move 4: Earthquake

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Rapid Spin keeps Alolan Sandslash's side of the field clear of entry hazards while retaining its own hazards on the opponent's side. Alolan Sandslash can also compress the roles of Stealth Rock setter and Rapid Spin user on the same set reliably, but if this is not desired, Toxic pressures Jellicent attempting to spinblock while crippling other switch-ins like Poliwrath and Quagsire. Icicle Crash hits Oricorio-G, Oricorio-E, Alolan Exeggutor, and Drampa the hardest, while Iron Head primarily covers Froslass, Crabominable, and Clefairy. Earthquake is Alolan Sandslash's best coverage move to deal with Pokemon like Qwilfish, Aggron, Lanturn, and Togedemaru.

Set Details
========

48 Speed EVs allow Alolan Sandslash outpace Choice Scarf Aurorus under hail thanks to Slush Rush. Leftovers grants passive recovery to improve its longevity.

Usage Tips
========

Alolan Sandslash can check many special attackers whose attacks resists with its typing, but it must predict around potential coverage moves from the likes of Lilligant, Mesprit, and Aurorus. Keeping entry hazards away should be prioritized whenever possible; while Alolan Sandslash can deter Ghost-types like Oricorio-G and Froslass with its STAB attacks and pressure from its Stealth Rock, catching Pokemon it struggles to threaten with Toxic like Jellicent and Sableye is important to avoid losing momentum. Lastly, Alolan Sandslash sets up Stealth Rock well against certain hazard removers due to its ability to discourage Defog users like non-Flamethrower Altaria and physical Skuntank.

Team Options
========

Fighting-type switch-ins such as Mesprit, Qwilfish, and Scyther give refuge against one of Alolan Sandslash's main weaknesses and appreciate a check to Pokemon like Oricorio-G. Alolan Sandslash's typing also mandates a good Fire-type check, which can include Pokemon like Clefairy and Poliwrath. Ghost-types are great not only as Fighting-type checks but also to help keep Stealth Rock up; Jellicent is one of Alolan Sandslash's best teammates, compressing a Fighting- and Fire-type check and a spinblocker in a single slot. Froslass and Oricorio-G also appreciate Stealth Rock removal as well as a good Aurorus switch-in. Pairing Alolan Sandslash with good switch-ins to Ground-type attacks to better check Mudsdale and Alolan Dugtrio is appreciated, both of which Tangela and Lurantis can provide. Teammates to help against bulky Water-types, especially Jellicent and Qwilfish, include Lanturn, Alolan Exeggutor, and Eelektross. Spikes users like Qwilfish and Roselia appreciate Rapid Spin as opposed to a Defogger for a form of hazard control.

  • Stealth Rock pressures opposing teams by damaging switch-ins, especially Rock-weak Pokemon like Aurorus and Scyther. you also get ample opportunities to set rocks on stuff like defensive mes, clef, etc.
  • Rapid Spin keeps Alolan Sandslash's team clear of hazards while retaining its own hazards on the opponent's side. mention being able to threaten a few spinblockers with s/e stabs
  • Icicle Crash OHKOs Alolan Exeggutor and Altaria while hitting Pokemon like Lilligant, Oricorio-G/E, Drampa, and Golurk hard.
  • Iron Head primarily covers Froslass, while always OHKOing Aurorus and Jynx. It also 2HKOs Clefairy and Crabominale, both of which would otherwise tank its other attacks.
  • Earthquake is Alolan Sandslash's best coverage move, hitting Qwilfish, Aggron, Lanturn, Aurorus, and Togedemaru hard.
  • If SR+Spin role compression isn't needed, Toxic can cripple switch-ins such as Poliwrath, Sableye, and Pyukumuku. Alolan Sandslash can also check boosting sweepers such as non-Safeguard Bellossom and Musharna with Toxic.

Set Details
========

  • 48 Speed EVs outpace Choice Scarf Aurorus when Slush Rush is activated.
  • Slush Rush doubles its Speed under Hail, which is important for maximizing its ability to check Aurorus
  • Leftovers grants passive recovery to improve its longevity
  • A Careful nature with maximum HP and 208 Special Defense EVs optimizes Alolan Sandslash's special bulk anything in particular this helps it take on?
  • You could mention running 60 speed evs instead as to outpace scarf aboma as well
Usage Tips
========

  • Alolan Sandslash should use its typing and bulk to check Pokemon like Mesprit, Jynx, Aurorus, and Oricorio-G.
  • Although it can check Lilligant, it must be wary of Hidden Power Fire as it loses to those variants, although it can always take a hit unboosted (LO or Quiver Dance-boosted).
  • Alolan Sandslash sets up Stealth Rock well against certain hazard control due to its ability to discourage Defog users like Altaria and physical Skuntank.
  • Keeping hazards away is prioritized whenever possible. While Alolan Sandlash can deter Ghost-types like Oricorio-G and Froslass with its STABs and pressure from its Stealth Rock, removing Pokemon it struggles to threaten like Sableye and Spiritomb is important to avoid losing momentum.
  • Preserving Sandslash's health is important, so avoid playing aggressively aside from what it's used to check reliably.
  • Avoid burns from Will-O-Wisp and Scald users, as the damage output loss makes it less effective in threatening Pokemon with its attacks.
  • It's probably worth scouting for things like special skuntank and offensive mes with a s/e hidden power, they fuck it up pretty badly even with spdef investment in consideration
Team Options
========

  • Good Fire-type checks include Poliwrath, Clefairy, Altaria but.. alt kinda overlaps with slash a bit with its role as a defogger
  • Fighting-type checks such as Mesprit, Qwilfish, Scyther
  • Ghost-types are great not only by extension as Fighting-checks but maintain rocks via spinblocking: Sableye, Froslass, Oricorio-G
  • Switch-ins to Ground-type attacks include Tangela and Lurantis
  • Pokemon that appreciate hazard removal include: Oricorio-E, Ninetales, and Swanna
  • breakers/sweepers that appreciate having rocks up. smth like stoutland can take advantage of sableye/tomb

  • Rapid Spin keeps Alolan Sandslash's team clear of hazards while retaining its own hazards on the opponent's side.
  • Stealth Rock pressures opposing teams by damaging switch-ins, especially Rock-weak Pokemon like Aurorus and Scyther. why is the toxic mention down there and not up here? also rocks and toxic are so obvious i woudlnt even give them more than a sentence between the two when u write it up, new guidelines mean we dont have to rehash stuff like this
  • Icicle Crash OHKOs Alolan Exeggutor and Altaria while hitting Pokemon like Lilligant, Oricorio-G/E, Drampa, and Golurk hard.
  • Iron Head primarily covers Froslass, while always OHKOing Aurorus and Jynx. It also 2HKOs Clefairy and Crabominale, both of which would otherwise tank its other attacks. ditto for here, just mentioning it's a good dual stab combo along with eq is enough without getting into super obvious examples like oh icicle crash hits altaria
  • Earthquake is Alolan Sandslash's best coverage move, hitting Qwilfish, Aggron, Lanturn, Aurorus, and Togedemaru hard.
  • If SR+Spin role compression isn't needed, Toxic can cripple switch-ins such as Poliwrath, Sableye, and Pyukumuku. Alolan Sandslash can also check boosting sweepers such as non-Safeguard Bellossom and Musharna with Toxic. with drops id say quag and jellicent are much more relevant than pyuku/sab/musharna

  • Alolan Sandslash should use its typing and bulk to check Pokemon like Mesprit, Jynx, Aurorus, and Oricorio-G. well i mean duh, this rly doesnt add anything
  • Although it can check Lilligant, it must be wary of Hidden Power Fire as it loses to those variants, although it can always take a hit unboosted (LO or Quiver Dance-boosted). I'd extend this to a general be careful of random HP fires and fightings, there's also the occasional mesprit or cuno or w/e
  • Alolan Sandslash sets up Stealth Rock well against certain hazard control due to its ability to discourage Defog users like Altaria and physical Skuntank. i mean flamethrower alt is still rly common so idk
  • Preserving Sandslash's health is important, so avoid playing aggressively aside from what it's used to check reliably. this point is so generic and unexplained when it could be one of the only things here that isnt completely rote and obvious if there was specific detail on how to play alolaslash
  • Avoid burns from Will-O-Wisp and Scald users, as the damage output loss makes it less effective in threatening Pokemon with its attacks.

  • Earthquake is Alolan Sandslash's best coverage move, hitting Qwilfish -1 0 Atk Sandslash-Alola Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Qwilfish: 110-130 (33 - 39%) -- 99.5% chance to 3HKO. I think something like "chip" would be more appropriate, Aggron, Lanturn, Aurorus, and Togedemaru hard.

  • Slush Rush doubles its Speed under Hail, which is important for maximizing its ability to check Aurorus
  • Leftovers grants passive recovery to improve its longevity
Usage Tips
========

  • Alolan Sandslash can check many special attackers it resists with its typing, but it must be wary of the occasional Hidden Power Fire or Fighting from Pokemon like Lilligant, Mesprit, and Articuno. Since Aurorus can also hit it with Earth Power, I think I would throw it into that list, and expand Hidden Power to coverage overall. Also, I talked about it with QC and we decided that HP Fire stuff should be scrapped, although Mesp can be kept due to HP Ground. I also think Cuno should be listed as an HP Ground user rather than a HP Fighting user, since it hits Toge harder
  • Keeping hazards away is prioritized whenever possible. While Alolan Sandlash can deter Ghost-types like Oricorio-G and Froslass with its STABs and pressure from its Stealth Rock, catching Pokemon it struggles to threaten with Toxic like Jellicent and Sableye is important to avoid losing momentum.
  • Alolan Sandslash sets up Stealth Rock well against certain hazard control due to its ability to discourage Defog users like non-Flamethrower Altaria I don't really think non-Flamethrower needs to be specified and physical Skuntank.
  • Avoid burns from Will-O-Wisp and Scald users, as the damage output loss makes it less effective in threatening Pokemon with its attacks.
Team Options
========

  • Fighting-type switch-ins such as Mesprit, Qwilfish, and Scyther give refuge against one of its main weaknesses and appreciates a check to Pokemon like Oricorio-G.
  • Alolan Sandslash's typing also mandates good Fire-type check, which can include Pokemon like Clefairy, Munchlax, and Poliwrath.

  • Pairing Alolan Sandslah spelling with good switch-ins into Ground-type attacks to better check Mudsdale and Alolan Dugtrio is appreciated, both of which Tangela and Lurantis can provide.
  • Finally, much like certain previously mentioned Pokemon, Alolan Sandslash works well with supporting hazard weak Pokemon in general like Oricorio-E and Swanna.
  • Teammates to help against bulky Waters like Jelli and Qwil
  • Stuff like Spikers who appreciate a spinner rather than a Defogger
