[OVERVIEW]

Umbreon's stellar mixed bulk and Dark typing make it a strong pick on defensive teams, checking threats like Aegislash, Excadrill, Gyarados, and Salamence. It provides fantastic team utility as a Wish passer, getting plenty of opportunities to heal up its teammates versus Pokemon like Aegislash and Salamence. While unable to pressure some defensive Pokemon such as Amoonguss Celesteela, and Teleport Chansey at all, Umbreon can freely use them to pass Wish, and Foul Play + Toxic greatly punishes many offensive checks switching in and prevents Umbreon from being too passive. However, it can offer a lot of opportunities to dangerous Fairy- and Fighting-types like Tapu Bulu, Primarina, and Conkeldurr that can greatly threaten bulkier teams, though Toxic and chip damage from Foul Play and entry hazards can wear them down. Umbreon also struggles versus some of the stronger special attackers in the tier like Thundurus-T and Meteor Beam Nihilego, and chip damage can bring it into 2HKO range of Pokemon it checks like Mamoswine and Nidoking.

move 4: Protect

evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

Foul Play lets Umbreon do considerable damage to physical attackers, being particularly key to checking Dragon Dance users like Gyarados and Salamence. Toxic lets Umbreon punish special attackers like Salamence and Moltres for using Roost against it and most of the broader metagame effectively. Wish alongside Protect keeps Umbreon and its teammates healthy. Protect is also useful to scout Choice-locked Pokemon, like Primarina and Azumarill, and absorb attacks from Pokemon like Heracross and Conkeldurr paired with Future Sight from Slowking. Inner Focus lets Umbreon avoid flinches from Pokemon it checks, like Mamoswine, Gyarados, and Jirachi, and check non-Heal Bell variants of Togekiss. Maximum Defense investment with a Bold nature lets Umbreon avoid the 2HKO from Mamoswine's Earthquake after Stealth Rock while improving its matchup versus Pokemon like mixed Aegislash and Excadrill. A Calm nature is an option to prevent Modest Nidoking and Life Orb Draco Meteor Hydreigon from 2HKOing Umbreon after Stealth Rock. This, however, makes Umbreon unable to check Mamoswine and more damaged by Pokemon like Excadrill and Dragon Dance Gyarados.

Umbreon predominantly fits on balance, semi-stall, and stall teams as a fantastic check to threatening Pokemon like Aegislash and Gyarados, as well as key team support through Wish. Skarmory, Amoonguss, and Galarian Weezing can check threats like Conkeldurr and Tapu Bulu for Umbreon. Skarmory can also provide an additional Excadrill check, Spikes support, and an Azumarill check, while Galarian Weezing can provide Defog support. Aegislash is an incredible partner, checking Pokemon like Lycanroc-D, Calm Mind Galarian Slowbro, and Nihilego if Umbreon wants to avoid taking Knock Off. Substitute + Toxic Aegislash synergizes amazingly with Umbreon, not only appreciating its Wish support letting it more freely use Substitute, but also its Toxic forcing Zarude and RestTalk Primarina to use their limited PP curing poison, letting Aegislash beat them long term. Slowking can check Kommo-o and Primarina for Umbreon, while Umbreon checks Aegislash and Hydreigon for it. Cleric support is vital, as Umbreon gets easily statused by Pokemon it checks like Aegislash. Togekiss is a great option that can help check Hydreigon and provide an extra wincon with Nasty Plot versus the bulkier teams Umbreon struggles to make progress against, as well as checking Kommo-o and Conkeldurr. Chansey is another fantastic option that can counter Primarina, Hydreigon, and Nidoking, while Articuno can also provide simultaneous Heal Bell and Defog support alongside Pressure, beating and PP stalling the top Spikes setters in Roserade and Skarmory. Quagsire is a superb teammate on stall teams, dealing with Calm Mind Galarian Slowbro, Belly Drum Azumarill, and Nasty Plot Thundurus-T. Nihilego can check Hydreigon and Thundurus-T for Umbreon while providing Stealth Rock and Knock Off support against Pokemon like Excadrill and Aegislash.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Heal Bell is an option that lets Umbreon clear status from itself and its teammates, making its matchup versus Pokemon like specially defensive Aegislash better. Dropping Toxic for it, however, makes Umbreon noticeably more passive and invites offensive Pokemon in, giving it far fewer opportunities to safely pass Wish. Therefore, it should only be used on teams with absolutely no better options against status. Moonlight may seem appealing at first glance to give Umbreon one-turn recovery, but its low PP causes issues long term. Also, the lack of Protect lowers Umbreon's flexibility; it can't use Wish and have the option to reliably self-heal instead of passing it.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-types like Cobalion, Heracross, and Conkeldurr are some of the biggest threats to Umbreon. Conkeldurr can be deterred by Umbreon stalling for burn damage, but Drain Punch variants can easily regain their HP versus Umbreon's teammates, forming a long-term threat. Cobalion's Toxic immunity and ability in Justified let it safely switch into Umbreon, although variants lacking Swords Dance cannot break through Umbreon without a Justified boost.

**Fairy-types**: Defensive Primarina variants can easily wall Umbreon and sponge Toxic while pressuring its teammates. For non-defensive sets, Umbreon can outspeed and poison Substitute + Calm Mind variants or scout Choice Specs variants, but the former sets up for free if not immediately poisoned, and the latter poses a serious threat to Umbreon's teammates. Hatterene can easily set up on Umbreon, bouncing back Toxic. While Togekiss cannot beat Umbreon without Heal Bell due to Inner Focus, Heal Bell + Nasty Plot variants can set up provided they have enough Heal Bell PP remaining.

**Dark-types**: Crawdaunt is a huge threat to Umbreon thanks to its cosmic damage output and resistance to Foul Play. Zarude's resistance to Foul Play and ability to sponge Toxic with Jungle Healing make it a great pivot into Umbreon; however, it cannot easily beat Umbreon itself unless Umbreon has wasted a lot of PP, and Zarude must be careful to not waste too much Jungle Healing PP if it needs check a teammate like Substitute + Toxic Aegislash. Galarian Moltres completely walls Umbreon and can potentially set up on it; RestTalk sets in particular can do this with complete impunity.

**Chip Damage**: Pokemon such as Mamoswine and Nidoking can easily get the edge versus Umbreon if it has been chipped by entry hazards, lost its Leftovers to Knock Off from a Pokemon like Nihilego or Mamoswine itself, or statused. While Umbreon still avoids being 2HKOed by Life Orb Mamoswine without its Leftovers, Stealth Rock makes the 2HKO decently likely. Modest Nidoking can 2HKO Bold Umbreon with Stealth Rock up, forcing it to waste passive turns on Protect, which can be easily predicted. While less common, Spikes and Toxic Spikes can also damage Umbreon enough to threaten its winning matchups.

  • Umbreon's stellar mixed bulk and Dark-typing make it a cornerstone of defensive teams in UU, checking threats like Aegislash, Salamence, Gyarados, and Mamoswine.
  • It provides fantastic team utility as a Wish passer, getting plenty of opportunities to Heal up its teammates versus Pokemon like Aegislash and Salamence.
  • The combination of Foul Play + Toxic is very punishing to switch into, preventing Umbreon from being passive in its role as a defensive Dark-type. This combination is particularly dangerous for offensive Pokemon to switch into over longer periods especially in combination with Toxic stalling through Protect, while Umbreon can easily punish defensive pivots such as Tangrowth or Rotom-W for trying to pivot into it.
  • While unable to pressure some defensive Pokemon such as Amoonguss, Celesteela, or Teleport Chansey at all, these Pokemon offer Umbreon very free Wish passes to its teammates.
  • Despite Umbreon being a defensive behemoth and an integral part of Balance and Stall teams, it is not without its weaknesses that require team support to deal with. In particular, while they struggle to take advantage of Umbreon long term due to Foul Play and Toxic stalling, Umbreon offers a lot of opportunities to dangerous Fairy- and Fighting-types in the short term such as Conkeldurr, Mienshao, and Kommo-o, that can be quite threatening to bulkier teams. switch out one of the fighting types for a fairy-type like hatterene or primarina
  • Umbreon also struggles versus some of the stronger special attackers in the tier that Pokemon like Chansey would handle more easily such as Thundurus-I and Primarina, due to Umbreon's status as more of a mixed wall.

Paragraph 1

  • talk about the combo of wish and protect, allowing it to heal itself and its teammates. Bring up pros to protect like scouting choice locked keldeo and azumarill
  • Toxic lets Umbreon punish a lot of its switch ins, both offensive checks like Keldeo, Mienshao, and Azumarill, as well as defensive pivots such as Zarude and Tangrowth, noticeably forcing Zarude to waste Jungle Healing PP against Umbreon, which teammates such as Aegislash can take advantage of in the long term. Against Mienshao this is crucial in the longer term too, as it starts to struggle to consistently switch in against Umbreon due to Foul Play + 2 turns of Toxic damage equaling roughly two rounds of Regenerator healing, forcing it to find more free points of entry to regain HP over time.
  • Toxic also lets Umbreon punish the miscellaneous special attacking Pokemon it walls such as Salamence and Moltres by preventing them from freely Roosting against it. try to incorporate this point into the above one. It could be something like "Toxic lets Umbreon punish lots of Pokemon ranging from offensive checks like Keldeo and Mienshao to defensive pivots like Zarude and Tangrowth. It also lets Umbreon punish Pokemon like Salamence who attempt to freely use Roost in front of it"
  • talk about inner focus and how it can avoid flinches from mamoswine and gyarados
  • talk about EV spread and why it is better to run physically defensive
  • Umbreon can run a Calm nature to improve its Nidoking matchup, as Modest versions of Nidoking more often than not will 2HKO Umbreon otherwise after Stealth Rock. This comes at the cost of being unable to properly check Mamoswine, taking more damage from miscellaneous threats like Dragon Dance Gyarados and Salamence, and taking noticeably more damage from Lycanroc-Dusk, making it able to force Umbreon out much more easily even with a Wish pre-loaded.

Paragraph 2
  • Umbreon predominantly fits on Balance, Semi-Stall, and Stall teams as a fantastic check to threatening Pokemon like Aegislash and Gyarados, while providing key team support through Wish.
  • Tangrowth and Amoonguss are fantastic at helping Umbreon check Fighting-types and Fairy-types Water-types like Mienshao, Keldeo, Primarina, and Azumarill. Physically defensive Tangrowth in particular is a fantastic teammate that can help deal with Swords Dance Aegislash and threatening physical rain wallbreakers like Crawdaunt, while providing Rocky Helmet chip to wear down even faster the Fighting-types like Mienshao and Kommo-o that Umbreon lets in.
  • Starmie provides a great Keldeo check for Umbreon, and offers reliable hazard removal by virtue of its solid matchup versus setters such as Nihilego, Rhyperior, and Roserade. Starmie also offers valuable Speed and offensively checks threats such as Lycanroc-D and the aforementioned Keldeo, and pairs especially well with the aforementioned Physically defensive Tangrowth as a secondary Keldeo check. (not needed info) In return Starmie appreciates Umbreon handling Aegislash for it, which can otherwise prevent it from Spinning in the shorter term.
  • Aegislash is an incredible partner for Umbreon, checking Pokemon like Lycanroc-D, Calm Mind Slowbro-Galar, Nihilego if Umbreon wants to avoid taking Knock Off, and Choice-locked threats that can be scouted when trying to threaten Umbreon such as Keldeo and Azumarill. way too many examples, limit it to two or three. Substitute + Toxic Aegislash synergizes amazingly with Umbreon, not only appreciating its Wish support letting it more freely use Substitutes, but appreciating the fact that typical checks to Aegislash such as Rest + Sleep Talk Primarina, and Zarude, are the standard pivots into Umbreon and get forced to waste their PP dealing with Umbreon's Toxic's, allowing Aegislash to break them longer term.
  • Cleric support is absolutely vital with Umbreon, as it gets rather commonly statused by Pokemon it checks such as Toxic Aegislash. Togekiss is a great option on more Balance-orientated teams, providing Heal Bell as well as a solid win condition with Nasty Plot. On more stall-orientated teams, Chansey pairs very nicely as a check to Primarina and more reliable answer to Nidoking and Starmie, while similarly offering Cleric support.
  • Nihilego is a great teammate to Umbreon that can offensively pressure Thundurus and Togekiss, provide Stealth Rock, absorb Toxic Spikes and check Moltres-Galar, which otherwise sets up on Umbreon freely. It appreciates Umbreon checking Aegislash for it in return. Rhyperior is also an option that can also provide an Electric-immunity versus Rotom-H, but can get overwhelmed against the Thundurus formes. Thundurus and Thundurus-I. move this point between aegislash and cleric support for better flow
  • On said stall teams, Quagsire makes a fantastic teammate as a check to Pokemon like Slowbro-Galar, Lycanroc-D, and Belly Drum Azumarill, and Electric-immunity against Rotom-W and Rotom-H. Quagsire especially appreciates that Umbreon handles Dragon Dance Gyarados for it.

Heal Bell is an option on Umbreon that lets it clear status from itself and its teammates, making its matchup versus Pokemon like specially defensive Aegislash better. This, however, makes Umbreon noticeably more passive due to the lack of Toxic punishing many of its switch-ins, and should only be done on teams where Umbreon's teammates absolutely cannot fit Heal Bell or Aromatherapy support, or reliable status spongers.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fighting-types**: Physical Fighting-types like Mienshao, Keldeo, Kommo-o, and Conkeldurr are some of the biggest threats to Umbreon, being able to nearly OHKO it. Thanks to Regenerator, Mienshao is less easily punished by switching into Umbreon, although it can still get forced into finding free entry opportunities to regain HP with Regenerator by being overwhelmed by Foul Play + two rounds of Toxic damage. Although an uncommon situation, Mienshao must also be aware that it cannot OHKO a full HP Umbreon without a max roll, making it susceptible to being killed with Foul Play afterwards if it was chipped and Umbreon had pre-loaded a Wish. Conkeldurr can be annoyed by Umbreon stalling out Burn damage, but Drain Punch variants can easily regain their HP vs Umbreon's teammates, forming a long term threat. Kommo-o's solid bulk lets it easily set up against Umbreon, although it must be wary of being Toxic stalled by it and its teammates. I feel like you could just shorten this to- "However, all of these dislike being Toxic stalled and chipped by Foul Play." You can still keep the bits about mienshao having more leeway because of regenerator as well as conk being unable to get Toxic stalled because of its burn and heal off damage with Drain Punch. I trust you can fix this up

**Water-types**: Keldeo and Primarina are also some of the biggest threats to Umbreon, although Choiced variants can be easier to deal with by being Protect scouted. While Keldeo doesn't enjoy switching into Toxic, it can easily force Umbreon out, and Calm Mind sets can easily punish Umbreon for assuming Choice Specs and attempting to scout with Protect. Primarina similarly forces Umbreon out and can put immense pressure on its teammates if running a Choice Specs set, while Rest + Sleep Talk sets are able to sponge Toxic from Umbreon and still apply pressure to Umbreon's team. Azumarill and Crawdaunt don't appreciate Umbreon scouting their Choiced sets, but can easily force Umbreon out. Life Orb Crawdaunt, especially on Rain teams, can use Umbreon as an opportunity to wallbreak very effectively. Belly Drum Azumarill doesn't want to set up on Umbreon directly as Foul Play will OHKO it if it has taken Stealth Rock damage, but can be extremely punishing if it can bluff another set.

talked about this in QC but make this point about Fairy-types instead. You can talk about Choiced Azu and Prim being able force out Umbreon as well as Pokemon like Togekiss, Sub CM Primarina, and Hatterene being able to set up on it and win

**Chip Damage**: Umbreon's matchup versus Pokemon such as Mamoswine and Nidoking can easily be tipped in the latter's favour if Umbreon has been chipped by entry hazards, losing its Leftovers to Knock Off from a Pokemon like Nihilego or Mamoswine itself, and status. While Umbreon still avoids being 2HKO'd by Life Orb Mamoswine without its Leftovers, it has a decent chance to be 2HKO'd if Stealth Rock are up, and it can struggle to stay as reliably healthy without its Leftovers. Modest Nidoking can 2HKO Umbreon with Stealth Rock up if it is not running a Calm nature, forcing it to waste passive turns on Protect which can be easily predicted. While less common, Spikes and Toxic Spikes can also effect Umbreon's matchup versus a range of Pokemon such as Mamoswine and Choice Specs Aegislash.

make this point into powerful wallbreakers and just say that Pokemon like Mamoswine, Nidoking, and Crawdaunt can all muscle through Umbreon if chipped by entry hazards such as spikes and stealth rock

great job QC 1/3, just make sure to keep it less wordy lol. Also fix up on some GP stuff, it should be Galarian Slowbro and Galarian Moltres for example.

Reword this point to say Umbreon gives free turns to Fairy- and Fighting-types like... which it struggles with. The whole Foul Play and Toxic damage bit can be added after but it doesn't really apply to Hatterene. I'd also throw in a mention of Cobalion who resists Foul Play and gets a Justified boost and is immune to Toxic.
  • Umbreon also struggles versus some of the stronger special attackers in the tier that Pokemon like Chansey would handle more easily such as Thundurus-T and Primarina, due to Umbreon's status as more of a mixed wall. Remove the Chansey bit, just list some SpA breakers that overwhelm it.

I would like the STAB first but talking about Toxic before Protect makes more sense. You can list the targets then when the Protect point comes up you can expand further on that racking up damage vs these targets.

[SET COMMENTS]

Paragraph 1

  • Wish alongside Protect lets Umbreon keep itself healthy and heal its teammates. Protect is also useful to scout Choiced Pokemon like Keldeo and Azumarill, and stall out extra Toxic damage versus switch ins like Mienshao, putting further pressure on them alongside Foul Play damage.
  • Toxic lets Umbreon punish special attackers like Salamence and Moltres for attempting to Roost against it, ass well as punishing a lot of its switch ins, both offensive checks like Keldeo, Mienshao, and Azumarill, as well as defensive pivots such as Zarude and Tangrowth, noticeably forcing Zarude to waste Jungle Healing PP against Umbreon, which teammates such as Aegislash can take advantage of in the long term. This seems unnecessary to split them up. Just make a list of four different mons Toxic punishes to prevent them taking advantage of Umbreon easily. You write more than you need to. Against Mienshao this is crucial in the longer term too, as Foul Play + 2 turns of Toxic damage equals roughly two rounds of Regenerator healing, forcing it to find more free points of entry to regain HP over time.
  • Inner Focus lets Umbreon avoid being flinched by Pokemon it checks like Mamoswine, Gyarados, and Jirachi. It also lets Umbreon check non-Heal Bell variants of Togekiss.
  • Maximum Defense investment with a Bold nature lets Umbreon avoid being 2HKO'd by Mamoswine's Earthquake after Stealth Rock, or before Stealth Rock if it has lost its Leftovers, while improving its matchup versus Pokemon like mixed Aegislash and Gyarados.
  • Umbreon can run a Calm nature to improve its Nidoking matchup, as Modest versions of Nidoking more often than not will 2HKO Umbreon otherwise after Stealth Rock. This comes at the cost of being unable to properly check Mamoswine, taking more damage from Pokemon it checks like Dragon Dance Gyarados and Salamence, and taking noticeably more damage from Lycanroc-D, making it able to force Umbreon out much more easily even with a Wish pre-loaded. Cut this down

  • Tangrowth and Amoonguss are fantastic at helping Umbreon check Fighting-types and Fairy-types like Mienshao, Keldeo, Primarina, and Azumarill. Physically defensive Tangrowth in particular is a fantastic teammate that can help deal with Swords Dance Aegislash and threatening physical Rain wallbreakers like Crawdaunt, while providing Rocky Helmet chip to wear down even faster the Fighting-types like Mienshao and Kommo-o that Umbreonn lets it. Don't think this is necessary, Amoonguss does a fine enough job handling both too. As for the helmet part Mienshao has Regen so it's not as impactful and Kommo-o can run mixed sets so meh
  • Starmie provides a great Keldeo check for Umbreon, and offers reliable hazard removal by virtue of its solid matchup versus setters such as Nihilego, Rhyperior, and Roserade. Starmie also offers valuable Speed, offensively checking threats such as Lycanroc-D and the aforementioned Keldeo, as well as serving as a direct switch-in to the latter. In return Starmie appreciates Umbreon handling Aegislash for it, which can otherwise prevent it from removing hazards with Rapid Spin. Spinning in the shorter term.
  • Aegislash is an incredible partner for Umbreon, checking Pokemon like Lycanroc-D, Calm Mind Galarian Slowbro Slowbro-Galar, and Nihilego if Umbreon wants to avoid taking Knock Off. Substitute + Toxic Aegislash synergises amazingly with Umbreon, not only appreciating its Wish support letting it more freely use Substitutes, but appreciating the fact that Umbreon can force Zarude and RestTalk Primarina to use their limited PP curing poison letting Aegislash beat them longterm. typical checks to Aegislash such as Rest + Sleep Talk Primarina, and Zarude, are the standard pivots into Umbreon and get forced to waste their PP dealing with Umbreon's Toxic's, allowing Aegislash to break them longer term.
  • Nihilego is a great teammate to Umbreon that can offensively pressure Thundurus, provide Stealth Rock, absorb Toxic Spikes and check Galarian Moltres Moltres-Galar and Togekiss. It appreciates Umbreon checking Aegislash for it in return. Rhyperior is also an option that can also provide an Electric-immunity versus Rotom-H, but can get overwhelmed against the Thundurus formes.
  • Cleric support is absolutely vital with Umbreon, as it gets rather commonly status'd by Pokemon it checks such as Toxic Aegislash. This is implied
  • On said stall teams, Quagsire makes a fantastic teammate as a check to Pokemon like Galarian Slowbro Slowbro-Galar, Lycanroc-D, and Belly Drum Azumarill, and Electric-immunity against Rotom-W and Rotom-H. Quagsire especially appreciates that Umbreon handles Dragon Dance Gyarados for it.

Kommo-o's solid bulk lets it easily set up against Umbreon, although it must be wary of being Toxic stalled by it and its teammates. Keldeo is easily scouted by Umbreon if running a Choiced variant, but Calm Mind sets can punish this.

**Fairy-types**: While Choice Specs Primarina is easily scouted by Umbreon, it can pose a serious threat to its teammates. Defensive variants can easily wall Umbreon and sponge Toxic, while applying pressure to Umbreon's teammates. Substitute + Calm Mind variants can also use Umbreon as a free set up opportunity, but must be wary of taking a Toxic either on switch-in or because their set had been revealed, as Umbreon is faster. Hatterene can easily set up on Umbreon and doesn't care about Toxic. While Togekiss cannot beat Umbreon without Heal Bell due to Inner Focus, Heal Bell variants of Nasty Plot Togekiss can set-up against Umbreon provided they have enough Heal Bell PP remaining. Azumarill is not usually a threat to Umbreon, as Choiced variants can be easily scouted and Belly Drum variants cannot safely set up against it due to Foul Play, but can be threatening if Belly Drum variants can bluff another set to force a switch for free set-up.

**Dark-types**: Crawdaunt is a huge threat to Umbreon, especially when under rain, thanks to its cosmic damage output and resistance to Foul Play. Zarude's resistance to Foul Play and ability to sponge Toxic with Jungle Healing makes it a great pivot into Umbreon, although it must be careful to not waste too much Jungle Healing PP if needed to check a teammate like SubToxic Aegislash. [OVERVIEW]

Umbreon's stellar mixed bulk and Dark-typing make it a cornerstone of defensive teams this language feels a little too strong to me here tbh, as it makes Umbreon sound closer to being a top-tier presence than it is. I think "strong defensive pick" or something along those lines should be considered instead in UU, checking threats like Aegislash, Salamence, Gyarados, and Mamoswine. It provides fantastic team utility as a Wish passer, getting plenty of opportunities to Heal up its teammates versus Pokemon like Aegislash and Salamence. The combination of Foul Play + Toxic is very punishing to switch into, preventing Umbreon from being passive in its role as a defensive Dark-type. While unable to pressure some defensive Pokemon such as Amoongus, Celesteela, or Teleport Chansey at all, these Pokemon offer Umbreon very free Wish passes to its teammates. I'd maybe put this sentence after the one on its ability to heal up teammates on Mence/Aegi. Right now it kinda messes up the flow reading about its wish passing capabilities before and after the note of its other moves. Keeping that information closer together should add a lil more cohesion. However, Umbreon is not without its weaknesses that require team support to deal with. Umbreon can offer a lot of opportunities to dangerous Fairy- and Fighting-types like Hatterene, Cobalion, Mienshao, and Kommo-o, that can be quite threatening to bulkier teams. While the last two struggle to take advantage of Umbreon long-term due to Toxic + Foul Play, Hatterene and Cobalion in particular remain unphased by this combination. Umbreon also struggles versus some of the stronger special attackers in the tier like Thundurus-T and Meteor Beam Nihilego, due to Umbreon's status as more of a mixed wall. I'd also add a note here on chip damage often messing up Umbreon's ability to reliably check a lot of things it'll be called on to answer in a match, like Mamoswine and Nidoking.

Paragraph 1

  • I'd probably add a line on Foul Play here, as it's less of a straightforward explanation than a STAB move on a more offensively-inclined Pokemon. Also could just be helpful for illuminating more of Umbreon's defensive perks. Toxic lets Umbreon punish special attackers like Salamence and Moltres for attempting to Roost against it, defensive pivots like Zarude and Rest Talk Primarina, and offensive checks like Keldeo, Mienshao, and Azumarill. Wish alongside Protect lets Umbreon keep itself healthy and heal its teammates. Protect is also useful to scout Choiced Pokemon like Keldeo and Azumarill. Inner Focus lets Umbreon avoid being Flinched by Pokemon it checks like Mamoswine, Gyarados, and Jirachi. It also lets Umbreon check non-Heal Bell variants of Togekiss. Maximum Defence pretty sure I've caught this instead of 'Defense' a few times throughout this analysis, so patch that up before sending this to GP investment with a Bold nature lets Umbreon avoid being 2HKO'd by Mamoswine's Earthquake after Stealth Rock while improving its matchup versus Pokemon like mixed Aegislash and Gyarados. A Calm nature is an option to improve Umbreon's Nidoking matchup, as Modest variants will often 2HKO Umbreon after Stealth Rock. This, however, comes at the cost of being unable to check Mamoswine and taking more damage from Pokemon like Dragon Dance Gyarados and Salamence.

Paragraph 2
  • Umbreon predominantly fits on balance, semi-stall, and stall teams as a fantastic check to threatening Pokemon like Aegislash and Gyarados, while providing key team support through Wish. Tangrowth and Amoonguss are fantastic at helping Umbreon check Fighting-types and Fairy-types like Mienshao, Keldeo, Primarina, and Azumarill. They can both help out versus Swords Dance Aegislash and threatening physical Rain wallbreakers like Crawdaunt for Umbreon as well. Starmie provides a great Keldeo check for Umbreon, and offers reliable hazard removal by virtue of its solid matchup versus setters such as Nihilego, Rhyperior, and Roserade. Starmie also offers valuable Speed, offensively checking threats such as Lycanroc-D and the aforementioned Keldeo. In return Starmie appreciates Umbreon handling Aegislash for it, which can otherwise prevent it from removing hazards with Rapid Spin. Aegislash is an incredible partner for Umbreon, checking Pokemon like Lycanroc-D, Calm Mind Galarian Slowbro, and Nihilego if Umbreon wants to avoid taking Knock Off. Substitute + Toxic Aegislash synergises amazingly with Umbreon, not only appreciating its Wish support letting it more freely use Substitute, but also appreciating the fact that Umbreon can force Zarude and RestTalk Primarina to use their limited PP curing poison letting Aegislash beat them longterm. Nihilego is a great teammate to Umbreon that can offensively pressure Thundurus be sure to adjust this, provide Stealth Rock and absorb Toxic Spikes, and check Galarian Moltres and Togekiss. It appreciates Umbreon checking Aegislash for it in return. Rhyperior is also an option that can also provide an Electric-immunity versus Rotom-H, but can get overwhelmed against the Thundurus formes just Thundy T now. Cleric support is absolutely vital with Umbreon, as it gets rather commonly status'd inflicted with status, not status'd by Pokemon it checks such as Aegislash. Togekiss is a great option on more balance-orientated teams, providing Heal Bell as well as a solid win condition with Nasty Plot I'd elaborate on this just a bit by saying that Togekiss can patch up some of Umbreon's stalemate-like matchups against various defensive Pokemon. On more stall-orientated teams, Chansey pairs very nicely as a check to Primarina and more reliable answer to Nidoking and Starmie. On said stall teams, Quagsire makes a fantastic teammate as a check to Pokemon like Galarian Slowbro, Lycanroc-D, and Belly Drum Azumarill. Quagsire especially appreciates that Umbreon handles Dragon Dance Gyarados for it.

Other Options
=============

Is Moonlight maybe worth mentioning here? It's def bad but I think one-turn recovery on a defensive mon is something worth addressing in some capacity in analyses just given that they're geared toward metagame clarity for newer readers.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-types like Mienshao, Kommo-o, Cobalion, and Conkeldurr are some of the biggest threats to Umbreon. Thanks to Regenerator, Mienshao is less easily punished by switching into Umbreon, although it can still be worn down by Toxic and Foul Play over time. Conkeldurr can be annoyed by Umbreon stalling out Burn damage, but Drain Punch variants can easily regain their HP vs Umbreon's teammates, forming a long term threat. Cobalion's Toxic immunity and ability Justified let it safely switch into Umbreon, although versions lacking Swords Dance cannot break through Umbreon without Justified boosts.

**Fairy-types**: While Choice Specs Primarina is easily scouted by Umbreon, it can pose a serious threat to its teammates. Defensive variants can easily wall Umbreon and sponge Toxic, while applying pressure to Umbreon's teammates. Substitute + Calm Mind variants can also use Umbreon as a free set up opportunity, but must be wary of taking a Toxic due to Umbreon's greater speed.

**Dark-types**: Crawdaunt is a huge threat to Umbreon, especially when under rain, thanks to its cosmic damage output and resistance to Foul Play. Zarude's resistance to Foul Play and ability to sponge Toxic with Jungle Healing makes it a great pivot into Umbreon, although it must be careful to not waste too much Jungle Healing PP if needed to check a teammate like SubToxic Aegislash I think instead of this I'd maybe note that Zarude can struggle to power through Umbreon on its own without sufficient chip damage. Galarian Moltres completely walls Umbreon, and can potentially setup on it; RestTalk sets in particular can do this with complete impunity.

**Chip Damage**: Umbreon's matchup versus Pokemon such as Mamoswine and Nidoking can easily be tipped in the latter's favour if Umbreon has been chipped by entry hazards, losing its Leftovers to Knock Off from a Pokemon like Nihilego or Mamoswine itself, and status grammar is a little rough here so patch that up. While Umbreon still avoids being 2HKO'd by Life Orb Mamoswine without its Leftovers, it has a decent chance to be 2HKO'd if Stealth Rock are up, and it can struggle to stay as reliably healthy without its Leftovers This section feels like it could use trimming and this part in particular feels like it can be cut.

[OVERVIEW]

Umbreon's stellar mixed bulk and Dark-typing make it a strong pick on defensive teams in UU, checking threats like Aegislash, Excadrill, Gyarados, and Salamence. It provides fantastic team utility as a Wish passer, getting plenty of opportunities to heal up its teammates versus Pokemon like Aegislash and Salamence. While unable to pressure some defensive Pokemon such as Amoongus, Celesteela, or Teleport Chansey at all, these Pokemon offer Umbreon very free Wish passes to its teammates, and the combination of Foul Play + Toxic is very punishing to switch into for a lot of offensive checks, preventing Umbreon from being passive in its role as a defensive Dark-type. However, Umbreon is not without its weaknesses that require team support to deal with. Umbreon can offer a lot of opportunities to dangerous Fairy- and Fighting-types like Tapu Bulu, Primarina, Conkeldurr, and Mienshao that can be quite threatening to bulkier teams, although they are vulnerable to being worn down through Toxic and chip damage from Foul Play and entry hazards. Umbreon also struggles versus some of the stronger special attackers in the tier like Thundurus-T and Meteor Beam Nihilego, due to Umbreon's status as more of a mixed wall, and is vulnerable to being worn down into 2HKO range of Pokemon it checks like Mamoswine and Nidoking if it gets unnecessarily chipped.

[SET COMMENTS]

Foul Play lets Umbreon do considerable damage to physical attackers, in particular being key to checking Dragon Dance users like Gyarados and Salamence. Toxic lets Umbreon punish special attackers like Salamence and Moltres for attempting to Roost against it, defensive pivots like Zarude and Rest Talk Primarina, and offensive checks like Tapu Bulu, Mienshao, and Azumarill. It also helps wear down any Slowking that attempt to saffely Teleport against Umbreon to bring their checks in, and lets Umbreon more effectively check Pokemon like Hydreigon and Galarian Moltres. You could write a lot less about Toxic than listing 10 scenarios to click it. Just say it should be used to punish X, Y, Z. Then if there are crucial matchups to expand on/bring up then keep it to one or two Wish alongside Protect lets Umbreon keep itself healthy and heal its teammates. Protect is also useful to scout Choiced Pokemon like Primarina and Azumarill, and absorb attacks from Pokemon like Heracross and Conkeldurr when trying to absorb Future Sight from Slowking. Inner Focus lets Umbreon avoid being flinched by Pokemon it checks like Mamoswine, Gyarados, and Jirachi. It also lets Umbreon check non-Heal Bell variants of Togekiss. Maximum Defence investment with a Bold nature lets Umbreon avoid being 2HKO'd by Mamoswine's Earthquake after Stealth Rock while improving its matchup versus Pokemon like mixed Aegislash and Excadrill. A Calm nature is an option to improve Umbreon's Nidoking and Hydreigon matchups, preventing Modest Nidoking and Life Orb Draco Meteor Hydreigon 2HKO'ing Umbreon after Stealth Rock. This, however, comes at the cost of being unable to check Mamoswine and taking more damage from Pokemon like Excadrill and Dragon Dance Gyarados.

Umbreon predominantly fits on balance, semi-stall, and stall teams as a fantastic check to threatening Pokemon like Aegislash and Gyarados, while providing key team support through Wish. Skarmory, Amoonguss, and Galarian Weezing can check threats like Conkeldurr, Mienshao, and Tapu Bulu for Umbreon. Skarmory can also provide an additional Excadrill check, Spikes support, and an Azumarill check, while Galarian Weezing can provide Defog support. Slowking can check Kommo-o and Primarina for Umbreon, and provide either pivoting support with Teleport or a fearsome win conition with Calm Mind sets, allowing it to break through and check Pokemon like Calm Mind Slowbro-Galar, while Umbreon checks Aegislash and Hydreigon for it. I'd hold off on this given CM hasn't really been explored too much Cleric support is vital to pair with Umbreon, as it gets easily statused by Pokemon it checks like Aegislash. Togekiss is a great option that can help check Hydreigon and provide an extra win condition with Nasty Plot versus the bulkier teams Umbreon struggles to make progress into, while checking Kommo-o and Conkeldurr. Chansey is another fantastic option that can counter Primarina, Hydreigon, and Nidoking, while Articuno can also provide Heal Bell and Defog support at the same time in combination with Pressure, beating and out PP'ing the two Spikes setters in Roserade and Skarmory. Quagsire is a superb teammate on Stallier-teams Yea I don't know if this is a word. Just say 'on stall', dealing with Calm Mind Galarian Slowbro, Belly Drum Azumarill, and Nasty Plot Thundurus-T. Nihilego can also help to check Hydreigon and Thundurus-T for Umbreon while providing Stealth Rock and Knock Off support against Pokemon like Excadrill and Aegislash.

This, however, makes Umbreon noticeably more passive due to the lack of Toxic punishing many of its switch-ins, and making it a far less effective Wish passer by no longer discouraging Offensive Pokemon to switch in, and should only be done on teams where Umbreon's teammates absolutely cannot fit Heal Bell or Aromatherapy support, or reliable status spongers. Moonlight may seem appealing at first glance to give Umbreon guaranteed one-turn recovery, but its low PP causes issues for Umbreon long-term and the lack of Protect makes it hard for Umbreon to safely pass itself Wishes.

This, however, makes Umbreon noticeably more passive due to the lack of Toxic punishing many of its switch-ins, and making it a far less effective Wish passer by no longer discouraging allowing offensive Pokemon to switch in freely (should definitely fix Offensive to offensive, but the sentence change is nitpick, I just feel like having a positive statement after the word by sounds nicer to read), and should only be done on teams where Umbreon's teammates absolutely cannot fit Heal Bell or Aromatherapy support(either this or "... where Umbreon's team cannot..."), or reliable status spongers. This, Dropping Toxic for it, however, makes Umbreon noticeably more passive due to the lack of Toxic punishing many of its switch-ins, and making it a far less effective Wish passer by no longer discouraging Offensive Pokemon to switch in, and should only be done on teams where Umbreon's teammates absolutely cannot fit Heal Bell or Aromatherapy support, or reliable status spongers. and invites offensive Pokemon in, giving it far fewer opportunities to safely pass Wish. Therefore, it should only be used on teams with absolutely no better options against status. Moonlight may seem appealing at first glance to give Umbreon guaranteed one-turn recovery, but its low PP causes issues for Umbreon long-term and the lack of Protect makes it hard for Umbreon to safely pass itself Wishes. long term. Also, the lack of Protect lowers Umbreon's flexibility: it can't use Wish and have the option to reliably self-heal instead of passing it. (I imagine?)

Checks and Counters
===================

Conkeldurr can be annoyed by Umbreon stalling out Burn damage, but Drain Punch variants can easily regain their HP vs isn't too bothered by switching into Umbreon, although Toxic and Foul Play can still wear it down over time. Conkeldurr can be deterred by Umbreon stalling for burn damage, but Drain Punch variants can easily regain their HP versus Umbreon's teammates, forming a long-term (added hyphen) threat. Cobalion's Toxic immunity and ability in Justified let it safely switch into Umbreon, although versions variants lacking Swords Dance cannot break through Umbreon without a Justified boosts. (i imagine one is enough? ignore this if i'm wrong though)

**Fairy-types**: While Choice Specs Primarina is easily scouted by Umbreon, it can pose a serious threat to its teammates. Defensive variants can easily wall Umbreon and sponge Toxic, while applying pressure to Umbreon's teammates. Substitute + Calm Mind variants can also use Umbreon as a free set up opportunity, but must be wary of taking a Toxic due to Umbreon's greater speed Defensive Primarina variants can easily wall Umbreon and sponge Toxic while pressuring its teammates. For non-defensive sets, Umbreon can outspeed and poison Substitute + Calm Mind variants or scout Choice Specs variants, but the former set up for free if not immediately poisoned, and the latter pose a serious threat to Umbreon's teammates. Hatterene can easily set up on Umbreon and doesn't care about Umbreon, bouncing back Toxic. While Togekiss cannot beat Umbreon without Heal Bell due to Inner Focus, Heal Bell variants of Nasty Plot Togekiss can set-up against Umbreon + Nasty Plot variants can set up provided they have enough Heal Bell PP remaining.

**Dark-types**: Crawdaunt is a huge threat to Umbreon thanks to its cosmic damage output and resistance to Foul Play. Zarude's resistance to Foul Play and ability to sponge Toxic with Jungle Healing makes it a great pivot into Umbreon; (comma -> semicolon) however, it cannot easily beat Umbreon itself unless it Umbreon has wasted a lot of PP, (AC) and Zarude must be careful to not waste too much Jungle Healing PP if needed to it needs check a teammate like SubToxic Substitute + Toxic Aegislash. Galarian Moltres completely walls Umbreon (RC) and can potentially setup set up on it; RestTalk sets in particular can do this with complete impunity.

**Chip Damage**: Umbreon's matchup versus Pokemon such as Mamoswine and Nidoking can easily be tipped in the latter's favour if Umbreon Pokemon such as Mamoswine and Nidoking can easily get the edge versus Umbreon if it has been chipped by entry hazards, losing lost its Leftovers to Knock Off from a Pokemon like Nihilego or Mamoswine itself, or statused. While Umbreon still avoids being 2HKO'd 2HKOed by Life Orb Mamoswine without its Leftovers, it has a decent chance to be 2HKO'd if Stealth Rock are up. Stealth Rock makes the 2HKO decently likely. Modest Nidoking can 2HKO Bold Umbreon with Stealth Rock up if it is not running a Calm nature, forcing it to waste passive turns on Protect, (AC) which can be easily predicted. While less common, Spikes and Toxic Spikes can also effect Umbreon's matchup versus a range of Pokemon such as Mamoswine and Choice Specs Aegislash. damage Umbreon enough to threaten its winning matchups.

[OVERVIEW]

Umbreon's stellar mixed bulk and Dark typing make it a strong pick on defensive teams in UU, checking threats like Aegislash, Excadrill, Gyarados, and Salamence. It provides fantastic team utility as a Wish passer, getting plenty of opportunities to heal up its teammates versus Pokemon like Aegislash and Salamence. While unable to pressure some defensive Pokemon such as Amoonguss, Celesteela, and Teleport Chansey at all, Umbreon can freely use them to pass Wish, and Foul Play + Toxic greatly punishes many offensive checks switching in, (RC) preventing and prevents Umbreon from being too passive. However, it can offer a lot of opportunities to dangerous Fairy- and Fighting-types like Tapu Bulu, Primarina, and Conkeldurr that can greatly threaten bulkier teams, although Toxic and chip damage from Foul Play and entry hazards can wear them down. Umbreon also struggles versus some of the stronger special attackers in the tier like Thundurus-T and Meteor Beam Nihilego, and chip damage can bring it into 2HKO range of Pokemon it checks like Mamoswine and Nidoking.

[SET COMMENTS]

Foul Play lets Umbreon do considerable damage to physical attackers, being particularly key to checking Dragon Dance users like Gyarados and Salamence. Toxic lets Umbreon punish special attackers like Salamence and Moltres for using Roost against it, (RC) and it punishes and most of the broader metagame effectively.

Skarmory, Amoonguss, and Galarian Weezing can check threats like Conkeldurr, Mienshao (banned so remove the mention or replace it with another mon), and Tapu Bulu for Umbreon. Skarmory can also provide an additional Excadrill check, Spikes support, and an Azumarill check, while Galarian Weezing can provide Defog support. Aegislash is an incredible partner, (fixed spacing) checking Pokemon like Lycanroc-D, Calm Mind Galarian Slowbro, and Nihilego if Umbreon wants to avoid taking Knock Off. Quagsire is a superb teammate on stall tams teams, dealing with Calm Mind Galarian Slowbro, Belly Drum Azumarill, and Nasty Plot Thundurus-T. Nihilego can check Hydreigon and Thundurus-T for Umbreon while providing Stealth Rock and Knock Off support against Pokemon like Excadrill and Aegislash.
