The Next Best Thing is a project where the users can submit & search for various creative but viable Pokemon sets, utilising the power of various underlooked & unexpected moves/items, or a combination of both in a set.

Here, you'll find many sets that might seem vague, but in reality carves out a niche in this metagame. These sets are excellent at acting as a surprise factor, which can totally change the the match. You may also find how potent a Pokemon can be by looking, playing & even creating some out-of-the-box sets, that are definitely unworthy at first sight.

The sets here posted should obviously be viable, avoiding jokes such as Choice Band Blissey that can't be taken serious. Posting meme sets will also drive the host crazy.

Procedure
  • Every cycle (1 per week), a new Pokemon will be chosen for participants to create a new, creative yet effective sets.
  • All the existing sets (or WIPs) on the Smogdex are disallowed.
  • The participants will get a period to submit their sets in this forum.
  • Voting will be held to select the winner each week.
  • All the winning sets will be kept in the Hall of Fame.
Rules and Regulations
  • Be as creative as possible, but your creativity must also show some viability.
  • You may only post 1 set per cycle.
  • You are not allowed to take sets from Smogdex & WIPs.
  • Making some minor changes in the existing sets of Smogdex won't work.
  • Set explanation is a must.
  • Be detailed with your sets & replies as much as you can. You may (please) include Replies, teammates options, threats, usage tips, & even a team built around the set.
  • You are allowed to suggest potential changes in others' sets, if it doesn't bother him/her.
  • You are allowed to reserve a set, but please make sure to complete your submission before the deadline.
  • You can't vote for your own set.
  • Try to avoid double-posting.
  • At last, the most important rule. Just Have Fun!

Hi, I'm very thrilled to restart this project!
Week 1: Raging Bolt
1707080425652.png
Let's begin with this new DLC2 staple! Raging Bolt has already significantly affected the metagame with its threatening power and Thunderclap. Can you spark some new lightning with it?
Raging Bolt @ Leftovers / Booster Energy
Ability: Protosynthesis
EVs: 64 HP / 28 Def / 252 SpA / 164 Spe
IVs: 20 Atk
Tera Type: Fairy
Modest Nature
- Calm Mind
- Thunderclap
- Dragon Pulse / Draco Meteor
- Thunderbolt / Weather Ball
Submissions Deadline: Sunday Feb 11, 11:59 GMT-5
Voting Deadline: Wednesday Feb 14, 11:59 GMT-5

Whoo! So glad this is back!

Anyway...
Double Weather Bolt
:sv/raging bolt:

Raging Bolt @ Life Orb
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor/Dragon Pulse/Volt Switch/Thunderbolt/Thunderclap/Calm Mind
- Solar Beam
- Thunder
- Weather Ball
Can be used under rain or sun if you run Thunder. Fun set, Solar Beam is always... interesting... to use, covering fire and electric's resistances in water and ground well, meanwhile the rain mode with Thunder and Weather Ball is tried and tested. First slot is whatever you want between an extra Electric move or Dragon STAB, or even CM (although it is a bit slower on weather teams). Choose what you want!
I'm so bothered by the fact you spelt it lightening, can you please change it?
Do you know the reason why it has 20 Atk IVs on the banned set, because it has no physical moves and will just take more from Confusion/Foul Play? If there's a benchmark, I don't know. Thanks AyushKr_PKMN for answering!

Electric Terrain Setter
Raging Bolt @ Terrain Extender
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 20 Atk
- Electric Terrain
- Rising Voltage / Thunderbolt / Thunderclap
- Calm Mind / Thunderclap
- Dragon Pulse / Draco Meteor

Used as an e-terrain setter that can utilize the terrain by itself, but best paired with mons that can utilize electric terrain. Calm mind for extra special bulk, can swap out terrain extender for leftovers if you need recovery. Can swap out calm mind for thunderclap if priority is needed along with making Bolt specially defensive. Watch out for Treads and Tusk (not as much as Treads, but still be wary), you don't have any counters with this set, so pair with something that can deal with Treads and Tusk, such as Valiant, Gliscor, or Ogerpon-Wellspring.

Hi guys,
I'm trying some funny one:

Choice Band Raging Bolt
Raging Bolt @ Choice Band
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fairy / Steel
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 20 Atk / 6 SpA
- Supercell Slam
- Dragon Hammer / Outrage
- Earthquake
- Tera Blast / Heavy Slam / Volt Switch

With its modest Attack stat of 73, the same as Volbeat, Raging Bolt doesn’t take up a physical profile in OU. However, associated with Choice Band, its wide movepool and the surprise of its set, it can be used as a great wallbreaker to threaten many Pokemon of the tier. Supercell Slam is a strong Electric-type STAB, although its precision of 95 makes it less reliable because of its secondary effect. Dragon Hammer is also a good STAB, enabling Raging Bolt to hit Ground-types. Outrage can be used over Dragon Hammer as a stronger Dragon-type move, but it will block Raging Bolt for 2 or 3 rounds, letting the opponent switch on Steel or Fairy-types and weaken it. Raging Bolt also has access to great coverage options. Earthquake is helpful against other Raging Bolt, Poison-types like Galarian Slowing and Glimmora, Fire-types such as Gouging Fire, Heatran, and Cinderace and Steel-types like Kingambit, Gholdengo without Air Balloon, Archaludon, and Iron Treads. The last slot is flexible; Tera Blast Fairy can be used for better matchups against Great Tusk and Dark/Dragon-types such as Roaring Moon, Darkrai, Meowscadra, other Raging Bolt, Dragapult, Kyurem, and Dragonite; Heavy Slam enables it to hit effectively Fairy-types that threaten it like Iron Valiant, Enamorus, and Hatterene, and Ice-types such as Kyurem and Weavile; Volt Switch helps it to keep momentum and switch against counters or checks. Tera Fairy provides a Dragon-type immunity for better matchups against Pokemon of this type, getting rid of its weaknesses to Ground, Fairy, and Ice-type moves, whereas with Tera Steel, Raging Bolt gains a STAB on Heavy Slam, valuable resistances to Fairy, Dragon, Rock for Stealth Rock damage, and Ice-type moves, and an immunity to Poison-type moves, to Toxic, and to Toxic Spikes, in exchange for weaknesses to Fire and Fighting-type moves. The 20 IVs in Attack are compulsory because Raging Bolt is only obtainable from an event, and 6 IVs in Special Attack allows Tera Blast to become a physical move while its Attack will be boosted under sun.
Choice Band Raging Bolt can threaten its usual checks, OHKOing Heatran with Earthquake, while 2HKOing Galarian Slowking and Clodsire with Earthquake, bulky Volcarona, Blissey, and Toxapex with Supercell Slam, and Hatterene with Heavy Slam. However, Raging Bolt is walled by Great Tusk, Zamazenta, and Ting-Lu if used without Tera Blast Fairy, and by Gliscor, and its low speed tier of 75 allows it to get easily revenge kill by most of offensive Pokemon of the tier. In addition, Raging Bolt shouldn’t be Knocked Off or Tricked because without Choice Band, it would lose power and wouldn’t be able to deal much damage.

Choice Band Raging Bolt is a great option in Bulky Offense and sun teams. As it lacks reliable recovery moves, especially without Leftovers, teammates with Healing Wish or Wish, such as Enamorus, Hatterene, Alomomola and Clefable can offer a great suppot to Raging Bolt. Moreover, entry hazards setters like Ting-Lu, Glimmora and Skarmory synergize well with it as their hazards will help Raging Bolt to insure the OHKO on Pokemon like Kingambit. Additionally, Raging Bolt having to switch often, it needs some hazard control, so hazards remover such as Great Tusk, Iron Treads, Excadrill, Torkoal and Corviknight will help it. Torkoal particularly would be a very good teammate for Raging Bolt, as it sets the sun to boost further its power.

I'm open to your questions and remarks!

BoltBeam Raging Bolt

:sv/raging bolt:

Raging Bolt @ Expert Belt
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Ice
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 20 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Draco Meteor
- Thunderbolt
- Tera Blast

This set requires Sun support from your team to work at its best, but it is still good without this support.
We all know that BoltBeam coverage is a good combination of attacking moves to achieve a good amount of coverage with two moveslots. Raging Bolt can make up for the lack of Ice Beam with Tera Blast if you use Tera Ice on an incoming Ground-type pokemon that may enter into one of your Electric moves. The movepool of Raging Bolt has a bad case of 4MMS, so I had to drop Thunderclap to use the more reliable Thunderbolt and, most importantly, Volt Switch to keep the momentum. Volt Switch is particularly useful in this set with Draco Meteor. Tera Blast Ice is not mandatory, but it can sometimes get rid of careless Ground pokemons.

Expert Belt is here because it is not so easy to detect for the opponent and doesn't have recoil such as Life Orb.

I got a fun set to break up the monotony of rain (Peli, Archi, Barra, and Treads)

I've never like Barraskewda on rain, It always was too fast and strong and weird for my taste so I have a replacement + Counter

TalonRain (Talonflame) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Gale Wings
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hurricane
- Air Slash
- Fire Blast
- U-turn

SPECS TALONFLAME With gale 100% accurate hurricanes in the rain it ohkos Barra, Val, Meow, great tusk, waterpon, 50% chance Deo speed kill and other threats across the meta.
It also OHKOS Phys def corv, most Iron treads, and other steel/grass/bug/ice with fire blast only use it for super effective or hurricane resist
It with tera flying it can tear through teams after your rain terrorizer of choice softens the specially bulky ones up
Air slash: I don't want to miss hurricane when rain is down
U-Turn is U-turn

Functions:
-Sweep ender: It's a priority 110 bp move that's to be expected
-End Game Cleaner: See Above
Wall breaker: It isn't the best at this as you need to be at full hp to retain your priority but if they expect a phys move like Brave bird you might keep something in for you to pick off

Teammates:
Pelliper: its a rain mon so duh
Archialadon: Its a rain team so duh
Hazard Clearance: I like Iron Treads but Great tusk, Exadrill, Corviknight and others work just as well
Rain terrorizor (Phys): I don't like barra but thats a personal thing, Basculeigon-M, Waterpon, Sam-H and others work fine
Hazards: They break sturdy and sash 2 things that can ruin your gale wings: Sam-H, Glimm, Gliscor, Tusk, Treads, Deo-Speed
Rain terrorizor (Special): If you want to go the overload rout you could addmons like Raging Bolt, Walking Wake, Primarina, Zapdos.

Tldr-Build a rain team
REMEMBER I am not building your team feel free to be creative and not blame me when it doesn't work

Now for the downsides:
-Priority-phobia: Priority that is faster than you or sucker punch/Espeed loses your gale wings. You are still 351 speed but gale loss hurts as you can't kill setup mons
-Rocks-phobia: Its talonflame without boots what did you expect
-Minor Anti-Synergy: If a steel mon you need to F-Blast arrives while rain is up you will probably deal better damage with hurricane
-74 base spa hurts: That's not much for a primary attacking stat - Same as alolamolas primary attacking stat. Don't get me wrong the moves carry your damage but you could do so much more
-Flying is not great offensively: You can't hit Mons like raging bolt for neutral damage so you will be playing the switching game

TLDR- Goofy little bird uses hurricane on small town
Hi, thank you for your interest! However, this thread might not be the best place to share this set. We're currently accepting sets for Raging Bolt, and this might be a better fit for Heat project.

Defensive Booster Energy
Raging Bolt @ Booster Energy
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 116 HP / 252 Def / 140 Spe
Bold Nature

IVs: 20 Atk / 30 SpA
- Calm Mind
- Thunderbolt
- Thunderclap / Body Press
- Tera Blast / Dragon Pulse / Draco Meteor

The uniqueness here comes in the EV spread. 252 Defense with a Bold nature and 30 IVs in Special Attack allow Raging Bolt to boost its Defense instead of its Special Attack. Once it gets a Calm Mind up, it can have a +1 in Defense, Special Attack, and Special Defense, with enough speed to outspeed Kingambit. I threw in Body Press because it is certainly an option to surprise Blissey and Ting-Lu, but I preferred other moves when testing. I also included Dragon Pulse and Draco Meteor as options if you don't want to sacrifice Tera. This set pairs well with Rillaboom as Grassy Terrain gives it better protection against Earthquakes and Headlong Rushes from Great Tusk.

Here's the team Finch built around it for Secret Santa:

Primarina @ Choice Specs
Ability: Torrent
Tera Type: Steel/Fighting
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
- Psychic Noise
- Surf
- Draining Kiss
- Shadow Ball/Tera Blast
Specs Primarina is quite a good mon into the rain meta, as it can do quite well into anything not named Archaludon, unless you use tera blast fighting, which gives up a bit on your defensive utility of tera steel, but does work better if you can take care of arch extremely well. Shadow Ball was chosen because it has a chance to OHKO offensive Gholdengo, which is a hard wall to prim normally, though surf does great damage regardless. Flip turn is a move you can slot in to get some momentum, though I find staying in and clicking a move is usually better.
Some calcs:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Primarina Shadow Ball vs. 204 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Archaludon: 134-158 (36 - 42.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Primarina Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gholdengo: 304-358 (96.5 - 113.6%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Tera Fighting Primarina Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 204 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Archaludon: 402-474 (108 - 127.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Barraskewda Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Primarina in Rain: 212-249 (58.2 - 68.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Primarina Surf vs. 248 HP / 36 SpD Pelipper in Rain: 227-267 (70.2 - 82.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Primarina Psychic Noise vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Clodsire: 192-226 (41.4 - 48.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

PerishTrapMarina
:sv/primarina:
Primarina @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Ghost/Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Perish Song
- Shadow Ball/Encore
- Whirlpool
- Protect
So. Perish Trap. What does it mean? So, you trap something (In this case with Whirlpool) then you use Perish Song. All things which are on screen when you sing the song die in 3 turns. So, you Perish Song, Protect, Tank 1 Hit, Protect, Switch Out as the other mon faints.
Perish Song+Whirlpool because that's the whole point of Perish Trap. Next, Protect is added to stall 2 turns. Now, ghosts can't be trapped by Whirlpool, so Shadow Ball+Tera Ghost hits (ok) uninvested, but you can use Tera Steel+Encore to disrupt. Torrent is here for that little kick in power.
