Battle Tree Ref Guide
The Battle Tree
The Battle Tree is a PvE game mode that features Pokemon battles, critical-thinking puzzles, and light roleplay. It is suitable for players of all skill levels but requires Pokemon of Stage 3* or higher. Entry cost is 10 JC.
Challenge Details:
Winning battles earns cumulative rewards:
Losing battles does not provide any rewards.
A Pokemon may not simultaneously evolve and advance its Stage.
Roleplay Rules:
Throughout the challenge, the challenger and the ref will improvise a story. This story will be told across several Roleplay Segments (one RP Segment precedes each battle). RP Segments have no effect on battles, but participating will unlock special rewards for the challenger.
Each Roleplay Segment begins with the ref describing some sort of obstacle or complication that the challenger must overcome. The challenger's job is to use their Pokemon to Respond to the obstacle. The rules are as follows:
At the end of the Roleplay Segment, if the challenger's Responses are valid, then the challenger is awarded 1 RP Token (RPT) for each Pokemon that contributed with something new. (Max. 2 RPT per RP Segment, 6 RPT per challenge).
Roleplay Tokens:
Roleplay Tokens (RPT), which are earned by participating in Roleplay Segments, can be spent to buy Titles.
RPT only exist within Battle Tree. They cannot be stockpiled. Any RPT you earn must be spent here in your next signup post. If you sign up without also spending the RPT you earned from your previous challenge, that RPT is forfeit.
Grandfather Clause: If the challenger's previous challenge started before the Tree update (it awarded TC instead of RPT), then that challenger may claim RPT equal to the TC they earned from RP Segments.
Titles:
Titles are prizes that can be purchased with RPT. They can be equipped to Pokemon to grant them additional Helpful and Detrimental Traits. Some Titles even alter the rules of RP Segments entirely!
Once you buy a Title, you own it forever and you can use it as many times as you want. Keep track of your owned Titles by listing them in your Trainer Profile.
Each Pokemon may equip a maximum of one (1) Title. If you want to equip the same Title to both of your Pokemon, you must buy it twice.
In addition, only one (1) Pokemon per challenge may equip a Title that comes with a Rule Alteration.
You may only buy Titles associated with the Scenario that you are signing up to challenge. For example, if you earned 4 RPT in your previous challenge and you are now signing up to challenge Mystery Jungle, you must spend the 4 RPT on Mystery Jungle Titles.
You may buy a Title and equip it in the same signup post, if you wish.
Sign-Up Procedures:
If you wish to become a Tree ref, please talk to me on Discord or send me a conversation here on Smogon. At minimum, you must have some experience battling and reffing, and you must be comfortable with applying the Damage Formula. Applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
