Metagames are constantly changing, and OU is no exception. Each generation, we are beheld to tier staples, absolute top threats, and the like.
The concept of this project is to find countermeasures to said threats in the current OU metagame. Every week, I will submit a victim for you so that you can submit checks or counters to the pokemon. Then, after submissions are placed in, voters will vote which ones are the most effective in their eyes.

Rules:
1. When nominating your check/counter take a gander at The Smog:
Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

There are some parts of those definitions that may be confusing to the unfamiliar, so now I'm going to make sure we're all on the same page. "Hax" does not mean cheats or codes used to win. "Hax" means, loosely, things that have a chance of happening but usually don't, for example, critical hits (under most circumstances), Ice Beam freezing, and Fire Blast missing. This means that we don't take into account these types of things when we analyze if one Pokémon checks or counters another. Despite this, it's unwise to declare that one Pokémon checks another when the victorious Pokémon relies on hitting Focus Blast three times in a row, or something like that. Basically, you're often okay ignoring hax unless something that doesn't have a high chance of happening must happen in order for a Pokémon to check or counter another.

There are some things, like flinching, which you would normally consider to be hax but aren't always so. For example, Jirachi has a 60% chance to flinch a slower opponent with Iron Head, so in this case, flinching is not hax because it happens over half the time. For things such as missing or secondary effects, such as a Scald burn or Special Defense drop from Seed Flare, that have a decently high chance of happening, you need to think about them when you analyze checks or counters. Even though they might fit the standard definition of hax, they happen often enough for you to expect to see them in real situations somewhat commonly. There's no official or best guideline, but in my opinion, if some form of "hax" has a 30% chance or higher of happening, you should keep it in the back of your mind because it's not a negligible occurrence.

2. Only post Pokemon sets that are viable in OU. Try to stick to the mons on the Viability Rankings.
3. Reservations are allowed, however if you don't complete your post within 24 hours someone else is free to take your Pokemon.
4. You can correct people, but obviously be nice.
5. Calcs are incredibly helpful, but not necessary.
6. Give explanations. Not a thesis or anything, but more than one sentence should be fine.
7. If someone posts a pokemon with a certain set, you can only submit the same pokemon if it has a directly different set.

Our first victim is none other than the top dog of the tier(or, fairy perhaps) Clefable!

clefable.gif

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Teleport
- Moonblast
- Wish
- Protect

Utilizing Wish and teleport to safely pass on recovery to its teammates while simultaneously keeping off dangerous dragon-types with its incredible defensive typing, Clefable has sealed a top spot on everyone's threat list. How will you fight this fairy?

Submissions are due by Saturday, June 13th!

:ss/corviknight:
Taunt + Bulk Up Corviknight
Corviknight @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Brave Bird / Iron Head
- Bulk Up
- Roost
- Taunt

Taunt + BU Corviknight is one of the few and best counters to Clefable, being able to tank its Moonblast and prevent it's Teleport + Wish combination with Taunt. Corviknight also outspeeds Clefable with a base 67 Speed stat and is able to nearly OHKO Clefable with a +1 Iron Head and 2HKO it with a +1 Brave Bird, forcing Clefable out without the use of Teleport to constantly heal it's teammates and gain momentum.

+1 0 Atk Corviknight Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Clefable: 296-350 (75.1 - 88.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Corviknight: 39-47 (9.7 - 11.7%) -- possibly the worst move ever
+1 0 Atk Corviknight Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Clefable: 222-262 (56.3 - 66.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Salazzle @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Corrosion
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Toxic
- Sludge Wave
- Flamethrower
- Nasty Plot

Thanks to its Poison/Fire-typing Salazzle is 4x resistant to Fairy and can come in on WishPort Clefable for days (given it hasn't lost its Heavy-Duty Boots). On the offensive side it has options for whatever Clefable can do:
  • Clefable hard switches fearing Sludge Wave? Toxic
  • Clefable uses Teleport expecting Toxic? Sludge Wave
  • Clefable uses Protect (to heal itself up after using Wish)? Nasty Plot
Because Salazzle has the ability to exploit WishPort Clefable like this, I nominate it as a counter to this set.
0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Salazzle: 36-43 (12.9 - 15.5%) -- possible 7HKO
252 SpA Salazzle Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Clefable: 216-254 (54.8 - 64.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252 SpA Salazzle Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Clefable: 428-506 (108.6 - 128.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Nomming as a counter bc of the Smog definition but I really don’t like those definitions bc they’re p outdated and misleading imo.

:bw/excadrill:
Excadrill @ Leftovers
Ability: Mold Breaker / Sand Rush
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly / Adamant Nature
- Iron Head
- Earthquake / High Horsepower
- Rapid Spin
- Stealth Rock / Swords Dance

Excadrill takes fuck all from Clef, KOs back with Iron Head, and takes advantage of it to click Spin or SD unpunished.

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 8 Atk / 248 Def
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Slack Off
- Whirlwind

Hippowdon is a check to the standard wish+teleport clefable set. Hippo is not very capable of defeating clefable itself, but it is able to disrupt clefable's role as a healer. Hippo can comfortably switch into and out-heal clefable's moonblast, while phazing with whirlwind leaves the opponent with a mere 1/5 chance of healing the intended target (or better, if any of their mons have been KO'd). Hazard damage from Hippo's stealth rock, or spikes/tspikes from its allies make this even more dangerous for the opponent as time goes on. For teams reliant on clefable's wish support, hippo helps its teammates secure KOs by turning clefable's reliable healing into a guessing game.

:ss/aegislash-blade:

Aegislash @ Choice Band
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Iron Head
- Close Combat
- Shadow Sneak
- Shadow Claw

Due to it's typing, Aegislash switches easily into Clefable, as it takes little damage from Moonblast and OHKOs it with Iron Head. Clefable can't do anything back, disrupting its purpose of passing a Wish safely to teammates. Therefore I'm submitting it as a counter.

Cinderace @ Life Orb / Heavy-Duty Boots
Jolly Nature
Ability: Libero
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
- Zen Headbutt
- Pyro Ball
- U-turn
- Sucker Punch

While Cinderace can't take repeated hits from Clefable long-term, it still threatens Clefable with a clean 2HKO from Pyro Ball, regardless of its choice of item, and thanks to the newly-released Libero can predict around the Clefable user's forced switches and punish accordingly. Therefore, Cinderace serves as a decent offensive check to WishPort Clefable due to its ability to threaten it with an effortless 2HKO and gather momentum for one's team.

:ss/gengar:
Gengar @ Black Sludge
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 96 HP / 72 SpA / 88 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hex
- Will-O-Wisp
- Sludge Bomb
- Substitute

This Gengar set as a whole just takes the fullest advantage of this Clefable set making it a counter, Gengar can just set up a Substitute on Clef as it either tries to recover with Protect or is switching it out allowing Gengar to spread status with Will-O-Wisp or Sludge Bomb, eventually leading where Gengar can then spam Hex.

Snorlax @ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Curse
- Body Slam
- Rest
- Heat Crash
Snorlax hard walls Wish Pass Clefable and can also use it as setup fodder to potentially sweep. Snorlax can Rest if its health gets low from hazards and Moonblast chip damage.

Bisharp @ Black Glasses
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Knock Off
- Iron Head
- Sucker Punch

I‘m submitting Bisharp as a check. Although it hates getting worn down by Clefable’s Moonblast, Bisharp can use it to its advantage, because the 30% chance of a SpA drop from Moonblast just weakens an unimportant stat for Bisharp and helps it improve its nuclear Attack stat. Any offensive Bisharp set would outspeed the WishPort set and easily force Clefable out, allowing for Bisharp to set up Swords Dance and revenge kill Clefable’s potential teammates in Dragapult and non-Sash Excadrill.

EVs: 252 HP / 64 SpA / 44 SpD / 148 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Scald
- Moonblast
- Calm Mind

One of the more recent counters to pop up in the meta and a great balance breaker. Sets up on Clef, which can never break its sub and messes up teams. Can switch in all day, everyday. The only way Clef can beat this thing is to be unaware calm mind, which its common partner Salazzle can Toxic.

Jirachi_XY.gif

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 40 Atk / 216 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Substitute
- Toxic
- Fire Punch
- Iron Head

Nomming Jirachi as a counter, it can infinitely come in on Clefable and force awkward turns when trying to pass Wishes. The added ability to get up a Substitute on the switch and start annoying the opponents team makes it even better, as well as getting off a Toxic on common switch ins such as Hippowdon makes Jirachi a complete nuisance to deal with and disincentivises the Clefable user from playing passively.

reserving toxtricity

:ss/Toxtricity:
Toxtricity @ Choice Specs
Ability: Punk Rock
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Boomburst
- Overdrive
- Volt Switch

- Sludge Wave

:toxtricity: is a pretty good check to clefable as it resists clefables main stab in moonblast and manages to eat the hit up as it doesn't even get 3hkoed
whereas toxtricity with its sheer power can easily 2hko with sludge wave as well do decent damage with even an overdrive incase the opponent tries to predict a sludge wave
and try to switch into their corviknight and it's powerful boomburst can also do a lot of damage to clefable. overall toxtricity is a great offensive check to clefable.

calcs:
0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Toxtricity: 66-78 (22.6 - 26.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Choice Specs Punk Rock Toxtricity Boomburst vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Clefable: 209-247 (53 - 62.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Punk Rock Toxtricity Overdrive vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Clefable: 179-212 (45.4 - 53.8%) -- 2% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Toxtricity Volt Switch vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Clefable: 121-144 (30.7 - 36.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Toxtricity Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Clefable: 326-386 (82.7 - 97.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

I will disband the soccer club
is a Tiering Contributor Alumnus
It's not written in the rules that mons can't be submitted twice, and since the other person who submitted Aegislash did so with an Aegislash set that is not optimal against Wish Protect Clef, because the Clef is gonna be able to scout the move everytime after it revealed its item, so it then becomes pretty simple to switch into for most teams. Because of this I decided to submit my own.

Aegislash @ Scope Lens / Air Balloon
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Iron Head
- Shadow Claw
- Shadow Sneak
- Swords Dance

To explain why I've chosen this set I'm gonna explain how to neutralise Clef. So in order to beat Wish Tel Clef, you need something that can always switch on Moonblast and prevent it from using Teleport. But to annoy it even more, make that pokemon a strong setup sweeper, that way, everytime Clef is a bit low on HP, it'll click Wish and on that turn you switch on Aegislash and now Clef is stuck at low HP, and if it protects, Aegislash has a free SD, and then the opponent is in a terrible position because nothing switches on a +2 Aegislash with Shadow Claw. If Clef doesn't protect and switches out, it won't be able to switch on your Dragapult, Hydreigon or Kyurem anymore (you should always pair it with one of those mons.
This replay between Bloody and Pohjis shows it well, where Bloody has Excadrill instead of Aegi. I think Shadow Claw Aegi works better than Excadrill tho, because once at +2 there are no free switch-ins, whereas Corviknight can still switch on a +2 Excadrill if it is at full health.
So yeah, that's how you beat Clef, and most importantly that's how you beat teams built around Wish Tel Clef. Excadrill and Salazzle can fullfill this job as well, but Aegi is much scarier at +2.

Ferrothorn acts as a check to Clefable. Defensively, Ferrothorn only takes 12-14% uninvested, meaning it can almost always switch in unless it’s already dead. The recent Dracovish ban leaves room for SpD investment so potentially, Clef could do even less.

Offensively, Ferrothorn’s best option for checking Clefable is Iron Head. Iron Head is chosen over Gyro Ball because not only does Gyro Ball fail to 2HKO uninvested Clef, WishPort sets typically run even less speed then the above set suggests, lowering Gyro Ball’s damage output even more. Iron Head also has the additional properties of possibly flinching Clef if it attempts to Teleport in front of Ferro and preserving PP in the long run.

Typically, the play-out looks like this: Clef comes in, Clef uses Wish while Ferro switches in, Ferro Iron Heads on the Teleport doing over 50% with a chance to flinch Clef or leaving it below half health after Teleporting. When Clef next comes in and Wishes on the Ferro switch-in, it is forced to Protect or hard-switch. This allows Ferro to either hazard stack on the Protect, or Knock Off/Leech Seed the switch-in. It can also Knock Off Clef’s Leftovers denting it’s long-term recovery options if it tries to stay in on Ferro for a turn.

Ferro is only a check with Iron Head, as Power Whip is just shy of the 2HKO and fails to sufficiently interrupt Clef’s Wish passing without assistance or prior damage, Gyro Ball and Body Press do even less, Knock Off damage is negligible, and Leech Seed does not work on Clef. Clef also typically has allies who can take an Iron Head comfortably like Toxapex and Corviknight. That said, Iron Head Ferro’s true aim in checking Clef is to interrupt its Wish passing, and allow for its own allies to break through weakened foes reliant on Wish passing for long-term success.

Wall of Calcs because I don’t know how to hide things:

0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Ferrothorn: 43-51 (12.2 - 14.4%)

0 Atk Ferrothorn Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Clefable: 212-252 (53.8 - 63.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Clefable: 159-187 (40.3 - 47.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (57 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Clefable: 152-180 (38.5 - 45.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (41 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Clefable: 110-132 (27.9 - 33.5%) -- 89.4% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Def Ferrothorn Body Press vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Clefable: 62-73 (15.7 - 18.5%) -- possible 8HKO after Leftovers recovery

Rotom-Heat @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Overheat
- Discharge
- Toxic

I'm submitting Rotom-H as a counter. Rotom tanks Moonblast with ease and can freely setup Nasty Plot if Clef decides to Wish-Protect. The combination of boosted Overheat and Discharge nullifies Clef's ability to Teleport, since clicking Teleport risks taking massive damage or paralysis, either of which can effectively cripple it for the rest of the game. Even if the Clefable Wishes and then swaps out, its teammates also run the risk of boosted Overheat, paralysis, or Toxic, giving the Rotom-H player an advantage regardless of the opponent's decision.

Weezing-Galar @ Black Sludge
Ability: Neutralizing Gas
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
- Strange Steam
- Sludge Bomb / Flamethrower / Whatever
- Toxic / Toxic Spikes
- Taunt / Pain Split / Whatever

Rising star NGas Toxic/TSpikes Weezing-G is a hard counter to Clefable, and not just WishPort Clefable - all Clefables. Seriously, this thing has about 1389753 viable moves, and while I've slashed Sludge Bomb and Taunt first for dedicated WishPort-killing duties, it can be customised to beat any set you want (Clear Smog or Haze for CM, Defog for SR, Aromatherapy for TWave, etc). Speed creep is also customisable, but 4 Spe is enough for Clef.

Clef has no Counters imo since it just pivots out with Teleport as you send in whatever your answer to it is.
Darmanitan as a Check.

Darmanitan @ Choice Scarf / Choice Band
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flare Blitz
- U-turn
- Earthquake
- Trick

While its not the most splashable Pokemon, Darmanitan can come in and threaten to OHKO Clefable or any of its teammates with a Sun-boosted Flare Blitz (25% chance to OHKO if Sun isn't up). Note that Darmanitan only fits in Sun teams.

0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Darmanitan: 79-93 (22.5 - 26.4%) -- 24% chance to 4HKO
252 Atk Sheer Force Darmanitan Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Clefable: 348-409 (88.3 - 103.8%) -- 25% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Sheer Force Darmanitan Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Clefable: 519-612 (131.7 - 155.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
