The Late Night Tournament
Welcome back, friends! It's time for another season of the Late Night Tournament!
For anyone out of the loop, the Late Night Tournament started out as a series of nightly mini-tournament hosted by myself and Caelum on the Smogon University Shoddybattle server. Each night, there was a special set of rules, or a 'theme', that all players had to abide by. A list of the previous themes can be found at the old LNT site. After a few weeks of running the tournaments at around 2am PST every night, we gave in to our inevitable sleep deprivation and social reclusiveness and put the project on pause until 'after ST5' (i.e. indefinitely). Sometime after ST5 I decided that it would be cool to start up the tournaments again with more organization, and with help from Earthworm and Matty I did just that. So here we are: It's time for the second season of the Late Night Tournament!
We all had a lot of fun last time, and the experience we have gained from running a tri-weekly tournament will not be put to waste. There will be several changes implemented from last season:

Sometime after ST5 I decided that it would be cool to start up the tournaments again with more organization, and with help from Earthworm and Matty I did just that. So here we are: It's time for the second season of the Late Night Tournament!
We all had a lot of fun last time, and the experience we have gained from running a tri-weekly tournament will not be put to waste. There will be several changes implemented from last season:
- Time: There were many, many complaints that 9:30 was too late. As much as I think it goes against the spirit of the tournament, the start time for all tournaments this season will be 8:00pm PST. If you do not understand time zones, I suggest you read up on the subject.
- More Hosts: I and Matty like to have social lives sometimes. We also have homework and work. And sometimes we just don't wanna do it. We need volunteers to help host the event. If you have the desire and ability to help, please contact me or Matty on irc or on the forums. Don't worry about experience; we can go over hosting protocol with you, but if you are not a Shoddy mod you need not apply.
- Set run time: Last time I had no real plans regarding when we would end the weekly tournaments, so it just continued on until I accidentally permanently deleted the entire LNT thread (I'm totally serious; and yes that is extremely embarassing). This season will be made up of 19 tournaments, which means it will last for approximately six weeks.
- Points System: I'm not totally sure what the plan is here; i know Matty has some kind of points system update in store which will probably encompass giving points to more people than just the top 4 finishers in each tournament.
- Each tournament will consist of standard matches with a "theme", which provides a change in the rules of the game. Some of these changes will be minor, but most will have a large effect on gameplay.
- Tournaments will be held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at these times:
- Monday: 8:00pm PST
- Wednesday: 8:00pm PST
- Friday: 8:00pm PST
- As you can see, these times are all the same. Each theme will feature a different picture of myself.
- The themes are decided by myself (RB Golbat). If you have a theme suggestion, feel free to post it here or tell me on IRC/Shoddy.
- There will be small prizes available to the top finishers in the LNT finals. The grand prize is a custom title (oooo aaaaaah). The third place prize will probably be kicking Hector from Shoddy Battle. The second place prize has not yet been decided but it will probably have something to do with kicking Hector.
- It's a lot of fun!
- Signups will be taken in this thread.
- Signups will begin 25-30 minutes before the tournament starts.
- The day's theme will likely be posted well ahead of time (at least a day in advance, usually two). It is likely that many of the old LNT's themes will be used again at some point.
- Most tournaments will cap at 32 players. Some may go up to 64 if enough players sign up.
- Signups are taken on a first come, first served basis. However, it is likely that we will need substitutes. Feel free to sign up as a substitute.
- If you need to drop out for whatever reason, that's fine. Just be sure to actually tell the host you want to make me very angry. And this should be obvious, but do not sign up if you cannot play.
- Be ready to play at the start of the tournament. If you do not have a team ready to go at the start, you will be subbed out. This is a live tournament, and it will not be delayed on account of a single person. This applies to substitutes as well - have a team ready to go.
- Matches will be posted on the last page and in the second post of this thread. Start your match as soon as you can find your opponent.
- Upon the completion of your match, post the results in this thread. It is recommended that you save logs in order to avoid disputes.
- Do not scout your opponents. You can watch any match you like, but if a player asks you to leave then you must do so. Failure to comply with this rule will get you banned from future Late Night Tournaments.
- Be sure to post the results of your match in this thread as soon as it finishes. Post even if I or another host was watching your match. Post even if you PM me on Shoddybattle or irc.
- Standard Smogon battling rules apply (sleep, freeze, species, soul dew, self ko, OHKO, and evasion clauses on, timer on) unless otherwise noted by that night's theme.
- Have good sportsmanship. Things like spamming, scouting, and being obnoxious will earn you an automatic forfeit.
- Even if you are playing in the Late Night Tournament, you must follow the rules of Shoddy Battle. If you are banned during the tournament or kicked during a match, you will lose.
Friday's (and the Final) theme is
"A new foe has appeared!"
This will be a standard OU tournament with the following exception:
- Colossoil is allowed.
- If you have any questions about the tournament format or the upcoming theme (or just comments about the new season!), feel free to post them in this thread.
