Description by Vrin: This is a fairly standard balance build that exploits what is IMO the tier's best defensive core (Ting Lu + Garganacl + Amoonguss), stacks hazards for abuse with Gholdengo, and wins with the combination of NP Chi-Yu (switch it in aggressively! it's good to catch Choiced Gholdengo Tricks), Hex Dragapult, and a whole lot of indirect damage (Burns, Salt Cure, hazards + Whirlwind, maybe even some Sludge Bomb Poisons). IMO there are two ways to build balance right now: you either go all-in on hazard control with Great Tusk + Hatterene-esque structures, or you just spam hazards yourself while throwing Boots on everything. This team goes with the latter approach, which means that "trading" hazards is basically always favourable to you and lets you rack up tons of chip. If you find yourself struggling vs opposing hazard stack teams, try to play your Chi-Yu more aggressively — it preforms really well in those matchups. If you want to improve the hazard stack matchup, consider dropping Protect on Garganacl for Body Press and giving it Heavy-Duty Boots.
Some misc. gameplay tips:
- A LOT of endgames are won by Tera Water Garganacl, so don't Tera too willy-nilly, even if there's a situation where Tera Fire Overheat would be strong.
- The team lacks speed control outside of Pult and Scarf Gholdengo, so be careful of fast threats like Booster Energy Valiant; Roost Dragonite is particularly problematic due to being able to 1v1 Garganacl, but it's still beatable if you pressure it enough and make smart doubles.
- While sturdy, the Ting Lu + Garganacl + Amoonguss backbone typically struggles with fast and strong wallbreakers like Specs Valiant or Chi-Yu or Band Chien-Pao. Abuse the two Pokemon with Protect to scout out these options and play around them (while getting some free Leftovers recovery and maybe burn/Salt Cure damage).
- Try not to play it too passively, Ting-Lu WILL get worn down so you want to put the game on a "timer" by getting Chi-Yu in as much as possible and by Burning/Salt Curing as many Pokes as possible.
- Watch out for Recover PP, both on your own and your opponent's Garganacls. Clear Smog + Grass Knot Amoonguss paired with Gholdengo should beat opposing Gargas long-term but you might have to switch around a lot and stall out Recover PP.
(also if Tera Psychic Amoonguss seems weird, it's a very specific tech to catch Psyshock Valiant + non-Steel Espathra. I never actually used it tho so whatever, Amoonguss shouldn't Tera often regardless)
This is a Sawsbuck build that aims to take advantage of Serene Grace and Paralysis support from Froslass and Iron Valiant. The latter aims to Thunder Wave pokemon such as Volcarona and Iron Moth, while also luring in Skeledirge and Gholdengo to knock them off. Quaquaval helps with rain, as well as Amoonguss and Toxapex. Iron Treads helps provide extra speed control and spin support. Choice Band Tera Dark Chien-Pao gives the team much needed immediate power. Be mindful to not always sack Froslass early on, as it can act as a spin blocker mid game.
Tera Water Choice Band Wave Crash Floatzel on rain is one of the scariest attacks in the tier, 2HKOing even resists. The few pokemon that are able to take more than one hit such as Toxapex, Dondozo, Amoonguss, Alomomola and Tera Water Garganacl get met with a Taunt Annihilape. AV Iron Treads provides Rapid Spin support mid game, while also helping the team pivot around threats such as Dragapult.
