Project USUM OU Victim of the Week [Week 49: Dragon Dance Gyarados]

OK, voting is over. Here are the results. Also, Skarmory and Quagsire got the same amount of votes but I feel that Skarmory is more viable than Quagsire.

Checks: Mamoswine(Steel With It ) / Greninja(zCheshrye) / Pheromosa (HotFuzzBall )
Counters: Bronzong (Threw ) / Pyukumuku (TURBODERP ) / Quagsire (GnralLao ).

Sorry for being late. I have been experiencing connection problems. Anyway, our victim this week is Shift Gear Magearna.

Magearna @ Fairium Z
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid / Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shift Gear
- Fleur Cannon
- Flash Cannon / Hidden Power Fire
- Aura Sphere / Shadow Ball

Magearna boasts a great defensive typing that leaves it with only 2 weaknesses, allowing it plenty of opportunity to set-up. Fleur Cannon with Fairium Z allows Magearna a Fairy-type nuke which allows Soul-Heart to snowball its SpA very quickly. Aura Sphere allows Magearna to hit Steel-type Pokemon that resists its dual STAB such as Heatran and Ferrothorn. At +2 Spe, Magearna with a Timid Nature outpaces Choice Scarf Garchomp and Choice Scarf Nihilego, making it difficult to revenge kill as its not weak to priority moves. A Modest Nature, however, forgoes this Speed tier for a welcome boost to SpA.

EDIT: Sorry, I made a mistake while calculating the votes. Made the correction now. Sorry for the inconveniences caused.

Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Haze
- Recover
- Toxic / Toxic Spikes

Toxapex is a really solid Counter to this Magearna variant, resisting all of the moves on the given set except Shadow Ball, which it easily tanks due to it's amazing bulk. Toxapex also has Regenerator, allowing it to pivot into Magearna multiple times without much drawback, and Recover is also useful to heal Toxapex up without switching out. While Toxapex can't do very much back to Magearna, it can at least chip it down or burn it with Scald, or even set up Toxic Spikes on it. Toxapex can even Haze away Magearna's boosts, making it's attempt at sweeping futile.

252 SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 252 HP / 24 SpD Toxapex: 77-91 (25.3 - 29.9%) -- 0.1% chance to 4HKO after Black Sludge recovery
252 SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 252 HP / 24 SpD Toxapex: 115-136 (37.8 - 44.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
252+ SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 252 HP / 24 SpD Toxapex: 126-149 (41.4 - 49%) -- 17.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
252+ SpA Magearna Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 24 SpD Toxapex: 70-83 (23 - 27.3%) -- possible 5HKO after Black Sludge recovery
252+ SpA Magearna Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 24 SpD Toxapex: 70-83 (23 - 27.3%) -- 1.3% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
+1 252 SpA Magearna Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 24 SpD Toxapex: 95-112 (31.2 - 36.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Black Sludge recovery (If Magearna has gotten a Soul-Heart boost before Pex comes in)
252 SpA Magearna Aura Sphere vs. 252 HP / 24 SpD Toxapex: 32-38 (10.5 - 12.5%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252 SpA Magearna Flash Cannon vs. 252 HP / 24 SpD Toxapex: 48-57 (15.7 - 18.7%) -- possible 8HKO after Black Sludge recovery

Celesteela as a Counter

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Heavy Slam
- Flamethrower

SpDef Celesteela tanks any hit Magearna can throw at it relatively well since it resists Magearna's dual stab combination while taking minimal damage from the one super effective coverage move Magearna has. Since this variant of Magearna lacks Thunderbolt, Celesteela does not have to worry about chunked, even by Hidden Power Fire. Z-Fleur Cannon is easily tanked while Hidden Power Fire is a possible 4HKO (Modest nature) as well. Celesteela can either stall out Magearna with Leech Seed and Protect or it can just attack it with Flamethrower.

Modest
252+ SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Celesteela: 124-147 (31.1 - 36.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Magearna Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Celesteela: 102-122 (25.6 - 30.6%) -- 3.1% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252+ SpA Magearna Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Celesteela: 154-182 (38.6 - 45.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Timid
252 SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Celesteela: 114-134 (28.6 - 33.6%) -- 97.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Magearna Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Celesteela: 94-112 (23.6 - 28.1%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Magearna Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Celesteela: 140-166 (35.1 - 41.7%) -- 82.9% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Mantine as a Hard Check/Counter

Mantine @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 SpD
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Roost
- Defog
- Toxic

Pretty simple and straightforward. Since this Magearna set lacks Thunderbolt and Shift Gear is only Speed boosting functionally, it has no particular way to break standard Mantine barring the use of its Z-move, which still will not KO Mantine from full after SR. No other move it carries is capable of achieving a 2HKO after Stealth Rock, since Fleur Cannon will suffer the -2 and gimp follow up damage. Even if Magearna gets +1 off a KO, Mantine can survive a +1 Fleur Cannon after Stealth Rock on the "revenge" and Roost back up to stalling health, while Shadow Ball, the next strongest option, remains out of 3HKO after SR range even at +1 (barely 10% chance with Modest).

252 SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 252 HP / 16+ SpD Mantine: 214-253 (57.2 - 67.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252+ SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 252 HP / 16+ SpD Mantine: 157-186 (41.9 - 49.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 252 HP / 16+ SpD Mantine: 144-169 (38.5 - 45.1%) -- 76.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Magearna Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 16+ SpD Mantine: 59-70 (15.7 - 18.7%) -- possible 6HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

+1 252 SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 252 HP / 16+ SpD Mantine: 213-252 (56.9 - 67.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252+ SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 252 HP / 16+ SpD Mantine: 235-277 (62.8 - 74%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

+1 252+ SpA Magearna Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 16+ SpD Mantine: 96-114 (25.6 - 30.4%) -- 10.9% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Magearna Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 16+ SpD Mantine: 88-104 (23.5 - 27.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

The one scenario where Magearna is completely sure to beat Mantine is at +1 using Twinkle Tackle.
+1 252+ SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 252 HP / 16+ SpD Mantine: 352-415 (94.1 - 110.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

I only debate Hard Check vs Counter since Mantine does have to be wary (if not necessarily afraid) of the Z-move, which is not just this Magearna's option but a fairly common one in general. That said, that is exactly one option this Magearna can use one time to try and break Mantine, and since it lacks recovery even Mantine's meager Scald is enough chip damage (especially with a Burn proc) to force Magearna out, it's not an option to fish for Fleur crits or anything. Mantine is a fairly reliable answer to non T-bolt sets for Balance or occasional Stall teams. It's important to keep Mantine healthy though since it lacks Toxapex's Haze to make things safe for the teammates and thus has to stay alive until the stop is no longer needed.

EDIT: Mantine evidently learns Haze if you can manage to fit it.

Great post but does it warrant mentioning that Mantine does learn Haze and it's a decent enough option on it?

Check

Venusaur @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 232 HP / 180 SpA / 80 SpD / 16 Spe
Modest Nature
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Synthesis
- Hidden Power Fire

Venusuar resists most of Magearna's moves, allowiing it to switch in on almost anything Magearna has (except for +1 Flash Cannon or Twinkle Tackle), then Mega Evolve.

Unfortunately, the most Venusaur can do back is 3HKO with Hidden Power Fire.

Offensive:
180+ SpA Venusaur-Mega Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Magearna: 54-64 (17.9 - 21.2%) -- possible 5HKO
180+ SpA Venusaur-Mega Hidden Power Fire vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Magearna: 116-138 (38.5 - 45.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Defensive:
252 SpA Magearna Flash Cannon vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Venusaur-Mega: 105-124 (29.2 - 34.5%) -- 6.5% chance to 3HKO
252 SpA Magearna Aura Sphere vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Venusaur-Mega: 35-41 (9.7 - 11.4%) -- possible 9HKO
252 SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Venusaur-Mega: 84-100 (23.3 - 27.8%) -- 85.8% chance to 4HKO
252 SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Venusaur-Mega: 127-150 (35.3 - 41.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Magearna Hidden Power Fire vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Thick Fat Venusaur-Mega: 54-64 (15 - 17.8%) -- possible 6HKO
252 SpA Magearna Shadow Ball vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Venusaur-Mega: 70-83 (19.4 - 23.1%) -- possible 5HKO
+1 252 SpA Magearna Flash Cannon vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Venusaur-Mega: 157-186 (43.7 - 51.8%) -- 10.2% chance to 2HKO
+1 252 SpA Magearna Aura Sphere vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Venusaur-Mega: 52-62 (14.4 - 17.2%) -- possible 6HKO
+1 252 SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Venusaur-Mega: 127-150 (35.3 - 41.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252 SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Venusaur-Mega: 190-224 (52.9 - 62.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

This one's a bit tricky to handle because despite the number of slashes on the victim's set, it still doesn't cover the number of options Magearna has. The list of viable moves also includes Focus Blast, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam, it can absolutely make good use out of Steelium, Fightinium, Electrium, or Ghostium, and that's not even touching on stuff like Shuca Berry or Air Balloon. All of these different moves can drastically change how checking and countering Magearna works, and most of it is very fluid and dependent on the kind of support Magearna can expect from its team.

Scizor-Mega @ Scizorite
Ability: Light Metal
EVs: 248 HP / 176 Def / 84 SpD
Impish Nature
- Defog
- Bullet Punch
- Roost
- U-turn

Mega Scizor is a "safe" answer to most Shift Gear sets. The worst case scenario is Modest Focus Blast or Fightnium Z. With some slight damage, Magearna can 2HKO Scizor with Focus Blast or punch through it with Z-Aura Sphere.
252+ SpA Magearna Aura Sphere vs. 248 HP / 84 SpD Scizor-Mega: 89-105 (25.9 - 30.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252+ SpA Magearna Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 84 SpD Scizor-Mega: 132-156 (38.4 - 45.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and 1 layer of Spikes
252+ SpA Magearna All-Out Pummeling (160 BP) vs. 248 HP / 84 SpD Scizor-Mega: 176-208 (51.3 - 60.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Magearna All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 248 HP / 84 SpD Scizor-Mega: 209-246 (60.9 - 71.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Thunderbolt and Gigavolt Havoc is also an issue, posting slightly higher numbers than Aura Sphere and All-Out Pummeling, respectively.
252+ SpA Magearna Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 84 SpD Scizor-Mega: 99-117 (28.8 - 34.1%) -- 1.8% chance to 3HKO
252+ SpA Magearna Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 248 HP / 84 SpD Scizor-Mega: 192-227 (55.9 - 66.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

The big thing is that you kinda have to predict the Z-Move and play around it with resists and whatnot, which can be pretty tricky given Magearna's snowballing ability. However, once Magearna blows the Z-Move, Scizor can check it very easily, Roosting off damage and chipping away at it via Bullet Punch.

0 Atk Technician Scizor-Mega Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Magearna: 82-97 (27.2 - 32.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Also here's the HP Fire calc, although I haven't actually haven't seen HP Fire Shift Gear before so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ someone tell me if this is a real set
252+ SpA Magearna Hidden Power Fire vs. 248 HP / 84 SpD Scizor: 316-372 (92.1 - 108.4%) -- 50% chance to OHKO

Heatran @ Grassium Z
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Magma Storm

- Taunt

Role: Check

Heatran 4x resists both of Magearna's STABs and is immune to HP Fire, but it doesn't enjoy Aura Sphere. Magma Storm will spell the end for Magearna thanks to the residual damage or can just KO it outright. Assuming, of course, it hits.

252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Magearna: 288-342 (95.6 - 113.6%) -- 75% chance to OHKO (guaranteed OHKO after rocks, or, worst case scenario, the trapping damage will finish it off)

252 SpA Magearna Aura Sphere vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 166-196 (51.3 - 60.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Amoonguss is a pretty hard check to Magearna actually. It is not OHKOed by +1 HP Fire, and can stop it's sweep through Spore. Not much to say about it.

252 SpA Magearna Hidden Power Fire vs. 248 HP / 216+ SpD Amoonguss: 112-134 (25.9 - 31%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery.

+1 252 SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 248 HP / 216+ SpD Amoonguss: 204-241 (47.3 - 55.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery.

Skarmory @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Spikes
- Roost
- Iron Head
- Whirlwind

If you're not entering on Twinkle Tackle, this set counters Magearna perfectly:

252+ SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 157-186 (47 - 55.6%) -- 21.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 105-124 (31.4 - 37.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Magearna Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 130-154 (38.9 - 46.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Magearna Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 87-103 (26 - 30.8%) -- 5.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Magearna Aura Sphere vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 87-103 (26 - 30.8%) -- 5.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

If Magearna is Timid, you can take Twinkle Tackle + HP Fire (but only if there are not rocks):

252 SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 144-169 (43.1 - 50.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Magearna Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 120-142 (35.9 - 42.5%) -- 94.6% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ SpA Magearna Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 130-154 (38.9 - 46.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Magearna Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 87-103 (26 - 30.8%) -- 5.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Magearna Aura Sphere vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 87-103 (26 - 30.8%) -- 5.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

If Magearna is Timid, you can take Twinkle Tackle + HP Fire (but not if there are rocks):

252 SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 144-169 (43.1 - 50.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Magearna Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 120-142 (35.9 - 42.5%) -- 94.6% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
Should actually post the set instead of a bunch of calcs.

Also reserving Volcarona

Reserving Dugtrio as a check

Dugtrio @ Focus Sash
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Reversal
- Screech
- Memento

This traps magerna and can 2hko it with earthquake while living a hit (unless it set ups on u)
calcs
252 Atk Dugtrio Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Magearna: 242-288 (80.3 - 95.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

I don't wanna sound butt-hurt or whatever, but I'm pretty sure my Quagsire nomination got more votes than Empo's Skarmory... nvm that. Woke up grumpier than usual.

Anyway, here's my nomination for this week's victim:

Chansey as a Counter

Chansey @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Bold Nature
- Soft-Boiled
- Seismic Toss
- Thunder Wave
- Aromatherapy

Chansey stops SG Magearna dead in its tracks, like many other special attackers, with its huge special bulk. Soft-Boiled is nice for recovery, T-Wave is super useful to shut down Magearna's sweeping possibilities, Seismic Toss 3HKOes after SR and Aromatherapy is a nice bonus to heal its teammates from status.
+1 252+ SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 268-316 (41.7 - 49.2%) -- 84.8% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252+ SpA Magearna Aura Sphere vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 146-174 (22.7 - 27.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock

Chansey Seismic Toss vs. 0 HP Magearna: 100-100 (33.2 - 33.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

From the OP:
6. We allow reservation of Pokemon in this thread. However, please write up your post within 6 hours of the reservation. This is to ensure that the project doesn't become a race of who gets to reserve the best check / counter first. After 6 hours has elapsed and you still have not typed it out, your reservation will be nullified.
And unless I'm blantantly mistaken, JTD's reservation was posted more than 12 hours ago, nullifying his/her reservation.

Metagross-Mega @ Metagrossite
Ability: Clear Body
Happiness: 0
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Zen Headbutt
- Ice Punch / Thunder Punch
- Hammer Arm / Earthquake / Bullet Punch

Check

252+ SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Metagross-Mega: 161-190 (53.4 - 63.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Magearna Hidden Power Fire vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Metagross-Mega: 134-158 (44.5 - 52.4%) -- 17.2% chance to 2HKO

252+ SpA Magearna Aura Sphere vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Metagross-Mega: 89-105 (29.5 - 34.8%) -- 9.8% chance to 3HKO

+1 252+ SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Metagross-Mega: 242-285 (80.3 - 94.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+1 252+ SpA Magearna Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Metagross-Mega: 266-314 (88.3 - 104.3%) -- 25% chance to OHKO

You can't come on in a +1 Shadow Ball or Twinkle Tackle because you can't OHKO back from full. After SR, you stand a good chance to be 2HKO'd by Modest HP Fire (~75%). But you live any non-boosted hit quite comfortably (no Shadow Ball and no Stealth Rocks means even HP Fire doesn't 2HKO) and in response, you cleanly 2HKO with Meteor Mash or Earthquake.

252 Atk Tough Claws Metagross-Mega Meteor Mash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Magearna: 184-217 (61.1 - 72%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Check

Oftentimes one's greatest enemy is ones owns self

Magearna @ Assault Vest
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
- Fleur Cannon
- Flash Cannon
- Volt Switch
- Aura Sphere

AV Magearna is a really nice check to standard Shift Gear Magearna, with about a 30% chance to 2HKO after rocks or a 90% chance with a layer of Spikes, The only Variant of Shift Gear Magearna that can beat AV Magearna at full is Steelium-Z Magearna and only if it doesn't attempt to Shift Gear at all. AV Magearna absolutely hard walls the set posted above though since Flash Cannon is a 5HKO at best and Twinkle Tackle does at best 30%. Magearna is only a check though since it can get worn down easily throughout a match. Magearna is also nice switch-in to scout Maggy's set though since it doesn't mind having to deal with Trick Room Variants and knowing an opponent is running AV means that Magearna isn't necessary to check the opposing Magearna and can be sacced if need.
