TPCI Announces Pokemon Leagues to have prize support for Video game players!

According to the Go-Pokemon Web site, local leagues will now be giving some support for the video game players.

Each season, players will have a chance to earn two different promotional cards. The cards will be printed in a new foil pattern never before used on any other Pokémon card, and not only do they look amazing, but they are also cards that competitive players will be happy to include in their favorite decks! For example, Rival season will offer players a chance to earn Snorlax and Uxie—both of which are popular and instantly recognizable!

In addition to the promo cards, players who play in multiple league seasons and meet certain goals will also have the opportunity to earn unique league-themed Nintendo DS™ skins! These DS skins are available exclusively through league participation and will be rewarded every other season.

Remember, that leagues are at a local level and instead of being competitive it is to teach others and help grow the game. It is not much, but it is free. So if any of you are wanting to teach some local people how to play some pokemon, earn some free stuff, and grow the game everybody should consider to attend one of these.


And if you do not have a league in your local area, do not be shy and start one!

All this is free so if you want to grow the game in your area, meet some new friends, and get some free stuff you should do your part to grow the game and attend a local league starting on September 21st!


How about everybody here? Thoughts on this? Happy that the video game player is getting some love? Thinking about Starting one in your local area?

If you notice, there is a separate score sheet for video game battles. At least this will almost guarantee that there will be people to play against.

Maybe I'm completely missing it, but I can't find it anywhere that the leagues actually support the video games. They seem to only be giving away ds skins to tcg players, but not actually holding anything video game related. Even though the prizes seem pretty lousy, I do hope I'm wrong though since it could be used as an excuse to meet up with some fellow Jersey players.
 
So...the VGC support is just a special DSi skin for the TCG players? I don't know anything about the TCG?! 0_o

Plus I already have my Worlds 09 skin.

Basically, you get one stamp for each match you play (just like the TCG). If you get a certain amount of stamps in either the TCG or the VG, you can get prizes such as promo cards and Nintendo DS skins.
 
Damn, i hope they dont make it so you HAVE to attend leagues.... if theres none near me(and i cant host my own) im screwed :(
 
Hmm, so we can travel to what are basically 'TCG meets', but play battles on the video games and earn stamps to get prizes, win or lose? There would also be set tournaments at some of these meets which are more rewarding in the terms of prizes they give...

I'm guessing the tournaments throughout the year may lead to some kind of ranking system that'll go towards the big VGC tournaments.. We'll have to wait and see. It's quite promising, although it depends on the locations, as usual.
 
Did a little more skimming and it looks like you can show up to any of these "TCG league plays" with your DS and ask people to battle and win or lose you get points that can be cashed in for prizes. It also said that since VG matches are so much quicker than TCG matches, it will take more battles to accrue points for prizes, but it also said you can be denied points for "gaming the system".

I think I might check in at my local league and ask about this cuz there are tons of morons on ebay just dying for useless poke-crap like that competitor pack I got from worlds.

Just checked and my local Gameshop has official league play every Monday night, so I'm gonna ask and check it out.
 
Currently you can only search for local leagues in the US and Canada.. so us UK players will have to wait a bit before we can get some information it seems.

I'll probably look into starting a league in Manchester, if I can find a venue that would allow it and is cheap / free. Obviously I'll have to make sure I understand all the TCG stuff first...

They clearly don't understand their own game. I play both(TCG and VG) and in the current state of the TCG metagame battles take ~10 minutes, sometimes even like 5. Whenever I play the VG matches take atleast 15-30 minutes.

They're taking the examples from the official tournaments. Because VGC play takes ~10 minutes, they're assuming all VG matches take ~10 minutes. Same for the TCG - Competitive TCG takes around 15 or more minutes for a game (assuming both players get a good amount of basics in the beginning). I play TCG for fun with my friends, and it usually takes me a minute for me to do one ply (a single player's individual turn). So if people are playing 6v6 Singles - congratulations, you're just wasting your time.
 
So me, as a TCG League Leader, am NOT happy with this at all. Why? Because now I'm gonna get a bucketload of EXTRA kids to watch out for and keep track of. Just peachy.

^I know, which is unfortunate because more people play 6v6 singles than 4v4 doubles, official or not.

To be precise, we (the 6v6 players) are the minority. When it comes down to the local level, most kids play Lv 100 No restrictions 6v6 doubles. That means that you'll have to face kids using ubers...
 
I'd be highly interested in participating in the league as a video game competitor, as the closest one to my location is about 25 miles away from here (albeit the problem will be the time, which is 6-8 PM on Mondays). Regardless, this looks to be promising. Can't wait for more information!

No, I really don't think so. All of my friends little brothers play singles, and I can't help but think that little kids are accustomed to it because 90% of the battles in game are singles.
 
I was at first really excited to see this, until I realized it was just 'street pokemon', with whatever you and the others decide to do; you could use a lv. 78 Gyarados if you wanted or Little Cup. I was hoping for more VGC love, but I realize that Pokemon USA is not 'mature' enough in their VGC lifespan to have local leagues with points and worlds qualification and the whole nine yards, like what the TCG has. Maybe in a few years though!


@ mosquito = with the minority issue, it's so subjective to the local population, that it's pretty hard to say that 6v6 players are a minority IMO. In my area most people just play singles and 6v6, so I don't think they are a minority (in fact they are an overwhelming majority). One thing that is 99% for sure though is that competitive internet players are a minority when compared to all those who battle with pokemon.

League actually doesn't alter your premiere rating(which is required to enter some premiere events like states, nationals, or worlds). I don't think we will ever see league affect it in either the VG or TCG. Sucks though, because it is quite fun.
 
Yeah, these leagues are just too far for me to go to for almost nothing in it for me. Not to mention it is just Street Pokemon and I'm sure there is going to be some jokers going in with maxed out stats, illegal movesets, etc. Not worth the trouble for me or anyone to be honest.
 
If the VG events were properly organised by PCI, it would be so much better, but I doubt they would waste their time and effort on something which can just be done by fans organising local events, Hacks would be annoying too, since there wouldn't be any hack checking equipment, unless people used PBR to battle, which should filter out obvious hacks.

All very true, but maybe we will see VG battle roads, cities, states and the like in the near future. That would advance the state of the game dramatically and possibly improve the league play as well. More exposure to the TCG players would be great.
 
so ultimadra would it be similar to modified/unlimited where the league leader could specify rules to be played under?

The league owners generally just have open gaming. You know, a place to hang out and play some pokemon. If you want to have a tournament for the video game or have some special rules, you could ask the league owner and they will generally fulfill the requests.

And, if YOU apply to run a league for yourself you can set dates and rules for whatever you want.
 
I talked to my local game shop that has pokemon 2 nights a week and like 50 TCG players and he was just like..."Uh...well...I never read that..." T_T
