanga mirror. Thanks for the entertainment!

Alright, time for a more serious set of shout-outs. This tournament really felt like something special, and there were a lot of people who worked their asses off to make it happen. This whole thing from inception to execution was put together in less than two weeks and I think it was a resounding success. I've got to say that I agree with Finch - this whole thing was a whirlwind but it has definitely been my favorite event on Smogon, and I've come out of it feeling such great things about our community.

First, should probably mention my UUTL partner in crime TDK, who was the first person to bring up potentially doing some kind of charity event for BLM charities. He was also one of the people I'd regularly hit up for advice when not sure about what direction to go with something re: the tour.

Second, hosts extraordinaire kjdaas and Perry did an absolutely fantastic job of hosting. This was a big tournament with several curveballs that set it apart from just hosting a standard stour. They managed to take it all in stride and host the qualifiers without a single bump, hiccup or delay, coming up with great ideas for how to facilitate things like the dual bracket system, getting every round out on time, handling substitutes and activity claims quickly and smoothly and more. Seriously, seeing such talented tournament hosts makes me feel really good about the future of tours on this website, and they deserve huge props. Double props to kj for also covering my ass by taking on an outsized portion of WCOP hosting duties while I focused on this for the last two weeks.

Third, brightobject put together a great logo for us in less than 48 hours. I really wanted something that could go up quickly so we could start advertising early, and BO delivered and was absolutely pleasant to work with and had great ideas for the logo. If you need artwork down the road, I highly recommend you consider commissioning BO.

Fourth, our incredible casters, in particular rozes, Mannat and especially Finchinator. Finch in particular managed to go strong for over seven hours with only one short break because he is an absolute machine. Sometimes he was even running as the only commentator, delivering insightful and engaging commentary, responding to questions on the Twitch stream and more, without ever letting the stream hit a lull. Mannat and Finch also were around for a lot of the planning stages of the tournament.

Fifth, can't mention the casters without mentioning Kalalokki, who was also instrumental in planning the tour and facilitated the stream for the full 7+ hours, created the splash page, organized the casters, swapped in the active games and more. Kala is incredibly competent and capable, and Smogon's media is really in good hands with him at the helm. I've thought really highly of him ever since first working with him during the planning stages of SPL X, and I can't say enough good things about the work he does. Pretty much the entirety of the twitch side of things on this tour was masterminded and implemented by Kala.

Sixth, Eo Ut Mortus was someone I poked for ideas a lot both as head TD and just as a generally smart dude whose opinion I respect. He also collated stats for the tour, made a seriously generous contribution, participated in the tour itself (and even won one of the qualifiers) and then still somehow had time to jump into the stream to offer some great commentary.

Seventh, holy crap y'all the participants here, especially the top 8, ran a marathon. I don't know of any other Smogon tournament like this, where the winners ended up playing 15+ games in a single day for over seven hours to claim the top prize. This had to have been absolutely grueling, but it didn't stop everyone from producing some incredibly high quality games and giving us a great preview into what a post-DLC meta will look like.

Eighth and most importantly, just a huge shout-out to the Smogon community overall. I am not sure what I expected when we first started organizing this - I was hoping for a decent response of course, but not this. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and I've seen generosity that far exceeded even my wildest dreams for this tournament. We had over 80 contributors, with a contribution range from $5 at the low end to an incredible $2,500 at the high end, managing to contribute a grand total of $10,050.69 to four great organizations. And those who couldn't contribute still managed to show their support in other ways, from sharing the tournament to keeping the Twitch stream active and engaging, etc. I've never been prouder to be a part of this community. You're all absolutely fantastic.

Thanks again for making this an incredible event, y'all. Black lives matter.
