name: Yawn + Protect
move 1: Yawn
move 2: Protect
move 3: Hydro Pump
move 4: Ice Beam / Fake Tears
item: Life Orb / Mystic Water
ability: Water Absorb
nature: Modest
evs: 224 HP / 160 Def / 124 SpA
[SET COMMENTS]
Vaporeon functions as a bulky Water-type that does well against hyper offensive threats. It can easily take most neutral and resisted attacks and use Yawn's guaranteed sleep turn to either 2HKO foes or OHKO them after a Fake Tears. Ice Beam gives positive matchups versus prevalent Dragon-types, particularly Dragapult, Hydreigon, and Haxorus. It can also allow you to defeat Dracovish with a lucky damage roll. Alternatively, Fake Tears turns matchups against some stall Pokemon such as Galarian Corsola and Arcanine in Vaporeon's favor, as well as generally reducing its reliance on luck. Vaporeon's defensive investments allow it to survive neutral hits from many strong Pokemon, particularly Haxorus, Dragapult, and Hydreigon. Life Orb is necessary to secure the KO against Haxorus and turn the Dragapult matchup into a favorable roll for an OHKO, although Mystic Water is preferred when running Fake Tears to provide Vaporeon with more longevity. Water Absorb prevents Dracovish from hitting Vaporeon with its 170 BP Fishious Rend, which can put it in range of fainting to Life Orb recoil.
Vaporeon pairs well with frailer, slower Pokemon, especially slower Choice Band users such as Dracozolt and Haxorus that hit hard but may face bad matchups against hyper offensive threats like Galarian Darmanitan, Hydreigon, and Dragapult that Vaporeon can easily handle. Vaporeon struggles with other defensive Water-type Pokemon that resist or are immune to its STAB moves such as Milotic and Gastrodon and hard hitting Electric-type Pokemon such as Dracozolt and Rotom-W. Excadrill and Rotom-C cover these weaknesses well with their strong, super effective STAB attacks. In return, Vaporeon can cover faults these two Pokemon share in a weakness to hyper offensive Pokemon and Fire-type Pokemon.
