Highlights

Threat of the Round:

: Reuniclus comfortably walls and sets up on both mons, so it's a pretty good pick against this core.

Additional Notes:

: breloom sucks

Round 65 Core: Mega Tyranitar + Excadrill

Tyranitar @ Tyranitarite
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 168 HP / 252 Atk / 88 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Pursuit
- Stone Edge
- Fire Punch

Excadrill @ Normalium Z
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Giga Impact

  • Sand is pretty good rn, and this core is at the centre of the majority of those sand teams. Normalium Excadrill may look a bit off, but it's a great option to help it break through would-be counters like Rotom-W, Zapdos, and Pelipper.
  • Try to post only OU viable Pokémon and don't post sets specifically for this core, additionally your threat should not be complete deadweight against teams that do not feature the core of Mega Tyranitar + Excadrill. Everyone have a good day!

Mega Alakazam

Alakazam @ Alakazite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Recover
- Shadow Ball

Mega Alakazam can't switch directly against those Pokemon (altought can try it if a Stealth Rock from Mega Tyranitar or Swords Dance from Excadrill, but it's not recomendable at all) and OHKO both of them with Focus Blast. In Excadrill's case, it can copy Sand Rush and by extension, being faster that it even under Sand. Stealth Rock damage is desirable to always OHKO Mega Tyranitar, but it can OHKO it most of the time even without this prior damage.

252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar-Mega in Sand: 376-444 (98.1 - 115.9%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar-Mega in Sand: 376-444 (98.1 - 115.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Excadrill: 464-548 (128.1 - 151.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Reserving Tangrowth

1200px-465Tangrowth.png

Tangrowth @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 212 Def / 48 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Giga Drain
- Knock Off
- Sleep Powder
- Hidden Power Fire

Tangrowth can come in on both mons of this core pretty well as its good physical bulks allows it to withstand the moves - which both of these mons can go for - pretty well.
It also can come in constantly and checking them pretty well as it has its amazing ability in regenerator, which lets it do its job constantly throughout the entire game.
Giga Drain might do not much but it can still be helpful to gain some Recovery back and Leftovers also helps it in its Recovery process.
Sleep Powder can threaten either Mega-Tyranitar or Excadrill and both don't like getting Powdered and put to sleep.
Excadrill is a threatening sweeper with the Sand at the OU tier, but it cannot even OHKO Tangrowth with a +2 Z-Giga Impact from Full.
In overall Tangrowth does a great job of checking this core defensively and both Mega-Tar and Excadrill have trouble breaking through it.

Calcs:
Calcs vs Mega Tar:
0 SpA Tangrowth Giga Drain vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar-Mega in Sand: 102-120 (26.6 - 31.3%) -- 25.5% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock
26.6 - 31.3% (12.6 - 14.8% recovered)

252+ Atk Tyranitar-Mega Pursuit vs. 248 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 55-66 (13.6 - 16.3%) -- possible 8HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Tyranitar-Mega Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 135-160 (33.4 - 39.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Tyranitar-Mega Fire Punch vs. 248 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 136-162 (33.7 - 40.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Calcs vs Excadrill:
0 SpA Tangrowth Giga Drain vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Excadrill: 126-148 (34.8 - 40.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
34.8 - 40.8% (15.6 - 18.3% recovered)
0 SpA Tangrowth Hidden Power Fire vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Excadrill: 134-158 (37 - 43.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Excadrill Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 54-63 (13.3 - 15.6%) -- possible 9HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Excadrill Iron Head vs. 248 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 85-102 (21 - 25.3%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Excadrill Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 248 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 142-168 (35.2 - 41.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

at +2:
+2 252 Atk Excadrill Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 106-126 (26.3 - 31.2%) -- 100% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252 Atk Excadrill Iron Head vs. 248 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 171-202 (42.4 - 50.1%) -- 37.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252 Atk Excadrill Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 248 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 284-335 (70.4 - 83.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Charizard Mega-Y

Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Flamethrower
- Focus Blast
- Solar Beam
- Roost

With a free switch in, Zard sets sun, removing Tar's SPD boost from sand. It OHKOs Tyranitar with Focus Blast and Excadrill with Flamethrower. Don't try and beat this core turn 1, since Tar will mega last and set sand, making Focus Blast 2HKO.

Calcs VS
:

252 SpA Charizard Focus Blast vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar-Mega: 396-468 (103.3 - 122.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO (Sun)
252 SpA Charizard Focus Blast vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar-Mega in Sand: 268-316 (69.9 - 82.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (Sand)

Calcs VS
:

252 SpA Charizard Flamethrower vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Excadrill: 372-438 (102.7 - 120.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO (Sun)
252 SpA Charizard Focus Blast vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Excadrill: 328-388 (90.6 - 107.1%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

Reserving Skarmory:

Skarmory @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Roost
- Spikes
- Whirlwind
- Counter

252+ Atk Tyranitar-Mega Fire Punch vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 124-146 (37.2 - 43.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+2 252 Atk Excadrill Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 127-150 (38.1 - 45%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Skarmory is an hard-counter to both. I have nothing more to say.

Pointing out TankChomp, but this could be most variants of Chomp

garchomp.gif

Garchomp @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic

Explanation and Calcs:

Garchomp doesn't take sand damage, takes little to no damage from any of their moves, and can hit back hard. Calcs-wise, the only move that can kill TankChomp is a +2 Breakneck Blitz from Excadrill:

+2 252 Atk Excadrill Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Garchomp: 465-548 (110.7 - 130.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

But all other moves the two mons would use either require chip damage or multiple set ups:

+2 252 Atk Excadrill Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Garchomp: 349-412 (83 - 98%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Tyranitar-Mega Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Garchomp: 111-131 (26.4 - 31.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

And in return, TankChomp with 0 investment in attack does this:
0 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Excadrill: 408-482 (112.7 - 133.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 168 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar-Mega: 192-228 (50.1 - 59.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Most forms of Garchomp handle these two well, with the exclusion of either coverage (Ice Punch Tyranitar) or sheer, raw power (+2 Breakneck Blitz) being the only way these two can break through TankChomp. If you can either bait these things out or get Chomp in at a good time, you can easily OHKO or 2HKO both Mega-Tar and Excadrill with ease.

Overall, I'd say it's a full counter to Tyranitar but only a check to Excadrill. So I'd say this would belong in the "check" category because of that as well as possible coverage making it an imperfect counter.

Greninja-Ash (M) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Battle Bond
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Dark Pulse
- Water Shuriken
- Spikes

Ash Greninja is the big offensive Pokémon that is a major annoyance to Sand. It OHKOs Mega Tyranitar after Stealth Rock damage and shuts down any Excadrill sweep through the priority of Water Shuriken.

Swampert-Mega @ Swampertite
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rain Dance
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch

Mega Swampert can switch into both members of this core with relative ease and take them down with its super effective STAB attacks. Additionally, it can disrupt Sand Stream with Rain Dance and under rain, obviously outspeeds both members of the core in addition to OHKOing them.

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 248 HP / 104 Def / 156 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Heavy Slam
- Flamethrower
- Leech Seed
- Protect

Most Steelas are SpDef these days, but wherever the sand core shows its face, so too does PhysDef Steela. She checks MegaTar even with Fire Punch (it hurts, but Steela has recovery and MegaTar doesn't), counters the ever-living testicles out of Exca, and is otherwise does free to do her fat boat thing.

252+ Atk Tyranitar-Mega Fire Punch vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Celesteela: 172-204 (43.3 - 51.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (80 BP) vs. 168 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar-Mega: 122-146 (31.8 - 38.1%) -- 94.9% chance to 3HKO (guaranteed 3HKO after Leech Seed damage)

+2 252 Atk Excadrill Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Celesteela: 179-211 (45 - 53.1%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Celesteela Flamethrower vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Excadrill: 194-230 (53.5 - 63.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Sire quagsire

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Relaxed Nature
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Toxic/Curse

This dude just chill and suck the momentum and pressure from the core away.

252+ Atk Tyranitar-Mega Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 85-101 (21.5 - 25.6%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Excadrill Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 135-160 (34.2 - 40.6%) -- 53.5% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
Possible damage amounts: (135, 138, 139, 141, 142, 144, 145, 147, 148, 150, 151, 153, 154, 156, 157, 160)

Big thanks to Mellow for doing this for me last week, I was a bit busy.
Highlights

Threat of the Round:

: Physically Defensive Tangrowth is often overlooked quite a bit, but it's a really good set that, in this case in particular, can be very annoying to nearly impossible to deal with for this core.

Additional Notes:

Round 66 Core: Zapdos + Tapu Fini

Zapdos @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Static
EVs: 248 HP / 184 Def / 76 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Discharge
- Heat Wave
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Roost

Tapu Fini @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 16 Def / 12 SpA / 40 SpD / 192 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Taunt
- Defog
- Moonblast / Nature's Madness

  • Zapdos + Tapu Fini is a very potent core within the current metagame. Zapdos is capable of handling Grass-types like Kartana, Tapu Bulu, and Ferrothorn, while Tapu Fini has a good matchup against common Stealth Rock setters like Heatran.
  • Try to post only OU viable Pokémon and don't post sets specifically for this core, additionally your threat should not be complete deadweight against teams that do not feature the core of Zapdos + Tapu Fini. Everyone have a good day!

Reserving Mega Venusaur

Shiny_Mega_Venusaur_XY.png

Venusaur @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 248 HP / 88 Def / 156 SpD / 16 Spe
Calm Nature
- Leech Seed
- Sludge Bomb
- Synthesis
- Hidden Power Fire

Mega Venusaur can switch into both these Members and can tank any hit from them, as Thick Fat allows Mega Venusaur to tank Heat Wave and Hidden Power Ice from Zapdos and Zapdos won't be Pressure
which means, that mega Venusaur can't get PP stalled that easily. Also Tapu Fini's own Misty Terrain can help Mega Venusaur, that it does not get Scald burned nor Discharge parad.
Zapdos isn't protected by Misty Terrain so Mega Venusaur has a chance to Sludge Bomb poison Zapdos, which can be able to hinder its longevity in the long run.
Also Mega Venusaur can spread a super effective Move on Tapu Fini with Sludge Bomb and when Tapu Finis terrain runs out Mega Venus Sludge Bomb can have a poison chance there.
Synthesis allows Mega Venusaur to help its own longevity, and Leech Seed can be used as a secondary way of regaining health for Mega Venusaur.

Calcs:
Tapu Fini
0 SpA Venusaur-Mega Sludge Bomb vs. 248 HP / 40+ SpD Tapu Fini: 164-194 (47.8 - 56.5%) -- 32.4% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
12 SpA Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 156+ SpD Venusaur-Mega: 33-40 (9 - 11%) -- possibly the worst move ever
12 SpA Tapu Fini Scald vs. 248 HP / 156+ SpD Venusaur-Mega: 29-34 (7.9 - 9.3%) -- possibly the worst move ever

Zapdos:
0 SpA Venusaur-Mega Sludge Bomb vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Zapdos: 127-150 (33.1 - 39.1%) -- 16% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
0 SpA Venusaur-Mega Sludge Bomb vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Zapdos: 127-150 (33.1 - 39.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and poison damage
0 SpA Zapdos Discharge vs. 248 HP / 156+ SpD Venusaur-Mega: 36-42 (9.9 - 11.5%) -- possible 8HKO after Stealth Rock
0 SpA Zapdos Hidden Power Ice vs. 248 HP / 156+ SpD Thick Fat Venusaur-Mega: 36-44 (9.9 - 12.1%) -- possible 8HKO after Stealth Rock
0 SpA Zapdos Heat Wave vs. 248 HP / 156+ SpD Thick Fat Venusaur-Mega: 56-68 (15.4 - 18.7%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock

Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

Tapu Fini is a somewhat free setup fodder for Kartana, which fucks up the entire core at +2.

reserving Koko

Tapu Koko @ Electrium Z
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 20 HP / 252 SpA / 20 SpD / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Defog
- Roost
- U-turn
Against Zapdos:
252 SpA Tapu Koko Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Zapdos in Electric Terrain: 378-445 (98.6 - 116.1%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Zapdos in Electric Terrain: 195-231 (50.9 - 60.3%) -- 89.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Zapdos Heat Wave vs. 20 HP / 20 SpD Tapu Koko: 102-121 (35.6 - 42.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Against Tapu Fini:

*Misty terrain:
252 SpA Tapu Koko Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 248 HP / 40+ SpD Tapu Fini: 324-384 (94.4 - 111.9%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 40+ SpD Tapu Fini: 168-200 (48.9 - 58.3%) -- 60.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
12 SpA Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 20 HP / 20 SpD Tapu Koko: 123-145 (43 - 50.6%) -- 3.9% chance to 2HKO

*Electric terrain:
252 SpA Tapu Koko Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 248 HP / 40+ SpD Tapu Fini in Electric Terrain: 488-576 (142.2 - 167.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 40+ SpD Tapu Fini in Electric Terrain: 254-300 (74 - 87.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
12 SpA Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 20 HP / 20 SpD Tapu Koko: 123-145 (43 - 50.6%) -- 3.9% chance to 2HKO

If Zapdos is in the terrain:

You can switch easily on Koko and loses less than 40% of life. Then you threatening Zapdos of OHKO with Z-move or you can spam thunderbolt because Zapdos doesn't have Leftovers or Pressure. Moreover, Koko doesn't care about discharge because Koko is electric. Tapu Fini can't switch into Koko because he's 2HKO with Thunderbolt. And you can heal yourself with roost too.

If Tapu Fini is in the terrain:

You switch on Koko and loses less than 50% of life. Then you threatening Tapu Fini of OHKO with Z-move or you can spam thunderbolt because he doesn't have heal move. Moreover, Koko changes the terrain of Fini, which is an advantage against allies which benefit of misty terrain (like Volcarona or Mawile ). Zapdos can't switch into Koko because he's 2HKO with Thunderbolt. And you can heal yourself with roost too.

Tapu Lele @ Choice Specs
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid / Modest Nature
- Psychic
- Moonblast
- Psyshock
- Hidden Power Fire / Focus Blast

Lele never comes in on these two unless you make amazing predictions with it, but once its in, Zap takes 94% minimum from Psychic on Timid variants and Fini takes 49 minimum from Timid Psyshock. These become an OHKO and 2HKO respectively if you go Modest or if you have Rocks up.

reserving protean gren

Greninja @ Fightinium Z
Ability: Protean
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Low Kick
- Gunk Shot
- Ice Beam
- Spikes

Protean Greninja is a big threat to this core thanks to its super effective coverage for both Tapu Fini and Zapdos that 2HKOs both at worst. It can even OHKO Tapu Fini 50% of the time after Stealth Rock. Greninja can also potentially set Spikes up when they switch out, punishing their switches and the other members on their team. The only issue is that Greninja can't switch in to either member safely and can still potentially be 2HKOd by both members of the core even after it changes typing.

252 Atk Protean Greninja Gunk Shot vs. 248 HP / 16 Def Tapu Fini: 276-326 (80.4 - 95%) -- 50% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
4 SpA Greninja Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Zapdos: 218-260 (56.9 - 67.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Zapdos Heat Wave vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Greninja: 220-260 (77.1 - 91.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (After Greninja becomes an Ice-type)
252 Atk Greninja Gunk Shot vs. 248 HP / 16 Def Tapu Fini: 276-326 (80.4 - 95%) -- 50% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
12 SpA Tapu Fini Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Greninja: 111-132 (38.9 - 46.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO (After Greninja changes type)

Nidoking

Nidoking @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Earth Power
- Sludge Wave
- Ice Beam
- Stealth Rock / Fire Blast

While not a common Pokemon in the OU metagame, Nidoking preys upon the featured core. Max Speed lets it outpace both Zapdos and Tapu Fini and hit them both ridiculously hard with Ice Beam and Sludge Wave, respectively, OHKOing both after Stealth Rock. Speaking of rocks, Nidoking makes for a solid Stealth Rock setter against this core thanks to its STAB Sludge Wave threatening out the core's Defogger, Tapu Fini.

Nidoking also seriously hurts many of this core's common partners, such as Heatran, Mega Mawile, Magearna, Tangrowth, Jirachi, and Gliscor. Should you opt to run Fire Blast instead of Stealth Rock, that list of Pokemon Nidoking does well against gains Mega Scizor, Ferrothorn, and Celesteela.
