Slowbro is a counter to this set because it can shrug off any hit even with CB attached and recover off the hits while also being able to Teleport out into breakers that can offensively pressure it. It's still a Slowbro tho and if you get tricked it's useless but still should be able to take on Calyrex-Ice when tricked to an extent so it's a decent enough counter.

Reserving Calyrex-Ice and Suicune Edit: yeah Ropalme is right, not fair to take two mons, might as well leave it open if I can't do the ice horse.

Ironically enough, one of the best counters to Calyrex-Ice is your own Calyrex-Ice! Thanks to a neat Ice resistance and a Ground neutrality combined with great bulk, it's impossible for a Banded Calyrex-Ice to beat a Sub ID one.

252+ Atk Choice Band Calyrex-Ice Glacial Lance vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Calyrex-Ice: 146-172 (36.1 - 42.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

42.5 + 21.5 + 14.3 x 2 = 92.6, which means it will never KO from full.

+4 4 Def Calyrex-Ice Body Press vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Calyrex-Ice: 173-204 (50.7 - 59.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
50.7 x 2 = 101.4, always enough for the 2HKO.

It also does not care about Trick, as this makes the originally Banded Calyrex-Ice much more manageable.

Fun fact: Glacial Lance is actually the strongest move to click when facing Pokemon with an Ice resist and a Ground neutrality, like bulky Waters.

A bit more of an unconventional pick, Suicune takes advantage of the fact Glacial Lance has extremely low PP with Pressure and its pure Water typing, turning Calyrex-Ice into a useless mon at best or setup fodder at worst. It can also fish for Burns with Scald, allowing it to stall out Calyrex-Ice even better.

252+ Atk Choice Band Calyrex-Ice Glacial Lance vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Suicune: 136-161 (33.6 - 39.8%) -- 27.5% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
39.8 x 2 -12.5 = 67.1, never enough for a 2HKO while it gets PP stalled and burned.

Not sure if this is allowed, but it seems kinda unfair to take two Pokémon tbh

Well, since this Pokémon already barely has answers and Avalugg was taken literally while I was writing this, guess I'll go with an offensive answer

Yveltal @ Choice Band
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Foul Play

Surprisingly, this thing can actually switch into 3/4 of Calyrex's moves as it doesn't care about Aromatherapy/High Horsepower/Trick and not many things can actually OHKO Caly with its dummy bulk, with Knock Off being hard to switch into for the tier in general. U-turn is not a bad option either for gaining momentum, as you force Caly to click Glacial Lance over High Horsepower and you still do respectable damage.

(Or anything fast with Substitute...) We can take advantage of the fact that Glacial Lance has only 4 PP under Pressure and use Sub to either stall Glacial Lance out, or go into a Flying type on the banded High Horsepower. This is the Big Slugga Balance Eternatus set (https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/submissions-closed-ss-sample-teams-dlc2.3675564/post-8803265); clearly you could modify this for Calyrex-Ice but that's weird and unviable.

Quite a bugging Unconventional pick to give any noticeable first impressions on

The spread given allows the crustacean to switch-In at least once and 2HKO with first impression (the 2nd one when it comes back in) without Emergency Exit activating), allowing at least one first impression or hazards/status aliment

+1 252+ Atk Calyrex-Ice Glacial Lance vs. 228 HP / 36+ Def Golisopod: 138-162 (39.6 - 46.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

244 Atk Golisopod First Impression vs. 248 HP / 4 Def Calyrex-Ice: 200-236 (49.6 - 58.5%) -- 98.4% chance to 2HKO

This is already dealing quite the damage to a regular trick room calyrex-ice, without the bulk however...
244 Atk Golisopod First Impression vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Calyrex-Ice: 200-236 (58.6 - 69.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
it would deal massive chip damage that it would be enough for some neutrally passive teammates like defensive Ho-Oh or yveltal to finish it off.

But if its just there to provide first impression chip and provide a one-way teleport, it wouldn't be a decent pick until its movepool options comes into play, mainly spikes, but also being able to use it and duke it out with some notable mons/cores, Ho-Oh lacking brave bird and/or Tangrowth, any zygarde lacking rest, defensive Dusk Mane bar toxic variants. Toxic is just there for general status crippling

yeah bro this loses to icicle spear, so its kinda loses anyway, along with the fact that you can only immeadiately dent it with dragon pulse so :/

This is a really weird VoTW cause existing "defensive" checks are basically unconventional and only really has offensive answers that are conventional.

Marshadow @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Spectral Thief / Bulk Up
- Poltergeist

Standard LO Marshadow is a offensive check answer to this calyrex-ice for obvious reasons. It functions as a revenge killer and forces Calyrex-Ice to switch out due to its ability to OHKO Calyrex-Ice

252+ Atk Life Orb Marshadow Poltergeist (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Calyrex-Ice: 351-416 (102.9 - 121.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Introducing the MANLIEST of Melmetal

Melmetal @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Acid Armor
- Body Press
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

This Melmetal set checks Banded Caly-Ice, while also acting as a solid check to many of the physical threats in the tier. The 2HKO from Caly-Ice is at best a roll, and Melmetal can proceed to Acid Armor out and beat it along with practically every physical threat, bar Marshadow and Band Zacian-H. Unfortunately, using Melmetal isn't really practical, but the way VoTW has been so far, the best counters and checks have been the mons most frequently used in the tier (ex. Lunala countering SD Groudon, Eternatus countering Special LO Yveltal). I'm honestly not sure what the point of this thread is. I suppose it can serve as a more comprehensive Team Building Compendium, as that thread hasn't been updated in a while. As an aside, it is already well known that the two best Band Caly-Ice counters are Defensive NDM and Defensive Ogre. I'd expect NDM to win this week, as it is simply one of the two most splashable mons in the tier. Maybe eliminating the conventional checks and counters section might be a nice way to allow for innovation, otherwise the most splashable mon will end up winning every single week.

252+ Atk Choice Band Calyrex-Ice High Horsepower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Melmetal: 228-270 (48.1 - 56.9%) -- 37.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Pyukumuku @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Toxic
- Block
- Soak / Spite
- Recover / Rest

Pyukumuku is a check to Band Calyrex-Ice, and a counter to non-band Caly-Ice. Recover heals off more than Glacial Lance and High Horsepower do, freeing up Pyukumuku to Block the horse and Toxic it to death. Unaware means Pyukumuku can come in even after a Grim Neigh/Swords Dance/Weakness Policy and prevent a sweep. Doesn't matter if Caly-Ice switches out on the Block, Pyukumuku can trap most defensive mons like NDM, Eternatus without DTail and Yveltal without Taunt to free up your own sweeper.

Agree with JT Yao though, might be funny to see ZU mons check Ubers but most people will probably stick to the Yvel-Etern-NDM core (+ Tangrowth/Lunala).

Band Calyrex-Ice:
252+ Atk Choice Band Calyrex-Ice Glacial Lance vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Pyukumuku: 125-147 (39.8 - 46.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Non-band Calyrex Ice:
252+ Atk Calyrex-Ice Glacial Lance vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Pyukumuku: 84-99 (26.7 - 31.5%) -- 22.7% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
