[OVERVIEW]

Torterra's combination of Grass / Ground typing, resistance to Ground-type moves, and solid defenses lets it reliably take on common Stealth Rock users such as Steelix, Diancie, and Rhydon as well as prominent offensive threats such as Passimian, Heliolisk, and Whimsicott. Torterra's access to Synthesis sets it apart from most other Stealth Rock users by making it more self-sufficient, and its high base Attack stat and access to strong STAB Grass- and Ground-type moves in Wood Hammer and Earthquake prevent it from being passive and letting Grass- and Ground-resistant Pokemon such as Decidueye, Braviary, and Sceptile easily switch in. Access to Swords Dance and Rock Polish combined with near perfect type coverage allows Torterra to become a threatening wallbreaker as well, easily dispatching common physical walls like Slowbro, Steelix, Diancie, and Garbodor. Unfortunately, Torterra's unimpressive Speed stat and weaknesses to prevalent typings leaves it easily revenge killed by common Pokemon like Sneasel, Vanilluxe, Braviary, Vivillon, and Magmortar. Additionally, Torterra is not only a Grass-type that cannot reliably switch into Scald by virtue of its Ground typing, but also one that is severely crippled by a potential burn or Toxic, making it a less effective check to common defensive Water-type Pokemon like Slowbro and Vaporeon.

Moves
========

Stealth Rock provides entry hazard support for Torterra's team and weakens its common switch-ins such as Braviary, Vileplume, and Vikavolt. STAB Wood Hammer threatens Water-types like Slowbro, Slowking, and Vaporeon. Earthquake prevents Fire-types such as Incineroar and Delphox from safely switching into Torterra while also hitting other Grass-resistant Pokemon such as Guzzlord, Garbodor, Ferroseed, and Druddigon. Synthesis gives Torterra a source of reliable recovery, restoring health lost from switching into entry hazards and Pokemon like Diancie, Passimian, and Heliolisk.

Set Details
========

248 HP EVs and 136 Special Defense EVs let Torterra take two uses of Hyper Voice from Life Orb Heliolisk after Stealth Rock damage as well as two uses of Moonblast from Choice Specs Whimsicott. 68 Defense EVs allow Torterra to take Close Combat from Choice Scarf Passimian twice after Stealth Rock damage. The remaining 56 Attack EVs alongside an Adamant nature let Torterra hit as hard as possible and 2HKO Stealth Rock setters like Diancie, Rhydon, and Palossand as well as OHKO offensive Garbodor with Earthquake. Leftovers provides Torterra with passive recovery and a source of healing other than Synthesis, letting Torterra preserve Synthesis's limited PP. Overgrow gives Torterra a boost to Wood Hammer's power when Torterra is below a third of its maximum health.

Usage Tips
========

Torterra should aim to set Stealth Rock up as early as possible, as this limits the ability of its checks, such as Vanilluxe, Braviary, and Delphox, to switch in and punishes the opponent for switching in general. Due to Torterra's advantageous matchup against other Stealth Rock setters like Rhydon and Palossand, switch Torterra directly into them or on a predicted switch, as Torterra can threaten them out and set up Stealth Rock itself. Be mindful of using Synthesis too frequently, as while it is Torterra's best form of recovery, it also has a low amount of PP. Additionally, Torterra must watch out for Vanilluxe switching in on Synthesis, as hail will reduce Synthesis's effectiveness and Vanilluxe will force Torterra to switch out. Because Torterra has solid Attack for a defensive Pokemon and a dual typing resisted only by Flying, Grass, and Bug, throwing off an attack to chip foes is relatively free of drawbacks. However, be careful to not use Wood Hammer too frequently, as the recoil damage it causes will stack up, causing Torterra to use Synthesis more often than it would like to. While Torterra does have good special bulk, it must still be wary of strong neutral hits from Pokemon like Choice Specs Diancie, Guzzlord, and Sceptile.

Team Options
========

Offensive Diancie is a great Torterra partner because it can switch into Fire- and Flying-type moves aimed at Torterra while also threatening out Ice-types with its Rock-type moves. In return, Torterra checks Ground-types such as Steelix, Rhydon, and Palossand. Fire-types like Incineroar, Delphox, and Magmortar appreciate Torterra's ability to check Ground-types and pressure Water-types such as Slowbro, Vaporeon, and Samurott. Bulky Incineroar and Delphox work particularly well defensively alongside Torterra, as Incineroar takes on Ice-types such as Sneasel, Vanilluxe, and Cryogonal, while Delphox provides Torterra with Wish support. Cleric support from Mega Audino and Vaporeon aids Torterra's vulnerability to status. Additionally, Mega Audino and Vaporeon provide Wish support for Torterra, further bolstering its survivability. Entry hazard control from Pokemon like Xatu and Silvally-Steel helps to not only prevent Torterra from being down down by entry hazards but also block or remove Toxic Spikes. Water-types such as Slowbro and Slowking appreciate Torterra checking Electric-types such as Heliolisk and Rotom for them. In return, they can check Ice- and Fire-types such as Vanilluxe, Sneasel, Delphox, and Houndoom. Garbodor can form an entry hazard-setting core with Torterra, providing the team with Spikes and Toxic Spikes as well as a means of absorbing Toxic Spikes set by the opponent. In return, Torterra threatens entry hazard setters such as Steelix and Rhydon, which give Garbodor notable trouble.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Swords Dance raises Torterra's Attack by two stages, making it a fearsome wallbreaker. Wood Hammer is Torterra's strongest move, hits bulky Water-types like Slowbro and Slowking as well as Rotom for heavy damage, and becomes a powerful Bloom Doom when used alongside Grassium Z. Earthquake provides coverage against most switch-ins to Wood Hammer, including Incineroar, Steelix, Garbodor, and Silvally-Steel. Stone Edge hits Flying-types like Braviary, Xatu, Vivillon, and Golbat super effectively, provides neutral coverage against Grass-types like Whimsicott, and becomes Continental Crush when powered up by Rockium Z. Rock Polish boosts Torterra's Speed by two stages, letting it pose as both a wallbreaker and cleaner when used in conjunction with Swords Dance. Synthesis lets Torterra make use of its useful resistances to Rock and Ground by letting it recover health lost from switching into Pokemon like Steelix and Rhydon, but Torterra sorely misses the coverage provided by Stone Edge.

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack and Speed investment with a Jolly nature makes Torterra as fast and strong as possible. An Adamant nature can be used to OHKO Steelix with +2 Earthquake after Stealth Rock damage but is not ideal on Rock Polish variants, as +2 Torterra is then slower than both Choice Scarf Passimian and Braviary. Grassium Z turns Wood Hammer into Bloom Doom, letting Torterra OHKO defensive Slowbro and Pyukumuku. Additionally, Bloom Doom does not cause recoil damage, and it can provide a strong nuke if Torterra is in Overgrow range. Alternatively, Rockium Z turns Stone Edge into a 100% accurate Rock-type move. Overgrow further boosts Torterra's Wood Hammer and Bloom Doom if Torterra is at less than a third of its maximum HP.

Usage Tips
========

Torterra should make use of its resistances to Ground and Rock to switch safely into Pokemon such as Steelix and Rhydon, set up Swords Dance, and attempt to wallbreak. While Torterra does sport a useful immunity to Electric, letting it block Volt Switch from Pokemon like Rotom and Heliolisk, it should not try to switch directly into these Pokemon, as its lack of defensive investment means it cannot effectively tank hits. Additionally, some Rotom variants have Will-O-Wisp, making it risky for Torterra to switch into. While Torterra does threaten out Water-types like Slowbro, Slowking, and Vaporeon by virtue of its strong Wood Hammer, it must be wary when switching in, as a burn from Scald will mitigate Torterra's ability to wallbreak. Torterra's Speed stat is middling even when invested; thus, eliminating faster threats like Vanilluxe, Braviary, and Magmortar is helpful in letting Torterra wallbreak. Using Bloom Doom on a Pokemon with a high HP stat, such as Hariyama or Vaporeon, is beneficial as to not take heavy recoil from Wood Hammer. If using Rockium Z, it is best to save Torterra's Z-Move for when its usage is absolutely necessary, as Torterra struggles to break Guzzlord without Continental Crush. Rock Polish is best saved for usage until there are no Grass- or Flying-types left or they are sufficiently weakened for Torterra to KO without a Swords Dance boost. If using Synthesis, use it to recover health lost to chip damage from entry hazards and damaging moves from opposing entry hazard setters like Diancie, Rhydon, and Palossand.

Team Options
========

Entry hazards work wonders alongside Torterra, as they make wallbreaking easier. Notably, Stealth Rock allows Torterra to always OHKO Steelix with +2 Earthquake if using an Adamant nature. Diancie is a great partner for Torterra, taking Fire- and Flying-type moves, threatening Ice-types with its Rock-type moves, and providing Heal Bell support. In return, Torterra takes advantage of Diancie drawing in Steelix and Rhydon by setting up on them while also taking little damage from their Ground-type moves. Garbodor can set up Spikes to help make breaking physical walls like Guzzlord, Hariyama, and Vileplume less difficult. In return, Torterra punishes Ground-types that switch into Garbodor like Rhydon and Palossand. Due to Torterra's below-average Speed, speed control from Choice Scarf users like Passimian, Rotom, and Heliolisk is appreciated. Passimian in particular is a great partner, as it baits in bulky Water-types that Torterra can use as setup fodder like Slowbro and Vaporeon while also being able to safely bring Torterra in via U-turn. Rotom is also very effective alongside Torterra, checking threatening Flying-types like Braviary, Vivillon, and Scyther while also providing pivot support with Volt Switch. Because of Torterra's 4x weakness to Ice, it is easily revenge killed by Pokemon like Sneasel, Vanilluxe, and Piloswine. Therefore, Ice-resistant Pokemon like Incineroar, Slowbro, defensive Hariyama, and Magmortar are helpful to have. If not using Stone Edge, Torterra will struggle to dispatch Flying-types. Ice-, Electric-, and Rock-types like Vanilluxe, Heliolisk, and Rhydon help to pressure such Flying-types.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Toxic can be used on the defensive set to prevent Pokemon like Decidueye, Braviary, and Dhelmise from switching in as easily. Leech Seed is also a viable alternative on the defensive set, but dropping Synthesis is risky, as it is more reliable than Leech Seed at recovering HP. Protect can be used instead of Synthesis to scout Choice item users like Passimian, Sneasel, and Aerodactyl while also giving Torterra free passive recovery from Leftovers, although having no reliable recovery makes Torterra much easier to weaken. A specially defensive Cure set could be used to make use of Torterra's all-around solid bulk, but Torterra's weaknesses to common attacking types in Ice, Fire, and Flying makes this kind of set hard to pull off. Roar lets Torterra phaze setup sweepers such as Decidueye, Magnet Rise Klinklang, and Braviary, which may try to take advantage of its inability to threaten them significantly. Roar also synergizes well with Stealth Rock, letting Torterra rack up chip damage on Pokemon trying to switch into Torterra's Grass- and Ground-type moves like Whimsicott and Vivillon.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ice-type moves**: Sneasel and Vanilluxe threaten to OHKO Torterra with Icicle Crash and Blizzard, respectively, but neither appreciates switching directly in. Ice Shard from Piloswine greatly threatens offensive Torterra variants. Alolan Sandslash outspeeds defensive Torterra and can KO it with Icicle Crash after minimal chip damage. Cryogonal threatens to KO defensive Torterra with Freeze-Dry after some chip damage and survives a Wood Hammer from it. Ice Beam from the likes of Assault Vest Slowbro and specially offensive Samurott easily KOes Torterra, although neither Slowbro nor Samurott wants to directly switch in. Sceptile can switch into Torterra's STAB moves and threaten it with Choice Specs-boosted Hidden Power Ice.

**Flying-types**: Braviary, Vivillon, and Scyther easily come in on Torterra variants lacking Stone Edge and set up with Bulk Up, Quiver Dance, or Swords Dance. Xatu stops the defensive set from setting Stealth Rock and can whittle it down with Night Shade. Sigilyph takes no damage from Stealth Rock, easily takes Torterra's STAB moves, and retaliates with Air Slash. Golbat takes on any Torterra lacking Stone Edge with ease and can hit it hard with Brave Bird.

**Fire-types**: Incineroar KOes defensive Torterra after one layer of Spikes with Flare Blitz. Magmortar, Delphox, and Houndoom can easily dispatch Torterra with their strong Fire-type moves, but they cannot reliably switch in.

**Grass-types**: Decidueye can switch into any move other than Stone Edge from Torterra and set up Swords Dance. Sceptile takes little damage from Torterra's STAB moves and can retaliate with Hidden Power Ice. Dhelmise fears only a boosted Z-Move and threatens to OHKO with Choice Band-boosted Power Whip. Vileplume walls defensive Torterra and can heal damage with Strength Sap, but it can be overwhelmed by Swords Dance Torterra.

* Unfortunately, Torterra's typing also leaves it with a 4x weakness to Ice, leaving it vulnerable to Ice-types like Sneasel and Vanilluxe.
* Additionally, Torterra's unimpressive Speed stat leaves it prone to being revenge killed by faster threats such as Incineroar, Braviary, Vivillon, and Magmortar.
These can be kinda merged; just simplify it and say that Torterra's Speed and numerous weaknesses leaves it vulnerable to many offensive Pokemon in the tier (list those that hit it super effectively/revenge kill it, etc.).

* Torterra is also very vulnerable to being burned or poisoned, as both statuses cut down on its longevity, while a burn also makes Torterra more passive by halving its Attack stat.
This applies to physical walls in general; point out more specific issues that Torterra faces, such as being a Grass-type that not only doesn't resist Scald, but also risks getting crippled by it.

* 248 HP and 136 Special Defense EVs let Torterra take two Hyper Voices from Life Orb Heliolisk. The remaining 124 Attack EVs alongside an Adamant nature let Torterra hit as hard as possible and 2HKO opposing Stealth Rock setters like Diancie, Rhydon, and Palossand.
* Leftovers give Torterra passive recovery and a source of healing other than Synthesis, meaning Torterra can preserve Synthesis's limited PP.
* Overgrow provides a boost to Wood Hammer's power when Torterra is below a third of its maximum health.
Mention that those HP and SpD EVs let Torterra take Heliolisk's attacks after Stealth Rock damage, and you can mention Choice Specs Whimsicott's Moonblasts here as well. I noticed in the Overview that you brought up Passimian as a Pokemon Torterra can check. In which case, why not invest in 68 Def EVs to survive 2 Close Combats from Scarf Passi after SR damage as well? The extra Attack EVs don't seem to hit any key KOes against the Stealth Rockers from what I can see, and the remaining 56 Atk EVs still allow Torterra to OHKO offensive Garbodor, so you might as well implement the new spread.

Usage Tips
========
* Be mindful of using Synthesis too frequently, as while it is Torterra's best form of recovery, it also has a low amount of PP.
You can also mention that Torterra needs to be wary of Vanilluxe switching in, as Snow Warning minimizes Synthesis's healing while Vanilluxe scares Torterra out to prevent further recovery.

* Wood Hammer is Torterra's strongest Grass STAB, hits opposing physical walls like Hariyama and Type: Null hard, and becomes a powerful Bloom Doom when used alongside a Grassium Z.
* Stone Edge rounds out Torterra's coverage by hitting Flying-types like Braviary, Xatu, and Vivillon super effectively, provides neutral coverage against Grass-types like Whimsicott and Dhelmise, and becomes Continental Crush when powered up by a Rockium Z.
* Rock Polish boosts Torterra's Speed by two stages letting it pose as both a wallbreaker and sweeper alongside Swords Dance.
* Synthesis lets Torterra make use of its useful resistances to Rock and Ground by providing it with a source of active recovery, but Torterra sorely misses the coverage provided by Stone Edge.
- Mention that Wood Hammer is Torterra's strongest attack in general, and you also need to emphasize the recoil it inflicts, which may shorten Torterra's sweep. For that matter, I'm not sure that Hariyama makes for a particularly good Wood Hammer targets, due to the former's high HP inflicting massive Wood Hammer recoil. You could emphasize Wood Hammer's power advantage over Earthquake, such as Wood Hammer always OHKOing offensive Diancie and +2 Wood Hammer always OHKOing Bulk Up Scrafty, or you could just list the things that Wood Hammer hits hard, like the bulky Waters and Grounds as well as Rotom.
- Dhelmise is hit plenty hard enough by +2 Bloom Doom, so remove it as a Stone Edge target. Golbat is much more fitting.

* Rockium Z turns Stone Edge into Continental Crush, notably OHKOing Dhelmise after a Swords Dance boost.
* Alternatively, Grassium Z can be used if forgoing Stone Edge to turn Wood Hammer into Bloom Doom to OHKO Bulk Up Scrafty and Miltank.
* Overgrow further boosts Torterra's Wood Hammer or Bloom Doom if Torterra is at less than a third of its maximum HP.
- Once again, OHKOing Dhelmise with +2 Continental Crush is not notable when +2 Bloom Doom can do so as well with minimal or no chip damage. You can mention that it does enable a crucially accurate Rock-type attack.
- Miltank isn't a great example due to the rising number of Sap Sipper variants. Instead, mention that Bloom Doom is capable of OHKOing Pyukumuku and defensive Slowbro as well as offer an extremely powerful Grass-type attack that doesn't inflict recoil, which is especially handy if Torterra is in Overgrow range.
In light of this, make Grassium Z the primary slash over Rockium Z; the power bonus and lack of recoil STAB seem much more appealing than simply making its coverage move accurate, since +2 Stone Edge/Earthquake/Bloom Doom are already quite sufficient for power the majority of the time.

Usage Tips
========
* It is best to save Torterra's Z-move for when it's usage is absolutely necessary, as Torterra struggles to break Guzzlord and Dhelmise without Continental Crush.
* If using a Grassium Z, using Bloom Doom on a Pokemon with a high Base HP, such as Hariyama or Vaporeon, is beneficial as to not take heavy recoil from Wood Hammer.
- Guzzlord drops to +2 Earthquake after Stealth Rock damage, and you don't need to specifiy Continental Crush when addressing Dhelmise.
- You can also mention that Bloom Doom can be saved until Torterra falls into Overgrow range, which can give it a final devastating boosted strike that won't knock Torterra out.
- At this point, Rockium Z might only be considered for the accurate Rock-type coverage that can help to secure the KO on the opponent's Flying-type, unless you can find other scenarios where Stone Edge or Bloom Doom won't be sufficient for damage.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
* Worry Seed can be used as a last resort check to Contrary Malamar, but has little use outside of that.
- This isn't really an effective solution since Torterra may struggle to sufficiently hurt or threaten a +1 Def Malamar, plus Vileplume does this sort of thing better anyway. Remove it.
- What Torterra can consider here is Roar, which phazes out setup sweepers such as Magnet Rise Klinklang, Decidueye, Braviary, Scrafty, etc. to prevent them from taking advantage of Torterra, as well as synergizing well with Stealth Rock to force out and pressure the Flying-types that wish to switch in on Torterra.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ice-types**: Sneasel and Vanilluxe both threaten to OHKO Torterra with Icicle Crash and Blizzard, respectively, but neither appreciate switching directly in. Cryogonal threatens to KO specially defensive Torterra with Freeze Dry after some chip damage and lives a Wood Hammer from it.

**Flying-types**: Braviary, Vivillon, and Scyther all come in easily on Torterra variants lacking Stone Edge and set up with Bulk Up, Quiver Dance, and Swords Dance. Xatu stops the specially defensive set from setting Stealth Rock with ease and can whittle it down with Night Shade. Sigilyph takes no damage from Stealth Rock, easily takes Torterra's STAB moves, and retaliates with Air Slash.

**Faster Threats**: Incineroar KOes specially defensive Torterra after one layer of Spikes with Flare Blitz. Decidueye takes any hit from either variant bar Stone Edge with ease and can use Torterra as setup fodder. Medicham has a favorable chance to KO Torterra after one layer of Spikes with High Jump Kick. Magnet Rise Klinklang uses either Torterra variant as setup fodder.

**Physically Defensive Pokemon**: Guzzlord can live any +2 move from Torterra and threaten an OHKO with Fire Blast. Dhelmise takes any hit other than a +2 Continental Crush and threatens heavy damage back with Anchor Shot. Vileplume lives +2 Earthquake, has a favorable chance to live a +2 Continental Crush from full, and can heal back the damage taken with Strength Sap.
- Piloswine and Alolan Sandslash can win one-on-one against defensive Torterra as well. For that matter, Torterra wants to be wary of any Ice-type attack (might want to rename this section), such as Ice Beam from Pokemon such as Samurott and Assault Vest Slowbro, as well as Hidden Power Ice from Choice Specs Sceptile. Ice Shard from Piloswine and Sneasel are also threats against Rock Polish variants of Torterra.
- Golbat is a solid response against Torterra that lacks Stone Edge, and even then it can smack Torterra with Brave Bird before it gets hit by +2 Stone Edge.
- Other Fire-types such as Delphox, Houndoom, and Magmortar should definitely be mentioned here, though obviously note their inability to switch into EQ or Stone Edge. Sceptile also does well against Torterra due to its resistances to Torterra's STABs, and either overpower it with Giga Drains or Leaf Storms or set up Swords Dance on it.
- Honestly, the "Physically Defensive Pokemon" is just so...incorrect. For starters, Guzzlord isn't really a physically defensive Pokemon, and it does risk dying to +2 EQ after just SR damage. Dhelmise also dies to +2 Bloom Doom and thus doesn't beat Torterra 1v1, much less on the switch. Torterra can simply boost to boost to +4 (+3 if Strength Sapped that turn), and demolish Plume without the need to use the Z-Move. If these Pokemon are all you have here, I'd just remove this section entirely and focus on expanding the other sections.

- add a small line on what sets Torterra apart from other SR Ground-types (you already have a line about its cons so add a positive line about it too). There is really little to no mention on Torterra being a Stealth Rock-user even though that's what it's used for most of the time; emphasize on that

[OVERVIEW]

The combination of Torterra's Grass / Ground typing, resistance to Ground-type moves, and solid defenses lets it reliably take on common Stealth Rock users such as Steelix, Diancie, and Rhydon with ease as well as prominent offensive threats such as Passimian, Heliolisk, and Whimsicott. Torterra's access to Synthesis sets it apart from most other Stealth Rock users, allowing it to be more self-sufficient by providing Torterra with a source of active reliable recovery. Torterra's high base Attack stat and access to strong STAB Grass- and Ground-type moves in Wood Hammer and Earthquake prevent it from being passive and letting Grass- and Ground-resistant Pokemon such as Decidueye, Braviary, and Sceptile easily switch in. Access to Swords Dance and Rock Polish combined with near perfect type coverage allows Torterra to become a threatening wallbreaker, easily dispatching common physical walls like Slowbro, Steelix, Diancie, and Garbodor. Unfortunately, the combination of Torterra's unimpressive Speed stat and weaknesses to prevalent typings leaves it easily revenge killed by Pokemon like Sneasel, Vanilluxe, Braviary, Vivillon, and Magmortar. Additionally, Torterra is not only a Grass-type that cannot reliably switch into Scald by virtue of its Ground typing, but it also risks being severely crippled by a potential burn or Toxic, making it a less effective check to common defensive Water-type Pokemon like Slowbro and Vaporeon.

Stealth Rock provides entry hazard support for Torterra's team and weakens its common Torterra switch-ins such as Braviary, Vileplume, and Vikavolt. STAB Wood Hammer is Torterra's Grass-type STAB move and lets it threatens opposing Water-types like Slowbro, Slowking, and Vaporeon. Earthquake prevents Fire-types such as Incineroar and Delphox from safely switching into Torterra while also hitting other Grass-resistant Pokemon such as Guzzlord, Garbodor, Ferroseed, and Druddigon. Synthesis gives Torterra a source of active reliable recovery and lets it recover health lost from switching into entry hazards and opposing Pokemon like Diancie, Passimian, and Heliolisk.

Overgrow gives Torterra a boost to Wood Hammer's power when Torterra is below a third of its maximum health.

Usage Tips
========

Torterra should aim to set Stealth Rock up as early as possible, as this limits the ability of its checks, such as Vanilluxe, Braviary, and Delphox, to switch in and punishes the opponent for switching in general. Due to Torterra's advantageous matchup against other Stealth Rock setters like Rhydon and Palossand, switch Torterra directly into them or on a predicted switch, as Torterra can threaten the foe out and set up Stealth Rock itself. Be mindful of using Synthesis too frequently, as while it is Torterra's best form of recovery, it also has a low amount of PP. Additionally, Torterra must care for Vanilluxe switching in on Synthesis, as it will reduce its effectiveness thanks to Vanilluxe's ability Snow Warning and force Torterra to switch out. Because Torterra has a solid Attack stat for a defensive Pokemon and a dual typing resisted only by Flying-,(AC) Bug-, and Grass-type Pokemon, throwing off a Wood Hammer or Earthquake to chip foes is relatively free of drawbacks. However, be careful as to not use Wood Hammer too frequently, as the recoil damage it causes will stack up over time,(AC) causing Torterra to use Synthesis more often than it would like to. While Torterra does have good special bulk, it must still be wary of strong neutral hits from Pokemon like Choice Specs Diancie, Guzzlord, and Sceptile.

Team Options
========

Because of Torterra's weaknesses to Ice and Fire, offensive Diancie is a great partner because it can switch into Fire- and Flying-type moves aimed at Torterra while also threatening out Ice-types with its Rock-type moves. In return, Torterra checks Ground-types such as Steelix, Rhydon, and Palossand for Diancie. Fire-types like Incineroar, Delphox, and Magmortar appreciate Torterra's ability to check Ground-type Pokemon and pressure Water-type Pokemon such as Slowbro, Vaporeon, and Samurott. Bulky Incineroar and Delphox work well defensively alongside Torterra, as Incineroar takes on Ice-types such as Sneasel, Vanilluxe, and Cryogonal, while Delphox provides Torterra with Wish support. Cleric support from Mega Audino and Vaporeon aides aids Torterra's vulnerability to status. Additionally, Mega Audino and Vaporeon also provide Wish support for Torterra,(AC) further bolstering its survivability. Entry hazard control from Pokemon like Xatu and Silvally-Steel helps to not only prevent Torterra from being down down by entry hazards,(RC) but also to block or remove Toxic Spikes from the field. Water-types such as Slowbro and Slowking appreciate Torterra checking Electric-types such as Heliolisk and Rotom for them. In return, Water-types can check Ice- and Fire-types such as Vanilluxe, Sneasel, Delphox, and Houndoom for Torterra. Garbodor can form an entry hazard setting core with Torterra, providing the team with Spikes and Toxic Spikes as well as a means of absorbing Toxic Spikes set by the opponent. In return,(AC) Torterra threatens opposing entry hazard setters such as Steelix and Rhydon,(AC) which would otherwise give Garbodor notable trouble.

Moves

Swords Dance raises Torterra's Attack by two stages, making it a fearsome wallbreaker. Wood Hammer is Torterra's strongest move, hits bulky Water-types like Slowbro and Slowking as well as Rotom for heavy damage, and becomes a powerful Bloom Doom when used alongside a Grassium Z. Earthquake provides coverage against most switch-ins to Wood Hammer, such as Incineroar, Steelix, Garbodor, and Silvally-Steel. Stone Edge rounds out Torterra's coverage by hitting Flying-types like Braviary, Xatu, Vivillon, and Golbat super effectively, provides neutral coverage against Grass-types like Whimsicott, and becomes Continental Crush when powered up by a Rockium Z. Rock Polish boosts Torterra's Speed by two stages, letting it pose as both a wallbreaker and cleaner when used in conjunction with Swords Dance. Synthesis lets Torterra make use of its useful resistances to Rock- and Ground-type moves by letting it recover health lost from switching into Pokemon like Steelix and Rhydon, but Torterra sorely misses the coverage provided by Stone Edge.

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack and Speed investment with a Jolly nature makes Torterra as fast as possible and as strong as possible. An Adamant nature can be used to OHKO Steelix with Earthquake after a Swords Dance boost and Stealth Rock damage,(RC) but is not ideal on Rock Polish variants, as Torterra is slower than both Choice Scarf Passimian and Braviary even after a Rock Polish boost. Grassium Z turns Wood Hammer into Bloom Doom, letting Torterra OHKO defensive Slowbro and Pyukumuku. Additionally, Bloom Doom does not cause recoil damage, and it can provide a strong nuke if Torterra is in Overgrow range. Alternatively, Rockium Z turns Stone Edge into Continental Crush and provides Torterra with a 100% accurate Rock-type move. Overgrow further boosts Torterra's Wood Hammer and Bloom Doom if Torterra is at less than a third of its maximum HP.

Usage Tips
========

Torterra should make use of its useful resistances to Ground and Rock to switch safely into Pokemon such as Steelix and Rhydon, set up Swords Dance, and attempt to wallbreak. While Torterra does threaten out Water-types like Slowbro, Slowking, and Vaporeon by virtue of its strong Grass-type STAB move in Wood Hammer, it must be wary when switching in, as a burn from Scald will cripple Torterra's ability to wallbreak. Torterra's Speed stat is middling even when invested in; thus, eliminating faster threats like Vanilluxe, Braviary, and Magmortar is helpful in letting Torterra wallbreak. Using Bloom Doom on a Pokemon with a high base HP stat, such as Hariyama and Vaporeon, is beneficial as to not take heavy recoil from Wood Hammer. If using Rockium Z, it is best to save Torterra's Z-Move for when it's its usage is absolutely necessary, as Torterra struggles to break Guzzlord without Continental Crush. Rock Polish is best saved for usage until the opposing team either has there are no Grass- or Flying-types left,(RC) or they are sufficiently weakened for Torterra to KO without a Swords Dance boost. If using Synthesis, use it to recover health lost to chip damage from entry hazards and damaging moves from opposing entry hazard setters like Diancie, Rhydon, and Palossand.

Team Options
========

Entry hazards work wonders alongside Torterra, as it makes wallbreaking easier. Notably, Stealth Rock allows Torterra to always OHKO Steelix with a Swords Dance-boosted Earthquake if using an Adamant nature. Diancie is a great partner for Torterra, taking on Fire- and Flying-type moves aimed at Torterra, threatening opposing Ice-types with its Rock-type moves, and also providing Heal Bell support. In return, Torterra abuses takes advantage of (banned term) Diancie drawing in Steelix and Rhydon by setting up on them while also taking little damage from their Ground-type moves. Garbodor can set up Spikes to help make breaking opposing physical walls like Guzzlord, Hariyama, and Vileplume less difficult. In return,(AC) Torterra punishes opposing Ground-types like Rhydon and Palossand that switch into Garbodor. Due to Torterra's below-(AH)average Speed, speed control from Choice Scarf users like Passimian, Rotom, and Heliolisk is appreciated. Passimian in particular is a great partner, as it baits in bulky Water-types, such as Slowbro and Vaporeon, that Torterra can use as setup fodder while also being able to safely bring Torterra in via U-turn. If not using Stone Edge, Torterra will struggle to easily dispatch Flying-types. Ice-, Electric-, and Rock-types like Vanilluxe, Heliolisk, and Rhydon all help to pressure opposing Flying-types.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Protect can be used instead of Synthesis to scout Choice item users like Passimian, Sneasel, and Aerodactyl while also giving Torterra free passive recovery from Leftovers, although having no active reliable recovery makes Torterra much easier to weaken. A specially defensive Cure set could be used to make use of Torterra's all-around solid bulk, but Torterra's weaknesses to common attacking types in Ice, Fire, and Flying makes this kind of set hard to pull off. Roar lets Torterra phaze out setup setup sweepers, such as Decidueye, Magnet Rise Klinklang, and Braviary, that may try to take advantage of its inability to threaten them significantly. Roar also synergizes well with Stealth Rock, letting Torterra rack up chip damage on Pokemon trying to switch into Torterra's Grass- and Ground-type moves like Whimsicott and Vivillon.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ice-type moves**: Sneasel and Vanilluxe both threaten to OHKO Torterra with Icicle Crash and Blizzard, respectively, but neither appreciate switching directly in. Ice Shard from Piloswine greatly threatens offensive Torterra variants. Alolan Sandslash outspeeds specially defensive Torterra and can KO it with Icicle Crash after minimal chip damage. Cryogonal threatens to KO specially defensive Torterra with Freeze Dry after some chip damage and lives survives a Wood Hammer from it. Ice Beam from the likes of Assault Vest Slowbro and specially offensive Samurott easily KOes Torterra, although neither Slowbro nor Samurott wants to directly switch in. Sceptile can switch in to into Torterra's STAB moves and threaten it with a Choice Specs-boosted Hidden Power Ice.

Golbat takes on any Torterra lacking Stone Edge with ease and can hit it hard with a Brave Bird.

**Fire-types**: Incineroar KOes specially defensive Torterra after one layer of Spikes with Flare Blitz. Magmortar, Delphox, and Houndoom all can easily dispatch Torterra with their strong Fire-type moves, but they cannot reliably switch in to into Torterra.

**Grass-types**: Decidueye can switch into any move other than Stone Edge from Torterra and set up Swords Dance. Sceptile takes little damage from Torterra's STAB moves and can retaliate with Hidden Power Ice. Dhelmise fears only a boosted Z-Move and threatens an OHKO with Choice Band-boosted Wood Hammer (shouldn't this be Power Whip, not Wood Hammer?). Vileplume walls specially defensive Torterra and can heal back damage with Strength Sap, but it can be overwhelmed by Swords Dance Torterra.

Btw, the Torterra spread isn't really focused on full SpD investment (especially when you pointed out a SpD Curse set in OO), so I would probably just rename the "Specially Defensive" set to just "Defensive". Replace all other mentions of specially defensive Torterra throughout your analysis accordingly, particularly in C&C.

While Torterra does have good special bulk, it must still be wary of strong neutral hits from Pokemon like Choice Specs Diancie, Guzzlord, and Sceptile.

Team Options
========

Because of Torterra's weaknesses to Ice and Fire, Offensive Diancie is a great Torterra partner because it can switch into Fire- and Flying-type moves aimed at Torterra while also threatening out Ice-types with its Rock-type moves. In return, Torterra checks Ground-types such as Steelix, Rhydon, and Palossand for Diancie. Fire-types like Incineroar, Delphox, and Magmortar appreciate Torterra's ability to check Ground-types Pokemon and pressure Water-types Pokemon such as Slowbro, Vaporeon, and Samurott. Additionally, Mega Audino and Vaporeon also provide Wish support for Torterra, further bolstering its survivability. Entry hazard control from Pokemon like Xatu and Silvally-Steel helps to not only prevent Torterra from being down down by entry hazards but also block or remove Toxic Spikes from the field. Water-types such as Slowbro and Slowking appreciate Torterra checking Electric-types such as Heliolisk and Rotom for them. In return, Water-types they can check Ice- and Fire-types such as Vanilluxe, Sneasel, Delphox, and Houndoom for Torterra. Garbodor can form an entry hazard-(hyph)setting core with Torterra, providing the team with Spikes and Toxic Spikes as well as a means of absorbing Toxic Spikes set by the opponent. In return, Torterra threatens opposing entry hazard setters such as Steelix and Rhydon, which would otherwise give Garbodor notable trouble.

Earthquake provides coverage against most switch-ins to Wood Hammer, such as including Incineroar, Steelix, Garbodor, and Silvally-Steel. Stone Edge rounds out Torterra's coverage by hitting hits Flying-types like Braviary, Xatu, Vivillon, and Golbat super effectively, provides neutral coverage against Grass-types like Whimsicott, and becomes Continental Crush when powered up by Rockium Z. Rock Polish boosts Torterra's Speed by two stages, letting it pose as both a wallbreaker and cleaner when used in conjunction with Swords Dance. Synthesis lets Torterra make use of its useful resistances to Rock- and Ground-type moves Rock and Ground by letting it recover health lost from switching into Pokemon like Steelix and Rhydon, but Torterra sorely misses the coverage provided by Stone Edge.

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack and Speed investment with a Jolly nature makes Torterra as fast and strong as possible. An Adamant nature can be used to OHKO Steelix with +2 Earthquake after a Swords Dance boost and Stealth Rock damage but is not ideal on Rock Polish variants, as +2 Torterra is then slower than both Choice Scarf Passimian and Braviary even after a Rock Polish boost.

Usage Tips
========

Torterra should make use of its useful resistances to Ground and Rock to switch safely into Pokemon such as Steelix and Rhydon, set up Swords Dance, and attempt to wallbreak. While Torterra does threaten out Water-types like Slowbro, Slowking, and Vaporeon by virtue of its strong Grass-type STAB move in Wood Hammer, it must be wary when switching in, as a burn from Scald will cripple mitigate Torterra's ability to wallbreak. Torterra's Speed stat is middling even when invested; thus, eliminating faster threats like Vanilluxe, Braviary, and Magmortar is helpful in letting Torterra wallbreak. Using Bloom Doom on a Pokemon with a high base HP stat, such as Hariyama and or Vaporeon, is beneficial as to not take heavy recoil from Wood Hammer.

========

Entry hazards work wonders alongside Torterra, as it they makes wallbreaking easier. Notably, Stealth Rock allows Torterra to always OHKO Steelix with a Swords Dance-boosted +2 Earthquake if using an Adamant nature. Diancie is a great partner for Torterra, taking on Fire- and Flying-type moves aimed at Torterra, threatening opposing Ice-types with its Rock-type moves, and also providing Heal Bell support. In return, Torterra takes advantage of Diancie drawing in Steelix and Rhydon by setting up on them while also taking little damage from their Ground-type moves. Garbodor can set up Spikes to help make breaking opposing physical walls like Guzzlord, Hariyama, and Vileplume less difficult. In return, Torterra punishes opposing Ground-types like Rhydon and Palossand that switch into Garbodor like Rhydon and Palossand. Due to Torterra's below-average Speed, speed control from Choice Scarf users like Passimian, Rotom, and Heliolisk is appreciated. Passimian in particular is a great partner, as it baits in bulky Water-types, (comma) such as Slowbro and Vaporeon, that Torterra can use as setup fodder like Slowbro and Vaporeon while also being able to safely bring Torterra in via U-turn. If not using Stone Edge, Torterra will struggle to easily dispatch Flying-types. Ice-, Electric-, and Rock-types like Vanilluxe, Heliolisk, and Rhydon all help to pressure opposing such Flying-types.

Roar lets Torterra phaze setup sweepers, (comma) such as Decidueye, Magnet Rise Klinklang, and Braviary, that which may try to take advantage of its inability to threaten them significantly. Roar also synergizes well with Stealth Rock, letting Torterra rack up chip damage on Pokemon trying to switch into Torterra's Grass- and Ground-type moves like Whimsicott and Vivillon.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ice-type moves**: Sneasel and Vanilluxe both threaten to OHKO Torterra with Icicle Crash and Blizzard, respectively, but neither appreciates switching directly in. Ice Shard from Piloswine greatly threatens offensive Torterra variants. Alolan Sandslash outspeeds defensive Torterra and can KO it with Icicle Crash after minimal chip damage. Cryogonal threatens to KO defensive Torterra with Freeze-(hyph)Dry after some chip damage and survives a Wood Hammer from it. Ice Beam from the likes of Assault Vest Slowbro and specially offensive Samurott easily KOes Torterra, although neither Slowbro nor Samurott wants to directly switch in. Sceptile can switch into Torterra's STAB moves and threaten it with a Choice Specs-boosted Hidden Power Ice.

**Flying-types**: Braviary, Vivillon, and Scyther all easily come in easily on Torterra variants lacking Stone Edge and set up with Bulk Up, Quiver Dance, and or Swords Dance. Xatu stops the defensive set from setting Stealth Rock with ease and can whittle it down with Night Shade. Sigilyph takes no damage from Stealth Rock, easily takes Torterra's STAB moves, and retaliates with Air Slash. Golbat takes on any Torterra lacking Stone Edge with ease and can hit it hard with a Brave Bird.

**Fire-types**: Incineroar KOes defensive Torterra after one layer of Spikes with Flare Blitz. Magmortar, Delphox, and Houndoom all can easily dispatch Torterra with their strong Fire-type moves, but they cannot reliably switch into Torterra.

**Grass-types**: Decidueye can switch into any move other than Stone Edge from Torterra and set up Swords Dance. Sceptile takes little damage from Torterra's STAB moves and can retaliate with Hidden Power Ice. Dhelmise fears only a boosted Z-Move and threatens an to OHKO with Choice Band-boosted Power Whip. Vileplume walls defensive Torterra and can heal back damage with Strength Sap, but it can be overwhelmed by Swords Dance Torterra.

[OVERVIEW]

The Torterra's combination of Torterra's Grass / Ground typing, resistance to Ground-type moves, and solid defenses lets it reliably take on common Stealth Rock users such as Steelix, Diancie, and Rhydon with ease as well as prominent offensive threats such as Passimian, Heliolisk, and Whimsicott. Torterra's access to Synthesis sets it apart from most other Stealth Rock users, (comma) allowing by making it to be more self-sufficient, (comma) and its by providing Torterra with a source of reliable recovery. Access to Swords Dance and Rock Polish combined with near perfect type coverage allows Torterra to become a threatening wallbreaker as well, easily dispatching common physical walls like Slowbro, Steelix, Diancie, and Garbodor. Unfortunately, the combination of Torterra's unimpressive Speed stat and weaknesses to prevalent typings leaves it easily revenge killed by common Pokemon like Sneasel, Vanilluxe, Braviary, Vivillon, and Magmortar. Additionally, Torterra is not only a Grass-type that cannot reliably switch into Scald by virtue of its Ground typing, but it also risks being one that is severely crippled by a potential burn or Toxic, making it a less effective check to common defensive Water-type Pokemon like Slowbro and Vaporeon.

Stealth Rock provides entry hazard support for Torterra's team and weakens its common switch-ins such as Braviary, Vileplume, and Vikavolt. STAB Wood Hammer threatens opposing Water-types like Slowbro, Slowking, and Vaporeon. Earthquake prevents Fire-types such as Incineroar and Delphox from safely switching into Torterra while also hitting other Grass-resistant Pokemon such as Guzzlord, Garbodor, Ferroseed, and Druddigon. Synthesis gives Torterra a source of reliable recovery, (comma) restoring and lets it recover health lost from switching into entry hazards and opposing Pokemon like Diancie, Passimian, and Heliolisk.

248 HP EVs and 136 Special Defense EVs let Torterra take two uses of Hyper Voices from Life Orb Heliolisk after Stealth Rock damage as well as two uses of Moonblasts from Choice Specs Whimsicott. 68 Defense EVs allow Torterra to take two Close Combats from Choice Scarf Passimian twice after Stealth Rock damage. The remaining 56 Attack EVs alongside an Adamant nature let Torterra hit as hard as possible and 2HKO opposing Stealth Rock setters like Diancie, Rhydon, and Palossand as well as OHKO offensive Garbodor with Earthquake. Leftovers provides Torterra with passive recovery and a source of healing other than Synthesis, letting Torterra preserve Synthesis's limited PP. Overgrow gives Torterra a boost to Wood Hammer's power when Torterra is below a third of its maximum health.

Usage Tips
========

Torterra should aim to set Stealth Rock up as early as possible, as this limits the ability of its checks, such as Vanilluxe, Braviary, and Delphox, to switch in and punishes the opponent for switching in general. Due to Torterra's advantageous matchup against other Stealth Rock setters like Rhydon and Palossand, switch Torterra directly into them or on a predicted switch, as Torterra can threaten them foe out and set up Stealth Rock itself. Be mindful of using Synthesis too frequently, as while it is Torterra's best form of recovery, it also has a low amount of PP. Additionally, Torterra must care watch out for Vanilluxe switching in on Synthesis, as it hail will reduce its Synthesis's effectiveness thanks to Vanilluxe's ability Snow Warning and Vanilluxe will force Torterra to switch out. Because Torterra has a solid Attack stat for a defensive Pokemon and a dual typing resisted only by Flying-, Bug-, and Grass-type Pokemon Flying, Grass, and Bug, throwing off an attack Wood Hammer or Earthquake to chip foes is relatively free of drawbacks.
