The dual primal MU can be very intense, especially when both sets are unknown, but Defensive PDon will come out on top of this matchup assuming no direct damage was taken (SR and Spikes don’t hurt too much, but be careful about too many layers). While Groudon is slower, its 3hkoed by EQ and can Precipice Blades back, which is a comfortable 2hko. In addition, Groudon can Toxic a switch-in or set up Stealth Rock as Kyogre flees. This is a check by far—the right predictions from the Kyogre player can lead to Groudon swiftly leaving the battle, especially since Kyogre is faster.

If Kyogre uses Liquidation, then Giratina can threaten it without too much fear. Ice Beam still hurts, but the way status limits Liquidation Earthquake Kyogre usually makes the trade worth it to the Giratina player. If Giratina gets in on Liquidation or Earthquake, then the decision to use a status move is even easier. Either way, Giratina should get a status attempt against Kyogre and status is usually the method of dealing damage to the opponents team when using the stall teams Giratina finds itself on. If this Kyogre is used against one of these stall teams, Giratina can help create some very favorable scenarios for Kyogre's opposition.

Giratina does not check Calm Mind Kyogre and doesn't like staying in with modest SpA Kyogre for more than a turn. Defensive Kyogre gets walled and Pressure stalled until it loses the 1v1 (unless it has Ice Beam and freezes Giratina with it).

Shadow shield allows lunala to get to plus one with calm mind and then Z to get a guaranteed OHKO. Even after stealth rock lunala lives a liquidation and then procedes to set up and outspeed. Gastrodon (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Earthquake
- Scald
- Toxic / Clear Smog
- Recover

Walled. It can only use ice beam and eq. That gastrodon can also switch on gengar (when it's not already mega evolved and you can still switch), magearna or some special attackers like groundceus and yveltal if you're careful. It can't do much anything else, so its main utility will be in stall.

252+ Atk Kyogre Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Gastrodon: 136-161 (31.9 - 37.7%) -- 0.3% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
0- SpA Kyogre Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 68-81 (15.9 - 19%) -- possible 8HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Dark Aura Yveltal Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 144-169 (33.8 - 39.6%) -- 23.4% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Ferrothorn as a counter

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Protect
- Spikes
- Leech Seed
- Power Whip

Ferrothorn, alongside Primal Groudon, is the first thing that comes to mind of any Ubers player when you ask about something to deal with Kyogre. It only gets 4HKOed by Earthquake at best, it deals chip damage with Iron Barbs if it switches into Liquidation, Leech Seeds slowly chips it, gives you an extra recovery, and puts pressure on anything that would want to switch in, Spikes is just great in general and Ferrothorn gets it for free against Kyogre, Protect gets you one extra turn for recovery every two turns, making Earthquake even harder to KO (it start to not even become a guaranteed 5HKO, and that's without Leech Seed), and Power Whip has a chance to directly OHKO Kyogre after Stealth Rock. All of those things combined not only makes Ferrothorn something that can deal with Kyogre even when it's weakned, but that also doesn't give free switches for most teams when it comes in.

252+ Atk Kyogre-Primal Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Ferrothorn in Heavy Rain: 101-119 (28.6 - 33.8%) -- 97.3% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Kyogre-Primal Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Ferrothorn: 106-125 (30.1 - 35.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

0- SpA Kyogre-Primal Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Ferrothorn: 63-75 (17.8 - 21.3%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery

Mega-Venusaur
is a niche but good counter against primal-Kyogre as it resists its Liquidation and is able to tank Erathquake and Ice Beam as well.
Ice Beams super effectivness gets negated by Mega-Venusaurs Thick Fat ability and Thunder is completly resisted, whereas mega-Venusaur can either Toxic or just Grass Knot
Primal-Kyogre to either whittle it down via status condition or simply putting out a heavy damage. When Primal-Kyogre wants to switch out, Mega-Venusaur can even target the teammate of Pogre
with a Toxic or a Leech seed. Furthermore when the heavy rain ens, Venusaur-Mega can regain 50% of its health back.

Mega Latias avoids the 2HKO from all of physical Primal Kyogre's moves and outspeeds it, so it can come in on pretty much anything, use Toxic, and then Roost stall until the Kyogre user is forced to switch. Once Kyogre is sufficiently weakened it can use Grass Knot / Draco Meteor to pick it off. Liquidation needs 2 defense drops to start doing more than 50% to Latias, so the only relevant hax chance is if you get Thunder para'd/Ice Beam frozen (in which case, it's unfortunately much more likely that Kyogre will break through you, but this applies to all mons that try to switch into ogre). Nominating as a counter. It just so happens that Slowbro's unique typing lets it resist all of Mewtwo Y's coverage moves, and its colossal physical bulk means that it takes next to nothing from Psystrike. It can consistently 2HKO Mewtwo Y with Foul Play, letting it beat Calm Mind/Taunt variants too.

  • 252 SpA Mewtwo-Mega-Y Psystrike vs. 248 HP / 216+ Def Slowbro-Mega: 53-63 (13.4 - 16%) -- possible 7HKO

  • 0- Atk Slowbro-Mega Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 40 Def Mewtwo-Mega-Y: 222-262 (62.8 - 74.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

This isn't all that useful though, since Slowbro should already be paired with a Pursuit trapper like Amuk to deal with Mega Gengar; since its role is that of a physical wall, a well-designed team shouldn't be using it to deal with special attackers. You should only switch it in if you need to or you're unsure of whether the Mewtwo is X or Y.

Mewtwo is going to have fun outpacing the entire tier until Scarf Yveltal comes along and wrecks it with (of all things) Foul Play. It is a soft check, being able to come in anything bar Ice Beam after Rocks, and even IB can OHKO 37.5% of the time after Rocks. It comes in, proceeds to Foul Play or U-turn if MMY is weakened, and brings in, like, Gengar. A nice thing about this is that, in addition to checking MMY, if you guess wrong, it can also check MMX with Oblivion Wing. Ofc MMX isn’t a meta staple or anything, but this can throw off some checks to MMY.

Check
Even if Mewtwo doesn't Mega Evolve right away to keep Unnerve, Focus Blast will never OHKO Arceus, Arceus will gets its Swords Dance, and now Arceus has a priority OHKO on Mewtwo with Extreme Speed. If Arceus is at full health, this particular Mewtwo will never 2HKO Arceus with heavy HP investment with Psystrike outside of crits. If Mewtwo misses the Focus Blast, then Arceus can get get another Swords Dance in the following turns. Most teams Mewtwo finds itself on have limited options for dealing with Extreme Killer Arceus anyways and most of that already limited counterplay goes away when it reaches +4. At any rate, Mewtwo doesn't want to stay in on Arceus if it doesn't have to given just how sour the encounter can go for not just Mewtwo, but the rest of its team.

Mega Mewtwo X is another animal and completely turns the match up on its head given that it has the defense to live +2 Extreme Speed. Base Mewtwo can live +2 Extreme Speed at full health, but still has to rely on two Focus Blasts to KO Arceus.

Arceus @ Chople Berry
