Project SS AG Next Best Thing [On Hiatus]

With 6 votes, Geysers wins this round with his Weakness Policy set! For the 10th week of Next Best Thing, we are going to do...

Week 10 - Lunala
:ss/lunala:

Lunala is a very useful defensive Pokemon thanks to its ability to check Groudon, Zekrom, and Zygarde; this is because of its ability Shadow Shield, good bulk, and helpful coverage moves in Will-O-Wisp, Ice Beam, and Roost. It can also soft check threats like Zacian-C at full health, proceeding to cripple it with a burn. Meteor Beam sets have also made their debut in Snake Draft, acting as a good win condition that can lure in and KO Yveltal for teammates like Calyrex-S, while still soft checking Groudon, Zekrom, and Zygarde.

Lunala @ Choice Specs
Ability: Shadow Shield
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moongeist Beam
- Psyshock
- Moonblast
- Teleport/Trick/Focus Blast

This set is pretty straight forward. It's a calyrex that can 2hko yveltal.

252 SpA Choice Specs Lunala Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Yveltal: 236-278 (51.8 - 61%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

The stab combination of ghost and psychic is so crazy in this meta that the ability to 2hko the most common and effective check to Calyrex should enable you to break most teams.

252 SpA Choice Specs Lunala Moongeist Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Prism Armor Necrozma-Dusk-Mane: 355-418 (89.1 - 105%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Lunala Psyshock vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Eternatus: 426-504 (88.5 - 104.7%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Lunala Moongeist Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Kyogre: 190-225 (47 - 55.6%) -- 19.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Lunala Moongeist Beam vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Groudon: 279-328 (69.5 - 81.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Lunala Moongeist Beam vs. 0 HP / 216 SpD Kyurem-White: 207-244 (52.9 - 62.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Lunala Psyshock vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Blissey: 369-435 (51.6 - 60.9%) -- 94.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery (no one runs this but just to make a point)

The 4th slot on this set is very flexible. Teleport allows you to switch into something like groudon or zacian if they have a ttar so you're not totally useless. Trick is ok on here but you're better off with the specs. Focus blast is for ttar so you just end it. Overall, nice mon, you give up the speed of caly for the ability to break yve without wasting dmax.

Lunala @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Shadow Shield
EVs: 56 HP / 252 Def / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
- Future Sight
- Teleport
- Ice Beam
- Roost

If you have ever played OU (and it's also been pretty important to UU for a time as well), you'll know about FuturePort and what it can do to help out wallbreakers. Lunala is one of the only Pokemon, besides Slowbro and Slowking, that both learns the move combination and has the bulk to utilise it. It synergises greatly with Pokemon that struggle to break Eternatus, like Kyogre or Marshadow. It also does 60.9 - 71.8% to Quagsire, allowing Zacian-C to overwhelm it easily, and it nearly 2HKOes defensive Zygarde prior to Power Construct activation, for example. Ice Beam is chosen because you need it to threaten Pokemon like Zekrom, Groudon, or Marshadow, and there would be little point to the set if you had no way at all to do anything to Yveltal.

Lunala @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Shadow Shield
EVs: 56 HP / 252 SpD / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Roar
- Ice Beam
- Shadow Ball
- Roost

Lunala's special bulk is often overlooked. Due to its already impressive special bulk being coupled with Shadow Shield, it can easily switch into most special attackers, provided it is healthy. Roar helps against setup sweepers like Calm Mind Kyogre and Geomancy Xerneas after its Dynamax has been used up. Ice Beam's a good offensive move in general, and Shadow Ball OHKOes Calyrex-S.

252 SpA Choice Specs Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 56 HP / 252 SpD Shadow Shield Lunala in Rain: 172-203 (40 - 47.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+2 252+ SpA Fairy Aura Xerneas Moonblast vs. 56 HP / 252 SpD Shadow Shield Lunala: 171-202 (39.8 - 47%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Calyrex-Shadow Rider Astral Barrage vs. 56 HP / 252 SpD Shadow Shield Lunala: 266-314 (62 - 73.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

0 SpA Lunala Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Calyrex-Shadow Rider: 456-540 (133.7 - 158.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

:lunala: Agility Offensive Lunala

Lunala @ Expert Belt
Ability: Shadow Shield
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moongeist Beam
- Psyshock
- Moonblast/Ice Beam
- Agility

General idea
The idea is to use the natural bulk of this thing in order to set-up an Agility in order to reach 644 Spe points, enough to outspeed most of the AG environment (https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/anything-goes-speed-tiers.3673189/).

Moongeist Beam + Psyshock is the dual-STAB combination with the second move hitting the physical side.
The third and last move is disputed by Moonblast and Ice Beam. Both of them are strong and both have strong secondary effects.
Moonblast hits Dark-types supereffectively, and this is important because they resisted or they are immune to the former two moves.
Keep in mind that Ice Beam achieves the OHKO or the 2HKO towards targets weak 4x to it, though.

Team(mates) support
Hazards control is mandatory to keep Shadow Shield active and, for the same reason, a slow VoltTurn support is appreciated.

LUNALA VS SOGOLEO.gif

Lunala @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Shadow Shield
EVs: 248 HP / 236 Def / 24 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Meteor Beam
- Will-O-Wisp / Toxic
- Cosmic Power
- Roost

Lunala Is an amazing pokemon with an amazing ability to complement it. With Lunala being weak to dark and ghost type moves it (The 2 common types in the metagame) It hasn't had any other set, besides its defensive set, that has fit well into the meta. But what I have for you, is a set that can keep Lunala around longer and be very threatening to very weakened teams. Meteor Beam allows it to hit any Yveltal for some good damage while also getting a special attack boost. Will-O-Wisp, Toxic, or Focus Blast can be run as the second move, With Will-O-Wisp crippling spd Yveltal and Tyranitar making it way easier to set up cosmic power on them while also crippling offensive switch-ins like Marshadow and Urshifu-S. Toxic allows it to put the said foes on a timer and stops Chansey or Blissey from just coming in and walling.

Lunala is surprisingly underrated as a Dual Screens user. It has access to a myriad of status moves, reliable healing in Roost, and can even remove your opponent's hazards with Defog without sweeping away the screens it sets. Here's the build.

:ss/Lunala:
Lunala @ Light Clay
Ability: Shadow Shield
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Reflect
- Light Screen
- Defog / Thunder Wave / Toxic / Will-O-Wisp
- Roost

As you can see, this set has a lot of options in its third slot. Defog allows you to remove your opponent's screens/hazards, Thunder Wave cripples mons like Ditto that rely on speed, Toxic can help take care of tanks in the long run, and Will-O-Wisp efficiently cripples most physically offensive Pokémon. All of these moves are equally viable and useful depending on your situation; just pick whichever one benefits your team the most. Reflect and Light Screen allow Lunala to stay in play for even longer, where it can use Shadow Shield to weaken incoming attacks and heal back up with Roost, while your opponent continues to take chip damage from Toxic.

Overall, this is a really viable, yet overlooked, set that has great potential in our current metagame.
