Crawdaunt @ Choice Band
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Aqua Jet
- Knock Off
- Crabhammer
- Crunch

The GOAT is a check. As long as it’s alive, Volcarona ain’t sweeping shit.

252+ Atk Choice Band Adaptability Crawdaunt Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Volcarona: 384-456 (123.4 - 146.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Crawdaunt: 121-143 (45.3 - 53.5%) -- 37.1% chance to 2HKO

Slowking-Galar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 128 SpA / 128 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flamethrower
- Future Sight
- Sludge Bomb
- Scald / Hydro Pump

A check who specializes in eating Volcarona's attacks, regenerating it back, and dealing great amounts of damage to the insect when unboosted. Future Sight is a high-power trap occasionally laid out to do a lot of damage, Scald does good damage (and if you choose to run it, Hydro Pump does even more so), and Sludge Bomb has a fairly high chance to spread debilitating poison. Volcarona will also be more focused on Roosting than using Quiver Dance in this 1V1 because of how much you'll be hitting it, limiting how many times it can set up, unless the Slowking user clicks FS on a turn where Volcarona gets to high HP (or some other interaction i.e. Hydro miss), which is a golden opportunity to QD so it tanks more of Glowking's hits and overwhelm it if it gets even more dances up, causing it to use multiple actions healing through Regenerator. This is precisely why it's only a check in my eyes.

+2 252 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 128+ SpD Assault Vest Slowking-Galar: 151-178 (38.3 - 45.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
128 SpA Slowking-Galar Future Sight vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 153-180 (49.1 - 57.8%) -- 96.1% chance to 2HKO
128 SpA Slowking-Galar Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 136-160 (43.7 - 51.4%) -- 6.6% chance to 2HKO
128 SpA Slowking-Galar Sludge Bomb vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 114-135 (36.6 - 43.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
128 SpA Slowking-Galar Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 186-220 (59.8 - 70.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Reserving dragapult

:ss/dragapult:
Dragapult @ Choice Band
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Darts
- Sucker Punch
- Phantom Force
- U-turn

Choice Band Dragapult is a good check to volcarona in volturn teams. As you should apply constant pressure on the opponent team, dragapult is a good defensive answer when it comes to checking volcarona after a loss of momentum. If you manage to not get stealth rock on the field, you can check Dragapult high enough in hp to check volcarona. In a situtation you don't manage to do that, you can still come 2 times before being in range of + 1 psychic. Offensively, Dragon darts will always ohko volcarona and as it is not a contact move you will not trigger flame body from volcarona.
252 SpA Volcarona Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dragapult: 128-151 (40.3 - 47.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dragapult: 192-226 (60.5 - 71.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Dragapult Dragon Darts (2 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Volcarona: 326-386 (104.8 - 124.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

EVs: 252 HP / 8 Atk / 248 SpD
Careful Nature
- Earthquake

Hippowdon is a good intermideadiate check to volcarona as it can use its massive bulk to shrug off its +1 flamethrowers and cripple it with toxic, while boots are needed for longevity against volcarona's team

Congratulations to our four winners and thanks to everyone who made a submission.

Let’s do another Fire type for next week. This time you will have to find checks and counters for a Pokemon who came back from the depths of Ubers: Blaziken.

blaziken.gif

Blaziken @ Life Orb
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Close Combat
- Thunder Punch

Even if it is in UUBL, Blaziken is a threatening sweeper who can boost at the same time both its Attack stat with Swords Dance and its Speed stat with Speed Boost. Flare Blitz + Close Combat form a powerful combination of STABs letting it break through most neutral targets after a boost from Swords Dance. The last moveslot is a coverage option to hit Pokemon who resist its main STAB. This set is using Thunder Punch to deal with Bulky Water types but Knock Off and Earthquake are option too. Lastly, a Jolly nature allows it to outspeed things like Zeraora and Dragapult after a Speed boost and is thus often prefered over an Adamant nature, even though both can work. Good luck finding the best checks and counters to this burning chicken.

Submission phase will end on next Friday, good luck!

Garchomp @ Rocky Helmet / Leftovers
Ability:
Rough Skin
EVs: 252 HP /
176 Def / 80 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth
Rock
- Earth
quake
-
Toxic
- Rest
/ Protect

Tankchomp can check Swords Dance Blaziken well, due to it resisting Flare Blitz and immunity to Thunder Punch. Garchomp is also able to OHKO with its Earthquake, even uninvested. Since it already has high Speed, it can drop lots of Speed so that it can outspeed Jolly Blaziken, investing the rest in to HP and Defense. The combination of Rocky Helmet, Rough Skin, and Blaziken's Life Orb really wears Blaziken down incredibly quickly, taking up to 40% recoil from clicking Close Combat, and up to 53% recoil from clicking unboosted Flare Blitz. Boosted Close Combat can still OHKO if Blaziken outspeeds it, but Garchomp's existence forces it out.

0 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Blaziken: 360-426 (119.6 - 141.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 176 Def Garchomp: 105-125 (25 - 29.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 176 Def Garchomp: 211-248 (50.2 - 59%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Slowbro @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Scald
- Slack Off
- Future Sight
- Teleport

Slowbro acts as a check against Slowbro, you comfortably resist all of Blaziken's STABs and only fear Thunder Punch which you are able to stomach at least one after a Swords Dance. Slowbro can either use Future Sight for the guaranteed kill and pressure or Scald to severely weaken Blaziken putting it in range to fall down by Rocky Helmet and Life Orb recoil. This pressure on Blaziken gives it an advantage on either Blaziken brings itself down with it or you can use this to your advantage which upon up for many teammates alike.

Dragapult, again. This monster does not only terrify offensively but now defensively !!! Just kidding, if blaziken gets a sd up you have 25% of not getting ohko'ed by flare blitz. It would require 100 EVs in defense to avoid the ohko by any chance and that is without stealth rock up. I won't bother creating an unset to check blaziken as it won't be competitive. Dragapult need at least to outspeed naturally tapu koko otherwise the pokemon loses every interest offensively. Other than that, if you can pressure blaziken to not get a sd up, dragapult can come in and take a flare blitz easily! thx for reading

+2 252 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Flare Blitz vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dragapult: 304-359 (95.8 - 113.2%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Flare Blitz vs. 0 HP / 100 Def Dragapult: 269-316 (84.8 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Flare Blitz vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dragapult: 152-179 (47.9 - 56.4%) -- 89.1% chance to 2HKO

Quagsire @ Leftovers / Sitrus Berry
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Toxic

Quagsire doesn’t care about how much or little it’s used in OU, and you shouldn’t either. The thing sits on Zacian over in AG, and thanks to its coveted Water/Ground typing, decent defensive stats and access to instant recovery, it can also sit on Blaziken. Quagsire is a Counter Check to Swords Dance Blaziken.

Standard Phys. Def Wall set with Max HP and Max Def + Relaxed nature to take hits from Blaziken forever and 4 SpD EVs to fare better against special hits. Quag isn’t even tickled by Flare Blitz thanks to this, with it only having a slight chance to 5HKO. Thunder Punch can’t hit Quag cause of Ground typing. Close Combat is Blaziken’s most reliable move here, but it only has a 54.7% chance of 2HKO when lucky on Quag, which will recover from the damage as the fried chicken takes recoil from LO anyways.

Unaware ignores Swords Dance boosts and Leftovers gives passive recovery, although Sitrus Berry allows Quag to hit Blaziken with EQ twice while stomaching two Close Combats easier.

Scald only cripples physical attackers that aren’t fire-type or immune to water, but it still nets a guaranteed 2HKO. Earthquake is Quagsire’s best STAB and is a guaranteed 2HKO (with higher damage), with it having a 75% chance to OHKO the fighting foul after Stealth Rock damage. Recover allows Quag to stall out Blaziken as Life Orb recoil takes it down. Toxic makes Blaziken’s time in battle even shorter and threatens any switch-ins with a terrible surprise.
252 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 96-113 (24.3 - 28.6%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 192-227 (48.7 - 57.6%) -- 54.7% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Quagsire Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Blaziken: 164-194 (54.4 - 64.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (Jesus Christ, Blaziken’s defenses are absolutely awful)
0 Atk Quagsire Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Blaziken: 252-296 (83.7 - 98.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

With all of this in mind, Quagsire Counters Checks Blaziken.

CHECK

I didn't want to be boring with bulky dd dnite two weeks in a row, so here's the other main variant. this is obviously more offensive, with appropriate spread for pult at +1 and ground-ice coverage. with the lack of investment, dragonite can't eat blaziken's hits as easily so this is a check and not a counter. however, if multiscale is intact, dragonite can always switch into blaziken by resisting its stabs and win the 1v1 thanks to a powerful earthquake. not much more to say so here's some calcs:

:dragonite: vs :blaziken:
252 Atk Dragonite Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Blaziken: 298-352 (99 - 116.9%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

:blaziken: vs :dragonite:
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Close Combat / Flare Blitz vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 125-148 (38.6 - 45.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Thunder Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 105-124 (32.5 - 38.3%) -- 98.7% chance to 3HKO

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 156 Def / 100 SpD
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Slack Off
- Stealth Rock
- Whirlwind

Hippowdon serves as a good check with its physical bulk and ability to OHKO with Earthquake. The maxed out HP and 156+ Defense (The rest is invested in Special Defense, but you can always add more Defense EVs if needed.) ensures that this monster eats the turkey's STABs when unboosted, and at most lives at +2 after Stealth Rock, allowing for an Earthquake retaliation to demolish the bird at the cost of a lot of health. I regard Hippo as only a check due to the amount of damage it takes at +2 because it does not resist either of the clobbering cock's STABs, as mentioned last sentence.

EARTHQUAKE
0 Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Blaziken: 318-374 (105.6 - 124.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

STABS AT +0 AND ROCKS (using Flare Blitz due to same power as CC and to show recoil)
252 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 156+ Def Hippowdon: 165-196 (39.2 - 46.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery (18 - 21.4% recoil damage)

STABS AT +2 AND ROCKS
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 156+ Def Hippowdon: 331-391 (78.8 - 93%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery (36.2 - 42.8% recoil damage)

Kommo-o @ Leftovers
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 148 Def / 40 SpD / 68 Spe
Impish Nature

- Body Press
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Iron Defense

Kommo-o is a great check to Blaziken, as it resists its STAB in Flare Blitz and its coverage in Thunder Punch. Kommo-o can also setup alongside Blaziken with its Iron defense, to make its Body Press even more dangerous and threatening to not only Blaziken but subsequent Pokemon as well.
Furthermore, after an iron Defense its impossible for a non-boosted Blaziken to break past this Dragon, also it can lay out Stealth Rocks on Blaziken and it can threaten it immediately with Earthquake or Body Press.

calcs:
