Tyranitar's special bulk under sand and typing allows it to function as a check to many special attackers in OU. Sand Stream enables Tyranitar to get a SpDef boost underneath sand letting it better check pokemon such as Volcarona, Rotom-H, and Kyurem. Stealth Rock gives Tyranitar further utility, helping to support it's team. Superpower allows Tyranitar to hit pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Hydreigon super effectively, along with OHKOing Bisharp and Crawdaunt, and severly damaging Urshifu if they try to switch in. Rock Blast is used over Stone Edge thanks to it's ability to hit multiple times letting it beat Substitute Kyurem, which would otherwise be able to stall out Stone Edge. Thunder Wave is used as a good utility move with the ability to cripple potential Tyranitar switch-ins such as Clefable, Urshifu, and Rillaboom. Toxic is also an option to hit bulkier pivots such as Tangrowth, Kommo-o, and Hippowdon.

Tyranitar works best on balance oriented teams that are able to handle pokemon such as Clefable and Urshifu that Tyranitar invites in. Take care not to switch in Tyranitar against potential Fighting-type coverage moves such as Focus Blast Kyurem or Gengar and Drain Punch Toxtricity. Toxapex can be used to scout for coverage moves, while also checking the Water- and Fighting-types that Tyranitar is weak to. Toxapex is also able to use Toxic Spikes or Toxic, which in combination with sand chip can wear the opposing team down. Sand Rush Excadrill is one of the best partners for Tyranitar thanks to Tyranitar's ability to set sand up for Excadrill and Toxic Tyranitar being able to lure in and cripple common Excadrill checks such as Kommo-o and Hippowdon. Magnezone is able to trap Steel-types such as Skarmory and Corviknight that aren't threatened by Tyranitar. Due to Tyranitar's lack of recovery moves, Wish users such as Clefable and Blissey are helpful thanks to their ability to keep Tyranitar continuously healthy throughout a game.

I'm not sure about including Psychic types since Psyshock Hat can lose to Hawlucha if it comes in on a Swords Dance and Urshifu being the most popular fighting type strongly deters Psychics from switching in. I think Poison types such as Toxapex and Amoonguss are much safer since they also have access to regenerator while also resisting fighting types making them better switch-ins to scout for coverage moves such as FB on Gengar
