Suspect Warstory: Exploring a Brave New Meta

Alright folks, my first warstory here. Hope it is interesting.

My team is as follows:

googlyeyesultra's moves will look like this.
crushed feelings's moves will look like this.
Other text will look like this.
My post-battle comments will look like this.
Leftovers will be removed.
Sandstorm/hail damage will be removed.
Scores will be shown after each KO.

I'm running a bulky uxie (non-trickscarf) lead designed to ensure rocks goes down and just generally not have any awful matchups. As such, I can't really touch bronzong at all, but he's not going to do much damage to me immediately. The threat of explosion is really the only big deal, and I'd probably rather have uxie take that then anything else. I changed out a rotom for a gyarados last game so I don't really have an explosion absorber persay. . .

I donno if bronzong is staying in or not this turn. Either way, however, firing off a yawn seems like a solid option. I'll either provoke an early explosion or scout his team a little bit.

First off, yay, I have a spectator.

Well, bronzong decided to stay in. He's either exploding or switching next turn, and given bronzong's bulk, he's probably switching out. Scizor is a pretty common switch in to uxie due to uturn and in the off chance that he decides to explode instead of switch, a switch to magnezone will cover that possibility. A slop here: I should have hit u-turn anyways for scouting purposes. The threat of explosion makes me do dumb things.

Pointed stones dug into Magnezone.
Magnezone lost 6% of its health.
crushed feelings switched in Flygon (lvl 100 Flygon ?).
Pointed stones dug into Flygon.
Flygon lost 6% of its health.
---

In comes zone hoping to meet a scizor, but instead I stumble upon a flygon. Flygon tends to spam uturn early game: if he opts to do that then I could put up a free sub here. On the other hand, there are pretty good odds that he's got something that magnezone can't punch through, even with a sub. Furthermore, if he decides to make the obvious play and EQ, I'll wind up with a dead zone. Covering both the threat of uturn and EQ leaves me with two options: my bulky ddgyara or my CBNite. I opt to play it safe here and go for gyara, as lefties will recover SR damage for him, while CBNite will be permanently hampered.

googlyeyesultra switched in Gyarados (lvl 100 Gyarados ?).
Gyarados's Intimidate cut Flygon's attack!
Pointed stones dug into Gyarados.

crushed feelings switched in Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).
Pointed stones dug into Starmie.
Starmie lost 12% of its health.

Well, alright. The safe play naturally wound up with a fairly mediocre situation. I have an unboosted gyara staring down a starmie, probably carrying tbolt. He's got two options: tbolt for gyarados or use something else to hit a switchin hard. Time to get greedy. I'm going for a DD: if he overpredicts me I've got a good shot at a sweep here and if not then I've got a free switchin to something to scare starmie off.

Pedro, the random spectator, decides one of us is crazy, probably me, and even before he sees my move. My opponent makes the conservative choice and ends my hopes of an early sweep. Alas.

I decide to bring in uxie: uturn will hurt starmie a fair amount and cover me if he switches. Starmie also can't do all that much to uxie, really, although I guess he might get off a spin.

googlyeyesultra switched in Jirachi (lvl 100 Jirachi).
Pointed stones dug into Jirachi.
Jirachi lost 6% of its health.
---

Flygon comes in, scout that he is, and takes a little bit of residual damage. Thankfully getting residual on things like flygon is very helpful as CBNite's extremespeed tends to do around 70% to things like that. I bring in my scarfrachi: I know it'll be easy to switch in on, but he can't uturn in the threat of an ice punch. I'll get the residual damage going his way.

crushed feelings switched in Bronzong (lvl 100 Bronzong).
Pointed stones dug into Bronzong.
Bronzong lost 6% of its health.
Jirachi used Ice Punch.
It's not very effective...
Bronzong lost 9% of its health.
---

Bronzong comes in again, alas, alas. He's done his job: he's probably exploding soon. Jirachi resists it and doesn't really rely on having much health to revenge things usually, especially since I haven't seen any priority users on his side. As such I'm going to throw out another ice punch and let jirachi take the inevitable explosion.

crushed feelings switched in Flygon (lvl 100 Flygon ?).

---

Well, hmm. In retrospect that makes a lot of sense, as had I not been afraid of explosion I would have switched and flygon could have gotten some free uturn damage on something. Instead I wind up getting a free kill, evening the score out.

He brings out infernape, something this meta has in overabundance. Naturally I can't do much of anything with ice punch and he'll kill me very, very quickly, or worse set up in my face. However, I'm carrying starmie, one of the best infernape counters, as well as uxie, gyarados, and dragonite, all of whom check infernape pretty well. Starmie however is the best choice, able to recover damage off and present an immediate threat. (I'm running the LO set with Surf/Tbolt/Recover/Rapid Spin).

crushed feelings switched in Infernape (lvl 100 Infernape ?).
Pointed stones dug into Infernape.
Infernape lost 12% of its health.

It's not very effective...
Starmie lost 51% of its health.
Infernape's special attack was harshly lowered.
Infernape lost 10% of its health.
---

Starmie eats an overheat coming in, which probably means this is a primarily physical ape, without grass knot or HP ice. He may be carrying stone edge however, so I need to be careful about gyara and nite coming in on him. Still, he can't really hurt me, so now is the perfect time to heal up that damage.

crushed feelings switched in Shaymin (lvl 100 Shaymin).
Pointed stones dug into Shaymin.
Shaymin lost 12% of its health.
Starmie used Recover.
Starmie restored 50% of its health.
---

Shaymin comes in, and as I mentioned, I'm not running ice beam. He can pretty safely seed flare here too as even if I had ice beam it wouldn't OHKO. Despite the obvious Nite option, I haven't gotten SR off yet and I'd like to try to get residual out of the way. He also might be carrying HP Ice which, of course, would be very, very bad for CBNite. Uxie is a safe choice, able to come in and sponge a hit and then uturn for some damage.

googlyeyesultra switched in Uxie (lvl 100 Uxie).
Pointed stones dug into Uxie.
Uxie lost 12% of its health.

googlyeyesultra switched in Dragonite (lvl 100 Dragonite ?).
Pointed stones dug into Dragonite.
Dragonite lost 25% of its health.
---

Well, he didn't switch out. I'm basically forced to go to dragonite here, but with the residual damage he's got he's probably in range for extremespeed to kill him and I didn't eat an attack on the way in. Espeed it is, please don't survive and HP Ice me.

Alright, good. He got an attack in there, but he's still dead and it didn't do all that much, so I suppose he was running hp fire or leech seed over hp ice. He's pretty obviously going to bring in an espeed resist, so let's see what it is.

Jirachi comes in: a lefties variant. I'm thinking something like a CM set or maybe the subtwave rachi. Magnezone fares pretty well against a lot of variants so he's a solid choice to bring in here.

Wish screams either Wish/CM or a support set. Time to see using the best move in the game: substitute.

Alright. He's running something like the slow wish support jirachi, one that tends to be bulky and carry uturn/wish/ironhead/filler. He decides to bring in bronzong, probably meaning he's carrying EQ on it. I figure I'll confirm and at least get a little damage on him now, although it'll be a struggle to kill it with jirachi wishpassing.

Alright, good. He killed my uxie, now to decide what I want him to blow up. Jirachi and magnezone both resist explosion and probably won't die from it, and as such are the obvious options. Starmie, however, feels like a better choice. I've got infernape covered pretty solidly starmie isn't posing enough of an offensive threat right now. Furthermore, starmie can actually do something with that one turn it gets: it can spin. Go go rapid spinner!

Apparently pedro feels it is time to leave; this, however, is when the game gets interesting.

We're standing at a sub+3 attacks magnezone, CBNite, and scarfrachi vs. an overheat infernape, wishpass jirachi, and a starmie. The endgame is beginning.

That turn went basically as expected. Bronzong the exploding menace dies and starmie trades its life to get rid of stealth rock. Good job starmie.

I decide to bring out jirachi now: infernape is probably coming out, but he's pretty manageable. Magnezone can only afford to come out on jirachi, and dragonite can afford to come in really whenever but can't afford to accumulate damage. Every percent will count.

I opted for an iron head, as it's the most damaging thing I can really do. I fully expected to be roasted here, but hey, if I can soften things up a little bit then CBNite will win this game, right? I just need to keep starmie really from wrecking anything. Furthermore, I can afford to keep switching and firing off weak attacks: he has SR on his side and I don't.

Jirachi comes in on my iron head against my expectations. This is really the only place to get magnezone in, and odds are if I can get a sub up with zone then I can get a kill and begin cleaning up.

As I expected: Jirachi comes in to take the espeed. I suspect he's going to uturn here: he knows I basically have to switch and if I let him get either of his offensive pokes in without hindrance I've basically lost. I need to take the uturn here and stay in: if I can outmaneuver jirachi I've won, but if he manages to outpredict me then I'll be in a major bind.

Shitshitshitshit. . . Alright. He stayed in. There are two possibilities: one, he's staying in and probably killing my dragonite. Two, he's uturning out, healing up his infernape. If I switch while he attacks then I can get a sub up on magnezone and win this, but if I switch while he uturns then at best I can force infernape out once with dragonite, at which point jirachi will come in and clean up.

I'm saving dragonite. Let's go magnezone.

Hopefully you all enjoyed the warstory, although admittedly I'm not a top-tier player, I felt it had some pretty good plays and that the teams reflected how the meta was developing. I'm open to questions/comments/suggestions as to the warstory, my team, or why I did something.

Here is crushed feelings's team:
Bronzong the exploding menace.
Starmie the scary sweeper.
Jirachi: the thing standing in the way of an Espeed sweep.
Infernape, the other scary sweeper.
Shaymin, the not very scary sweeper because I killed it early on.
Flygon, the scout that got hit with a random ice punch.

Good game.

Good warstory. Could have used more comments in some places, but it's okay since I only realized this after reading it. Percentages would have really helped, especially after that painful stall war.

I actually think that this was a very good Warstory. The Ice Punch on Flygon was definitely rather amusing, but all in all, the battle didn't have many real bad plays.

Sure, percentages would have been nice, especially to see what was in range of CBNite's range, and pictures always help, but as it is, it is quite good!

The only gripe I had was that you could have tried to pay better attention to how much damage Jirachi was doing and then Substituted accordingly (right after the stall war), but if that was simply a misprediction and not a miscalculation, it's not so bad.

All in all, that was, I'd say, in the upper 50% by quality of Warstories. Good job! (And thanks for writing it; it does help to show that Dragonite is starting to get some attention with Salamence not there to put a shadow on it, and his niches are starting to be exploited.)

Not bad for a first attempt, but you made a couple of nasty mistakes. Not U-turning at the start meant you lost a chance at an early Gyarados sweep, and your sacrifice of Gyarados to Starmie was lackluster, to say the least. Just FYI, a timid Starmie outspeeds Gyarados after DD, so you were fucked unless he switched.

Still, pretty solid and interesting. Comments weren't terrible, but could be better. 6/10.

Just FYI, a timid Starmie outspeeds Gyarados after DD, so you were fucked unless he switched.
Uh no it doesn't, the Gyarados sets on the analysis (well maybe not the rest-talk one but the offensive and bulky dancer ones) outrun all base 115's after a Dragon Dance

Pretty good warstory, you had a couple of good predictions in there and the comments explained pretty well. I'd say 8/10.

You missed a decent battle then :p

Sure, there were a couple of questionable moves, but I don't think that was one of them. I realize Magnezone is good when it is hidden but if a team is especially weak to Scizor this can make the opponent play a more cautious game.

Overall a good battle, good effort on the write up too!

Pictures every turn would have made it better. :( Im just a sucker for pretty pictures I guess. Anyway, pretty good battle. Like Ala said, couple of iffy moves here and there, but we all make mistakes from time to time.

While the battle itself was only decent, the comments were pretty good for a first time. Both of you made a couple mistakes and you were a bit paanoid about explosion, but in the end, it was a good battle. nice job

Yay. Glad you all like the warstory and all. Admittedly some of the presentation was a bit lacking, but meh.

I'll try and find some more reasonably good battles and write moar warstories.

Thanks all.

P.S. You should all run CBNite in suspect. He's awesome. Also lead uxie in standard or suspect, as he's pretty awesome too.

Also, regarding saccing gyarados on starmie, well, starmie is really hard to switch into. I figured that a free switch was a decent outcome even if I predicted wrong.

The battle was pretty good and hey you actually said what you were GOING to do before the log showed up.

The blue and red was annoying, but I was able to look past it. Screw the haters saying pictures are needed: they aren't.

Agreed. But, running percentages can be very helpful, even if they are time consuming.

I thought the battle was a good one. It was fun to hear your plan for the endgame then watch it unfold before our eyes, with all the little bumps and turns it entailed. 8/10

The battle is pretty nice. You did make a few rookie moves though. After Uxie Yawned and died, you should have switched Magnezone to Substitute while he either exploded or use Earthquake and fell asleep. That would have made you win a lot earlier. There were a few other silly moves too, no horrible moves were made though. I liked the comments though.

Nice battle, I enjoyed reading it and it made me want to go play a team with Magnezone(That and a few RMT teams are weak to it).

I didn't see any "dumb" moves, and honestly people make mistakes. The overpredictions are always nice to see take place, as it shows both of you were thinking. GG and I'll love to see your next Warstory.

Good read and nice battle being relevant all the way to the end. Like your comments, specially the ones on what you predicted, but at some points I wish you could have added a little more. Overall, a good read and hope to read a future war story from you.

Hmm, the beginning was fairly boring. But I read on and it got better so it was a pretty good warstory And good job. Dragonite is full of win. 7/10

Meh, I consider leaving Gyrara in on Starmie to be a horrid play. Starmies are fast enough that they can afford to pick the obvious move and then outspeed the next foe to come in. Since percentages aren't listed, I don't know what Uxie was at, but it woulda been a good switch-in.

Good attempt and decent comments.

6/10.

A couple of mistakes at the beginning, but the battle really picked up towards mid/endgame.

Even better is that you at least realized your mistakes and made note of that in the comments.

A very nice first attempt.

Nice Warstory, I enjoyed it. And thank you for leaving out the stall war (that could have been boring ;-))
