i was testing some teams on the ladder when i had an encounter with V97. We both knew our teams could be better, so we tried to build a team, together. We were testing it, and it was pretty good, but once again, it could be better. With those fixed, we're now testing this version of the team.
The Team
The Lead
Deoxys-f @ Focus Sash
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 Atk/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Naive nature (+Spd, -SDef)
- Extremespeed
- Shadow Ball
- Mirror Coat
- Spikes
Deoxys is our trusty lead. The choice of Attack Form over Speed was a hard one, but eventually we decided that the attack power could be useful late-game, should Deoxys survive. Deoxys will also, short of a confrontation with a Deoxys S, be almost guaranteed to set up a couple layers of spikes. Shadow ball is for opposing Deoxys A, in the hopes of winning the speed tie. Likewise, we chose naive nature. Extreme Speed is to finish off sashed leads if they're at 1 health, but can also be a winning factor if it can survive to late game, where it can pick off the opponent's many weakened pokemon. Mirror coat is there for the sole purpose of Kyogre leads, who try to start an early sweep with water spout, or a calm mind set.
The AntiSpinner
Giratina-o @ Platinum Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 196 Spd/196 SAtk/116 SDef
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Dragon Pulse
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
Giratina O, at first glance, seems out of place on a team like this. However, its bulk and typing give us a few welcome aspects to the team that would be sorely missed if Giratina were replaced.
Most importantly, Giratina O keeps Scarf Palkia from ripping through the entirety of this team, barring Jirachi. The given EVs allow it to survive one Spacial Rend, and KO back with Dragon pulse. It's ghost typing also gives us a handy rapid spin blocker, who can use Hidden Power Fire to OHKO Forretress. The Rest and Sleep Talk combo gives it some survivability, because despite its many immunities, its weaknesses to ice and dragon are common in ubers. However, Sleep Talk gives a reliable absorber of Darkrai's Dark Void, which would be deadly to this team, especially if we're running the Version that doesn't have Palkia.
The Physical Sweeper
Rayquaza @ Life Orb
Ability: Air Lock
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Jolly nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Dragon Dance
- Outrage
- Overheat
- Earthquake
Rayquaza is the center of this team, and his late-game sweep is the ultimate goal that the other 5 pokemon strive to make possible. It's a classic DD Mence, with a rather mundane set of EVs. Nevertheless, they're probably the best options he has. The Life Orb is to grab some important KOs, namely Lugia after a Dragon Dance, as well as Kyogre. We were both considering other items, most prominently Leftovers and a Haban Berry.
Almost immediately, we decided leftovers wasn't fit for such a frail sweeper. The Haban Berry was appealing in that it seemed like it would be a safety net against being revenged killed by Scarf Palkia. Some calculations revealed, though, that with the Haban Berry Palkia was still guaranteed a KO, assuming Stealth Rocks. With Life Orb decided on, we knew that Overheat would have enough power without an EV investment, which ultimately lead to the standard 252/252 EV spread.
Outrage was chosen over Dragon Claw for the raw power, and is complimented well by Earthquake. Overheat is really only there for Skarmory, who will laugh at Outrage and would whirlwind with imputiny. All other steels are dealt with by Earthquake.
The Steel Type/Special Wall
Jirachi @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP/4 Spd/252 SDef
Careful nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Wish
- Protect
- Toxic
Our answer to Dragon or Ice type attacks, Jirachi is there to set up Rocks, which can help our Groudon or Rayquaza sweeps. The given EV`s are due to the Specially based Metagame. The nature is also Specially Defensive to further take advantage of most Ubers' rather lacking attack stat. Wish is there as a Recovery move and to give Wobbuffet some health back, Protect is there to get a free Wish, and the Leftovers recovery, and this way we can Toxicstall.
Physical Attacker/Thunder Absorber
Groudon @ Life Orb
Ability: Drought
EVs: 120 HP/252 Atk/136 Spd
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Rock Polish
- Stone Edge
- Dragon Claw
Groudon is our second sweeper, usually coming out on a thunder or thunder wave from a kyogre or support pokemon respectively. Hopefully, its presence alone will be enough to force a switch, ideally because the said Kyogre was scarfed. It rock polishes on the sweep, then wreaks havoc with the exceptional type coverage provided by its 3 moves. Earthquake is its STAB move, while Stone Edge is for Lugia and Skymin who resist EQ. Dragon Claw is mainly for Rayquaza so that the shaky accuracy of Stone Edge won't have to be relied on excessively. However, it's still usefull against the likes of Palkia and Giratina. Groudon usually comes early to mid-game, breaking it wide open for a Rayquaza sweep. Even if the sweep fails, Groudon has still set up sunlight, allowing Giratina's HP fire and Palkia's Flamethrower grab some important KOs.
Scarf-Killer/Set-up Prepare
Wobbuffet (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 28 HP/228 Def/252 SDef
Calm nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Counter
- Mirror Coat
- Encore
- Safeguard
Wobbuffet is key to this teams success. Wobbuffet has several jobs that no other Pokemon could possibly do. Wobbuffet can often set up Rayquaza, by Encoring Ground type moves. Wobbuffet will also kill Scarfed Pokemon, especially Palkia, and after they are dead Rayquaza won`t be stopped. Additionally, Wobbuffet and Jirachi can kill Lugia together, Jirachi can use Toxic and Wobbuffet can Encore the Attack (hopefully Roost) Setting up my Sweepers isn`t hard with Wobb. We choose Calm over Bold because It`s Job is to kill Scarfed Pokemon, and because of the Specially based Metagame nowadays.
The Possible Member
Palkia @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Draco Meteor
- Spacial Rend
- Thunder
- Flamethrower
Palkia would be the revenge killer of this team, and our check for Dragon Dancing Rayquaza. Spacial Rend is a reliable STAB move, while fireblast gives type coverage and takes advantage of the sun provided by Groudon. Thunder is mostly for Kyogre, and Draco Meteor is pretty much a filler, although sometimes it makes good use of a hit-and-run strategy.
Credits go to V97 and me.
I will post a Threat list tomorrow.
