Walking Wake finds a lot of opportunities to set up a Substitute against defensive Pokemon that don't threaten to break it like Dondozo, Slowking, and non-Assault Vest Toxapex aswell as on switches that it forces by threatening meta staples like Great Tusk, Ting-Lu, and Hydreigon. Substitute relieves the need for prediction, protects Walking Wake from revenge killing attempts, and allows Walking Wake to avoid residual damage from Garganacl's Salt Cure. Hydro Steam's power boost in sun makes it desirable both on and against sun teams. If this attribute is not sought after by the team Walking Wake finds itself on, then Hydro Pump can be run instead. Roar prevents Pokemon like Terastallized Volcarona and Garganacl, as well as Belly Drum Azumarill from setting up on Walking Wake. It is also a good way for Walking Wake to make progress via residual entry hazard damage even when the opposition has a counter like Water Absorb Clodsire, Assault Vest Toxapex, or specially defensive Dondozo. However, Flamethrower can be used instead to round out Walking Wake's coverage, doing more damage to Pokemon like Kingambit, Amoonguss, and Corviknight. Flamethrower also gains a boost in power from sun, which alongside the Protosynthesis boost can allow Flamethrower to OHKO the aforementioned targets. Tera Water increases the damage output of its Water-type STAB move, potentially 2HKOing on Pokemon like Kingambit, Gholdengo, and Corviknight. Tera Dragon powers up Dragon Pulse, allowing it to OHKO Garchomp, Baxcalibur, and Hydreigon. Finally, Tera Fairy removes Walking Wake's original weaknesses, allowing for surprise KOs on Dragon-types like opposing Walking Wake and especially Dragapult—a thorn in Walking Wake's side because of Infilitrator nullifying Substitute—as well as others like Kingambit and Iron Valiant.
Walking Wake is a sun team staple, so of course it is often paired with other sun team staples like Torkoal and Eject Button Hatterene. Torkoal sets sun with Drought, which gives Walking Wake a boost to its Special Attack and makes it an even more threatening wallbreaker. Torkoal is also good at forcing switches with Yawn, which gives Walking Wake opportunities to come in. Hatterene also provides a switch-in opportunity thanks to Eject Button, and it can also regenerate Walking Wake with Healing Wish, giving it more chances to wallbreak. Both can prevent irksome entry hazards either via Rapid Spin or Magic Bounce, a valuable attribute, as damage inflicted by hazards, most notably Toxic Spikes, limits Walking Wake's wallbreaking potential. Because Dragapult is such an issue for this set, Pokemon that can take advantage of it like Kingambit, Iron Valiant, and Ting-Lu are good partners for Walking Wake. Walking Wake has numerous roadblocks that stop it from making much progress like Water Absorb Clodsire, Assault Vest Toxapex, and Slowking; additional wallbreakers like Great Tusk, Roaring Moon, and mixed Garchomp to smash through them are appreciated. Hazard setters like the aforementioned Great Tusk, Garchomp, and Torkoal are indispensable as allies, for their hazards wear down checks and punish forced switches, be it through threatening the opposition or by phazing via Roar.
