Just for fun, let's list OU's top 50 Pokémon minus Legendaries, Event Pokémon and Megas. That is, Pokémon that any random trainer in the franchise is supposed to be able to catch without miraculous intervention:

6 - Ferrothorn
7 - Greninja
10 - Tangrowth
12 - Dugtrio
15 - Toxapex
17 - Clefable
18 - Garchomp
19 - Skarmory
23 - Chansey
23 - Excadrill
31 - Tyranitar
32 - Pelipper
33 - Mimikyu
34 - Bisharp
41 - Volcarona
42 - Marowak-Alola
43 - Gengar
44 - Kingdra
45 - Magnezone
48 - Ninetales-Alola
49 - Hawlucha

That's 21 in total. I don't have any strong opinions on the current state of any metagame, but it has to be said that the average OU player is pretty far removed from the random NPC schmucks that make up the bulk of the population in the Pokémon games. Being able to find and tame legendary beasts, forming once-in-history-strong bonds with your Pokémon, or obtaining ultra-rare Keystones, any of which would be heroic feats worthy of songs in-universe, is merely an entry ticket to the game we're playing here.

It sort of takes away the epicness of the so-called amazing feats you perform in-game. Like when you beat the Champion in Emerald and then immediately are sent to an island populated by hundreds of trainers, where Champion-ship is just a prerequisite for attendance. Or how that epic feeling you get when you finally pass your driving test diminishes when you get stuck in traffic on your way back from the examination office. Awesomeness made mundane, such is the nature of competitive gaming.

I can imagine "OU player" becoming a by-word for "Mary Sue" in fanfic-centered circles for that reason. Though the recent games forcing players to catch certain legendaries might also be an issue for that.

BTW I wonder what the top 50 for UU would look like without Legendaries or Megas?

E: Oops lol removed Azelf

I see. Though i should point out that Azelf is listed there. So about 30 Non-legendaries which almost flips OU's ratios. I cna't wait to see Ubers list of non-special pokemon :P

Another interesting thing to note from the usage stats is the rise of Pelliper of OU. I wonder what happened that benefited that pokemon.

The release of mega swampert and its access to drizzle

E: and the buff to its stats

Manaphy in UU? Time to run Xurk or Raikou on every team for the next week or so. Why you do this OU? :(
Because now every OU team has either Toxapex or Tapu Koko. Those Pokemon were made by Game Freak. Don't blame us.
Samurott: "Notice me sempai"
Seriously, Samurott is such a good Pokémon in NU yet doesn't get the usage it deserves.
#usesamurottmore
If it's so good, then why don't you try using it more? If you peak the NU ladder with a Samurott and then post an RMT about it, people will probably use it more.

I'm pretty sure this is because the average OU player can see the "switch" option when deciding what to do, while NPCs are apparently blind.

Not sure what happened here, but these were at the bottom of gen7pualpha-1500. Kind of funny to see larvitar getting more usage than tyranitar-mega, but also confused as to how these got there?

My guess is that someone either exploited a glitch or used hacks to use their OU/UU team in PU, but they were reported to administration and their rampage was stopped after just one battle.

Lore wise, in sumo, the megastones are much easier to find than in XY/ORAS. Back then they were a rare item and literally no NPC other than a few very important trainers and villians had acces to them.

Now, you go to a battle royale and every trainer has a mega. And you can literally buy them instead of looking for them in really specific places

Yeah, I always have wondered why legendaries (except maybe Zapdos and Mew) tend to be worse at stall than regular Pokemon. Zapdos and Mew are pretty much the only legendary Pokemon that are good for stalling in OU. I guess the game designers wanted the legendaries to be powerful, not ridiculously unbreakable.

In OU maybe. In Ubers those things are gods at stalling. Also, you forgot Suicune. It PP stalls just about everything.
