GUH-HUH!

[SET]
Offensive (Urshifu-Rapid-Strike) @ Punching Glove / Focus Sash / Protective Pads
Ability: Unseen Fist
Level: 50
Tera Type: Water / Electric / Steel
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly / Adamant Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- Aqua Jet / Swords Dance / Thunder Punch
- Swords Dance / Ice Punch / Thunder Punch

[SET COMMENTS]

* With its excellent typing and Surging Strikes breaking through Focus Sash, Urshifu-R is among the premier physical attackers of the metagame!

* **Aqua Jet**: Aqua Jet is perfect for picking off weakened foes that are faster than Urshifu-R, such as Chien-Pao and Flutter Mane, but this does come at the cost of coverage or a setup move.

* **Swords Dance**: With Swords Dance, Urshifu-R becomes far more difficult to wall, with Surging Strikes now 2HKOing even the bulkiest Cresselia.

* **Ice Punch versus Ice Spinner**: While Ice Spinner is more powerful when not using Punching Glove, Ice Punch is still preferred because it reveals less information about Urshifu-R's set.

* **Thunder Punch**: Thunder Punch is overpowered by Close Combat even against foes that are weak to it, but it can potentially 3HKO Dondozo when using Tera Electric and Punching Glove and is a safer option against opposing Urshifu-R than Close Combat. This is also Urshifu-R's most powerful attack against Azumarill.

* **Jolly versus Adamant**: Jolly is preferred for outspeeding Mimikyu, a key target of Surging Strikes. Adamant can make sense if using Swords Dance and Aqua Jet together, having a better chance of sweeping late-game against fast threats that often run some bulk investment, such as Flutter Mane and Thundurus-T.

Other Options
========

* **Drain Punch**: While it offers no wallbreaking potential, Drain Punch is a good idea on bulkier sets with Punching Glove, letting Urshifu-R stick around much longer and potentially beat faster Urshifu-R that use Close Combat.

* **Bulk Up**: Bulk Up takes advantage of Urshifu-R's underrated physical bulk, though it will fail to easily wallbreak defensive foes like Cresselia as easily.

* **Trailblaze**: While difficult to fit in coverage-wise, Trailblaze's Speed boost can be a shocking win condition considering Urshifu-R's decent Speed, letting it outspeed even Dragapult and Iron Bundle!

Tera Types
=========

* **Tera Dependency - Low**: Urshifu-R is able to function perfectly fine without Terastallization, though it has both offensive and defensive uses for it.

* **Water**: The Tera Water boost to Surging Strikes makes Urshifu-R even more difficult to wall, with even Ting-Lu that lack Sitrus Berry being OHKOed by +2 Surging Strikes. It also makes Aqua Jet a more effective cleaning move.

* **Electric**: When paired with Thunder Punch, this is Urshifu-R's best shot of wearing down Dondozo, in addition to giving it a useful Electric-type resistance and paralysis immunity, making Zapdos and Thundurus-T far less reliable checks.

* **Steel**: Tera Steel is a strong defensive option for Urshifu-R, letting it take on Fairy, Grass, Flying, and Psychic attacks that normally threaten to OHKO it. It also means Iron Bundle will no longer OHKO Urshifu-R with Freeze-Dry.

* **Poison**: Tera Poison isn't quite as strong defensively as Tera Steel, but it does let Urshifu-R absorb Toxic Spikes and gives it a useful Fighting-type resistance instead of a weakness.

Items
========

* **Punching Glove versus Protective Pads**: Both of these items protect Urshifu-R from taking devastating damage by hitting Rocky Helmet or Rough Skin with Surging Strikes. Punching Glove is a great option since it boosts the damage of Surging Strikes and other punching moves, but Protective Pads does let Close Combat and Aqua Jet bypass chip damage as well, and unlike Punching Glove, Protective Pads lets even punching moves ignore Protect from common foes like Garganacl and Dondozo.

* **Focus Sash**: While it might seem strange with Urshifu-R's good physical bulk, Focus Sash lets it survive extremely powerful physical moves such as Chien-Pao's Electric Tera Blast and Landorus-T's Flying Tera Blast and powerful special attackers such Flutter Mane and Thundurus-T.

Alternate EV Spreads
========

* **244 HP / 20 Atk / 156 Def / 36 SpD / 52 Spe with Impish**: This bulky EV spread allows Urshifu-R to survive a wide variety of useful attacks, usually allowing to survive Jolly Life Orb Chien-Pao's super effective Tera Blast and allowing Tera Water or Tera Electric Urshifu-R to survive Timid Choice Specs Flutter Mane's Moonblast. The Speed EVs outspeed Adamant Breloom, and the Attack EVs give Urshifu-R a high chance to OHKO Focus Sash Chien-Pao with Tera Water Surging Strikes.

Minor Optimizations
========

* **Female Gender**: While very rare, Urshifu-R is vulnerable to Enamorus's Cute Charm if making contact, so using a female gender has no drawbacks.

[SET]
Choice Item Attacker (Urshifu-Rapid-Strike) @ Choice Scarf / Choice Band
Ability: Unseen Fist
Level: 50
Tera Type: Water / Electric / Fighting
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- U-turn
- Ice Punch / Thunder Punch / Aqua Jet

[SET COMMENTS]

* Thanks to U-turn, Urshifu-R is a strong option for a Choice item pivot.

* **Ice Punch versus Ice Spinner**: Urshifu-R greatly appreciates having a move that prevents it from being walled by Dragonite. While Ice Spinner is more powerful, Ice Punch is preferred due to revealing less about Urshifu-R's set.

* **Thunder Punch**: If using Tera Electric, Thunder Punch deals good damage to Dondozo and is its best way of dealing big damage to Azumarill,

* **Aqua Jet**: Aqua Jet is a good way for Choice Band Urshifu-R to clean up weakened teams.

* **Choice Scarf versus Choice Band**: Choice Scarf transforms Urshifu-R into an effective revenge killer, outspeeding important threats such as Chien-Pao and Dragapultand even Flutter Mane and Iron Bundle that lack Booster Energy. Choice Band, on the other hand, makes Urshifu-R a far more effective wallbreaker, letting it deal massive damage to foes like Dondozo and Ting-Lu.

Tera Types
========

* **Tera Dependency - Low**: Urshifu-R has both offensive and defensive uses for Terastallization, but it isn't vital for it to function.

* **Water**: Tera Water gives Surging Strikes a healthy boost in power, letting Choice Scarf Urshifu-R OHKO Focus Sash Chien-Pao and Choice Band Urshifu-R 2HKO Cresselia.

* **Electric**: Not only does Tera Electric make Thunder Punch a good option against Dondozo, it also gives Urshifu-R a vital immunity to paralysis and resistance against Electric and Flying attacks from Zapdos and Thundurus-T.

* **Fighting**: Tera Fighting works fantastically with Choice Band, letting Close Combat 2HKO even the bulkiest Dondozo! It's also reasonable on Choice Scarf Urshifu-R for cleaning weakened teams more easily.

* **Steel**: Tera Steel is a great defensive option, letting Urshifu-R survive Iron Bundle's Freeze-Dry and Flutter Mane's Moonblast.

* **Poison**: Tera Poison doesn't cover as many of Urshifu-R's natural weaknesses as Tera Steel, but it still offers a vital Fairy-type resistance and makes Urshifu-R a decent absorber of Toxic Spikes.

Minor Optimizations
========

* **Female Gender**: Urshifu-R's gender is not vital for this set's function, but it does protect it from activating the very rare Cute Charm on Enamorus, making a female gender slightly better on Urshifu-R.

* **Punching Glove versus Protective Pads**: Both of these items protect Urshifu-R from taking devastating damage by hitting Rocky Helmet or Rough Skin with Surging Strikes. Punching Glove is the best option since it boosts the damage of Surging Strikes and other punching moves, but Protective Pads does let Close Combat and Aqua Jet bypass chip damage as well. Note that any moves effective by the item chosen will no longer bypass Protect.

I could have these items confused but I believe Protective Pads does allow Urshifu-R to bypass Protect.

Bulbapedia agrees with me, but I am unable to personally test the interaction in-game atm so I can't confirm it.

Honestly even despite the gap in usage, I think Glove and Pads are pretty close in viability. I would even go as far as to say that it ultimately comes down to personal preference, especially on Swords Dance sets. You’re boosting your damage output already, so the boost from Punching Glove isn’t always as necessary. The prominence of Glove has also led to a lot, and I mean a lot of Pokémon attempting to protect on it, so Pads’ ability to bypass Pokémon like Garganacl attempting to stall it out by abusing Gloves is a huge deal in allowing it to get as much done as possible against some squads.

This is just my opinion however, and overall I think this analysis is very well done. QC APPROVED

I reworded things to specify that (including mention that Garganacl gets owned by it).

This is now ready for GP!
