This week's Next Best Thing is...

Week 21: Aegislash

:xy/aegislash: :xy/aegislash-blade:

Fear the sword! Aegislash made UU its home once more with our recent retest, and has proven itself to be a valuable and dangerous force. With virtually no Ghost resists in the tier, Aegislash's Shadow Ball is hard to switch into, especially if backed up by Choice Specs. SubTox sets annoy teams to no end, and SD sets, while a bit weaker and more vulnerable, still can punch holes in the opposing team with enough support. How will you explore Aegislash's potential?

balloon magnet rise

Aegislash @ Air Balloon
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Magnet Rise
- Iron Head
- Shadow Sneak

Have you ever wanted some gimmicky set that will work 1/5 of the times? Well then, Magnet Rise Aegislash is for you! This set focuses on Magnet Rise, a move which makes you inmune to ground type moves for 5 turns. Along with the Air Balloon, in the turn they take to pop your balloon, you can Magnet Rise and make them not able to hit you super effectively! This works mostly with certain sets of the common Ground-types, like Mamoswine without Knock Off, Ice Beam Nidoqueen, Rhyperior, Tapu Bulu without Darkest Lariat and DD Salamence. Swords Dance makes the Ground-types you wall be set up fodder, with Iron Head as your main STAB and Shadow Sneak as priority.

Naive Nature

- Reversal
- Shadow Ball
- Autotomize

anyone who knows me knows i've been running endure reversal sets since i started playing -- i spammed lucario and hitmonlee throughout gen 6 and 7 and have even given lycanroc a try in gen 8. aegislash, however is the perfect endure weakness policy pokemon.

aegislash has no trouble triggering weakness policy -- with weaknesses to common offensive types like ground, dark, fire, and ghost, it's very easy to endure and get the juicy +2/+2 boost that powers up your reversal as well as your stab shadow balls. investment goes fully into SpA because reversal is so strong it doesn't need investment -- but you could change at your leisure! generally, the set will play something like this -- autotomize as they switch into a strong threat that can normally kill aegislash, endure on their SE move and get the boost, and then sweep the team with reversal and shadow ball! Naive nature allows you to outspeed scarf krook after an autotomize, but rash nature is also acceptable for more damage!

in terms of team support, aegi appreciates psychic terrain for immunity to priority moves. it also appreciates hazard support and other teammates that can bust through the few things in the tier that can take either of its boosted moves. here's some relevant calcs!

+2 0 Atk Aegislash-Blade Reversal (200 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Celesteela: 372-438 (93.4 - 110%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Quagsire got you feeling down? Wish your SD set could really chunk through after all? Well here is your shot! This SOLAR BLADE Aegislash will rip apart those bulky water types, and you can still SD Sneak your way to success wihtout having to be let down by the Quagsire or Gastro or Toad coming in to spoil your party. And with Power Herb it activates right away! Want more immediate activations? Use it in sun like Rawbi did for Research Week! Rumor has it that this works against Keldeo too!!!!

Unviable set but whatever Anyway Im pretty sure this is the ultimate "next best thing" for aegislash. Functions the same as SD, being a strong physical breaker capable of mowing any wall in the tier down with the exception of tangrowth and buzzwole. Just check these calcs out
252+ Atk Choice Band Aegislash-Blade Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 220+ Def Amoonguss: 211-250 (48.8 - 57.8%) -- 96.1% chance to 2HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Aegislash-Blade Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Celesteela: 221-260 (55.5 - 65.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Aegislash-Blade Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 220+ Def Quagsire: 187-221 (47.4 - 56%) -- 25.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
It also has head smash to lure in stuff like bulky moltres galar which would otherwise easily check aegislash's main sets. This set is def most likely to be an "other options set" for aegislash so its pretty clear that this is the next best thing.

Tired of dumb ol' AV Tang getting in your way? Wanting a way to boost that great SpAtk stat you have? Let this Sword and Shield scream (?) at it's opponents and Air Slash that silly old pile of spaghetti and mushrooms! Even if they switch out, you're still and Aegislash at +1 which is frightening AF. The Speed EV's allow you to outpace PhysDef Buzzwole, among other things that won't expect this speedy slasher! The HP EV's are so that you always live an EQ from Tang, so have fun messing with it!

Destiny bond allows it to lure in a pokemon and kill it. With custap endure, it can most of the time claim a kill alongside it. Max sp attack allows shadow balls to hit as hard as possible, while CC still chunking pokemon such as krook, chansey, obstagoon. 176 speed to outrun azumarill so you can hit it first or destiny bond in custap range and kill it.

Aegislash @ Leftovers
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Block
- Rest
- Iron Defense
- Spite

This set aims to trap and destroy (PP stall) the most common aegislash defensive counterplay, including uu staples like amoonguss, tangrowth and defensive Kommo-o while also succesfully defeating other UU mons like tentacruel, spdef tapu-bulu, no eq defensive buzzwole and scarf nihilego.
This is possible thanks to aegi's gargantuan defenses coupled with iron defense that let it beat unsespecting targets, opening holes for teammates to abuse.
The plan is simple you block on their attempt to scout your aegi set and follow it up with spite's, ID and rest to both restore your health in a critical situation and save PP.

CALCS:
0 SpA Kommo-o Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Aegislash-Shield: 74-88 (22.8 - 27.1%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Amoonguss Foul Play vs. +2 252 HP / 4 Def Aegislash-Shield: 32-38 (9.8 - 11.7%) -- possibly the worst move ever

0 Atk Tangrowth Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. +2 252 HP / 4 Def Aegislash-Shield: 54-64 (16.6 - 19.7%) -- guaranteed 6HKO

Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Rain Dance
- Toxic
- Shadow Ball
- King's Shield

Aegislash in Shield Form has both the typing and defensive stats to take a hit very well. Rain also just got stronger with Barraskewda dropping down. So the idea here is to switch it in on an attack and have it eject straight out into one of your other offensive mons, rather than take the hit with something else (say one of your rain abusers or Drizzle setters), thus maintaining your momentum. Later on in the match, this can then set up the rain itself - and the rest is similar to the SubToxic set.

Aegislash @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Autotomize
- Shadow Claw
- Close Combat

Similar to the popular Galarian Moltres set, this variant of Swords Dance Aegislash focuses on its impressive bulk in Shield form to survive powerful attacks behind screens, set up twice, and potentially trigger the Weakness Policy after surviving a supereffective attack. Using Autotomize over Shadow Sneak also gives Aegislash a better matchup against faster Ghost-resistant Pokemon when set up, like Diggersby, Obstagoon, Krookodile, and non-Choice Scarf Zarude.

Light Clay Reflect Aegislash aka Offensive Mono Screener Aegislash

Aegislash @ Light Clay
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 240 HP / 252 SpA / 16 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Reflect
- Shadow Ball
- Steel Beam
- King's Shield

General idea
Here we have one of the most offensive Mono Screener in the metagame with a wonderful 140 base SpA, although it can set only Reflect...but it is more than enough to work with.

King's Shield is here as utility move towards physical attackers and allows Aegislash to turn back into Defense Mode. It also hides the item of this set and allows' to enhance the utility of Reflect.
No physical moves are chosen to avoid the detrimental effet of burn.
Shadow Ball is the main STAB move, whereas Steel Beam is mandatory to have a nuke that keeps the momentum in our favour if we faint in the process.
Reflect is the key of the set: it is a good support to our teammates on the physical side.
Defensive calcs:
+6 0 Atk Tapu Bulu Darkest Lariat vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield through Reflect: 228-269 (71 - 83.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

252 Atk Zarude Darkest Lariat vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield through Reflect: 99-117 (30.8 - 36.4%) -- 55.1% chance to 3HKO
252 Atk Krookodile Earthquake vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield through Reflect: 114-135 (35.5 - 42%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Victini V-create vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield through Reflect: 274-324 (85.3 - 100.9%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO [Here King's Shield is very useful]

Offensive calcs with Steel Beam (consider that Steel Beam is here to keep the momentum and not as a conventional offensive move):
252+ SpA Aegislash-Shield Steel Beam vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Ninetales-Alola with an ally's Aurora Veil: 278-330 (79.4 - 94.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Aegislash-Shield Steel Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mamoswine: 420-494 (116.3 - 136.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Aegislash-Shield Steel Beam vs. 0 HP / 4- SpD Cloyster: 288-339 (119.5 - 140.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Tyrantrum Earthquake vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield through Reflect: 128-151 (39.8 - 47%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

EVs spread and support
16 Spe EVs (to hit 160 Spe) are useful in this set in order to outspeed 4 Spe EVs Celesteela with a neutral nature as you can see here: https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/ss-uu-speedlist-23-02-2021-update-see-post-38.3657359/
252 SpA+ EVs are there to dish out a lot of damage coming from a base 140 SpA.
The remaining 240 HP EVs are all put into the hp to have odd health points to switch into SR one more time.

The chosen item is Light Clay in order to use Reflect at its full extent.

Team(mates) support
This Aegislash loves come into play at full health through VolTurn strategies. Hazards removal and Wish support is appreciated to alleviate the lack of recovery.
In return, you'll have Reflect support and an hard-hitter.

Since Bandkrook wanted me to post something for this week I decided that Scarf Aegislash could be an interesting set and lure in general for stuff like Moltres/Thund/weakened Keldeo and other pokes since Scarf isn't really something that you see everyday.

The Speed EVs allows it to outspeed Thundurus-i and kill it with Head Smash (even with Timid nature) but you can use it with Hasty nature which allows it to kill Salamence from full in exchange of some physical bulk.

Week 22: Primarina

:xy/primarina:

The (not so) little mermaid has quickly risen as one of UU's most formidable wallbreakers. With a nearly unresisted combination of Water + Fairy STABs and Psychic coverage for Amoonguss and Tentacruel. Its typing and special bulk also allow it to check various threats such as Salamence, Keldeo, and Chandelure. How will you explore Primarina's potential?

Primarina @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Amnesia
- Moonblast
- Stored Power
- Rest

General idea
The idea behind this set is to set-up Amnesia in front of special attackers and to use Rest when we are at low hp and/or we are hit by Toxic.
The attacking moves are Stored Power and Moonblast in the preferred STAB because it gets rid of the Dark-type pokemons immune to Psychic attacks. Don't understimate the random SpA drops from Moonblast.
  • The ability is useless in this set.
The EVs spread is a classic offensive one because you want to be fastish enough to set-up in fron of some threats and a Modest nature helps to keep some offensive presence.
I think that this set has a lot of potential because it underlines the SpD of this bulky Water that already has a good typing to work with and gives a lot of staying power thanks to Rest.
Only an Amnesia is needed to start well. Just be wary of strong supereffective hits, but the situation changes after 2 Amnesia.

This Primarina set focuses on the good spammable typing that is Fairy, and how with Misty Terrain, it can get a 150 BP Fairy STAB. Getting Misty Terrain up by itself is very hard, since the only setter is Geezing, so it probably has to set it up by itself, but thanks to that it can actually do a lot to AV Tangrowth and a decent amount to other checks such as Scizor, Amoonguss and Tentacruel.

Metrenome allows it to constantly hit harder and harder each time, making it harder to stall via recover and makes it harder to pivot around since its constantly getting stronger. Draining kiss is the last move on the set because so it can recover and gain a stronger one each time it uses it consecutively.

It allows Primarina to essentially just singlehandedly sit on Keldeo, Salamence, Noivern, Moltres, all while providing as a pivot. 12 evs in speed allow you to outrun 0 speed Celesteela, allowing you to flip-turn on it. 92 Special Attack with a Modest nature allows Primarina to always 2HKO standard Amoonguss and beat Tentacruel after rocks. 152 HP in accordance with 252 defense gives Primarina the best chance to avoid the 3HKO from Choice Specs Keldeo's Secret Sword (does about 29.2%-34.6%). Draining Kiss allows Primarina to stay healthy, although it is rather weak. Moonblast is definitely an alternative option, though Wish support or Healing Wish support would be very beneficial. Scald is pretty self explanatory, allows you to get free burns on stuff and is pretty spammable. Psychic allows Primarina to hit poison types such as Amoonguss that would wall it otherwise. Finally, Flip-Turn allows you to pivot on things after firing off an attack or just switch out on a slower pokemon.
