Ubers Ubers: Calm Mind Mega Mewtwo Y [QC and GP 1/1]

Mewtwo @ Mewtwonite Y
Ability: Unnerve
EVs: 40 Def / 216 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psystrike
- Ice Beam
- Fire Blast
- Calm Mind

Mega Mewtwo Y has become a good anti-metagame pick thanks to its great offensive stats, wide coverage, and access to STAB Psystrike. These factors make it a decent revenge killer and wallbreaker in the Ubers metagame. Mewtwo has plenty of opportunities to come in on a double switch or via a free switch from a pivoting teammate, allowing it to set up Calm Mind to boost its offensive capabilities. Its EV investment allows it to outspeed Mega Gengar and +1 Zygarde-C and survive Marshadow’s Life Orb-boosted Shadow Sneak before Mega Evolving. Its coverage from Psystrike, Fire Blast, and Ice Beam allows it to threaten standard metagame options such as Mega Gengar, Necrozma-DM, and Zygarde-C. However, its complete lack of defensive utility makes it hard for it to switch in, so bulkier Pokemon such as Primal Groudon make for great partners; Primal Groudon is also a great partner do to its ability to can also check Necrozma-DM better than Mewtwo can. Its high offensive stats and Psychic typing also make it a good candidate for Psychic Terrain teams, which appreciate its Fire-type coverage.

Explaining that the 40 Defense EVs are for Mewtwo to survive LO Marshadow Shadow Sneak is important. It's also worth mentioning that the maximum Speed beats +1 Zygarde-C along with Mega Gengar and everything slower. Ice Beam has a variety of targets and Fire Blast is for Necrozma-DM + niche steels.

Language of this spotlights makes this Pokemon sound better than it is, because it's actually not super great in USM due to its lack of defensive utility. It's generally less potent than offensive Psychics like Ultra Necrozma and also has to compete with Pokemon like Lunala or Deoxys-A for a purely offensive team slot. Running this Pokemon basically means either you're either a Psychic Terrain team, or you're running an offense that has a lot of beatstick role compressors that give you just enough wiggle room to sort of get away with using this Pokemon aka team members have to consolidate a lot of necessary utility because this is such a do-nothing Pokemon from a defensive perspective. It also doesn't help that basically all teams have built-in good checks to this Pokemon with the likes of Necrozma-DM, Yveltal, and Primal Groudon. Against opposing offense you either have to threaten RK or get a smart double to get this Pokemon into play, and then you're often forced to pick between pulling the trigger to punish or predicting the Psychic resist switch-in.

I'd like to add to the above that MMY's role in the meta is a bit of an anti-meta mon. Its a decent revenge killer due its Speed but also has wallbreaking power. Common teams using Gengar + Zygarde or using Ultra Necrozma (and therefore a second Steel type) can find themselves pretty weak to it, which is the reason for its current spike in usage.

Implemented the defensive and speed benchmark descriptions and overall reformatted the spotlight to represent its place in the metagame better. Thanks for your patience.

This is kinda like a usage tip, its showing how to get into how to get this pokemon in, in order for it to wallbreak effectively, which leads into partners and stuff. Everything else is implemented.

Thanks. Let's try this to clean up the prose:
Mewtwo has plenty of opportunities to come in on a double switch or via a free switch from a pivoting teammate, allowing it to set up Calm Mind to boost its offensive capabilities.

If you have any objections, please let me know. Otherwise, this is GP 1/1
