SM Doubles OU Trapping Fun Mk2

Mack Knife

Future 50th President

Introduction

Hi guys, um... for a while I have been using a version of Nido's Gothiette Scizor team which featured a dual screens koko to help me bulk up and trap things with Gothiette. I wanted to see what it would look like if I used ninetails veil instead. Thus I made this team. I thought I should post it on RMT because I haven't made an original team since I have really learned competitive pokes and I want to see how I did.
Below is an importable for the team that inspired my team (It is pretty interesting in its own right imo and probably better than my new team).

The Team

... (Ninetales-Alola) @ Light Clay
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Freeze-Dry / Blizzard
- Moonblast
- Aurora Veil
- Protect
I began with Ninetails veil. There is not much to say about this pokemon. It sets up veil. I also love hail's ability to break sash's. Honestly i'm not too happy with it. I wish I could find some better ev spreads for it or just a cooler set in general that works. A good note is that freeze dry is our only way of hitting water types super-effectively on the whole team. Against anything bar a full room team, opposing weather, or a megagross team with fake out I would say this ninetails is a solid lead with incineroar.

! (Gothitelle) (F) @ Wiki Berry
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 252 HP / 32 Def / 216 SpD / 8 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Heal Pulse
- Helping Hand
- Trick Room
- Recycle
I wanted to trap people into bad situations after getting some bulk (the whole purpose of this team) so I needed Goth. Goth's role is to come in and stay in with either fini, zygarde, or genesect. I like to run recycle which is weird, but it really helps prolonging trapped situations. I have run other spreads before but this one seems to do the trick. Heal pulse and trick room help put us in good situations and due to shadow tag we tend to stay there. Helping hand helps secure ko's. Before I ran psyshock over helping hand and I regret ever thinking of that. A note is that Goth lacks protect and is stopped short by taunt. I have always been able to play around this tho.

.... (Incineroar) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 240 HP / 88 Atk / 148 Def / 32 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- Flare Blitz/ Low kick
- Knock Off
- U-turn
Now that intimidate is free, incineroar is a badass. Incineroar's main role is to lower use fake out and intimidate really to help us get up veil and just annoy the other team all game. Flare blitz and knock off are arguably his best stabs although I have used low kick in the past because I find a lot of sand teams from 1300-1500 on the ladder (but then your better off just using scrafty). A good move I like to pull is (and what the team is built to do): fake out + set up veil turn 1, send in goth + u-turn turn 2. This lets us trap far more efficiently in the case of switches. Trapping physical attackers and lowering their attack while laughing maniacally is one of my favorite past times.

..... (Tapu Fini) @ Mago Berry
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 252 HP / 72 Def / 112 SpA / 72 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Muddy Water/ Hydro pump/ Scald
- Moonblast
- Protect
The next three pokemon are our damage dealers. They all have great typings and can destroy certain teams. Fini (idk why the sprite wont work) is the glue of this team. It is our primary rain counter and helps reset terrain into something I like. Plus one moonblasts are nothing to scoff at.

,,, (Zygarde) @ Groundium Z
Ability: Aura Break
EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Thousand Arrows
- Extreme Speed
- Dragon Dance
- Protect
Looking at the current team before Zygarde we have 1 real attacker in fini which cant beat electric and bulky steel types. Zygarde comes in and helps us on this front. Remember if we get a chance to trap and dd a few times its gg. Groundium z helps bypass wide guards one time. Extreme speed has come in clutch a few times picking off weakened foes.

? (Genesect) @ Expert Belt/Assault vest
Ability: Download
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flash Cannon
- Flamethrower/thunderbolt
- Blizzard/ Ice beam
- Protect / U-turn
At this point I was still losing to bulu and had no way of hitting a few guys hard enough. That is where genesect comes in. He also fits in on the mantra of the team as in there are situations where I can trap opponents who can not do anything to genesect because of his typing. I originally ran an assault vest variant (which I hope more people run in the future because it is very strong right now), but I was missing knock outs in some situations. Sometimes Genesect can cut through teams like butter and other times I just use him as fodder.

Conclusion

Yeah, this is my first time doing a rmt and my first original team since forever. I'm not going to lie I am not happy with a few things about the team such as: my genesect and ninetails ev spreads are boring, zygarde and genesect both have crippling weaknesses which can lead to situations where I cant use them to check something I want to check, I have a just terrible match up against opposing incineroar. Please do not be afraid to tell me if i did anything wrong in the rmt or if my team is absolute garbage. One of my most annoying traits is that i love criticism because it makes me learn how to improve.

Hi Mack Knife, it's me, guy who popularised Gothitelle in DOU, here to rate your Gothitelle team :0 ha

I'll start by saying that I don't think Gothitelle is the right choice for this team. I think Gothitelle is great when its partner is able to boost really quickly and has a lot of great defensive matchups, for example in the cases of Snorlax (the former) and Mega Scizor (the latter). Zygarde and Tapu Fini don't really have all that many Pokemon which they can set up on quickly; every single Tapu, for example, at least checks Zygarde, while Tapu Fini is threatened by a number of common Pokemon like Tapu Koko and Mega Gengar.

Therefore, I'd like to suggest using Mega Gengar > Gothitelle. Mega Gengar offers a stronger offensive presence for this team, which is often a more effective way to cover your own weaknesses than by trying to passively play around them with Gothitelle. Here's some other stuff it does:
  • can still trap passive stuff for you to set up on
  • uses Sludge Bomb to smack Tapus, especially Koko and Bulu which both threaten Fini and Zygarde
  • uses Disable is an option to ease setup
  • can also use Hidden Power Ice instead to snipe Landorus-T and Salamence so Zygarde has a better time sweeping in the late game
Additionally, I think Genesect should try to use a Choice Scarf set. Trapping teams generally appreciate a fast offensive pivot, giving you a slot to efficiently switch in and out to quickly get the appropriate Pokemon on the field. With a more offensive set, Genesect also:
  • has a fast STAB Iron Head to chunk Kyurem-B, which is a big threat to Zygarde (and Fini, with Fusion Bolt)
  • has a fast Ice Beam to snipe Landorus-T and Salamence, as above
  • brings up the overall speed of your team
Finally, here's a better EV spread for Ninetales. It doesn't often use its Special Attack, so I think it's more relevant to have a strong defensive spread. Using a spread of EVs: 68 HP / 188 Def / 252 Spe with a Timid Nature gives you a 1/16 chance to survive a 252 Atk Mega Salamence Double-Edge, which is about as strong as it gets (and also makes sure you don't lose to most Mega Salamence, which is kind of embarrassing for an Ice-type).

Summary:
  • Gothitelle -> Mega Gengar
  • Genesect -> Choice Scarf Genesect
  • Ninetales-A -> bulky Ninetales-A
Hope I helped. Good luck with the team!
