In 3 days it will be the one year anniversary of my time on Smogon. Little did I know that 1 year later from that date, I would be writing up an RMT for a Pet Mod that I had done so much work in the community that I had been rewarded with a badge. And that I would've made so many great people, and friends.

Balor(Mega Magmortar)
Balor (Magmortar) @ magmortarite
Ability: Vital Spirit
EVs: 208 HP / 104 Def / 140 SpD / 56 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Flamethrower
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Recover
Much like the Balor of Dungeons and Dragons, and the Balrog of Lord of the Rings, this fiery Monster means a lot to me, as it is the Mega Evolution I made(along with my friend abismal) that best represents not only my playstyle, but also is the best executed Mega Evolution the M4A Project has put out(heavily biased obviously). For those not aware, Mega Magmortar has the ability Neutralizing Gas, which it uses to disable and cripple the Regenerator cores that are so common in modern pokemon, it gains recovery in, Recover which allows it to deal with its previously crippling rocks weakness. It also has a ludicrously high Special attack(of 170), so it can exert amazing offensive pressure, while focusing on bulk investment.
Neutralizing Gas Mega Magmortar was the first choice for this team because of its access to Electric Fire Ice Coverage, allowing it to pressure the bulky Ground(Landorus, Gliscor)+Mega Empoleon defensive cores that are so prevalent in a Cinderace Metagame, while also pressuring Toxapex very heavily, providing a buffer for Heatran, Obliterating steels like Corviknight and Ferrothorn, and due to Neutralizing gas can actually beat quite a few offensive mons, most importantly Cinderace. Its speedtier on this team is for Speedcreeping pokemon that speedcreep for Heatran Speedcreep, Specifically the standard set of 255 Mega Empoleon. While the physical bulk allows it to live Urshifu Rapid strikes banded Aqua Jet, in addition to avoiding the 2hko from Cinderace High Jump Kick. Mega Magmortar also provides insurance against all of the Weather teams,
Sinking Ship(Keldeo)
Sinking Ship (Keldeo) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Secret Sword
- Hydro Pump
- Scald
- Flip Turn
The next pokemon I wanted to add was an offensive partner to Magmortar, and Keldeo was the best choice for this team, a great speed tier, an additional softcheck to Blacephelon and an Ash Greninja check. But most importantly it benefits incredibly from the removal of Regenerator mons like Toxapex, and Slowbro. Clearing the space for it to sweep with the drop of a hat. I chose Specs over Scarf for this team because the raw power, 2hkoing Corviknight with scald is utter insanity. And I chose Flip turn to gain momentum, and to force pressure on the Regenerator mons Magmortar defeats. Specs Keldeo with spikes down is also nearly unstoppable.
Crosshairs(Weavile)
Crosshairs (Weavile) @ Choice Band
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pursuit
- Triple Axel
- Knock Off
- Ice Shard
Keldeo+Pursuit is a tale as old as time, but with Weavile being one of the prominent offensive threats at the moment, with its amazing speed tier, access to priority, pursuit, and an incredibly hard to switch into dual stab of Triple Axel and Knock Off. Facilitating Keldeos sweep isn't the only use for Weavile, as it also destroys one of the biggest threat to Magmortar, while being incredibly supported by it, Incinerating Buzzwole and Rocky Helmet Corv for Weavile to also sweep. Swords dance is another option but that trades off Pursuit and immediate power, for off the bat Gamewinning potential. Weavile also picks off the pokemon that were weakened by Magmortar, most notably Galarian Slowking, who is an obstacle to both Magmortar and Keldeo. Weavile also is extra insurance to SD Z Garchomp.
Ups and Downs(Slowbro
Ups and downs (Slowbro) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Teleport
- Slack Off
- Scald
- Future Sight
At this point in the building process I decided to start considering the defensive issues, and I also realized the team really didn't have many ways of making real progress against Cinderace. Rocky Helmet Slowbro provided critical defensive utility while also providing Future sight for the team, and slow pivoting into the teams offensive threats. Standard Evs Maximized Physical bulk, Regenerator number, Minimum speed. Slowbro also can act as a temporary pivot when you know the Kyurem set is Dragon Dance
Days and Nights(Ferrothorn)
Days and Nights (Ferrothorn) @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Careful Nature
- Power Whip
- Leech Seed
- Knock Off
- Spikes
While adding Slowbro to the team there were some tradeoffs, the most important one being that my Bulky water cannot check Ash Greninja. So Ferrothorn was the best choice to fill out the 5th slot. Providing spikes, acting as a check for calm mind sweepers like Tapu Fini, Paulking, and Mega Starmie, in addition to defensively supporting the team in every way, The Ferrobro core was the way to go. I dislike ferros that dont run enough physical defense to avoid the Defensive Landorus's, so it has enough physdef to subsist against them, and then the rest in spedef to check all special attackers that dont have supereffective coverage.
Strahd(Gliscor)
Strahd (Gliscor) @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 244 HP / 76 Def / 168 SpD / 20 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Defog
- Roost
Much like the real Strahd von Zarovich(not real, hes a fictional character), Gliscor is always searching for its true love, a team that uses its strengths in the best possible ways, and in this specific case Defog Gliscor, it is one of the only defoggers that can reliably beat Heatran while not being weak to toxic. It also can be a softcheck to many physical and special threats in the metagame, most importantly Electrics like Tapu Koko, and the dreaded Mega Raichu. I dont recall exactly what the Evs on this Gliscor do, but speed for tran, Pheal number, and then mixed bulk allowing it to check a multitude of threats.
Threats
Volcarona: When is a team not weak to Volcarona, you just have to make sure to outmanuever and make sure, it doesn't set up, if it does pray for para with Magmortar and you might get rewarded.
Kyurem: The meta is undergoing many changes, many people want it banned, and it will be suspected, depending on the set you have to play different, try to avoid DD getting a sub up, and make sure to have a spike up or so, in the right situation Keldeo Weavile and Magmortar can all beat it.
Cinderace: This thing will be banned, do not worry, but bulk up Cinderace is, very broken. Just hope to burn it using slowbro, or that its the wrong Z.
This team was built during many changes in the meta, and I believe in it to persist in being good throughout these changes.
Cinderace and Kyurem will likely be banned soon so the team will get better over time, and then as more Megas get added Magmortar becomes better and better. This is a good show, and a picture of the meta at the moment however, and has brought me much success.
If you want any replays of this battle just @ me on the M4A discord. Dragonheaven still treats replays wackily.
Thank you's
In one year I have made a lot of friends, and I would like to write about all of them but that will get too cluttered. I'll mention a few though :].
BlueRay
:Thank you for making me a better player in every way, no matter what happens I know I can send you a message and you'll be a great friend. I cant write enough to say how awesome you are and how happy I am I met you. Just stop haxing people in tournament battles
IsoCon
: Dude thanks for being my rival, always testing teams, keeping up with all my bullshit, and beating me relentlessly when the team is bad.
Hematite
: I probably wouldn't be around if it wasn't for you, I've never really addressed how much fun it is to have you leading the mod, you're really great at it, and keeping up with everything. You've also in general been a great friend.
Hematemesis
: You're always down on yourself as a player, but you're genuinely great, and amazingly positive about everything, you're also a great leader of the mod competitively, you just need to refocus your skill.
pupugugu
: In addition to everything you do artwise, you're a great friend, and I love talking to you, you're also a genuinely great player, if you just grinded a bit more and tried more, you'd definitely be in the big leagues.
abismal
: Honestly theres so much to say, your potential is way higher than, I think anybody else realizes, if you're a good player using utter jank like fucking NOSEPASS. You might seriously be the goat.
Ema Skye
: Thanks for bringing me on to help lead Hoenn Gaiden, probably one of the biggest moments in my Smogon career, and its a great mod. That was also a great birthday present.
NEON_Voyager
: I honestly believed in myself a lot less before I met you, thanks for supporting me, being a generally positive force, and a great friend.
RealJester
: We dont talk too frequently anymore, but I just wanted to say here that you really inspired me to be the best player and manager I could be, you did call me passive once on BKCcord and that really stuck with me, it was BS you didnt get picked up in SPL. One of the upcoming greats.
Monai
: Also utter BS you weren't picked up in SPL, you are one of the most positive forces I know, and one of the best players I have ever met, hit me up any time if you want to build something.
Rezzo:
: Honestly, I'm so glad I talked to you, your motivation to help and understand the game we play is second to none, you're a great player and builder, and if I didn't talk with you about Pet Mods I would've made an awful mistake. You also have great music taste, please dont retire and play fortnite instead of Pokemon
bynum
: A rather new friend but it was so cool to meet someone that I share so much with, and them also being a genuinely great player, is just the icing on the cake.
Sticky Fingaaa
: You are a great player, and that isn't said enough, I said in one of our early battles how much I respect you as a player, and that hasn't changed one bit.
Mossy Sandwich
: Shut up about Cinderace please god, you tricked everybody in m4a including me into thinking it was balanced, and then kept controlling discussion around it that people didn't even run Bulk up Ace until very recently. But nevertheless you're a great player, and a great friend. Excited for you to finally make it big(not like you dont already have a custom avatar).
Thats all for now homies. Peace!
