Song: Lorde | Stoned at the Nail Salon
Genre: Pop / Ballad
Description: Opening with a verse containing "I love this life that I have" and proceeding to sing about the sadness of longing and being lost in the world is just immaculate. To just quote Lorde herself, "the existential crisis starts to creep in where I’m like 'What am I doing? Have i chosen right? Should I be partying more? should I not? should I be working?' It’s just a weird tender time and a lot of big questions tend to emerge." Really beautiful track that's absolutely earned a mention as song of the year.
Song: Kim Petras - Future Starts Now
Description: Taken by Clouds last month, but this stands out as probably my most played song of the year. Kim leading the way in pop music this year with this track alone. An absolute banger: does anything else really need to be said?
Song: Kanye West - Hurricane (feat. The Weeknd & Lil Baby)
Description: It was great to see my favorite artist drop one of my favorite albums this year and this late into his career. This song helped me through some really rough times at the time of it’s drop, and I also always love The Weeknd / Lil Baby on features
Song: Dua Lipa - We're Good

song: Come To Life - Kanye West
description: I don’t think I cried to a song prior to this but it’s amazing, from the production to the vocals. Not really into all the religious aspects in this song and it still emotionally hits me. Love this album, love this song.
Song: YOASOBI - 怪物 (Kaibutsu)
description: one of my most listened to songs of 2021! the vocals from Ikura in this absolutely amazing and (sorry if you can't understand) the lyrics are amazing. produced fantastically by ayase as well of course, as always. the song is super catchy and i could keep on listening to it even after binging it for a week straight. Absolutely adore this song, highly recommend !!!
song: squid - narrator
genre: post-punk, experimental rock
description: i'll play my part....
Genre: J-Pop / J-Rock
Description: King Gnu's pretty based and popular in Japan, their December release is definitely a bop. The chorus goes very hard and the song definitely goes at a fast pace right from the get go. It quickly became my most scrobbled song for last month. Give this song a try!

Song: ZITTI E BUONI - Måneskin
Description: Honestly, this year was a bit depressing for new music for me, probably the least new stuff I’ve found enjoyable of any year. That being said, the few things I’ve enjoyed this year were very fun, and this song is no exception. Måneskin is a fantastic band and I’m excited to see more from them, love their sound.
Other songs I enjoyed this year were Good Days by SZA, Be Sweet by Japanese Breakfast, Montero by Lil Nas X, and Good For You by Olivia Rodrigo. Haven’t had the opportunity to listen to the Little Simz album yet unfortunately, I know I’m missing out big there.
So I don’t have to double post, a brand new song I liked was Double Jump by Joey Valence & Brae, really neat 80s rap vibes from this song. Havent watched the video before but it looks cringe as fuck tbh, just listen on spotify….
#2 – hyunjun hur | baragi_ acoustic
genre: acoustic pop
description: i got really into hyunjun this year, and towards the latter half of the year he quickly rose to one of my most played artists. the acoustic version of this song covers the original – baragi – which released in 2020. i prefer the acoustic version a lot, and it was almost my pick (funnily, another song of his, vo!d, was my original pick) but was slightly edged out by stoned at the nail salon. the song's just laid-back and easy to listen to, that's really it. i find it very enjoyable and refreshing as i don't usually listen to acoustic music. pretty video too!
#3 – doja cat ft. ariana grande | i don't do drugs
genre: hip-pop / pop
description: doja x ariana is a sure-fire way to know the song is gonna be good. initially, i was super disappointed with planet her and hadn't listened since it came out. i decided to give it another listen and still didn't like it, but this song was easily the standout to me (and get into it yuh!). doja and ariana's voices bounce so well off of each other, and the thumping bass throughout the entire song is amazing. ariana's verse in particular is infectious and when they finally combine vocals in the final chorus, the song's entire build up feels incredible.
#4 – tommy genesis | a woman is a god
genre: house / rap
description: resident and only tommy fan (besides Kennedy...) and had to give a mention to my favorite song she released this year. her debut album, tommy, was incredible, and i was really looking forward to the follow-up – goldilocks x. a woman is a god was the second single released from the album and it's the track i go back to most frequently. the looping thump of the bass and the quickness of the lyrics blend so nicely and the track just leaves you fully enamored the entire time, and the way it loops begs for you to listen again.
#5 – lorde | the path
genre: folk pop
description: another lorde mention! the path is likely my favorite lorde song; it's gorgeous from the second it begins to the second it ends. "if you're looking for a savior, well, that's not me" caused a cultural shift, honestly. the build up right into the explosive bridge is just insane and it's impossible to not feel the emotion she's conveying. a perfect opener to one album in particular that grabbed my attention this year and deserves its own special mention...
album of the year: lorde | solar power
genre: pop / folk pop
description: honestly, i didn't listen to a ton of new albums this year (combination of low interest and my favorite artists not dropping). despite that, solar power clearly shined above the rest as my favorite. i'm not too sure many other albums could even top it if they had dropped, the album's just insanely good. i was a casual lorde fan for a long time and liked both of her first two albums a lot, but solar power just clicked with me in a way her first two didn't. i consider it her best, personally. the album has the perfect blend of upbeat, empowering songs, with classic lorde melodrama. this album had a grip on me for like two months straight, and i still revisit it now. i've already listed two tracks from the album, but i'd like to mention mood ring and the man with the axe as other highlights. really solid album from lorde and easily my favorite album from 2021.
Song:Kendrick Lamar - Love ft. Zacari

Oh hell yeah, got a ton for this

Song: Rufus (feat. Chaka Khan) | Sweet Thing
Description: Starting out with one of my favs, this song is a really smooth song and Chaka Khan kills it on the vocals, her voice is like silk and so powerful x) quintessential love song for me, play it nonstop around this time of year
Song: Natalie Cole | This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)
Description: This song is a little ruined by being overplayed in commercials for me, but it's an amazing song nonetheless, I feel like it really captures the joy of being in love, especially a new love that you think can't end
Song: The Supremes | Baby Love
Genre: Rhythm & blues
Description: The Supremes are unmatched at making classic love songs that just make you feel good, dunno what else to say
Song: Adele | Make You Feel My Love
Genre: Folk Rock
Description: This is a heartbreakingly good song by Adele & written by Bob Dylan. It's very hard not to be touched listening to Adele sing about being in love with someone and doing everything you can to let them know it.
Song: Paramore | The Only Exception
Description: Love love love Paramore, and this is one of the first songs I remember from them as a kid. It's always been a favorite of mine and I'm still touched by it. I feel like a lot of us have experienced things with friends/family/our own relationships that have ruined the idea of love/dating but this song kinda gives me hope that someone will change that lol
Song: Nelly (feat. Kelly Rowland) | Dilemma
Description: Closing out, I included this song mostly just because Kelly and Nelly make a great pair and I love the hook by Kelly in this song.
It's ya boy Buffy with some bonus recs for this month's theme since there are sooo many songs about love, including a bunch that I love. Expect to see a lot of crazy stuff all over the place from this list and I'll probably keep editing in more songs as the month goes on. Anyway, let's get into it!
Song: Ms. Lauryn Hill - Lost Ones
Genre: Rap, Hip Hop, R&B/Soul
Description: Mainly picked this for the tail end of the song. Around the last minute or so, there's a nice little skit about love that makes the tail end of this son the perfect launching point for this list. It also helps that this is my favorite track from this legendary album ;)
Song: Nicole Kidman & Ewan McGregor - Come What May
Deacription: I know, I know, Moulin Rouge is a jukebox musical so I'm sure this song/a majority of this song is probably someone else's. Having said that, Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor have some great songs from this film and this one is the best.
Song: Angel Olsen - Lark
Description: An incredibly powerful roller coaster of emotion on a flawless album, this still stands out as one of my favorite songs.
Song: Wolf Alice - Your Loves Whore
Description: Fittingly enough a song not only about love, but also has love in the title and the album title! Not my favorite Wolf Alice songs, but still definitely one of their best. If you like great instrumentation and unique sounds and just overall great alternative bands, definitely check out Wolf Alice; they're definitely one of my favorite artists
ps username: baker's suboptimal
song: Lemon Demon - White Bread Boyfriend
genre: kind of alt rock
description: like literally one of my favorite songs from Dinosaurchestra. it's about teenage relationships being kind of shallow and an amazing song in general. also it can be interpreted as a boy who doesn't like girls and a girl who doesn't like boys pretending to date so they aren't pressured, according to a lot of people in the comments
ps username: dex
song: Great Mass of Color by Deafheaven
genre: alt rock
description: My favorite song of 2021! It puts me in the mood to lay back in my bed, stare at my ceiling without a thought in my head, and just let the sound wash over me.
here's a non-valentines day recommendation!!
PS username: baker's suboptimal
song: Lemon Demon - The Saga Of You, Confused Destroyer Of Planets
genre: alt rock
desc: it's about someone who keeps falling and blacking out and when they wake up they end up literally destroying the entire planet. it's just a fun little tune in general!!
March Recs! Theme: Favorite Song from an Artist's Debut Album!
Song: THE BOYZ | Break your rules
Description: Definitely my favorite song by them. Shows off all of the member's voices incredibly well, and how well their voices mesh together. I love the lyrics, too. The build-up to the song is just fantastic; when they all come together with overlapping lyrics and continue to keep going it's just in different areas. Even the outro is the cherry on top, slowing things back down for a smooth ending. Cute song.
Song: Wu-Tang Clan - Da Mystery of Chessboxin'
Genre: Hip-Hop | Rap
Description: "The game of chess is like a sword fight. You must think first before you move." For debut related themes, hard not to pick one of the greatest debut albums out there. also features Masta Killa's only verse on the entire album, and it is arguably one of the best verses on the whole album.
Song: Travis Scott - Drugs You Should Try It
Genre: Psychedelic Rap
Description: the fact that this debut album isn’t on streaming services makes me cry everyday. This song specifically gives off such a calm psychedelic hip hop vibe to it which imo I don’t see a lot of nowadays.
Song: The Weeknd - Loft Music
Genre: Alternative R&B
Description: You won't regret spending time in the House of Balloons
Dynasty - Rina Sawayama
Description: Come on now… the grand opening to this debut album really set the whole tone for what’s to come and what a song it is. Who’s Gonna Save U Now is a close second on this album for me, love the stadium feel of that one and the VOCALS on both.
Broken Clocks - SZA
Description: Easily one of my favorite songs of all time and one of my favorite albums of all time, this song just hits the spot in every way
Sign of the Times - Harry Styles
Description: This album has solid songs all the way through, but nothing is super standout on it for me bar Sign of the Times. The first single and most popular song of the album, it’s clear to see why it’s so popular. This song is honestly just a classic in my opinion and I’ll be listening to it for years to come.
for the theme:
PS user: baker's suboptimal
song: Lemon Demon - Hazel's Modus Operandi
genre: alt rock
description: it's a really good song- it's kinda all over the place but there IS a recurring theme of calling someone and/or cycles (summer fall winter spring) and it's honestly impressive for his first album (as LD) which is great!! he's developed since then but his early albums are still great
April Recs! Theme: April Fool's! – Rec as Another Auth
Song: THE BOYZ | Break your rules
Description: I first became infatuated with The Boyz when Hyunjun and Yoo Jun were talking about "Sax Blue" and honestly it shook me to my core.. ever since then I've been on a 4 month spiral of just listening to the boyz and frantically watching BL drama.. is it the best way to spend my time? No. But I've never been happier. I only wish Hyunjun Could be my "Probe" Instead.
Gota Love Yaoi
Song: Logic | Wu Tang Forever

Song: Between the Buried and Me | Swim to the Moon
Genre: Progressive Metal
Description: Yesterday night I went to do a stand up comedy open mic in Hollywood. Before the mic I went to grab a bite. And on the way to the restaurant, I overheard pedestrians around my age, walking towards me, talking about Donda. And I felt genuine sorrow for them because they well never experience the two previous nights in a row I had by watching BTBAM play live. Kanye can’t hold a candle next to BTBAM’s talent. I almost felt like getting in those pedestrians’ faces and telling them off for being into Donda and not having a clue Colors 2 is out. It absolutely breaks my metal loving heart. Fuck trends, fuck pop music, fuck, man (I’m sad now).
Song: Kero Kero Bonito - It's Bugsnax!
Genre: VTuber, Video Game
Description: As a newly appointed room owner of the highly esteemed VTubers room, I thought it would be a great idea to shine a light on an underrated genre- VT Music. One of my personal favorites, Kero Kero Bonito has taken the virtual tubing scene by storm in recent years. Hatsune Miku could never.
Song: Yugo Kanno - il vento d'oro

I looked over the menu, and the squid ink pasta with shrimp, cherry tomatoes, a white wine reduction sauce, and just a teaspoon of red pepper looks absolutely divine. Yeah, thank you so much! Thanks!
Song: Nyan Cat | Nyan Cat

Mixing happy hardcore and adorable visuals, Nyan Cat managed to create a groundbreaking method of production in both visual and auditory form which can only be described as a historical overturning of the conservative notion of "genre".
song: Towns Van Zandt - Nothin' - Colter Wall Cover genre: country
description: A somewhat darker rendition of a Towns Van Zandt classic. Mr Wall always puts an immense amount of soul into his work and this is no exception. A good song covered by a good artist, what more can you ask for :3c
Fugees - Killing Me Softly With His Song
description: Roberta Flack’s original Killing Me Softly With His Song is a timeless classic, but the Fugees cover of this song brings a completely different and beautiful vibe to it. I grew up with the Fugees and this song means a lot to me, I’d say it’s one of my favorite covers ever.
