[SET COMMENTS]
Steelix's exceptional defensive typing and unmatched Defense stat make it a great asset on Ground teams without sand. Being part-Steel-type lets Steelix deter Toxic for the team and irritates teams like Grass, Fairy, and Dragon teams with Iron Defense. Heavy Slam is vital to check foes like Tapu Bulu and Clefable, which can trouble Steelix with their own setup, and also catches Whimsicott switching in to lock Steelix into a setup move with Encore. Body Press capitalizes on Iron Defense boosts to deal with Pokemon like Zarude, Ferrothorn, and Galarian Darmanitan. Steelix uses Substitute to block Leech Seed users like Ferrothorn, which interfere with its Leftovers recovery, and Iron Defense makes it much more difficult to break. Additionally, Substitute punishes foes like Weavile, Zarude, and Rillaboom switching out of Steelix, as it grants free Iron Defense setup or chip damage with Heavy Slam or Body Press.
Steelix provides neutralities against Grass-types such as Tapu Bulu, Zarude, and Rillaboom and Ice-type Pokemon like Weavile, Arctozolt, and Galarian Darmanitan. Furthermore, Steelix can switch into common Toxic users like Klefki and Blissey for its teammates. Landorus-T is a reliable Ground-immune and Fighting-resistant teammate that can switch into Excadrill and Garchomp. Mamoswine is greatly appreciated for checking opposing Ground-types like Hippowdon, Nidoking, and Garchomp, as well as threatening Dragon- and Flying-types like Kommo-o, Hydreigon, and Galarian Zapdos. Garchomp is an incredibly powerful wallbreaker that checks troublesome Pokemon like Volcarona and Victini. Gastrodon is extremely important to Ground teams for its Water immunity against Pokemon such as Kingdra, Barraskewda, and Volcanion. Nidoking is a potent special wallbreaker that breaks past Pokemon like Corviknight, Thundurus-T, and Tornadus-T with coverage moves in Thunderbolt and Ice Beam. Furthermore, it greatly pressures Aegislash and Komodo, which use Steelix as setup fodder.

Curse is an excellent option instead of Iron Defense, as it allows Steelix to boost Heavy Slam and Body Press simultaneously, but Iron Defense is preferred, as it combats Swords Dance users like Aegislash and Rillaboom. A set with Curse, Rest, Sleep Talk, and Heavy Slam may be used to shrug off burns and improve Steelix's longevity, although Steelix would be losing out on coverage.
