Battle Tree Ref Guide

The Battle Tree

The Battle Tree is a PvE game mode that features Pokemon battles, critical-thinking puzzles, and light roleplay. It is suitable for players of all skill levels but requires Pokemon of Stage 3* or higher. Entry cost is 12 JC.

Challenge Details:
  • The challenge consists of three individual battles. Each battle will be fought against a randomly-generated team. Winning all three battles counts as beating the Tree challenge.
  • The challenge ends if the challenger loses a battle.
  • All ties are treated as a loss for the challenger.
  • Each battle is preceded by a Roleplay Segment. In the Roleplay Segment, the ref will present an obstacle to the Trainer. The Trainer must use their Pokemon's unique traits to overcome the obstacle, and by doing so the trainer earns TC.
Battle Rules:
  • 2v2 Singles
  • Switch = OK
  • Abilities: One
  • 48 hr DQ (72 hr for Ref)
  • 2 Recoveries / 5 Chills
  • 3 Substitutions
Battle Details:
  • The ref always sends out first.
  • Arena is default arena.
  • Illusion has no effect.
  • When challenging Tiers 1-2:
    • Items off
  • When challenging Tier 3:
    • Items on
    • Mega Evolution: 1 per Mon
    • Z-Moves: 1 per Mon
    • Ref equips on sendout from the following list of items:
      • Barometer (only on mons with applicable Abilities)
      • Expert Belt
      • Flame Orb (only on mons with Guts)
      • Leftovers
      • Life Orb (only on mons with Abilities that negate Life Orb recoil)
      • Muscle Band
      • RageCandyBar
      • Wise Glasses
    • If the Profile lists data for a Mega Form, the ref must equip a Mega Stone and must immediately Mega Evolve on sendout.
    • If the Profile lists data for a specific item-based or attachment-based form, the ref must equip the appropriate transformative item or attachment, even if it is not on the list of possible ref items.
Roleplay Rules:
  • Always show respect to other players!
  • Make sure to abide by Smogon's rules of conduct at all times.
  • The challenger’s team is comprised of:
    • The Trainer, which represents the player themselves.
    • The Trainer’s two Pokemon.
  • The challenger’s Pokemon cannot abandon their Trainer, and vice versa.
  • Pokemon can talk.
  • During Roleplay Segments, you are NOT allowed to harm, injure, or kill characters under any circumstances. (Threatening characters is okay.)

Roleplay Segment Details:

Each battle is preceded by a Roleplay Segment. Roleplay Segments are open-ended puzzles where the challenger and their Pokemon may act freely, ignoring the standard rules of BBP battle. Each Roleplay Segment begins with the ref describing some sort of obstacle or complication that the challenger must overcome.

The challenger must respond with a Solution. The challenger's Solution is their plan for overcoming the obstacle. In order to be valid, the challenger's Solution must make use of their Pokemon according to the following guidelines:
  • The Pokemon, not the Trainer, must be the main contributors to the Solution.
  • One or both of the challenger’s Pokemon must "participate"in the Solution. Pokemon "participate" in a solution by using one or more of the following things to help solve the problem:
    • A move it knows.
    • Its Ability.
    • Its Held Item.
    • Its Pokedex entry (from any of the official Pokemon games).
    • Its biology (from Bulbapedia).
    • Its Attitude. (Contributions made this way must be within human capabilities.)
    • Its Background. (Contributions made this way must be within human capabilities.)
  • At least one Pokemon must participate by using something that it has not used in a previous Roleplay Segment.
  • The solution must have a >0% chance of success.
  • During Roleplay Segments, Metronome is banned.
After the challenger posts their Solution, the ref makes one more post describing the outcome of the challenger's Solution. The ref can either: accept the solution, reject the solution, or request that the challenger remedy a flaw in their solution.

At the end of the Roleplay Segment, if the challenger's solution is valid, then the challenger is awarded 1 TC for each Pokemon that participated by using something it has not used in a previous Roleplay Segment.

Prizes:
  • After each Roleplay Segment, the challenger earns 1 TC for each of their Pokemon that participated by using something it has not used in a previous Roleplay Segment.
  • After each battle, the challenger earns 2 TC and 2 RC, regardless of the outcome.
  • Winning battles earns additional cumulative rewards:
Battle NumberVictory Reward
1
4 TC, 4 RC
2
Challenger's Pokemon may advance to Stage 4*.
3
Challenger's Pokemon may advance to Stage 5*.

A Pokemon may not simultaneously evolve and advance its Stage.
If a challenger earns the opportunity to advance their Pokemon's Stage, and they choose not to advance the Stage of one (1) of their challenging Pokemon, they gain an extra 4 RC. This bonus does not stack (e.g. there is no further bonus for declining Stage 4* and Stage 5* at once, and there is no further bonus for declining to advance both challenging Pokemon).

Sign-Up Procedures:
  • A player will post in this thread asking to participate in the Battle Tree challenge.
  • A ref will take your challenge if procedures are followed correctly.
  • Claim your rewards in the Prize Claiming Thread as if it were a battle. If your Pokemon are eligible to increase their Stages, it should be done in the same post you claim your counters in.
  • You may re-challenge the Battle Tree as soon as you like.
  • Players who are challenging Battle Tree for the first time take priority over returning challengers.
Carnival: An annual festival in which humans and Pokemon celebrate their bonds of partnership. Enjoy the food, music, parades, and performances -- and of course, be dragged into many Pokemon battles by overeager Trainers.

Deep Space: The year is 30XX. Mankind has recently developed spaceships that travel at FTL speeds, allowing exploration of the cosmos. However, when the spaceship you are aboard begins to malfunction, you discover just how unprepared humanity is for the perils that lie hidden within the darkness of space...

Feudal Scuffle: While wandering through the feudal Ransei region, you see a plume of smoke rising from a neighboring province. Could it be a natural disaster? A wild Pokemon attack? Or perhaps an invading warlord? Only one way to find out... Travel across the untamed wilderness and resolve the incident!

Grocery Trip: A routine trip to the grocery store 1 mile from your house, in order to purchase a single item. Should be pretty straightforward. What could possibly go wrong?

High-Rise Metropolis: One of the most populous cities in the region. Scenic skyscrapers, speedy subways, and delicious eateries make this a great tourist spot. But you're not here for leisure -- today, you're here to track down a wanted criminal, capture them, and claim the sizable bounty on their head.

Mystery Jungle: A dense rainforest with wet, marshy soil underfoot and several layers of tree foliage overhead. You came to explore after hearing rumors of an ancient temple filled with treasure.

University of Science: A huge and prestigious university dedicated to the advancement of science. You can find all manners of experiments here. The scientists are always busy at work, and all would appreciate a helping hand!

Village of the Boreal Forest: A remote village, nestled deep within a snowy forest. Some say that this village holds the secret to a strange and powerful Pokemon Battling technique. Perhaps there is somebody within the village who could teach you about the mysterious fighting style?

Battle Tree MK III is now officially open! Refs, please create a new challenge thread for MK III if the challenger does not have one.

If you were whitelisted as a ref for Battle Tree MK II, and you reffed a Battle Tree challenge within the last 12 months, then you are automatically whitelisted for Battle Tree MK III as well.

By virtue of being the only challenger still in line for Battle Tree MK II, Gemini Taurus is first in line for Battle Tree MK III, and I will ref that challenge. Gemini Taurus please apply within this thread and tag me in the application.

Happy battling!

Pokemon #2: Hazel the Banette:banette:
Pokemon Ability: Cursed Body
Pokemon Attitude: Hazel is a very sassy and mischievous pokemon. She likes to play practical jokes at the expense of others, and very often can go a bit too far.

"Hmm, I hear the new Battle Tree lets you treasure hunt in a forest! I want to see what that's all about, for sure. Dotted! Virion! Ready to get going?"
"You're bringing me? For real? I'm so prepared for this, I won't let you down!"
"I'm not sure what we'd need you for. The last time you saw a flower, you used Rain Dance just so you could run away from it quicker. Leave this one to me."
"Well, here's hoping these two don't tear each other apart along the way. Oh dear."

Scenario: Mystery Jungle

Pokemon #1: Dotted the Drednaw
Pokemon Ability: Strong Jaw
Pokemon Attitude: Fascinated by new experiences, but rusty at battling.
Pokemon Background: After brutally injuring herself one too many times by tripping over a blade of grass, Dotted was mostly retired from battling. She has spent much of her time recently reading anything she could get her jaw on, especially nonfiction, and knows lots about biology, ecosystems, navigation, and much more!

Pokemon #2: Virion the Venusaur
Pokemon Ability: Chlorophyll
Pokemon Attitude: Extremely self-sufficient, but has difficulty understanding when teamwork is useful.
Pokemon Background: Virion puts the gatherer in "hunter-gatherer". Growing up she was the best among her siblings at finding the tastiest berries and sturdiest branches, and she's only gotten better with practice. And she's used to spending time in forests too!

Pokemon #1: Kaya the Heracross
Pokemon Ability: Guts
Pokemon Item: Flame Orb
Pokemon Attitude: Kaya really enjoys fighting, and is always looking for a new challenge.
Pokemon Background: Kaya grew up sparring with her siblings, and is convinced that a friendly fight is the best way to make new friends. Her desire for interesting battles led her to practice tracking down pokemon that she thought would give her a good fight.

Pokemon #2: Abigail the Tyranitar
Pokemon Ability: Sand Stream
Pokemon Item: Weakness Policy
Pokemon Attitude: Abigail likes being alone and doing things on her own, or with one or two others she knows well. Despite her appearance, she tends to be shy talking to people and pokemon she doesn't know.
Pokemon Background: While Abigail enjoys the occasional battle, she's not as interested in them as many pokemon are. Growing up, she was much more interested in painting, writing, and music, and now she spends most of her free time either writing or sculpting things.

Pokémon #1: Shizune Hakamichi the Milotic
Pokémon Ability: Competitive
Pokémon Attitude: Calculating and driven to aways strive for the best outcome, no matter how hard she has to work for it. Easily flustered, and prone to bouts of anger when encountering a particularly pesky roadblock.
Pokémon Background: Was shunned as a mute in her natural environment (being a Feebas didn't help), and joined the team when offered the opportunity to grow stronger. As a result, she's still slow to trust.
Pokémon Info:

This one had a bit of trouble adjusting to her new environment. Lots of new people meant she had to keep her guard up for a while, leading back to the problems she had when she first joined the team. Fortunately, this time, she has the old guard to support her, at least for those who enjoy her company.
The transition to Galar left her in pretty much the same state in terms of power, much to her chagrin. She got a few new tools to play with, so in the end she's just waiting for the opportunity to show off. And she loves to show off!

Pokémon Attitude: 50% sweet and plucky, 50% absolutely terrifying sadist. She lives for the thrill of battle and loves nothing more than to crush people under her legs.
Pokémon Background: Was once lording over a small jungle portion, and never really ditched the queenly attitude. She was always obeyed, whether it was out of respect or fear, and she is still very much capable of inspiring both in other people...
Pokémon Info:

Iris Heart is back with a vengeance! The transition to Galar somehow raised her power levels, and she now got a mean kick to spare for every occasion. More than one, actually.
She's still kind of difficult to deal with, as she has personality swings like no other. She could be all sugar one moment and just... take off the next, thirsty for blood. She still haven't met an opponent who would match her blow for blow, and especially someone who wouldn't get crushed underneath her feet. She's eagerly awaiting that day, too.

Update:
  • Added a new Scenario, Deep Space. (Sci-Fi, minor Horror themes)
  • Added four new Generic Events: Hungry, Slippery Floor, Stampede, and Locked.
  • Changed T2 Ref Pokemon Pangoro's Ability from Iron Fist to Scrappy.
  • Increased the number of tags on some of the existing Generic Events.
These changes do not affect in-progress challenges.

I commend the choice to add more roleplay or "anime-style" elements to our game, but this facility is so different from its on-cartridge equivalent that I wonder whether it should be renamed.

STAB; immunity to Poison/Toxic status. Absorb Toxic Spikes on switch-in unless Flying-typed or using the ability Levitate. -- Accuracy when using Toxic, Poison Gas, or Poison Powder, hitting even during Dig, Fly, etc. Ignore Fog's accuracy reduction.

Abilities:

Cursed Body

Cursed Body: When this Pokemon is struck by an opponent's attack, there is a 30% chance to inflict the attacker with the Disabled status. While Disabled, the attacker cannot use the move that struck this Pokemon.

"Technology has gotten so good these days, I never thought I'd be a space traveller!"
Challenge Thread: Thred
Tier: 2
Scenario: Deep Space

Pokemon #1: Guava the Gyarados:gyarados:
Pokemon Ability: Intimidate
Pokemon Attitude: Despite his overwhelming stature, Guava is quite reserved. He is quite content to sit back and watch a conversation, waiting for the right thing to say before jumping in and participating. Until he's comfortable with you that is, then he'll chat your ear off for hours and hours.
Pokemon Background: Guava had been alone for a very long time before he met Gemini. His isolation in the water led him to become a great observer of character, both Pokemon and human. He is great at reading intention, from his years of watching as people pass by.

Pokemon #2: Saffron the Fidgit:fidgit:
Pokemon Ability: Persistent
Pokemon Attitude: Saffron is super charismatic and easy to get along with. He makes friends everywhere he goes, but also isn't afraid to call someone out if they deserve it.
Pokemon Background: Saffron has quite the reputation as a handyman and can always be counted on when a problem needs to be solved. Being able to hold multiple tools and move things quickly and efficiently means that he is always eager to get things done, and can become quite impatient when things are moving slowly or not going according to plan.
