Muurando

Muurando is the new Alpha Dog of B/W, sporting overall solid stats in all the right places. This thread is dedicated to the discussion of the Pokemon competitively, not whether it will or will not be banned (as if it even comes close, but still). Keep that in mind.

Muurando is very interesting because it has a lot of things going for it. Here are a few notable items:
  • Three Fantastic Abilities
Intimidate, Sand Throw, and Scrappy all have excellent uses and gel very well with Muurando's huge movepool. Intimidate can be used for a supporting set, Scrappy has its uses for an attacking set, and Sand Throw can be used for just about anything. Sand Throw also grants him immunity to Sandstorm damage.
  • Decent Support Movepool
Yawn, Thunder Wave, Toxic, and Roar come to mind, while Swagger and Charm have their own Niche.
  • Good Revenging Potential
The fact that he has STAB on Get Even and doubled speed in Sandstorm makes him an ideal revenge killer. Couple this with the fact that he has Pursuit to catch those that try to escape, and you have a potent force indeed.
  • Mediocre Attack Stat, Normal STAB, and Low Power Coverage Moves
Unforunately, however, his base Atk of 100 isn't stellar. It can be increased with the help of Howl / Cheer Up, but it's still nothing compared to the other big threats. But Sand Throw might make up for this. His coverage movepool is also not that big. No Stone Edge, Earthquake, Rock Slide, or any Fighting move worth noting. His elementals are limited to the Fangs, and his strongest coverage comes from Crunch and Wild Bolt.

Despite the lackluster coverage options, he has some interesting and viable sets:

Muurando @ Choice Band
Ability: Sand Throw
EVs: 4HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)
~ Get Even
~ Pursuit
~ Wild Bolt
~ Fire Fang / Ice Fang

With Sand Throw and Choice Band, he works as a fantastic revenge killer with a STAB Get Even. Pursuit to nail Ghosts, and Wild Bolt and your choice of Fang for coverage (depending on what you want to hit).

Muurando @ Life Orb (if it exists) / Leftovers / Silk Scarf
Ability: Sand Throw
EVs: 4HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)
~ Cheer Up
~ Return
~ Crunch
~ Wild Bolt / Fire Fang / Ice Fang / Substitute

Set up sweeper. Could work.

Anyway, there are lot of options here. He's certainly the most unique of the normal types IMO. What do you guys think? Do you think his versatility could earn him a niche amongst the big guns of Gen V, or do you feel that he simply doesn't have enough 'oomph' to make a difference?

In terms of fighting off of a lot of new threats, Muurando seems to be in desperate need of higher attack, or at least some strong priority, and unfortunately it gets neither. He has decent-good defenses 80/90/90 which can be combined with intimidate to allow him to get some Cheer Up boosts in. However his base attack itself, his weak movepool and lackluster speed mean that he probably won't be sweeping much, if at all. In Sandstorm Teams, you'd be hard pressed to use BOTH Muurando and Doryuzuu, though Muurando does things differently from Doryuzuu, his stats might be a bit too small to make enough of an impact. Still, for a Pokemon you get so early on, his stats are rock solid.

I think there might also be a place for a Scarfed set using Scrappy to revenge kill ghosts with Get Even.

Muurando@ Choice Scarf
Scrappy
Jolly; 6 HP/252 ATK/252 SPE
-Get Even/Return
-Wild Bolt
-Fire Fang/Thunder Fang
-Pursuit

Pursuit gives it the option of coming in on a ghost attack, preferably a choiced one, and trapping the ghost.

It seems like it should make a good tank in the lower teirs with Intimidate, good Defenses, and quite a bit of support moves.

Muurando @ Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP/4 Def/252 SpDef
Nature: Careful
Ability: Intimidate

~Thunder Wave/Toxic
~Roar/Yawn
~Return
~Crunch/Payback/Rest

Thunder Wave cripples sweepers, Toxic cripples walls, Roar and Yawn force switches, Return is for STAB, and Crunch/Payback is for Ghosts. Rest is kind of risky but is Muurando's only way of healing.

Also, a set with Rest/Sleep Talk/Cheer Up or Howl/Return with Scrappy could work as well.

Muurando would have been made a bit more interesting if it had Extremespeed, but as it stands now it is comparable to Tauros but with less speed and a poorer movepool. If Muurando tries to utilize Scrappy, it will be comparable to Kangaskhan. Beyond Sand Throw, there isn't much going for him.

It can also cause some irritation (if it gets in safely) with Yawn + Pursuit. It could run this on a bulky spread with Intimidate as the main move. Another option is to do Scrappy + 1 move + Last Resort. That is, however, somewhat gimmicky.

With all of the new fast fighting and ghost-types (unless it is using scrappy, but kangaskhan is better for that role) I am not seeing this thing get far in OU, though it could make an interesting sand sweeper in the lower tiers.

I don't think choiced Normal and Fire attacks will work with Shadow Tag Shanderaa around, especially since his Atk isn't thaaat phenomenal to warrant a CB set. If anything a regular attacker might work with good pace (esp in sandstorm) and decent power.

Muurando@Life Orb
Adamant; Sand Throw
- Return
- Wild Bold
- Crunch
- Get Even/Pursuit (can work like ScarfTar in sandstorm)

Made a thread didn't find this one oh well...copy pasta time.

Muurando throwing things in reverse

Ability: Sand Throw (scrappy if available)
Item: Liechi/Salac Berry
Evs: 252 attack, 252 speed
Nature: Jolly/Adamant
Moves: Return, Crunch/Cheer up, Reversal, Endure

Under my understanding sand throw gives Muurando immunity to sandstorm much like Cacturne?

You don't need Salac if you're running Sand Throw. Use Liechi instead.

I have a fun set

Blood hound set

Adamant~intimidate/scrappy
Eva:40hp/200def/220attack/50speed
Recommended item: life orb/ leftovers

Yawn
Get even
Pursuit
Thunder fang/protect

This set is made to scare your opponents off with first stat drops then the fear of potiental sleep status then depending on what you feel will happen next you choose your move. If you think they will run away fire off the pursuit. If you believe they will stay in get even with them or cripple them with a thunder fang. This set could also be used to scout out moves by yawning and if you are afraid a pokemon might have sleep talk or something just protect wait a turn the decide on your next move

100 is good... not mediocre... >.<

LoL in this gen? 100 is only just enough to scrape by it seems, with so many physical attackers available 100 is sooo easy to pass up.

To bad it doesn't get flail... but still, with sandstorm immunity and the speed boost from sand throw it could run a reversal set (but as we all know, thats a gimmick in and of itself).

100 may not be mediocre, but it is decidedly average. You'll note that the majority of the 100 Atk/SpA users often compensate with either type coverage, high BP moves, or a stat booster.

-Starmie: LO + STAB Hydro Pump AND coverage of BoltBeam are what make it so effective.

-Jirachi: Elemental Punches help it scrape by, Thunderbolt and large special movepool as well as CM. Plus it has Iron Flinch, which is a bit of an exception.

-Manaphy: Tail Glow + Type Coverage

-Infernape: The 4 Attack LO set relies on coverage and high BP, you won't find it breaking walls early game at all.

-Shaymin: Coverage + High Base Power of Seed Flare

Even still, some pokemon fail to be threatening. Flygon is notorious for its depressingly weak Outrage, while physical Jirachi scrapes by on coverage and flinching alone, as mentioned above.

Muurando will really need to find its niche. Scrappy is done better by Exploud and Khanghaskhan, arguably, so Sand Throw might be its best option.

Scrappy Extremespeed would have been incredible, and would have given this guy a solid niche. The other notable dogs (Lucario & Arcanine) get Extremespeed, why not Muurando?

Muurando reminds me a lot of a Normal Type Poliwrath when it comes to stats.

He has a relatively nice stat spread that allows him to do nearly anything, but only if he specializes in it. He would've enjoyed something like Swords Dance or a new stat up move (though a SD set would make him like an inferior Doryuzuu) but given what he has, he has a decent amount of options with moves like Yawn, Roar, Wild Bolt, Crunch, Toxic, and Thunder Wave.

While he also gets Pursuit, he probably doesn't make the best use of it, as nothing is really immediately threatened by him, but it is an option for trap killing.

Really, just slap a Life Orb on him and have him pick off/weaken stuff for your haymaker, Doryuuzu. Of course, it's not going to be that simple to do against anyone decent, especially stall, but that's really the best thing he can do ATM. Sand Throw is just way too good for him to bother with anything else.

Keep in mind, however, that if you DO go Dory/Rando, you're doubling up on a Fighting weakness, and by extension, a Roopushin weakness. I don't think Breloom is something you'd want to see either. Better have an awesome Fighting type counter up your sleeve.

Well, 100 I think is better than mediocre. Something like swellow is mediocre.

With sand throw, I do think he could be a great revenge killer. Get even has 140 bp, together with stab (210), then choice band (315) off a base 100 attack.

Base attack doesn't really matter too much, it's how you use it. Lucario just has 110 base attack for example.

I'd rather let Sandslash do that actually. Sandslash boasts higher attacking power and Swords Dance, as well as much better STAB and coverage moves (Earthquake+Stone Edge+Shadow Claw/X-Scissor+Swords Dance). You won't pick up a double Fighting weakness either. However you ARE getting a capital Water weakness (Especially since you'll run TTar/Hippo as well), so best run something like Suicune/Vaporeon/Nattorei/Pringles as well. However, since Priority Water is a lot more rare then Priority Fighting, I think its a fair tradeoff. Also Sandslash's physical defense is pretty awesome.

As for this guy though...his coverage is too lacking to try it, IMO. I peg him for a powerful Scrappy attacker lower tiers, or perhaps a partner of Hippopotas in UU and such.

Not a bad looking dog. This one looks great sandstormteam pokémon. Other abilitys are good too, but Muurando need definetly that speed. How many pokemon have Sand Throw? He is actually as fast as Doryuuzu. Defens stats are OK, but fighting pokémon will OHKO him. So Muurando has potential and I think that revenge killer is the best way use him. Muurando does not have time for set ups, maybe in lower tiers.
