Congratulations to our four winners and thanks for all your submissions.

Ghost types are pretty scary in OU and this one is no exception, our new VOTW is Aegislash!

aegislash.gif

Aegislash @ Spell Tag
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Substitute
- Shadow Ball
- Flash Cannon
- Close Combat

Even if it’s not OU by usage, Aegislash is a threat that shouldn’t be underestimated. Sporting very good offensive stats in its Sword form and solid defensive stats in its Shield form, Aegislash is a potent wallbreaker who still brings a nice defensive utility. Its Ghost typing makes it extremely threatening offensively while the Steel typing helps it checking threats like Tapu Lele. Shadow Ball is its main STAB and one of the most spammable moves in OU, while Flash Cannon is a secondary STAB to hit Ghost resists. Close Combat is there mainly to nail special walls like Blissey and Tyranitar. Lastly, Substitute allows to ease the need of prediction and can easily be used on a forced switch. Spell Tag is a decent item option to boost its main offensive move, even though Leftovers could have been considered for more longevity. How would you check and counter the mighty Sword and Shield Pokemon? Let’s find out!

Submission phase will end on next Friday, good luck!

Dragapult @ Choice Specs
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Draco Meteor
- U-turn
- Flamethrower

Can't switch into Shadow Ball, Dragapult switches into every other attack, Infiltrator lets it ignore Sub and OHKO it.

Gastrodon @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain / Sticky Hold (doesn't matter for this)
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Recover

Switching into Aegislash is hard with its power and perfect coverage, but Gastrodon has the sheer bulk to avoid the 2HKO from everything and easily OHKOes Sword forme and 2HKOes Shield forme with Earthquake, making it one of the best counters.

252+ SpA Spell Tag Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 150-177 (35.2 - 41.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

0 Atk Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Aegislash-Blade: 318-374 (121.8 - 143.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 Atk Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Aegislash-Shield: 138-164 (52.8 - 62.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

(Although we don't have Choice Specs on the set, you nearly always avoid the 2HKO from that as well.)

av tornadus-t
:ss/tornadus-therian:
Tornadus-Therian (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 208 HP / 20 SpA / 112 SpD / 168 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Heat Wave
- Knock Off

- U-turn
:tornadus-therian: COUNTER

av torn-t is a fat prick that works as a pseudo-dark type that tries to keep ghost spam in check with its icreased special bulk and access to a crippling knock off against pult, blacephalon and of course aegislash.
the sword and shield pokèmon itself is actually the one that gets violated the most by av torn-t compared to the other two, because it's slower than tornadus-t, weaker than specs blacephalon and also weak to heat wave. the weakness to heat wave is actually huge because with those 20 spatk evs, tornadus-t gets a clean ohko on the given aegislash spread, while knock off is a comfortable ko if aegislash has already used a substitute.
this offensive capabilities go hand in hand with its defensive calcs, as torn-t is barely 3hkod by spell tag shadowball and just about never 3hkod by flash cannon and make sure that tornadus-t comofrtably deals with this version of aegislash with no difficulties, even with rocks up.

these 3 scenarios takes into account that torn-t switches on stealth rock.
scenario 1: aegislash clicks close combat. deals no damage, gets forced out because even knock off kills at that point, and regenerator will heal most of the damage anyway.
scenario 2: aegislash clicks flash cannon/shadow ball. tornadus-t will ohko aegislash with heat wave but has a chance of dying to a subsequent shadowball if heat wave's 95% accuracy is pissed at you.
scenario 3: aegislash clicks sub. torn-t can break sub with knock off, eat every hit even on a crit and then ko with knock off or heat wave.

tl;dr even with stealth rock up and some bad luck, tornadus-t can aegislash without fail and that's why i think it's a counter. without rocks tornt doesnt even break a sweat as regen will heal almost all of the damage dealt from aegislash's strongest move, shadowball.
if torn-t starts against shield aegislash, it can knock off the spell tag away and proceed to endlessly wall it.

:aegislash: vs :tornadus-therian:
252+ SpA Spell Tag Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 208 HP / 112 SpD Assault Vest Tornadus-Therian: 118-139 (33.6 - 39.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO // 23.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Flash Cannon vs. 208 HP / 112 SpD Assault Vest Tornadus-Therian: 99-117 (28.2 - 33.3%) -- 0% chance to 3HKO // guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
0- Atk Aegislash-Blade Close Combat vs. 208 HP / 0 Def Tornadus-Therian: 62-74 (17.6 - 21%) -- possible 5HKO

Volcarona

:volcarona:
Volcarona @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 248 HP / 156 Def / 16 SpA / 88 Spe
Timid Nature
- Quiver Dance
- Roost
- Flamethrower
- Psychic / Safeguard
Bulky Volcarona is a Check to Specially-Based Aegislash. Its Bug/Fire typing allows it to survive multiple hits from Flash Cannon and Close Combat and supereffectively hit Aegislash back. Flame Body can burn Aegislash if it uses Close Combat and also gives Volcarona an advantage against other physical attackers. 248 HP and 156 Defense EVs are set to help Volcarona take advantage of Flame Body better and last longer against physical attackers, 16 Special Attack EVs are used to give it a slight power boost so it doesn’t miss out on KOs, and 88 Speed EVs help beat out most defensive mons and outspeed offensive threats after one Quiver Dance. A Timid nature is preferred to allow Volc to outspeed these mentioned threats. Quiver Dance is mandatory for not only boosting SpA and Speed to make Volcarona more dangerous, but also boosts Special Defense to take hits better from Shadow Ball. Roost is also mandatory to help the solar moth setup easier against Aegislash and keep it healthy throughout the game. Flamethrower serves as reliable STAB that KOs Aegislash in Blade form and has a small chance to burn it. Psychic serves as an extra move for coverage, but Safeguard allows Volcarona to keep Toxic users from stalling it out or Paralysis users from crippling its speed.

0- Atk Aegislash-Blade Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 156 Def Volcarona: 59-70 (15.8 - 18.7%) -- possible 6HKO

252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Flash Cannon vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 72-86 (19.3 - 23%) -- possible 5HKO

252+ SpA Spell Tag Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 175-207 (46.9 - 55.4%) -- 73.4% chance to 2HKO

252+ SpA Spell Tag Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. +1 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 117-138 (31.3 - 36.9%) -- 75.2% chance to 3HKO

252+ SpA Spell Tag Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. +2 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 88-105 (23.5 - 28.1%) -- 88.9% chance to 4HKO

252+ SpA Spell Tag Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. +3 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 70-84 (18.7 - 22.5%) -- possible 5HKO

16 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Aegislash-Shield: 192-228 (73.5 - 87.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

16 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Aegislash-Blade: 440-522 (168.5 - 200%) -- guaranteed OHKO

These qualities make Volcarona an excellent Check to the Sword and Shield Pokémon.

Moltres-Galar @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Berserk
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Agility
- Fiery Wrath
- Hurricane

Moltres-Galar is a check. Its bulk allows it to switch in on any two of Aegislash's attacks from full, break its Substitute if necessary, then threaten a KO with Fiery Wrath. If you think the Aegislash is going to switch out, you can use that as an opportunity to get a free boost.

:moltres-galar:
252+ SpA Moltres-Galar Fiery Wrath vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Aegislash-Shield: 204-240 (78.1 - 91.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 92 Def / 152 SpD / 16 Spe
Impish Nature
- Foul Play
- Roost
- Defog
- U-turn

Mademoiselle Buzz is a counter. She can switch into both STABs and Roost off the damage. Furthermore, she can retaliate with Foul Play.

252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Flash Cannon vs. 248 HP / 152 SpD Mandibuzz: 135-160 (31.9 - 37.8%) -- 94.5% chance to 3HKO

252+ SpA Spell Tag Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 248 HP / 152 SpD Mandibuzz: 81-96 (19.1 - 22.6%) -- possible 5HKO

Reserving SpD Lando (check)

Landorus
:ss/landorus-therian:
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers :leftovers:
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Toxic / Knock Off
- Stealth Rock

Landorus is an age-old check for Aegislash. Univested Earthquake from Landorus is always baleful, while Knock Off is to be watched out for. Landorus must be cautious of switching into Shadow Ball and Flash Cannon consistently as it has no reliable recovery, gradually being crippled and removed. However, thanks to the pressure it creates, Landorus is granted many opportunities to work around Aegislash. It is congruent to many teams-- therefore, it is the most consistent at checking Aegislash.

It is important to confirm the coverage of Aegislash as Steel Beam hits Landorus quite hard, reducing its longevity.

Garchomp @ Leftovers
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Swords Dance
- Scale Shot
- Fire Fang
Garchomp will forever be my favorite check to Aegislash. With this aggressive set, you can easily boost your atk and claim a OHKO with earthquake on Aegislash. Besides trying to set up, you can also claim guaranteed OHKO with earthquake after rocks.
Here are some calcs to show you the true power of this beast:

252 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Aegislash-Shield: 246-290 (94.2 - 111.1%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Aegislash-Shield: 246-290 (94.2 - 111.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

And
252+ SpA Spell Tag Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Garchomp: 208-246 (58.2 - 68.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Flash Cannon vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Garchomp: 174-205 (48.7 - 57.4%) -- 50% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Congratulations to our four winners and thanks for all your submissions.

For next week, let’s feature a scary setup sweeper and Pressure staller who make an appearance in a SPL game: Suicune.

suicune.gif

Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Substitute
- Protect
- Scald

Suicune is not the most common Pokemon in OU, but it still sees some usage due to its ability to stray up sweep some teams that have no way to prevent him from setting up and pp stalling its answers. Protect and Substitute allow Suicune to PP stall a wide variety of Pokemon in the tier and to avoid status conditions. With 252 HP EVs, it reaches 404 HP meaning that Blissey’s Seismic Toss cannot break its Substitute. Calm Mind is used as Suicune setup move and is the main reason why this Pokemon can become that much of a threat. Lastly, Scald is the best offensive move for a single offensive move set and can even be used after setting up a Substitute to fish for a burn on a physical breaker coming in. The Speed is maximized to have fast Substitute and be able to outspeed and finish off some scary wallbreakers, even though you can shift some Speed EVs into Def to improve its physical bulk. Who would you use to check or counter this scary setup sweeper? Let’s find out!

Submission phase will end on next Friday, good luck!
