[OVERVIEW]
Tropius attempts to stall opposing Pokemon with Substitute and Leech Seed. However, Tropius faces a lot of competition from Tangela as a defensive Grass-type, as Tangela is much more bulkier thanks to Eviolite, gets more reliable recovery in Regenerator, and possesses a nice matchup against physically offensive Pokemon in the tier such as Stoutland and Lycanroc. Tropius struggles against the latter especially due to its Grass / Flying typing, which gives it a Stealth Rock weakness which heavily reduces its longevity. Low Speed hinders Tropius as well and makes even harder to set up Substitute since offensive Pokemon like Lycanroc and Aurorus are able to outspeed it and force it out.
[SET]
name: SubSeed
move 1: Leech Seed
move 2: Substitute
move 3: Air Slash
move 4: Protect / Toxic
item: Sitrus Berry
ability: Harvest
nature: Bold
evs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
[SET COMMENTS]
SubSeed Tropius wears down opposing Pokemon and attempts to cause switches, since Leech Seed and Sitrus Berry recovery under Substitute allows Tropius to recover back damage that it has taken as an attempt to stall the opposing Pokemon. Unfortunately, this set is very hard to actually pull off since Tropius is very slow, and a lot of offensive Pokemon like the aforementioned Lycanroc can easily force it out, making sure that Tropius can never actually set up Substitute. It is recommended to use Tangela as a defensive Grass-type because Tangela isn't as easily forced out as Tropius since Tangela's colossal physical bulk allows it to tank a number of hits compared to Tropius. Furthermore, Tangela is able to run Knock Off and Sleep Powder to cripple opposing Pokemon, providing significantly more defensive utility than Tropius.
