National Dex The return of choice banded Tyranitar Semi Sand + Special Salamence + Mega Sceptile. Peak - 1755. #78 on the ladder

Good morning, good afternoon or good evening guys. I am back again with another spicy team and this team would seem more interesting than it looks. We have a semi-sand team with the star choice banded Tyranitar, Steelium Z Swords Dance Excadrill, Choice Specs Salamence, Mega Sceptile with 4 attacks (All out attacking), Scarf Iron Crown and Assault Vest Azumarill.

Lets get right into the explanation of the team and the history behind it.

Tyranitar - I wanted to use choice banded Tyranitar in national dex and I felt its quite a strong breaker with Great Tusk and Dondozo being its only bad matchup in my opinion. But it stacks into the meta pretty well and sets up sand. I have gone with Stone Edge, Pursuit, Earthquake and Ice Punch. Stone Edge is stab and hits like a truck neutrally and 2hkoes most of the tier if its a neutral barring Dondozo. Pursuit is there to trap ghosts from switching out or frail attackers volt switching or u-turning out. Dragapult often got pursuited when it was here but now it got bannded so the big pursuit target is Slowking-Galar. Ice Punch is there to smack Gliscor and Landorus-T (more on the switch). It also hits dragons hard without resorting to stone edge. The last is Earthquake to ohko Heatran, Tapu Koko and hit Toxapex very hard. I think spdef Pex could be ohkoed with Earthquake + sand damage. Stone Edge nukes the birds like Moltres, Zapdos and has a decent chance to 2hko Corvknight and Skarmory. I once pursuit trapped a clodsire for big damage which helped me win vs stall and other situations. I went for Adamant to hit as hard as possible and max speed to outspeed base 60s like Primarina and Magnezone. Sandstream being a rock type provides it good defensive utility too.

Excadrill - This is my sweeper under sand or when sand is active and serving as a speed control against terrain offence too. It has the standard swords dance + rapid spin + dual stabs Iron Head and earthquake. Rapid Spin has helped vs hazards as I dont have any proper hazard control my team. We have steelium Z to hit a significant number of stuff hard and it does a lot after an SD at +2. Earthquake is strong stab and does significant damage. I went for Jolly as Roaring Moon is now in the tier and so that I can outspeed it at +1 when sand is active. Excadrill has a good defensive typing and is the electric immunity before Sceptile mega evolves. Its frail despite its high HP but it does offer good defensive utility and a good fairy resist. I could have not gone for it either but since the ladder loved using speed boosting offence I had to outplay it and run excadrill to serve as speed control in sand.

Salamence - My favourite psuedo and I love the mon a lot. I went for Salamence and I went for a special set. Special Salamence suited this team better because it can use intimidate better. The 4 moves are Draco Meteor, Fire Blast, Hydro Pump and Air Slash. I went for Fire Blast and Special Salamence so that it can smack Corvknight hard and ohko Ferrothron on the spot. Fire Blast does 90-107 with specs. Also, with intimidate and special Fire Blast is something Corvknight and Ferrothron will never see it coming. Also Hydro Pump smacks Lando thinking they can get up rocks on Mence. Also, with intim now you beat scarf Lando 1 vs 1. Hydro Pump also does massive damage to Gliscor with specs and can ohko pdef Moltres too. Fire Blast also smacks Mega Scizor and Gholdengo too. For Flying Stab I went for Air Slash as I felt it was more consistent. I went for Hurricane once or twice but Hurricane is so prone to missing so I felt Air Slash gets the job more of often. Salamence offers defensive utility via intimidate making it soft check Ogerpon-wellspring lacking play rough and checks grasses like Rillaboom and other fighting types slower than base 100 speed decently. Dragonite did not make any sense on this team since sand would chip it removing multiscale and plus we are using special moves on Salamence. I even thought of Noivern because of his higher speed. Noivern would lack intimidate and since Noivern has less bulk as in 10 less HP than Salamence and 13 lower special attack, felt Salamence was overall more useful. With intim salamence could help us out against Hawlucha.

Mega Sceptile - He is taken for my mega slot for both personal reasons and also for a big role on the team. He provides sufficient speed control at base 145 speed and has a good special attack at 145. Standard 4 attacks - Leaf Storm, Dragon Pulse, Giga Drain and Focus Blast. Leaf Strom hits hard neutrally such as ohkoing Tapu Koko. Dragon Pulse is dragon stab. It koed Dragapult from full and Mega Sceptile outspeed it naturally. Dragapault is banned now but still Dragon Pulse is neutral stab hitting the Dragons super effectively and koing Garchomp most of time doing a minimum of 96 and max of 114. I need chip on Roaring Moon, Mega Latios and Raging Bolt first then Dragon Pulse would kill them after some chip or 2 rounds of sand chip. Focus Blast 2hkoes Ferrothorn and Heatran and ohkoes Mega Lopunny and the big one Kingambit. Yes its inaccurate but as long as Kingambit is in the tier (to hell with this mon Kingambit) I would have to run focus blast. Hidden Power Fire and Earthquake were other consideration but i will take with this set. Also with this set I was able to beat Mega Sableye in a game once and put him in a position where he was forced to recover and protect but i was gaining all the hp back with giga drain. Also leaf strom nukes Alamamola and Slowbro. Giga Drain gets the ohko on mega diancie and greninja too. Mega Sceptile serves a special attacker + pseduo speed control and also outspeed zamazenta and mega lopunny too which is a big plus. It also is the fastest blocker of volt switch available in the game and the fastest special attacker, that has more than 100 spa. So it still offers good defensive utility in spite of its frailty. Standard timid max spa and max speed.

Iron Crown - I went for scarf Crown because I felt scarf Crown has a good match up vs HO and offensive threats. Volt Switch is for momentum, Psychic Noise is stab and to prevent healing and hits through subs. Tachyon Cutter is the big one. It denies so many hazard setters with a scarf like Glimmora, Ribombee etc. Its also stab that breaks sashes and hits twice and subs. Focus Blast is stab as it doesnt have any other way to hit steel types or dark types. Its inaccurate sadly but we have no other choice. Iron Crown comes with good defensive typing and utlility. It helps me check Lele and serves a grass resist too and has great bulk on the special side and good bulk on the physical side too. Standard timid max spa and max speed. Now I used to Heatran in the past over this which was baloon Magma taunt but with stealth rock but it kept missing magma and all it did was trap Toxapex once so it didnt contribute anything significant. I also tried stealth rocks tinkaton but it was slowing down progress and it made a lot of stuff set up fodder.

Azumarill - The last spot on the team is for Azumarill. I have gone for Assault Vest as it can check special attackers like Volcarona and soft check Gholdengo or prevent me to being swept by Gholdengo. It has Knock off, Liquidation, Aqua Jet and Play Rough. Play Rough and Liquidation are stabs that quite a bit due to huge power. Knock is for utility and remove items. Aqua Jet is for priortiy. The EV spread is outspeed defensive mega scizor and the rest in HP to give it a bit of bulk. Its bulk is decent overall with a good typing. I used to run sd booster valiant on this earlier but then I realised Iron Valiant can only come in once on a fighting type and we needed more consistency here and felt Azumarill could provide. Primarina was another side consideration but Azumarill had more physical bulk which is what we needed. Azumarill is also to ensure that Kommo-o doesnt go ham ad without fairies Kommo-o becomes a problem. The other reason for picking Azumarill is that we needed an ice resist to deal with Weavile (fairy who resists ice). Weavile isn't common but still. This is also the teams check to Volcarona too.

Threats

Offensive

Garchomp - We have done well against Garchomp most of the time. But if we get counter lead then this can a big problem. Sometimes I just attack Chomp and keep the pressure on.

Galar Zapdos - We barely have any safe switch ins to this mon. Its not common but its not easy to deal with and we might have to trade vs it.

Roaring Moon - I think the set can be defined by what item it runs but I need Salamence and Azumarill both alive to help vs it otherwise I would be toast.

Mega Tyranitar - We do not really have switch in to Mega Tyranirar on this team. I would have to attack the Mega Tyranitar if I am crown and not switch out vs it.

Defensive

Alomomola - Only Mega Sceptile can ohko it from full and Excadrill if it at full might beat it 1 vs 1 but its a giant pain and very often crown is the switch into it with wish protect and regen.

Calm mind Tapu Fini - This is a big threat if crown and Azu are low at health. I would have to psychic noise it and then go to mega sceptile and try and beat it.

Random sub protect Gliscor - One miss turn and thats all she wrote. I know this rare but we lost to it.

Mega Venusaur - Kind of. We have Salamence and Iron Crown but its easy for Mega Venusaur to pivot into this team.

Demon mons - They are not common but demon fini and demon mew will be a problem

Additional Note - Many mons on this team use inaccurate moves so of course I have lost games due to moves missing but thats how mons work. My Banded Tyranitar missed 3 stone edges vs stall in a row and once against Terapagos HO.

Conclusion - This time felt like high risk high reward. They are a lot of users of inaccurate moves on this team but they planned out well overall. I am happy with the progress made on this team. I am open to making tweaks to this team i.e movesets and I am also open to contrsuctive criticism too of the team and where the team could improve. I still want to keep Mega Sceptile and Tyranitar for sure on the team but I am open to replacing the other 4 on this team. I still somewhat feel like keeping Salamence but definitely open to replacing the other 3 and Azumarill was the least effective so far. I think this team is fun and interesting to try out with the only risk of running inaccurate moves. But I dont think people should be afraid to try. While building I did look at VR one hand but on the other hand I looked at the entire dex to see how my stuff can be fulfilled on the team. Thank you very much for reading.

god is dead if this is viable. also garchomp looks like it could be pretty hard to switch in on, waterpon as well if play rough. but you could prb beat both with play. also msciz+rocks looks very hard to switch in on

Garchomp has been difficult only when it anti-leads me like if I lead with Tyranitar and Salamence. With Salamence, I get the intim but I still have to scoute for a Z move. However, I shuffle with Mence + Azu to handle it. I even attack Chomp with Crown because I have a feeling they will want to get up rocks if anything. We have handled waterpon with intimidate + iron crown and even leading to Mega Sceptile killing it with leaf storm after a crown volt switch. Of course, Waterpon is not easy straight up but it has been managable most of the time where I wont get swept by it. You have a point for sure on the mega scizor + rocks situation. I used to run fire punch on my Tyranitar and had some point I ran hidden power fire on my mega sceptile. But then I ran into Gliscors and Kingambits far more while laddering. So i put ice punch on tyranitar and focus blast on mega sceptile. But yes mega scizor with an SD is a problem if Salamence is not healthy. I forgot to mention it there as I faced mega scizor a little less with this team on the laddering journey. I had been on hiatus from showdown and i last played on March 23, 2025 and its been 9 days since I last played. So I dont know if much has changed over these 10 days and plus i am trying out other tiers and will play a little less of nat dex now.
