This week's Next Best Thing is...
Week 22: Primarina
The (not so) little mermaid has quickly risen as one of UU's most formidable wallbreakers. With a nearly unresisted combination of Water + Fairy STABs and Psychic coverage for Amoonguss and Tentacruel. Its typing and special bulk also allow it to check various threats such as Salamence, Keldeo, and Chandelure. How will you explore Primarina's potential?
The idea behind this set is to set-up Amnesia in front of special attackers and to use Rest when we are at low hp and/or we are hit by Toxic.
The attacking moves are Stored Power and Moonblast in the preferred STAB because it gets rid of the Dark-type pokemons immune to Psychic attacks. Don't understimate the random SpA drops from Moonblast.
The ability is useless in this set.
The EVs spread is a classic offensive one because you want to be fastish enough to set-up in fron of some threats and a Modest nature helps to keep some offensive presence.
I think that this set has a lot of potential because it underlines the SpD of this bulky Water that already has a good typing to work with and gives a lot of staying power thanks to Rest.
Only an Amnesia is needed to start well. Just be wary of strong supereffective hits, but the situation changes after 2 Amnesia.

Screens support is really appreciated in order to set-up more easily and so is Sticky Web in order to outspeed more threats and set-up before being hit.
VoltTurn support is mandatory to make Primarina enter in front of a safe set-up monster.
This Primarina set focuses on the good spammable typing that is Fairy, and how with Misty Terrain, it can get a 150 BP Fairy STAB. Getting Misty Terrain up by itself is very hard, since the only setter is Geezing, so it probably has to set it up by itself, but thanks to that it can actually do a lot to AV Tangrowth and a decent amount to other checks such as Scizor, Amoonguss and Tentacruel.
252+ SpA Life Orb Primarina Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 248+ SpD Assault Vest Tangrowth: 157-187 (38.8 - 46.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Primarina Misty Explosion (100 BP) vs. 252 HP / 248+ SpD Assault Vest Tangrowth: 165-196 (40.8 - 48.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Primarina Misty Explosion (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 248+ SpD Assault Vest Tangrowth: 250-294 (61.8 - 72.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Primarina Misty Explosion (150 BP) vs. 120 HP / 0 SpD Scizor: 207-243 (66.5 - 78.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Primarina Misty Explosion (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Amoonguss: 207-243 (47.9 - 56.2%) -- 85.9% chance to 2HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Primarina Misty Explosion (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 8 SpD Tentacruel: 144-172 (39.5 - 47.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Black Sludge recovery
Metrenome allows it to constantly hit harder and harder each time, making it harder to stall via recover and makes it harder to pivot around since its constantly getting stronger. Draining kiss is the last move on the set because so it can recover and gain a stronger one each time it uses it consecutively.
Seems like your average booty Primarina set. Your opponent says "gg" as their 9% HP Raikou is about to get the final shot. When suddenly... you win with a jet! That's right, with priority at its disposal, you have a free get-out-jail-free card for emergency situations. Did you know Leon is the undefeated champion of the Galar region?
This is an interesting set that allows Primarina to do a couple interesting things. It allows Primarina to essentially just singlehandedly sit on Keldeo, Salamence, Noivern, Moltres, all while providing as a pivot. 12 evs in speed allow you to outrun 0 speed Celesteela, allowing you to flip-turn on it. 92 Special Attack with a Modest nature allows Primarina to always 2HKO standard Amoonguss and beat Tentacruel after rocks. 152 HP in accordance with 252 defense gives Primarina the best chance to avoid the 3HKO from Choice Specs Keldeo's Secret Sword (does about 29.2%-34.6%). Draining Kiss allows Primarina to stay healthy, although it is rather weak. Moonblast is definitely an alternative option, though Wish support or Healing Wish support would be very beneficial. Scald is pretty self explanatory, allows you to get free burns on stuff and is pretty spammable. Psychic allows Primarina to hit poison types such as Amoonguss that would wall it otherwise. Finally, Flip-Turn allows you to pivot on things after firing off an attack or just switch out on a slower pokemon.
Primarina occasionally ran a similar set to this in Gen 7 UU (although it would have been better when Metronome was implemented in the old way). The primary appeal is that with the Metronome boost, Echoed Voice can overpower Chansey once you reach maximum power, and you can catch Tentacruel and Amoonguss without locking into a move.
Screens Primarina is unique, as it is able to 1v1 the most common Defoggers in Moltres, Salamence, and Rotom-H. Scald and Moonblast are the STAB moves to beat out those Pokemon. 128 Speed EVs is to be able to outspeed Grimmsnarl, and be able to set a screen first, or threaten it out with Moonblast.
Primarina @ Expert Belt / Leftovers
EVs: 40 HP / 252 Atk / 216 Spe
- Work Up
- Triple Axel
- Play Rough
Primarina actually has a very decent physical movepool, so despite it (realistically) not being as good as any special set I have explored it here. Work Up is the boost move to raise one stage. Triple Axel is key fopr Grass-types that you will encounter, Play Rough and Liquidation are the STAB moves; Aqua Jet is there if you'd like the priority over either Liquidation or Work Up if you feel you can do without a boost. The EV spread maximises power and makes Primarina 210 Speed, so faster than Adamant Azumarill. Expert Belt allows you to 2-shot Amoonguss (you must, must remove the Rocky Helmet though), whereas Leftovers will give you some sort of longevity.
It sucks to be walled by Moltres and Rotom-H but they wouldn't switch in on you unless they already know your set and you hopefully trapped something. Specifically, you can trap and beat Tangrowth, Amoonguss, and importantly Chansey (which a similar Azumarill set cannot beat because nobody switches in Chansey on Azumarill). You are also quite a bit stronger than Azumarill and can still kill things with Moonblast. You could run a Water stab over Moonblast but I think these days Moonblast should be preferred for Kommo-o, Salamence, and Keldeo which are pretty common.
Note: do not try to trap Ghost types like Aegislash.
