My highlights of week 1:
- Nails chipping Beds' Exeggutor into hyperbeam range with double-edge recoil
- Troller repeatedly catching Metalgro$$ trying to double back to Rhydon, albeit with no real reward
- Sceptross predicting an unrevealed Megadrain from Genesis's Exeggutor

Overal game of the round is g2 of hml am vs Amaranth. hml has to predict like a fiend to overcome an early slept chansey and a Jolt vs Rhydon matchup. I think Amaranth might have gotten a little complacent in the early stages and when he starts to wake up to the threat, hml gets a couple of rolls that put the whole thing completely out of doubt.

A lot of messy games this time though..

Week 1 thoughts:

Stats:
  • Starmie currently slightly ahead of Egg, which is definitely worth noting. I personally believe it's the best Pokemon in the tier after the big 4 by far, and it's even challenging for a spot in the Top 4 so far (and as been the case for the past year now).
  • The curiosity of the first week is Jolteon high usage, coming after the usual Top 7. I guess it can be expected as it has a lot going for it vs the Top 6 and Rhydon can be abused by Tauros. Expecting it to die down and Zapdos to take its rightful place by the end of the tournament, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it edge out some stuff like Jynx or Lapras by the end of the tour.
Games:
  • I thought the team Troller used in his first game vs Metalgross was very interesting. Although it didn't quite work out here, the build itself showcases what I deem to be a great take on "proactive stall". Porygon presence offsets Snorlax which makes it unable to get past Chansey. You can then conserve it for the plethora of things it can stall. Jolteon covers a potential Zapdos while helping thanks to its natural speed vs the otherwise threatening Waters, especially with Alakazam as the designated sleep target. Troller and I tested a bit for this game and like I said earlier, I think Starmie is a much better Pokemon than Alakazam, which I would have used in this configuration to help a bit vs Grounds. Troller did try to circumvent this issue with Surf Snorlax for the surprise OHKO but it didn't hit.
  • TIN HML third game was very entertaining for all the wrong reasons. Interesting build from TIN, its pretty funny that he tried to catch a Starmie/Zam lead with Chansey, met a sleeper lead but got some godly odds to still make it work with a Sing hitting through paralysis lmao.

Week 2 thoughts:

Stats:

  • Pretty high amount of Jynx this week, 7th in usage after the Big 6. There were talks about players approaching the tier more offensively and Jynx is def a solid lead for that. It also does well vs Starmie which is everywhere.
  • Although Jolteon wasn't as popular as in the first week, it still saw more usage than Rhydon. Being faster than Tauros and matching up well vs the oh so popular Starmie does that to you I guess.
Games:
  • Sceptross gotta work on his nerves, he had some pretty poor endgames so far. I think he played the first endgame vs Kaz way too conservatively when going for a more direct & offensive approach would have given him good odds.
  • Genesis only showed 4 Pokemons in both of his wins vs Beds, can't remember the last time I saw that. Although RNG was on his side, it's still something quite uncommon.
  • Second Chansey-less team from the season with Kaz going with a triple Psychic + Jolt approach in his first game vs Sceptross. I don't think the game played as he intended to, but Zam did a pretty good job at being a fat special Wall and its PPs+Psychics allowed him to win a game where Chansey would have likely been PPStalled or wouldn't have been able to get past a Resting Jolteon.

This weeks highlights:
- Amaranth's Snorlax Countering Troller's Explosion
- Troller's Tauros burning Amaranth's but still losing the Tauros war (dont use Fireblast Tauros kids)
- Troller's game 2 vs Amaranth is an absolute masterclass of ice Chansey usage, not letting Amaranth get his lax in against Chansey once.
- Metalgro$$ I assume didnt have tbolt on his Starmie in g1 vs Er Peris, in which case he does a great job of getting full value out of it while concealing his set..

Another thing I noticed the past couple of weeks is how effective Starmie has been as a Snorlax check so far. I honestly dont expect this to continue..

Battle of the week is g1 Kaz vs Sceptross. I love a good stallwar, and this one is fantastic. I respectfully disagree with McMeghan, I think Sceptross played the endgame very well, it's just that Kaz managed to catch him with Psychics just enough times to win. I think if anything Sceptross may have been a little bit too aggressive in letting his Exeggutor go. If he had held onto it for a free switch he may have had a shot at waking that Jolteon.

This is something I'd like to focus on because it shows a very weird concept I have noticed among RBY players. Good matchups in RBY are kinda different because they depend on what you want out of the matchup. Often enough I have seen games where after the match both think they had the matchup advantage.

You are saying Jynx is good because of Starmie. If I notice someome leads many Jynxes my initial reaction is to lead... Starmie. The thing is you aren't wrong and neither am I. Your philosophy behind Jynx is that you want to click Lovely Kiss and if the stars align get some value out of it later (Fish for a freeze, Sleep cycle a Chansey, force out an Eggy, etc.). My philosophy behind Starmie lead is that I want to click Twave and have my Starmie eat a Status. If I expect Jynx lead my best options are to use a faster mon. Gengar wins the matchup when I hit Hypnosis, period (not 100% true but for simplicity sake). Alakazam also gets off the sleep but is forced out early due to being 3hkoed by Blizzard, Jynxens decent crit chance doesn't help. Jynx yourself means you win the matchup vs Jynx 50% of the time. Starmie is in fact the best thing you can throw in Jynxs way, let's be real. You are faster and you can take a couple of hits, which gives you the freedom to decide how long you want to stay in, how many blizzard pp you want to burn at the risk of your opponent switching sth in for free. Back in the day I even used to maintain a spreadsheet on what players stay in with Starmie after taking sleep.
Anyways, Starmie user will think "I got the best possible thing in vs Jynx", Jynx user will think "I get what I want in using sleep and trying to force an advantage in the following turns".

Who got the good matchup?

Just 2 years ago people called me free wins for using Jynx, the same people use Jynx now. It's a proactive approach to the game. You break open the Parad Mie Parad Chans Restlax switch chains that we have all seen a trillion times by now. You also prevent the T1 Chansey switch and many of the previously unorthodox Chansey approaches. Hell someone using Sing Beam Counter Boiled Chansey would've been called insane 4 years ago.

Starmie is used more and more because it's the ultimate reactive mon. You want to throw it in front of Jynx. You also want to throw it in front of Stoss Chansey, Restlax, Tauros, Eggy, Zam, Rhydon, Jynx, all wrappers and probably even more. And that's just its defensive merit, we all know what Starmie does offensively. Starmie is just so versatile in that you can always find a good matchup for it because depending on how you look at it it matches up nicely vs everything not named Jolteon and Zapdos. Undamaged Zapdos that is since Starmie has a faster Blizzard. Starmie thrives in a tournament setting too, especially since players these days are super weary of getting the wrong matchup (less and less elecs because nobody wants the one clearcut bad matchup in elec vs rhydon). Starmie will always have a good matchup somewhere, even if it's just taking the inevitable Jynx sleep. Everything it does past that is pure benefit.

Per some of Beds' points (from last week yeesh): between reluctance to use Electrics, popularity of SToss Chansey, lack of Tbolt on Starmie, popularity of Reflect Lax, and surging popularity of Jynx... is it time for a Slowbro renaissance?

i'll have more time and willingness to elaborate on my season after spl ends, but my g2 against gen7 is probably the worst i've ever played on the official stage and i'm not really sure how that happened considering week 5 was probably the best i've ever played on the official stage

very excited to close out the regular season against three very strong opponents in kaz/nails/metal

Per some of Beds' points (from last week yeesh): between reluctance to use Electrics, popularity of SToss Chansey, lack of Tbolt on Starmie, popularity of Reflect Lax, and surging popularity of Jynx... is it time for a Slowbro renaissance?
Sorry for the late reply, i just noticed the thread. Slowbro has many problems to overcome, SToss Chansey is in my opinion another bad mu of Slowbro, it forces Rest quite quickly and gives your Rhydon (3hko)/electric mon/TBolt Starmie (still very present in today rby) free switches, while TBolt does way less bar crits, and if you play Slowbro Chansey is the last thing you will be worried about critting you. Add to that the fact that Reflect Lax still carries Hyper Beam or Self Destruct at times and you have the picture of why Slowbro is just not good, i don't think he deserves his current 0 usage but it's probably the hardest mon to make us of, and the most frustrating too.
